The Smith Archive Collection We are who we are. In 1965 Dr. Bob Smith invented and sold the world’s first thermal goggle lens out of the back of his van. He was a free-thinking visionary with a lust for life. In 1979 we introduced our first line of sunglasses for people who lived life outside walls, “Do it your way…but see it our way.”

Even then the idea was to provide superior quality sunglasses to make your experience outside better. That was it. This has always been about making product for people like Bob Smith.

So we celebrate our history by re-introducing sunglasses from our past. The Archive Collection pieces are exact remakes of original Smith frames from over the past 36 years. Each piece is labeled with its original year and offered in original colorways.

After 50 years we still have a lust for life. And why wouldn’t we? It’s easy to make great product when you love what you do.

The Questa is pulled directly from our 1990 Moto’s Series. The distinct retro-pattern etched into the metal of the nose, wire-core temple, and round eye wire speak to Smith’s history when glasses were designed a block off Main Street in downtown Ketchum, Idaho, and ski lifts were seconds away.

The clean corners and traditionally shaped temple of the Tioga is a classic cool for outdoor lovers, same as it was when originally released in 1993. Created at a time within Smith where the designers were also the catalog models, the engineers came in late on powder days, and we just walked out the backdoor to get extreme, the Tioga is still perfect for life beyond office walls.

It’s like noise-canceling headphones for your eyes. Glare off of horizontal surfaces like snow, water, and asphalt, decreases depth perception, and reduces visual acuity which causes eye fatigue. We precisely align the polarized visual layer inside our lenses to filter out 99.9% of this “visual static” for a finely tuned view of the action.

ChromaPop™, Techlite glass and Carbonic lens constructions are optimized to provide a variety of optical and impact-resistant benefits. We precisely align the finest polarized filters and finish our lenses with multi-layer mirror, Anti-Reflective (A/R), anti-scratch, and Hydroleophobic lens coatings. Smith’s Tapered Lens Technology straightens out the incoming light rays by progressively tapering the lens from the optical center toward the peripheral view. POLARCHROMIC: POLARIZED LENSES WITH PHOTOCHROMIC TECHNOLOGY TO ADAPT TO EVER-CHANGING LIGHT CONDITIONS

With Smith Polarchromic, we combine the glare-free benefits of advanced polarization with UV sensitive, self-tint-adjusting photochromic technology to bring you the most advanced sunglass lenses we have ever created. How do we do it?

Precise amounts of silver halide crystals are infused into the lens material during their creation. These microscopic crystals automatically change orientation in response to UV light which results in a shift in tint either increasing or decreasing Visible Light Transmission (VLT), fine tuning the tint of your lens in response to ambient light conditions as they change throughout the day. The result? You get a lens which offers crisp optics and soothing light levels at all hours, allowing you to focus on what matters most from dawn to dusk.

Fit and function BASE CURVE

The base curve is the radius of the sphere measured from the back of the lens. Smith features styles with 6, 8, and 9 base lens curvature. Models that include 6 base tend to be more flat relative to your face. While 9 base styles provide the maximum amount of wrap around your face.
