We have so much to celebrate from this summer: In June, we welcomed more than 100 children from our congregation and community to the Babylon Vacation Bible School. More than 60 volunteers helped these children to experience the love of God and learn about the importance of faith. During this special week, seeds were planted that will bear fruit in the lives of these little ones for years to come.

In July, we celebrated our freedoms with our church family during the Patriotic Pops Picnic. We gave thanks to God for our country, singing familiar songs and watching as the children paraded through our Fellowship Hall. We sent mission teams to New York to share God’s love through kid’s camps and another team to Tijuana to show God’s love through construction work and caring ministry in this impoverished community. Our youth participated in Passport Camp, growing deeper in their faith and serving others with compassion. Twenty-six of our 3rd-5th grade children travelled to Passport Kids to worship, to learn, and to serve together.

We have so much to anticipate this fall: In August, we will have our Kick-Off Sunday as children shift to new school classrooms and Sunday School Classes. We will ask God to bless not only our students, but also the teachers, staff members, and administrators from our schools.

We will also remember that we are all called to learn and to study the scriptures. On Wednesday Nights, our adults will study the Bible by looking at the four gospels. Our youth will continue to ask questions together and seek answers using the scriptures and their stories. Our children will begin a new season of choir and missions engagement.

In September, we look forward to “Prime,” a wonderful evening filled with food and entertainment. The theme for the Fall event is “Broadway Review” and will include singers from Smoke Rise as well as FBC Decatur. Young Adults will participate in a Marriage Retreat at Calloway Gardens on September 21-23 led by Bo and Gail Prosser. Our “travel team” is preparing for an exciting two-night trip to Flat Rock/Hendersonville, NC. In October, we will celebrate missions with special presentations on Wednesday nights and Mission Sunday, scheduled for October 14. Women of Smoke Rise will enjoy a retreat to the Georgia Mountains to build closer relationships with God and each other. On October 24, our church will host Octoberfest which is always an excellent outreach to our community and a lot of fun!

FAMILY M I N I ST RY AT SMOK E R I SE Intergenerational Relationships Smoke Rise Baptist Children’s Ministry will focus on intergenerational relationships for the 2018-2019 year.

Our theme is “Coming Together - Bringing Generations Closer in Faith.” We will examine the stories of people in the Bible who learned from one another despite their age differences. In Sunday school and children’s worship we will read about Naomi and Ruth; Timothy, Lois, and Eunice, as well as Eli and Samuel.

Each month in the Crosstie, a relationship will be highlighted which is already making a difference in our church family and our children. On the Wednesday evenings prior to All Saints' Day, our children will learn about the Saints of Smoke Rise Baptist Church. In preparation for a special recognition we will invite people to come and talk to us about the special Saints of our church.

In support of this effort, Becky will lead a Journey's session in the coming weeks on the importance of intergenerational connections.

In the months ahead, we will host Grandparents' Day, Octoberfest, and Christmas Caroling. All of these events are open to everyone as fellowship opportunities that promote intergenerational relationships that strengthen our bond as a family of faith.

I wear polarized sunglasses after a recommendation from my optometrist, but after wearing them I don’t think I could go back to regular lenses; the lake seems clearer, I can track my golfball better, and you can tell if someone has gotten a bad tint job on their car. My vision is crisper when I wear polarized lenses. I can still see when I wear regular sunglasses, but things just aren't as crisp.

The types of lenses we have in our sunglasses aren’t the only lenses that we have. We also process the world through various mental lenses that we use to process and experience life. What filter do I need to use for this Instagram post? Will this post get me more followers? How will this action make me look to her? How does this line up with my political ideology? Should I cheer for them because they are in the SEC or do I continue to root against them? These are all lenses that we experience life through, and they will be different based on our background and upbringing.

But, regardless of the various lenses we carry with us, there is one lens that we should all see life through: What does Jesus have to say about this? When our first lens is the words in red in the Bible, Jesus becomes the filter through which we experience life and see the world.

This coming year, the youth are going to focus on what it means to live our lives by putting on our Jesus-colored glasses. We’re going to look again at our family and friends, our pastimes and beliefs, and see how Jesus would have viewed them. Will you join us by making Jesus the first lens through which you experience life?

Meet Our New Intern My name is Monica Ramirez Leon and I live in Gainesville, Ga! Originally from Jalisco, Mexico, my family and I have lived in Gainesville for almost 20 years. I went to Gainesville High School and recently graduated from Young Harris College with a major in Spanish and a minor in Business and Public Policy. I have been accepted to Mercer’s McAfee School of theology and look forward to studying Community Development and Global Missions.

Missions, both local and global, have played an important role in my life and especially in my walk with Christ. During my time at FBC Gainesville, I worked as a Missions Intern alongside Rev. Ruth Demby and participated in mission trips and helped with youth by leading and teaching them in various summer camps.

Working with the youth at FBC Gainesville has been one of the key things that God used in calling me to ministry, so it’s easy to say that Youth Ministry in general has a special place in my heart.

As I look toward the future, I am excited to be a part of the Smoke Rise Baptist family and to learn and grow with you!

GEN ER OS I T Y The Principle of the Four Quarters In his essay The Principle of the Four Quarters, pastor Dallas Stallings recounts his first lesson in money stewardship as a child when his father gave him four quarters as a weekly allowance. He was required to give one quarter to the church, to deposit another quarter in a bank account, and was free to use the remaining two quarters for anything else he might desire. Over the course of his life, the principle of the four quarters remained with him as a way of evaluating his sense of wealth and personal financial health.

After a lifetime of managing money and evaluating spending habits using the principle of the four quarters, Stallings wrote, “I have come to the conclusion that wealth is not so much how much money one has but the attitude with which one uses his money and his other assets . . . . Our use of our money and other assets has become [for me and my wife] a lifestyle that gives meaning and purpose to who we are. It is both a spiritual and a financial wealth that is not measured in dollars but in attitude.”

Another way of conceiving Stallings’ lesson is to reflect on how our money fits into three categories from most narrow to most broad: (1) tithing and charitable giving, (2) savings, (3) everything else. When we conceive tithing and saving as one of many individual line items in a budget, we run the risk of overlooking their weighted significance. As our income and assets grow beyond a meager allowance, it is tempting to measure wealth as a combination of dollar figures and accumulated stuff. When we fall into this trap, our sense of spiritual wealth suffers most of all.

SERVIN G ON M I S S ION Our 2018 Mission Trip to NYC was a success in so many ways! There were 18 team members, and 11 of those had never been on this trip before. Our team this year was the most diverse ever, having 11 Smoke Rise Members and 7 non-members.

All the preparation and planning that was done before we left paid off, and Clue Camp 2018 (The Future is You and Me) was a hit! Our week's theme was "I Am Peaceful". We shared ourselves and God's Love and "Peace" with approximately 60 children at Metro Baptist Church

in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, and 20 children at Greater Restoration Baptist Church in Brooklyn.

I loved watching and listening to everyone's reactions to the week, but especially the newcomers. I asked a couple of them to share their thoughts and I would like to share them with you.

"It is ironic that our theme for the week, peace and diversity, was shown so vividly to us by these sweet children." -Marsha Kelley "I think getting to know the children was the best part.

On July 14, eighteen people made their way to the Atlanta airport and boarded flights to San Diego, CA, where we all met up with our transportation to Tijuana, Mexico. Some had never been before but most were veterans, and several had made the journey consecutively for the last 18 years. After we settled into our lovely accommodations at Puente de Amistad, we readied for the week’s work.

Part of our team worked with the children in a Backyard Bible School adventure, and part of the team worked at main campus at Centro Shalom, the church and ministry led by Chava who spoke at Smoke Rise on July 8th.
