The 114th Philippine Independence Day Celebration in Carson An all-day festival featuring non-stop cultural and patriotic performances and various entertainment for the entire family will mark the 111th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day. The event will take place on Saturday, June 9, from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Veterans Park, located at 22400 Moneta Avenue in Carson.

The celebration is open to the public and admission is free.

Non-stop entertainment will begin at 8 a.m. featuring big names in the Filipino pop music industry, local bands and cultural groups. Sporting events, a historical reenactment and the traditional Santa Cruzan as well as food and display booths and a children’s game area are also lined up for the event’s special features.

Home to more than 20,000 Filipinos, Carson’s annual Philippine Independence Day Celebration draws thousands of both Filipinos and non-Filipinos of all ages from all over Southern California. The event is a commemoration of the independence of the Philippines from the Spanish government who ruled the island nation for over 400 years.

The annual celebration is a joint undertaking of the City of Carson and the Philippine Independence Day Foundation.

Why Romney Will Pick a Boring White Guy for Vice President The word from GOP insiders close to presumptive GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney is that he will pick "a boring white guy" as his vice presidential running mate. That's true for one obvious reason and another even more fundamental reason about the vice presidency. The obvious is Sarah Palin. There's little debate that she did irreparable damage to the at-best problematic chances of GOP presidential candidate John McCain's chances of bagging the White House in 2008. Palin was a desperate gamble by McCain to melt the frost that ultra-conservatives, and conservative Christian evangelicals had toward him, and hopefully appeal to some women voters. But Palin was the most poorly vetted, polarizing VP candidate in decades. She singlehandedly turned off every minority, environmental, civil liberty, and gay activist group, conservative Democrats, centrist independents, and even an array of old-line GOP establishment conservatives who broke ranks and endorsed Obama.

The irony is that in 2008 Romney would have been the one choice that would have come closest to giving McCain the ticket balance that he needed; plus the equally crucial necessity: money. He would have been a cash cow for McCain and with Obama's phenomenal ability to jingle the campaign cash registers off the counter, this would have been a huge asset to plop on McCain's political balance ledger. This was another fatal blow to McCain's slender chances when Obama slaughtered him on fundraising $750 million to $450 million.

Romney won't make that mistake. That's why some of the names floated as potential Romney VP picks such as Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, and even New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would be too risky. They are either too new, too untested nationally, or too potentially polarizing. It would be Palin all over again.

The bigger reason, though, that he needs a boring white guy on his ticket is that vice presidents must do three things. They must balance the ticket, make up a real or perceived deficit that the presidential contender has, and hopefully help him win the presidency, or at the very least don't help him lose it.

Then-Democratic presidential contender Obama understood this. He picked Joe Biden because he fulfilled all three requirements: balance, experience, and most importantly, took away one of McCain's strongest hit points against Obama -- his perceived woeful lack of foreign policy credentials.

There was much pressure on and temptation for Obama to pick Hillary Clinton as his VP running mate. But she violated the rules of thumb in politics.

She was a Northern, moderate Democrat, as is Obama. She was with lots of personal and political baggage. She would have piled the X Factor of gender bias to the already worrisome X Factor of racial bias on top of Obama.

Bill Clinton was the one recent exception who defied the rule of thumb on balance in picking a VP. Al Gore, like him, was a young, Southern Baptist. It worked because Clinton needed Gore to bolster his pitch that he was not another stereotypical tax-and-spend -- soft on crime, weak on military and national security Democrat. This was the traditional attack point that every Republican going back to Richard Nixon in 1968 hammered their Democratic opponent on.

The vice presidential pick then has become a high stakes game in the evolution of presidential politics from an office that was for decades considering a graveyard for the politically ambitious or at best, an after-thought ceremonial title that carried no real importance or distinction. The VP is more than just a standard dressing up of the presidential ticket. He or she must be able to actually help a presidential candidate win. There have been a few times in past elections when VPs have made a difference. Lyndon Johnson in 1960 is the textbook example of that. He brought legislative savvy, he was a Southern then still in good stead, and he could deliver two or three Deep South states. He did his job. Bush Sr. also helped Reagan in 1980. He brought experience, insider connections, and as a transplanted Southerner, the regional balance that Reagan needed. And he was moderate enough to give Reagan a little edge with moderate Republicans.

A vice president is increasingly called on to be directly involved in discussing, implementing and even helping to formulate domestic and foreign policy. The near textbook example was Biden's blunt statement that he backs gay marriage. Though some claim that this forced Obama's hand and even put him on the spot on a volatile, political minefield issue, Biden essentially reflected a position that for months had been much discussed, debated, and thought through in the Obama administration. The VP as is now the case in presidential politics is often right in the center of the political debate.

The 2012 presidential election will be a nail biter. But even if it was a potential runaway for either Obama or Romney, the vice presidency would still be important. Obama knew it and picked Biden. McCain missed it and picked Palin. Romney won't miss this and will pick a boring white guy.

Cal State Dominguez Hills President Mildred García: A Fond Farewell

Poignant tributes and well wishes marked a farewell reception on May 10 for California State University, Dominguez Hills President Mildred García. More than 250 guests attended to take a look back at the many significant accomplishments García has made during her five-year term at helm of the university.

Discussing what is possibly the broadest accomplishment García has achieved—an increased presence of CSU Dominguez Hills within surrounding communities—guests and speakers alike shared similar views of how she helped to make CSU Dominguez Hills the university of choice in the South Bay. “I think she has been a benefit to this school, in the way the school is seen by the community. My association here is very positive and I sense that [others think that, too] when I say that’s where I teach,” said adjunct instructor of marketing Noel Craven, who has taught at the university for 10 years.

Providing a visible indication of the bonds García made within the community on behalf of the university were the more than a dozen community leaders and elected officials who attended the reception, several of whom spoke their praises at the podium.

“Dr. García came to [CSU Dominguez Hills] with a vision, with a passion and she leaves the university with a legacy that we can all be proud of,” said alumnus and chairman of the California State Board of Equalization Legislative Committee Jerome E. Horton (Class of ’79, B.S., business administration). He went on to say that he and García worked together on such programs as the Connecting Women to Power Business Conference, which hosted more than 15,000 business women to the campus, the Career Pathway to Success program, which brought more than 1,000 students from throughout the greater Los Angeles area, the volunteer 2012 income tax preparation program that will soon return to California citizens nearly $3 million. El Camino College Track & Field: Warriors Perform Well At SoCal Championships The Warriors women placed fifth overall at Southern California Championships held at San Diego Mesa College while the men finished in 16th place, but it was the individual performances in which the team shined.

Rukayah Bent-Mikail continued to excel, recording a 40-5 in the triple jump to take first place and set a new personal best. It was also the No. 3 All-Time performance by an ECC athlete, just shy of topping record-holder Renita Robinson’s top mark of 42-1 ½. Along with the personal accolades, Bent-Mikail also remained undefeated in JC competition this year. Bent-Mikail also qualified for the state championships in the long jump, finishing fourth with a mark of 18-7.

The women’s 1600m relay team of Bent-Mikail, Courtney Morning, Isis Garland and Ronisha Vallery went into the finals as the No. 7 seed, but their time of 3:49.38 was far better than that as they won the event.

On the men’s side, Victor Martin set a personal best and the No. 8 All-Time ECC mark with a 52-7 ½ in the shot put, winning the event.

They all qualified for the state championships set for this week at Cerritos College along with Salina Ropati (2nd in Shot Put), Katrina Wilbanks (4th in pole vault), and Vallery (5th in long jump). http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/

The Stylistics At their peak, the Stylistics were perhaps the most consistent hit makers in Soul Music. They had the best producer in the business in Thom Bell, some of the most infectious material of the early 70s and perhaps the smoothest falsetto lead vocalist in Russell Thompkins, Jr. Formed in the late 60s in Philadelphia , the Stylistics first achieved some regional attention in 1971 with the simplistic "You're A Big Girl Now," most notable for its contrast to the luscious work they would record a year later with Bell . Their Avco Records eponymous debut was a Philly Soul masterpiece, containing a basket of marvelous compositions by Bell and co-writer Linda Creed that would become soul standards covered by other artists for the next 30 years. "You Are Everything," "Betcha By Golly Wow," "Stop Look Listen" and "People Make the World Go Round" all rocketed up the Pop and Soul charts, and immediately made the Stylistics the most sought after Soul balladeers. The group's seamless harmonies and Thompkins silky falsetto blended magically with Bell's lush production.

Brenton Wood Born Alfred Jesse Smith in Shreveport, LA, Brenton Wood moved west to San Pedro, CA, as a child. After learning how to play piano, he began forming vocal groups, inspired by Sam Cooke and Jesse Belvin. One of these groups, Little Freddie & the Rockets, recorded a single in 1958. While he was studying at Compton College, he assumed the name Brenton Wood, naming himself after his home county. Wood formed the Quotations during college, but soon after graduation he became a solo act.

Signing with Double Shot Records, Wood had a hit single in the spring of 1967 with "The Oogum Boogum Song," which reached number 19 on the R&B charts and number 34 pop. It was quickly followed by "Gimme Little Sign," which climbed to number nine pop and matched its predecessor's R&B position. It was a promising start to a career, but Wood wasn't able to follow it through. "Baby You Got It" stalled in the bottom reaches of the pop and R&B Top 40 in early 1968 and "Some Got It, Some Don't" failed to make the pop charts later that year. Wood continued to perform and even recorded a duet with Shirley Goodman, but he wasn't able to reach the charts again until 1977, when "Come Softly to Me" registered in the lower reaches of the R&B Top 100. Following its release, Wood became part of the oldies soul circuit. In 2001, he finally returned with an album of new material, This Love Is for Real.

The Emotions The Emotions are an American all-female soul and R&B singing group. The group was formed in its current hometown of Chicago, Illinois originally consisting of the three Hutchinson sisters, all the children of Joseph and Lillian Hutchinson.

Their association with Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire brought them their greatest success. With White's assistance, the Emotions released the albums Rejoice and Sunbeam in 1977 and 1978. Maurice White-co-produced with Clarence McDonald the single "Best Of My Love" which spent five weeks at number-one on the US pop chart in 1977. Jeanette left in 1977, to give birth to her second child, Pili and their youngest sister Pamela was brought in to record on the album "Rejoice" and perform live dates. In 1978, Jeanette returned to the group. In collaboration with Earth, Wind & Fire the group scored big with the single, "Boogie Wonderland", which was a top 10 hit in 1979. The group continued to record together during the 1980s, and were signed briefly with Motown Records at one point. Their last recording to date was 1996's "The Emotions Live" released on their own record label Sunbeam Records. The Emotions, continue to perform with Wanda, Pamela, and Sheila. They continue to perform and make personal appearances. Wanda has three daughters, two of whom plan to enter the music industry themselves.

Sexually Active and Single?

By Creflo Dollar We need to talk about sex, particularly sex among singles. The media has too much to say about sex. Billboards go as close to the edge as they can to flaunt sex.

Turn on the television, and every day, we’re bombarded with images, many that hinge upon the lewd and the crude. Now here’s a shocker, similar to how a new employee waits 90 days before enjoying a company’s benefits, there’s a concept going around which says, women who date should wait 90 days before sharing benefits of a sexual nature. And there’s more! Popular opinion says 90 days is too long to wait! Did anyone ever think about going to The Expert? God. After all, He created sex—for a husband and a wife, that is.

The Word of God is very clear concerning sexual activity among singles. It is called fornication, which is consensual sexual intercourse between two people who are not married to each other. The Bible calls it sin sex. Yes, there’s marital sex and then there’s sin sex.

In Corinthians 6:18, God says, “Flee fornication.” That means don’t toy with it, debate it, or consider it—flee! Strong words for sure, but God is serious about this— seriously trying to save you from harmful and unnecessary pitfalls.

However sex, like all gifts from God, requires responsibility on the part of the receivers. For example, God richly provided Adam and Eve with the Garden of Eden, but they were not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. When they disobeyed by willfully eating the fruit of that tree, there were adverse consequences, not just for the two of them but for all of mankind! And just like in the garden, the results of sin are not limited to one person. What happens to one affects another. For instance, the act of fornication involves at least two people. However, these days, many more could be involved, as in group sex. If a pregnancy results, another life or more is added to the equation. One bad decision, in the heat of passion, or weakly following popular opinion can affect an entire family for a lifetime.

Another result of “sin sex” is sexually transmitted diseases—or STDs. The numbers for people affected by STDs is on the rise and is at pandemic levels, affecting a large population. Remember the saying, “If everyone else jumps off a bridge, would you do it too?” Well, before you decide to follow popular opinion or a media craze, stop and think about it. Also, remember you will receive the corresponding popular results we just talked about, not to mention social embarrassment, a broken heart, or the ultimate—missing God and missing heaven.

Popular opinion can vary from day to day. James 1:7 says God does not change. In the end, God is always right. It may take awhile before it is obvious, but He has the last word.

Moreover, the Word of God is accurate, dependable, wise, and remains standing, long after popular opinion isn’t popular anymore.

If you are ever in doubt about whether the Bible is still relevant or current with the times, the book of Isaiah makes it plain. Remember these words: “The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8, NLT).

RUBY RED GRAPEFRUIT MARGARITA Compliments Wolfgang Puck These tasty, refreshing margaritas are easy to make but are even EASIER to drink. They were the hit of my party last weekend but Sunday morning was a little slow going.

Despite its name, I didn't have the time to make simple syrup so I substituted light agave nectar in place and it worked like a champ. Adjust to your taste but I squirted a couple of lazy laps of agave inside my blender and it added to perfect complement of sweetness to the tart ruby reds.

Ingredients 1 wedge Ruby Red grapefruit Coarse kosher salt 6 ounces tequila 1/3 cup Ruby Red vodka 1/4 cup simple syrup 1 cup Ruby Red grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed or from a carton 1/4 freshly squeezed lime juice 4 cups ice cubes 2 crosswise slices Ruby Red grapefruit, cut into quarters

Directions Use the wedge of grapefruit to rub the rims of 6 margarita glasses with grapefruit juice. Dip the rims in the kosher salt to coat. Set aside as you prepare the margaritas.

Place the tequila, vodka, simple syrup, grapefruit juice, lime juice and ice in a bar blender and puree until smooth. Divide the margarita between 6 glasses and garnish with the grapefruit quarters.

1910 Los Angeles International Air Meet at Dominguez Field The Los Angeles International Air Meet (January 10 to January 20, 1910) was among the earliest airshows in the world and the first major airshow in the United States. It was held in Los Angeles County, California at Dominguez Field in present day Carson, California. Spectator turnout numbered approximately 254,000 over 11 days of ticket sales. The Los Angeles Times called it "one of the greatest public events in the history of the West."

Los Angeles Preparations Curtiss and Willard selected the Los Angeles, California area for its favorable winter weather. After receiving a promise of participation from Glenn Curtiss, Knabenshue contacted Dick Ferris, a Los Angeles athletic promoter and balloon enthusiast, who in turn mobilized local businesses and formed an organizing committee.

A field near Santa Anita Park was considered, but physical obstructions such as tall trees led the aviators to search elsewhere. By December 1909, they selected Dominguez Field atop a small hill that had been developed by Manuel Dominguez on land once part of Rancho San Pedro, an early Spanish land grant.

Once the site was finalized, promotion of the meet began and grandstands with a capacity of between 50,000 and 60,000 were erected. An aviators' camp was also constructed nearby. The passenger platform at the local Pacific Electric Railway station was expanded to accommodate visitors to the rural site who might travel from downtown Los Angeles.

Organizers invited pilots of monoplanes, biplanes, balloons, and dirigibles. To reinforce the event's "international" billing, French aviator Louis Paulhan, a notable from the 1909 Reims Meet, was invited. Paulhan was guaranteed a small sum of money as encouragement to attend. Cash prizes were allotted for competitive events in altitude, speed, and endurance.

Participants The aviators who took part in the events - Glenn Curtiss and Louis Paulhan can be seen towards the right side. The 1910 Air Meet drew many famous aviators, most of whom were American. Glenn Curtiss, American aviation pioneer and founder of the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company was the most famous. Other participants included Roy Knabenshue, Charles Willard, Lincoln Beachey and Charles K. Hamilton, Howard Warfield Gill, and Clifford B. Harmon, many of whom are listed among the Early Birds of Aviation.

French aviators at the event included Louis Paulhan and Didier Masson.

The Wright brothers did not take part in the event, but were there with their lawyers in an attempt to prevent Paulhan and Curtiss from flying. The Wrights claimed that the ailerons on their aircraft infringed patents. Notwithstanding their allegations, Paulhan and Curtis still made flights.

Paulhan gave William Randolph Hearst his first experience of flight. However, William Boeing, who had been enthused by the new invention of the airplane, was unable to get a ride on any aircraft at the air meet: While attending the first American Air Meet in Los Angeles, Boeing asked nearly every aviator for a ride, but no one said yes except Louis Paulhan. For three days Boeing waited, but on the 4th day he discovered Paulhan had already left the meet. Possibly, one of the biggest missed opportunities in Paulhan's life was the ride he never gave Boeing.

As part of the larger Wright brothers' patent cases, the Wrights actually won monetary damages in U.S. courts for Paulhan's public performances that day.

Local Creations In addition to the aviators billed in the event’s programs, there were many hobbyists and inventors wishing to make a name for themselves in the new aviation industry. A $1500 prize for a locally designed and built machine that successfully flew helped to ensure a high turn-out from California inventors and would-be aviators. Some of these were close copies or modifications on already successful designs, like the Bleriot monoplane or Curtiss biplane, but some were truly original creations in every sense of the word.

J.S. Zerbe's Multi-plane One of the more unusual was Los Angeles resident J.S. Zerbe’s so-called "Multiplane," a construction which boasted five separate "planes" of wings attached to an elaborate chassis. Unfortunately for Zerbe, his creation hit a hole in the field and collapsed during take-off, ruining several of the wings and making flight impossible.

Zerbe was also responsible for the creation of a "double biplane" for W.J. Davis. This machine consisted of "four decks of equal size, arranged two fore and two aft" and two propellers.

…An estimated 254,000 tickets were sold, and gate receipts were roughly $137,500.

During the time the meet was running, streetcars ran to Dominguez Fields every 2 minutes from the Pacific Electric station in Los Angeles.

A.E. Mueller, another Los Angeles resident, created an aircraft which was so large for the time that it was dubbed "Mueller’s Monster" by the LA Times, who stated that it was "by far the largest aeroplane in existence". The plane measured seventy-five feet long by fifty feet wide, had a 600 lb (270 kg)., 50 horsepower (37 kW) engine, and weighed around a ton.[10] Mueller believed that by creating such a heavy machine he would be able to avoid "the necessity of delicate balancing in light wind currents."

J.H. Klassen, also of Los Angeles, constructed a gyroscope for the contest, as well as entering a monoplane. His design, described by the LA Times as "quite novel", consisted of "two 12-foot circular planes in the front, and two 8-foot planes in the rear." Klassen hoped that the "gyroscopic motion of the revolving planes" would aid greatly in the craft's stability in the air.

Attendance An estimated 254,000 tickets were sold, and gate receipts were roughly $137,500. The great crowd turn-out, averaging more than 20,000 spectators per day, made it possible to return $1.25 to "the subscribers to the aviation fund for every dollar advanced".

Competitive Events Paulhan Rising - Los Angeles. Louis Paulhan at takeoff in a Farman III biplane at the 1910 Los Angeles International Air Meet at Dominguez Field Aviators competed for the $75,000 in prizes according to a standard procedure. The aviators would first "notify the judges for which prize they [were] about to compete"and then fly around the 1.61-mile (2.59 km) course, always in an anti-clockwise direction. Aviators were informed that they "must not fly over the grand stand or any place where a crowd is assembled without permission of the judges." Violators of this rule were penalized.

All flights taking place between 2 p.m. and sunset counted towards scoring for prizes. Aviators were encouraged to fly as many times per day as possible, and to make as many record attempts in the competitive events as possible. In fact, those contestants who "do not make a flight every day between the hours of two and five o'clock p. m. of one complete circuit of the course in competition for the speed or endurance competitions will be penalized five per cent of their best time for the prize." Only the best time was counted during the judging at the end of the meet.

Ballooning competitions and events were also held in the Los Angeles suburb of Huntington Park throughout the week. These events included attempts to reach a new altitude record and passenger flights.

Prize Winners Paulhan dominated the Dominguez meet, winning $19,000 in prize money with the following accomplishments: New flight endurance record; carrying a passenger almost 110 miles (177 kilometers) in his Farman III biplane in 1 hour, 49 minutes.

New altitude mark of approximately 4,164 feet (1,269 m).

He also performed several aerial feats during the week, and carried U.S. Army 1st Lieutenant Paul W. Beck aloft on January 19 for one of the first tests of aerial bomb-dropping.

Glenn Curtiss set a new air speed record of approximately 55 miles per hour (89 kilometers per hour), and took home the prize for the best quick start.
