The Mayor’s State of the City Address, hosted by the Carson Chamber of Commerce, luncheon drew local business leaders and politicians for a presentation on the city’s successes and plans for growth. When I was first elected to office, there was no reason to get off the freeway and come to Carson, with a few exceptions — mainly IKEA,” he said. “Since I got elected to office, Carson is now actually birthing its existence as a destination community, which was my intention all along. We’re driving the city of Carson to become something bigger and better. “ Carson is in the midst of feverish housing and business booms after years of delayed development stemming from the recession. City Council members have enthusiastically backed the modernization, using their influence to push for labor interests like local-hire requirements for large projects. Council members have backed the staff in ongoing plans to develop citywide bike lanes, remodel freeway exits so traffic will move more freely, upgrade parks, improve Auto Row on 223rd Street, and redevelop Carson Street with wider sidewalks, new trees, art, lighting, benches and other improvements.
A 357-unit upscale apartment building called The Avalon will go up across from a large complex with 236 apartments, stores and offices called City Center that opened last year. Among other housing projects, 18 single-family homes are planned for the site of a former industrial building at 21801 S. Vera Ave., 11 apartments will be built at 440 E. Sepulveda Blvd., and 152 condominiums are under construction alongside retail businesses at 616 E. Carson St. Also, 65 apartments have been erected at 425 E. Carson St., and 40 more are under construction. Housing isn’t the only thing booming in Carson, though. Win Hyundai opened recently on Auto Row, and adjacent Winn Chevrolet remodeled its facilities. Car Pros Kia of Carson is also expanding with a second dealership where Altman’s Winnebago was at 22020 Recreation Road. A Honda motorcycle dealership will open soon at 2055 E. 223rd St. Other high-profile developments under construction include a 13-screen Cinemark movie theater at the SouthBay Pavilion mall and the Porsche Experience Driving Center. The Mayor promised to keep the city focused on public safety, and made an appeal for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to open a substation at the Pavilion mall.
“I’m a mayor that doesn’t shy away from controversy,” Dear said. “I’m a mayor that does what he says he’ll do. Not everyone is going to agree with what we do, but we have the ultimate responsibility of making the city move forward. My dream, as top leader of this city, is to make Carson a model community of great ethnic diversity, harmony and economic opportunities for residents and corporate citizens.” Dear explained that, since he was a child, he’s never shied away from reaching for what he wants, like grabbing for the brass ring on a merry-go-round. When there’s a metaphorical “brass ring” offered for Carson, Dear similarly jumps at the chance to grab it, he said. “I give my word, and my word is good as gold,” he said. “I’m proud of that. When you’re an elected official and you’re giving the State of the City address, it’s OK to pat yourself on the back like I’m doing. “Carson never had a downtown before. Now we’re getting one (with the Carson Street redevelopment plan). Carson hasn’t had a movie theater in 20 years. That has changed because the City Council works to transform the city into a destination community. That’s what we’re doing and I’ll continue to do that.”
