MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL

Nancy Richards, M. Ed Head of School

As I reflect on the 2020-21 school year, I feel a great deal of pride and gratitude for our entire school community. While our students and staff adjusted to a combination of remote and in-school learning, our community demonstrated their confidence, generosity and appreciation through philanthropic donations to the school. These donations provided our students with new learning opportunities, enhancements across the entire school, supported remote and in-person learning, and allowed us to stay nimble and adjust to the changing needs of the students and school. Through it all, our Millies continued to thrive and demonstrate resilience and strength.

Through donations to our Head’s Initiatives fund, a number of enhancements were made possible such as new learning technology and devices, a large document printer, document cameras, maker carts, microscopes, assistive learning technology, sunshades and artificial turf in the Wonder Garden, resources for our Signature Programs and refurbishment of the Student Lounge, just to name a few. Our Student Financial Assistance fund totalling approximately $450,000 was awarded to 48 deserving students, and helps our school attract and retain talented students. All gifts continue to enrich our programming school-wide and benefit every Millie.

“

A LASER FOCUS ON DELIVERING PROGRAMS THAT POSITION GIRLS FOR THE FUTURE

For Marguerite Jackson, supporting and empowering girls comes naturally. Marguerite challenged assumptions and crashed barriers in her professional career, and has an extensive background in supporting young people to reach their full potential. “Wherever young people are, I am interested in being part of creating environments where they will strive, thrive and have opportunities to be fully responsible and confident participants in their adult life. The SMLS environment exemplifies this.”

Marguerite is an active member of the SMLS community, and has been a member of the school’s Board of Governors for the past six years. Not only is she a committed volunteer, Marguerite and her husband Gary also support The Millie Fund. “Our charitable commitment is linked to a strong confidence in the SMLS leadership team, faculty and staff, and the Board of Governors, all of whom demonstrate a laser focus on delivering programs that position girls for the future. I am proud to support SMLS.” Marguerite’s granddaughter, Claire Burian, graduated Class of 2021.

Her daughter Sandra and her husband Tom - Claire’s parents - are also committed supporters of SMLS and contribute annually to The Millie Fund. “We are delighted to financially support SMLS. In the years that Claire attended the school we watched her mature into a caring, thoughtful, confident young woman. We saw her strength and confidence grow each year. We know that SMLS’ approach has been a gift to Claire in her foundational years and we are so pleased that we chose SMLS. Our deep appreciation to all the SMLS staff.”

“

PARTICIPATING AS A DONOR IS JUST A SMALL WAY I CAN SHOW MY GRATITUDE

“I am grateful every day to teach and learn at SMLS it’s as simple as that, and participating as a donor is just a small way I can show my gratitude. I deeply believe that every student can learn and succeed limitlessly, and knowing that donating to The Millie Fund may serve a student to discover their limitlessness here is absolutely thrilling. It makes the decision to donate a joy, and I am grateful to do so.”

MADISON JUCHNIEWICZ GRADE 4

“

IT MAKES ME HAPPY THAT I DONATED

CLASS OF 2021 BURSARY FUND

Giving to those in need is top of mind for Madison Juchniewicz. In lieu of presents to celebrate her eighth birthday, Madison collected money to donate to SMLS. “When her birthday was approaching, Madison and I discussed what we should do”, said her mother, Aurora. “She knows that she has more than she needs, and decided to collect money to donate instead of receiving more toys. She chose to give it to SMLS”.

Together with her teacher, they decided to use the money to purchase new novels for her Grade 3 class. This wasn’t the first time Madison has donated to SMLS. She also donated her birthday money to SMLS the year before, and her Grade 2 Class used that money to create a Lego wall in the classroom. She regularly supports local toy drives as well.

This won’t be the last philanthropic act for Madison. She plans to continue supporting charities and giving her toys to local toy drives. “It makes me proud to see the novels and Lego wall being used. I already have a lot, and I thought the school might need things. It makes me happy that I donated the money.” Madison Juchniewicz
