The SMITH x HFF partnership runs deep and it runs strong. Since 2009, SMITH has supported the HFF’s efforts to provide rehabilitation support to athletes with life-changing injuries and help them get back outdoors doing what they love. Whether it’s on snow, dirt, or water, SMITH supports HFF’s adaptive ski, bike, fish and surf camps throughout the year. Together they have been casting a net of safety over the outdoor sports for 17 years together, these collaborative products get individuals back to their communities using sport as the byproduct of enjoying the outdoors together.

17 years is a long time. How did this partnership come together?
SMITH Optics was a sponsor of mine before my injury, Joe Weller (a former East Coast Sales Rep) gave a me pair of SMITH Fuse Goggles, SMITH Poles, and SMITH Sunglasses at the bottom of Sugarbush Halfpipe when I was 16 years old and every day since that day I have always worn, represented and used all SMITH products.
When I got hurt, when I started the organization, and as this organization continues to grow, SMITH continues to support, believe, and contribute to the organization. SMITH is an exclusive partner of the organization.
Aside from the organic relationship, at its core, how does SMITH fit into the HFF mission?
Our core missions align with one and another, We Ride Together. SMITH makes the best products, has the best employees, and supports the outdoor sports community. It is a no brainer to partner with the brand. SMITH believes in community, we are grateful to have SMITH in our ‘Ohana.
For those who aren’t familiar with HFF, why is it so important to the outdoor/action sports industry?
We give hope to those that sustain life-changing injuries. To individuals that thought they would never be able to ski a trail, ride a trail, fish a river, rally a bike, or explore the mountains in a side-by-side. We provide opportunities and the identity of being an athlete to anyone that sustains a life-changing injury. We know that community is a byproduct of sport, and we are building the largest community, one that we call an ‘Ohana.
What does the future of HFF look like?
Our goal is to have five areas of programmatic change across North America. We currently have a motorsports division in Colorado, a soon to be announced fishing division in Montana, a bike division in California / Nevada and locating our brick and mortar locations for snow and surf.

BirdsEye technology takes spherical lenses one step further so that you can see even more. The bottom portion of the lens curves downward and inward towards the face, giving you a 25% increase in your overall field of view.

Our proprietary blend of ChromaPop™ lens dyes & PhotoChromic technology is specially designed to perform in freezing temperatures. This lens boasts a category shift from 1 to 3, or 51% -16% VLT. It happens two times faster than our previous PhotoChromic lens. And it’s made with a winter formulation designed to react to visible and UV light, not temperatures.
SMITH MAG technology allows you to quickly adapt your lenses for any condition.
MAG technology allows you to quickly change lenses for any riding condition. Strong and weatherproof magnets guide the lens into the secure anchored position.
Once in position, the lens carrier provides a patent-pending dual locking mechanical engagement to secure the lens. With the SMITH MAG’s two locking mechanisms, the lens stays locked tight for whatever the hill throws at you. A simple push of one lever at either side of the lens releases the lens for easy swapping as the light and conditions change.
Strong and weatherproof N52 magnets automatically guide the lens into the anchored position. The magnetic function speeds up lens changes to get you back out riding faster.
Plastic grips are carefully considered and designed at the corners of the lens for easy interchangeability while protecting the surface of the lens.

Normally, our eye’s retina has trouble perceiving the difference between both blue and green light, as well as red and green light. The Mips safety system is designed to provide added safety for helmets in many accidents. For certain impacts, the Mips system can reduce harmful forces that might otherwise be transferred to the user’s head.
Traditional helmets are designed and tested for straight impacts, but most impacts are angled, which can cause rotational motion to the head.
The rotational motion can cause brain injuries.
Mips
The Low Friction Layer is intended to help reduce the rotational motion to the head in certain angled impacts.
The brain is typically more sensitive to rotational motion than linear motion because it has shear properties similar to water or gel. When different parts of the brain move relative to each other because of rotational motion, the tissues can stretch, which can cause concussions or other brain injuries.
Rotational motion is a common cause for concussions and more severe brain injury in oblique hits to the head. The Mips system consists of a low friction layer that is mounted inside the helmet. In a crash, the low friction layer is designed to move slightly inside the helmet to help redirect forces away from the head. This is intended to help reduce the risk of brain injury.
Most traditional helmets are designed for straight impacts, but most impacts are angled. The low friction layer may reduce the rotational force of angled impacts.
Unlike traditional helmets, which are mainly designed and tested for straight impacts, the Mips system’s low-friction layer mimics the brain’s own system for protection against rotational motion.
Our helmets are designed to perfectly align with our goggle frames. This alignment eliminates “gaper gap” and ensures proper ventilation to allow for fog-free lenses.
Ultimate integration starts with the precise fit of the SMITH goggle and helmet. Our helmets are designed to match the curvature of the goggle frame, eliminating “gaper gap” and allowing precise alignment between the helmet AirEvac™ and the goggle venting systems.
Goggles fog when standard helmets trap warm, moist air in the goggle chamber. SMITH’s AirEvac™ ventilation systems generate maximum airflow that pulls warm, fog-causing air out of the goggle. The warm air is allowed to exhaust out of the top of the goggle and begin its path through the helmet’s AirEvac™ system.
The warm air that originally built up in the goggle has been forced out via the AirEvac™ ventilation system, has traveled through the AirEvac™ EPS vent channels, and is now being exhausted at the furthest distance possible from the goggle. Temperature control is the most important feature when considering how to enjoy the entire day on the hill.
