Raising A Father By Arjun Sen During Arjun Sen’s tenure in the corporate world, a wise, corporate stair-climbing friend told him, “Arjun, in order to achieve bigger glories, one must make smaller sacrifices in life.” It was clear he referred to spending less time with family, not being there for children’s special moments, and similar “small” sacrifices in personal life. Sen learns the hard way that these sacrifices come with large costs, and in Raising a Father he recounts his journey to this realization. Website: www.raisingafather.com.

ARTDAILY.ORG World Press Photo Contest Winner

Julian Mendoza From the May, 2010 issue of Lowrider Arte By LRA Staff Photography by Edgar Hoill

The long arm of the World Wide Web has given artists an opportunity to create, inform, and spread their message and art globally. So when you find an artist who is yet to be published it truly is a treasure, and that is exactly the case with Julian Mendoza. He's a Southern California artist that was born and raised in the Los Angeles Harbor/South Bay area, and he's lived on the same block for well over 50 years. But even deeper than the roots that he's planted in his neighborhood are the roots that he's vested in his craft. As a graduate of L.A. Trade Tech back in the '70s, Julian began working as a commercial artist that specialized in package design, but once his time card was punched and he was back in the comfort of his home, he soon found himself immersed in a world that was dedicated to drawing Bombs, Zoot-Suiters and Pachucas.

Charles Ommanney, United Kingdom, Getty Images for Newsweek. The annual World Press Photo Contest is at the core of the organization's activities. It offers an overview of how press photographers tackle their work worldwide and how the press gives us the news, bringing together pictures from all parts of the globe to reflect trends and developments in photojournalism.

If you were to ask him when he first took up the art of drawing, he'll be the first to let you know that he doesn't remember, but he'll be quick to tell you that he first acknowledged his interest in Pachuco stuff while browsing through family albums and seeing the striking images of his father in zoot suits and his mom dressed as a Pachuca. Today, Julian spends a good amount of his time with that same program, and you'll find him changing lives at school programs as well as prison and youth camps. As for his art, well, the art still remains a huge part of his passion, and he's gained a cult following of global collectors that treat his piece as they should-and that's treasured artifacts. He's an artist for those in the know and a man that is devoted to changing lives but never changing his passion and positive outlook for the lifestyle of Zoot-Suiters and Pachucas. The Latino Museum of History, Art And Culture & LA Opera present: Ring Festival LA Angelino Myths Celebrating the Arts, LA Style April – June 2010 More than a century ago, composer Richard Wagner conceived his epic four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen as a festival event that completely engaged the city of Bayreuth, Germany. In 2010, LA Opera will join forces with more than 75 cultural and educational institutions in Los Angeles to stage Ring Festival LA. Southern Californians and cultural tourists from around the world will be able to enjoy a wide variety of special exhibitions, performances, symposia and special events all centered on LA Opera’s upcoming presentation of Wagner’s Ring cycle in 2010, the first time that the epic masterwork will be presented in its entirety in Los Angeles. Ring Festival LA events will take place in a wide variety of venues throughout Southern California from April 15 through June 30, 2010, with each organization providing its own unique point of view on the influences of Wagner’s art and philosophy from the 19th century to the present day. It is important to note here that while Richard Wagner is considered one of the most important and influential of all composers, he is also rightly reviled as having been an anti-Semite. Wagner’s writings on the subject percolated into German politics and popular culture and, decades after the composer’s death, were celebrated by Adolph Hitler and the Third Reich. It is the Company’s belief that opera has value not only as musical and theatrical entertainment, but as a way to gain important historical insight and to explore moral issues. Ring Festival LA will specifically address the subject of Wagner’s anti-Semitism in several contexts, including seminars, panel conversations and performances. For more information visit www.ringfestivalla.com.

Profile:

Tori Spelling

Through the '90s, Tori Spelling was known as TV's most famous virgin – which is what happens when your father, legendary TV producer Aaron Spelling, casts you in his hit show, Beverly Hills, 90210, and refuses to let you be deflowered on air for seven long years. Though nepotism made her a star, Spelling's determination and self-deprecating wit endeared her to audiences on 10 seasons of 90210. After her father's death in 2006, she weathered a well-publicized rift with her mother, Candy, but the birth of Spelling's son, Liam Aaron, with second husband Dean McDermott brought the estranged mother and daughter closer together. In 2008, Spelling, who stars with McDermott in their Oxygen reality show, welcomed daughter Stella. Represented by Ruthanne Secunda, United Talent Agency. 310-246-6088
