Candidate inspired by Obama's success seeks Governor’s Office RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Part of Joe Symmon’s American Dream is to run for governor of California. The Rancho Cucamonga resident will do just that - as a conservative Democrat. “Running for governor, would be a token of what California has done for me and my family, so I would like to give back,” said Symmon, who came to the United States from Kenya in 1977. Symmon will be battling it out with numerous Democratic gubernatorial candidates in the June primary. However, his toughest competitor will be Jerry Brown, the state’s attorney general and former governor. Despite Brown having quite the advantage in terms of fundraising and name recognition, Symmon is not deterred. “I do have an advantage though because I’m bringing in freshness into the leadership,” Symmon said. “I’m coming up with a fresh approach to new leadership for the 21st Century. What’s Happening Around Town Hundreds Tie The Knot at Auto Club Speedway on 10.10.10 Auto Club Speedway's starting line was the place where more than 100 of the most passionate and loving race fans" gathered on Sunday morning to make or renew marriage vows on race day. "It was very, very special and this was our first time at the race track," said Dora Kwan, a 30-something San Diego resident who joined husband and race fan Eddie Kwan to repeat wedding vows after more than four years of marriage. The Sunday morning ceremony, which Speedway president Gillian Zucker officiated over in a judicial robe adorned with a checker flag design around the collar, was a real wedding for couples who also paid for a San Bernardino County marriage license.
Moreno Valley: Reality Show Promotes City Moreno Valley has launched an adventure reality show: "Mission MoVal." The show's race takes three teams of Moreno Valley residents through each of the five City Council districts. "To my knowledge this production marks the first time any city has ever successfully produced a resident-based reality show," "Mission MoVal's" Executive Producer Timothy Carroll said. The purpose of "Mission MoVal" is to highlight Moreno Valley's parks, facilities, points of interest, local entertainment options and local businesses, as teams traverse the city. Someone didn't become your friend on Facebook to give you business or to allow you to use his or her wall as a billboard. Education What to do if your child is being bullied If your child is being bullied, she's not alone. About 160,000 children in the United States miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students, according to the National Education Association. Bullying is a serious problem that is growing worse, and is taking on new forms through the use of the Internet and mobile phones, say educators. Some estimates say that 25 percent of American children experience direct or indirect bullying daily. Cyber-bullying, a relatively new form of bullying, takes place over the Internet through social media websites and forums, or through mobile devices. Many pre-teens and teens prefer to communicate with one another through texting on their mobile devices. Because kids can share messages quickly with a large group of students, cyber-bullying can be especially effective in spreading rumors about a student or harassing a student through the sharing of photos. Because this is a relatively new area of harassment, many school districts are still trying to determine the reach of their authority in off-campus cyber-bullying attacks.
Here are some additional tips on what to do if you suspect that your child is the victim of a bully: * Talk to your child. * Document facts. Take pictures of any injuries and have your child give a detailed description of what happened. * Talk to teachers and the principal immediately. * Put it in writing. Put your concerns into writing to the principal, the superintendent and school board members. * Encourage others to speak up. If the same child is bullying other students, persuade parents to report it too. * Call the police. * Talk with a lawyer. If your child has been physically or sexually harassed contact an attorney. NBA champion L.A. Lakers will play exhibition in Ontario; game will be broadcast live on ESPN The NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers will be playing the Golden State Warriors in an exhibition game on Friday, Oct. 22 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario. A new game time of 7 p.m. has been announced. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN to a national audience. Taurasi, U.S. wins FIBA World title Chino’s Diana Taurasi has put herself in some elite company when it comes to women’s basketball. Taurasi, a 2000 Don Lugo High School graduate, is one of only six players to win an NCAA championship, a WNBA title, an Olympic gold medal, and last Sunday, a FIBA World Championship gold. Swin Cash, Sue Bird, Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Kara Wolters also hold that distinction. Taurasi scored 16 points, had two assists and two steals in 30 minutes for Team USA in its 89-69 win over host Czech Republic in the championship game of the FIBA World Championship played in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Real Estate Bank of America to Freeze Foreclosure Cases WASHINGTON — Bank of America is delaying foreclosures in 23 states as it examines whether it rushed the foreclosure process for thousands of homeowners without reading the documents. The move adds the nation's largest bank to a growing list of mortgage companies whose employees signed documents in foreclosure cases without verifying the information in them. Bank of America isn't able to estimate how many homeowners' cases will be affected, Dan Frahm, a spokesman for the Charlotte, N.C.-based bank, said Friday. He said the bank plans to resubmit corrected documents within several weeks. Two other companies, Ally Financial Inc.'s GMAC Mortgage unit and JPMorgan Chase, have halted tens of thousands of foreclosure cases after similar problems became public. The document problems could cause thousands of homeowners to contest foreclosures that are in the works or have been completed. If the problems turn up at other lenders, a foreclosure crisis that's already likely to drag on for several more years could persist even longer. Analysts caution that most homeowners facing foreclosure are still likely to lose their homes. State attorneys general, who enforce foreclosure laws, are stepping up pressure on the industry. On Friday, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal asked a state court to freeze all home foreclosures for 60 days. Doing so "should stop a foreclosure steamroller based on defective documents," he said. And California Attorney General Jerry Brown called on JPMorgan to suspend foreclosures unless it could show it complied with a state consumer protection law. The law requires lenders to contact borrowers at risk of foreclosure to determine whether they qualify for mortgage assistance. In Florida, the state attorney general is investigating four law firms, two with ties to GMAC, for allegedly providing fraudulent documents in foreclosure cases. The Ohio attorney general asked judges this week to review GMAC foreclosure cases.

AT&T to Sell iPads to Businesses The phone giant will market Apple's iPad directly to businesses with a discounted wireless data pricing plan to tap into the growing corporate demand for tablet computers and their applications. AT&T will begin offering it to businesses Oct. 28. The announcement comes a day after Verizon Wireless, a Verizon and Vodafone venture, said it will sell the iPad at its stores. Apple climbed 4.1% to 314.74. AT&T dipped 0.6% to 28.33.

Communications Hub With the launch of Skype 5.0 this week, the PC-based voice over IP (VoIP) and messaging service is now integrated with the Facebook social network. While neither Skype nor Facebook are typically considered business platforms, the combination of the two offer many of the benefits and features of unified communications on a budget that small and medium businesses can appreciate: free. UC is more of a concept than a specific technology. UC involves melding voice communications, video conferencing, instant messaging, and e-mail. Skype alone provides most of those elements. Skype established itself as a leading provider of online VoIP communications, and has subsequently also becomes one of the most widely used video chat services. Cable news networks like CNN frequently use Skype video as a means of conducting remote interviews without having to send a camera crew onsite. With Skype 5.0, group video chats can now be conducted between up to ten parties--expanding the capabilities of Skype as a teleconferencing platform. Skype also has instant messaging capabilities, but the value of an instant messaging service is directly related to your number of contacts that are available on it, and Skype has never been a leading platform in that regard. Facebook, on the other hand, has more than half a billion members and has surpassed Google as the online destination that users spend the most time with. Essentially, if there is a contact you want to instant message with, odds are good that contact has a Facebook account, and there is a relatively high chance the contact is on Facebook right now. It may not be a perfect unified communications solution, but the Skype-Facebook alliance delivers many of the essential elements and for small and medium businesses without a budget, the price can't be beat.
