s a kid, I used to think of May as the gateway to summer fun. Counting down the days for the school year to end, I would often daydream of all the activities waiting for my cousins and me at our grandparents’ home on the lake. Whether you live here or are just discovering the lake for the first time, Laker magazine has compiled a list of fun activities you can do with the kids and grandkids, and we’re sure there will be no chance for boredom!

Also included in this issue, our gardening columnist offers tips on keeping the wildlife from devouring your favorite plants. Plus, we showcase a Goodview home that has undergone a dramatic transformation with before and after photos! Since with our May issue we are publishing Laker magazine monthly through August, be sure to check out our spotlight on the lake’s volunteer fire and rescue agencies, as well as our question-and-answer profiles from folks who have moved to the area.

To a deer, your garden looks like an irresistible buffet. But while fencing is the foolproof way of keeping them out, there are also a few plants you can employ to send them snacking elsewhere. Story and photography by Catriona Tudor Erler

While most lakers appreciate the many charms of Bambi and his cohorts, they are less enamored of Odocoileus virginianus when herds make themselves at home in their carefully cultivated land, turning the garden into a dining room. Nothing short of a Mexican border-style, anti-immigration wall is guaranteed to keep these foraging beasts at bay, but there are measures you can take to minimize the likelihood of them doing damage.
Don’t fence me in Fencing is the most foolproof way to keep both deer and rabbits out of the garden. While deer can’t leap tall buildings in a single bound, they can jump vertically to 8 feet. An effective deer fence needs to be at least that

tall. A barrier, such as a hedge, that is 5 feet tall and wide also will prevent deer from taking the leap inside. Several companies have developed relatively inexpensive plastic mesh fencing products designed to keep deer out. The black netting, which blends effectively into the landscape, can be stretched between trees and/ or fence posts to create a discrete separation between the garden space and the world beyond. While the plastic is durable against weather elements, deer do occasionally tear the fabric, so it’s a good idea to walk the fence line periodically to check for needed repairs. High voltage fences are another option. When turned on, the live wire will give a significant shock to any creature that touches it. If an 8-foot fence to keep out deer is not to your budget or liking, try crisscrossing string from tree to tree at multiple levels. Some people have found it baffles the deer enough to keep them away. This baffling string array is particularly effective when it surrounds a vegetable garden. To protect tender saplings you value, surround them with cylinders of wire mesh. While deer leap over fences, rabbits burrow underneath, and they can squeeze through tight spaces. If

Thumper and his friends are nuisances, you need to extend the fence underground by at least 6 inches with wire mesh no larger than 1 inch to keep out baby bunnies.
Use plants deer avoid A deer’s motto might well be, “Desperate times call for desperate measures.” When food is scarce, they will eat almost any plant, even ones that make them sick. Nevertheless, there are some plants that they are less likely to devour, and they are your safest bets in gardens where marauding deer are a problem. Deer tend to avoid some bulbs, including leucojum, iris, daffodils and calla lilies. They also ignore tulip foliage, but they will eat the flowers with relish, leaving the topped LEFT Black stems. Among vining plants that are considered safe from deer are Carolina jessamine, English ivy, potato vine, Costa Rican nightshade and Cape honeysuckle. Do be aware, though, that no list of plants is completely accurate. Deer’s taste varies from region to region and even from year to year. A plant that’s safe one year may be the deer’s favorite dish the next.
Good plants for you, bad plants for deer Even native plants aren’t deer-proof. After all, they’ve got to have something to eat. However, the following short list of non-native ornamental shrubs is a good bet to enhance the beauty of your garden without the heartbreak and financial loss of deer-devoured plants. Sambucus Black Lace Distributed by Proven Winners, an organization dedicated to seeking out and marketing plants that have been tested to perform well in most parts of the country, the Black Lace elderberry shrub is indeed a winner. The purple-black, feathery foliage is a good substitute for Japanese maples, and sets off the pale pink saucer-sized flowers that open in spring. Shiny blackberries grace the plant in fall. before the birds do and make elderberry wine or jam. Plant Black Lace in full sun in a space where it can grow to its full 8-foot height and width without pruning. You’ll be rewarded with a stellar specimen plant with a graceful, airy form and a striking color. Syringa Bloomerang Purple Aptly named the Bloomerang Purple, this shrub flowers profusely with lavender-purple blossoms in spring, takes a rest during the summer heat, and then makes a comeback in autumn, continuing its fragrant floral display until frost. A compact, mounded shrub that achieves a 5-foot height and width at maturity, it has good resistance to powdery mildew, a problem that plagues many lilacs. It works well as a specimen plant, as part of a foundation grouping, in a perennial or mixed shrub border, and in containers. Feed with a slow-release fertilizer in early spring and remove spent blooms to encourage reblooming. grows about 10 feet tall and wide, also helps minimize weed growth under the plant. In addition to the generous display of trumpet-like pink blossoms in spring, Dream Catcher offers season-long interest with its sunset-hued foliage. It grows well in shade, even the notoriously tricky dry shade, where its delicately tinted foliage provides light and cheer in summer before turning a striking orange-red in fall. A hard-to-find-plant, check with Lazy S’S Farm & Nursery in Barboursville. Bluebeard — Caryopteris incana Sunshine Blue Smaller than most shrubs, but bushier than most perennials, Caryopteris is a wonderful late-season bloomer that deer avoid. Sunshine Blue, which grows about 3-feet by 3-feet, features amethyst blue flowers in late summer and fall that contrast with the bright yellow foliage. In addition to being deer resistant, these sun-loving, drought-tolerant plants attract butterflies. More recently introduced than Sunshine Blue is ‘Good as Gold’, which has lemon yellow foliage and produces a profusion of large blue flowers late in summer. It was selected as one of Louisiana State University’s Top Perennial Performers for the 2013 season. Weigela florida ‘Eyecatcher’ ‘Eyecatcher’ is a compact hybrid within the Weigela shrub family that is advertised to grow 2-feet to 3-feet tall and wide. However, at the lake mine grew to about 5 feet in both directions. It lives up to its ‘Eyecatcher’ name with its showy rose-red tubular flowers early in the season that repeat blooms later in the year with a scattering of the pretty blossoms. Even when not in flower, it’s a winner with its showy variegated foliage with bright golden yellow leaf edges surrounding irregular medium-green centers. Grow it in full sun for the best flower display. Deutzia gracilis Chardonnay Pearls This compact deciduous shrub has bright yellow foliage in spring that sets off the myriad of white, pearllike buds. The flower buds themselves are decorative, so there’s no reason to feel impatient waiting for them to open into beautiful, pure white star-shaped flowers. When the flowers have faded, this plant continues to shine with its bright yellow foliage that turns green as the season progresses. This nicely formed 3-foot by 3-foot shrub does well in shrub borders as a foundation plant or as an anchor in a perennial border.
Miscellaneous tricks
Other tricks and techniques to foil deer that people have employed with mixed success include sprinkling
human hair among the plants, hanging bars of scented soap from trees, sprinkling urine (preferably male) around the periphery of the garden and spreading Milorganite (the fertilizer made in Milwaukee from treated sewage) around the plants. Like the commercial plant sprays designed to repel deer, Milorganite needs to be reapplied after a rain. One year a friend made decoy tomatoes out of red modeling clay and hung the clay balls around the vegetable garden. Looking out her kitchen window one morning, she saw a deer step up to the vegetable garden and bite on one of the decoy tomatoes. According to her report, the deer got a startled look in its eye and spat it out. The word of those disgusting tomatoes must have spread among the local deer population because she harvested her entire tomato crop that year. However, they got wise to her ruse, which only worked that first year.

e must have looked at 50 houses before deciding on this one,” said Kristin Mullen of their lake-home search a couple of years ago. “I didn’t want a lot of steps to the dock and water, so I liked this fairly level lot,” said husband Travis. “Plus, here we have 12 acres and 900 feet of shoreline. That ensures our privacy and gives us lots of space for our dogs to run around. But I knew we’d end up gutting the place.” Kristin nodded. ”We planned for it to be a project house.” And the Goodview home the couple found near channel marker R-78 has been just that. The original interior felt dark and gloomy, not from lack of windows, but because there was wood everywhere. There were wooden beams, dark wood kitchen cabinets, wood on the ceiling and wood on all the walls — not wood paneling, but beautiful planks honed, fitted and installed by two Amish craftsmen. Travis and Kristin were unsure of how to handle all those existing wood surfaces or where to start updating their house that was built in 1979. “We contacted a few decorator-type people, but all they wanted to do was sell us their tile and flooring,” Kristin said. “Then, we found CIRCLE Design on the internet, and they were just perfect for us. They gave us ideas and options. We sent them hundreds of pictures of things we liked, lots of stuff from Houzz.com. Their

computer renderings, which showed exactly what the finished rooms would look like, incorporated many of those ideas.” What did they do with all the wood? “We left it on the walls and ceiling, covered it with drywall and painted it a neutral gray,” Travis said. They kept the ceiling beams but replaced the dark wooden kitchen cabinets with sleek, modern-looking ones. Stylish gray quartz countertops below tile backsplashes, stainless steel appliances (including Travis’ must-have splurge: a built-in cappuccino maker) updated the look.

In the course of remodeling, the footprint of the kitchen and adjoining great room changed. Half-walls were removed, appliances were relocated, and a new island and a dining bar were installed. Kitchen linoleum, along with the sea of carpeting found everywhere, were ripped out and replaced by new engineered hardwood flooring that unified the main living areas. The great room fireplace, originally surrounded by river rock, was covered and replaced with sleek ledger stone. Wood storage areas are now built into the design. Since purchasing the home two and a half years ago, Travis and Kristin have changed the exterior color from a natural-colored cedar siding to a painted green with trim accents in light cream. Outside the great room is an oversized deck for entertaining where Kristin has already updated the railings with the home’s cream trim color. When they bought the house, the lake was nearly invisible due to a forest of trees and undergrowth, which has now been pared down and limbed up to allow views onto the upper Roanoke River arm of the lake’s main channel. The couple loves in-season outdoor living, and before starting on the house, they had the dock torn out, relocated and enlarged. Now there is plenty of space for evening partying there — bathed in what is a unique lighting system: it’s indirect and soft, changes colors and creates an inviting aura that simply begs to be enjoyed. Now that the main living areas of the home have been modernized, Travis and Kristin are moving on to the other aspects of their redo — the five bedrooms and the lower level. Because the home’s non-wooden walls and ceilings were done in dated swirly plaster, Travis has been doing a lot of sanding to smooth the texture before he eventually paints. “Look at this bedroom,” Kristin said. “It has aqua walls and a pink ceiling!” “The great thing about CIRCLE Design is that they gave us

so many ideas to consider,” Travis said. “We couldn’t afford to A lifelong resident of the beautiful Smith M MLS #839 do everything in one burst. Some things we’ll do ourselves like sanding and painting bedrooms. Other things, like new front and back doors, we will soon purchase.” U And Kristin credits CIRCLE for helping them get a kick-start ED R E on their fixer-upper. “They guided us through this remodel,” she IC PR said. “We just didn’t know where to start, and this was all stuff I would have never picked by myself, but we love how it turned out.”
The warm green and cream trim on the exterior echoes the palette inside. Outside the great room (above) is an oversized deck for entertaining that offers sweeping views of the lake.

Story by lindsey wagnon Photography by heather turner
A
few years ago, Smith Mountain Lake homeowner Cynthia Sterrett found herself in need of a professional service that’s not easy to come by — a property caretaker. With her main home in Blacksburg and another house in Florida, Sterrett was concerned time away from her Smith Mountain Lake home could result in a myriad of potential problems, such as storm damage, burst pipes or a break-in. Thankfully, a search on the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce’s website led Sterrett to 2J’s LLC. Janet Thorne, who owns 2J’s with husband Jim (he does the tech, paperwork and accounting side of the business), provides lake residents, primarily in the Westlake and surrounding areas, with regular attention to property upkeep. “My husband and I moved to the SML area a little over eight years ago,” Thorne said. “At that time, I had always been in office work and I was ready to make a change. I came up with the idea of house cleaning around the lake. I’m very organized and detailed, and wanted to put those skills into something different.” House cleaning may have been the beginning, but Thorne quickly realized there was a need to offer homeowners more than that. With Smith Mountain Lake being a popular place for second or even third homes, where residents aren’t always living here full time, true home upkeep requires more than cleaning. Thorne’s attention to detail led to a greater level of property assurance for her clients. “I provide full-service support, including house checks, shopping, errands and appointment setting,” Thorne said. “For example, I recently set the appointment for a refrigerator delivery and met the deliverers at the residents’ home so the homeowners wouldn’t have to make a special trip here.” Thorne also does dock and watercraft checks, letting residents know how water levels are and making sure outdoor furniture is secure. According to Thorne, the type of house checks she provides requires having a comprehensive list and an observant eye. In less than an hour, Thorne can ensure everything is A-OK with a home and property. “I go in and turn on the water, let faucets drain, flush the toilets, make sure there are no leaks. I walk around the home, check the ceiling for signs of pipe bursts or water damage,” Thorne said. “I make sure appliances are working properly and that the exterior isn’t showing signs of damage.” Recently, Thorne noticed a shingle had blown off a
What began as a house cleaning business for Janet and Jim Thorne turned into a business taking care of homes for owners who don’t live at the lake full time. With a comprehensive list and an attention to detail, Janet Thorne says it takes less than an hour to check a home.

customer’s roof from high winds. She informed them of the problem, and they were able to have it taken care of immediately. “I also provide shopping services, such as picking up groceries for those who are too busy or home-bound,” she said. “I’ll sometimes do online ordering for customers and bring packages into the home.” Sterrett can attest to the value of having someone like Thorne available to check in and keep things running. “It’s reassuring to know someone’s checking on your home and everything’s fine when we’re not there,” Sterrett said. “Janet’s very professional and very efficient.

I’ve had other people check in and not notice as many things.” Before homeowners return home, Thorne said she often provides extra preparation to the properties she oversees. “Before they get there, I will go into their home, do all of the checking I would normally do, and along with that, light cleaning,” she said. “If they wish, I’ll get groceries and stock the refrigerator. They can come back and go straight out to enjoy the lake. That’s my goal; to save them time so they can simply enjoy being home.” A list of available services is on the 2J’s LLC Facebook page.
Janet Thorne with 2J’s LLC also provides services, including picking up groceries and bringing packages into a home.

GRIFFIN II TOWABLE
Story by JERRY HALE
Whether swinging outside the wake on a single-person tube or sharing a multiperson ride with a couple of other lake lovers, tubing is something most people have to do — at least once. 62
SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER | May 2018
And even those who consider themselves past tubing age get kicks from watching the fun that loved ones have while being pulled behind a boat. Ken Hayes, owner of Smith Mountain Wake Company at Bridgewater Plaza, regularly participates in tow sport activities, attends gear-buying events and talks with shoppers about their own preferences. “The cash register doesn’t lie,” Hayes said. “What people buy is a great indicator of what tow toys are in favor.” Hayes sells a variety of inflatables and said higher quality products make a difference. “Tubes take a beating, and the discount brands often fail and spoil a day of fun on the water,” he said. “Plus, the leading manufacturers like O’Brien, Rave, HO (Hyperlite) and Radar (Ronix) have really raised the bar on features. Grab handles are padded for comfort, softer non-chafing decking fabric has replaced abrasive canvas, and bladders are thicker for longer life. Even the convenience of the inflate/deflate valves can vary significantly.” The styles of inflatables can vary widely, too. Traditional one-person circular decked-over tubes start around $69. Smith Mountain Wake Company’s top seller is a 75-inch, three-person model that’s D-shaped to provide a sportier ride and more space for riders. One mid-priced tube (around $250) to check out is the Airhead Griffin II that features oversized knee pads and angled edges to improve control through weight shifts. On the higher end of both comfort and price are the couch-style inflatables with built-in back rests that

make staying securely perched on the deck easy for riders of all ages. There’s also O’Brien’s Baller 3-rider couch, as well as Connelly’s Fun 3. Those range in price from $250 to $600. New this year is the HO Hotseat XL, which retails for $429. It accommodates up to five riders — three in prone position with two sitting against back rests. Also, there’s the Connelly Prism, a $400 hexagonal rigid inflatable throwback to the old saucer discs. It can be towed from a hook or for spin-around, stand-up fun, the rider can hold a tow handle. Bridgewater Marina sells, as well as rents, water toys. Marina partner Ryan Waters also said he expects the trend for consumers to want bigger, more comfortable inflatables with back rests or unique handholds to continue. “We’ll sell a ton of the Connelly Fun 3 and four-place O’Brien Sombrero inflatables,” he said. Because of insurance reasons, Waters said the marina only rents tubes to their customers who also rent boats or personal watercraft. “It’s $30 per day for a two-person tube, $40 for the larger, more luxurious three-place models,” Waters said. “Either one adds lots of fun to a day on the lake.” Tubes are purchased by all types of consumers — teens and young adults looking for thrills, parents to use for towing family members, and grandparents anticipating a menagerie of visitors. “When the expected riders include parents and grandparents, the couch styles usually get the nod,” Hayes said. Hayes also emphasized the importance of a suitable 60-foot towline. “Look for the required towline tensile strength on the package you are considering and make sure you have towline that meets or exceeds that recommendation.
66
SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER | May 2018
Over time, many families upgrade to larger multi-person towables, so a few extra bucks for a stronger line than you need right now makes sense.” Hayes added that boaters should never use a water ski or wakeboard towline to tow a tube. To keep inflatables lasting as long as possible, Hayes offered the following tips: • Keep out them out of the sun to prevent them from deteriorating. • Don’t use tow tubes if they’re under-inflated. Resistance-induced stresses increase exponentially. • Choose the right tow point on the boat. Bridles should be used on boats that don’t have a purposemounted pylon, ring or towing bar, though they allow the towline to drag in the water even at speed. Most wakeboarding towers are not designed to handle the shock loads a multi-person towable can exert. • Never tow from a cleat as it can be yanked loose and snap back at riders like a missile. Tubes are sometimes tied to or anchored near a dock to serve as swimming and sunbathing mini-islands. Now there are a variety of floatables designed just for that purpose, too. Water lounge chairs for singles or pairs range from $29 to $99. HO’s Castaway Island, which retails for $329, is suitable for a group of seven to eight plus there’s room for snacks and beverages. A 6-foot by 16-foot solid foam island costs around $499 while high-floating rigid inflatables, including some with sun-shielding canopies, range from $600 to $750. Body Glove’s Party Island features built-in waterproof Bluetooth speakers. As with inflatable tubes, the more expensive islands will survive more rough housing, but even inexpensive discount store floaties can be loads of fun.

their laker years a summer series on couples who retired at smith mountain lake
COUPLE DIVE IN TO GIVING BACK Terry and Deb Broadwater traded leisure time for leadership roles around SML Interview by Jerry Hale
Photography by KAREN DILLON “I have a purpose driven life — to extend a helping hand to the marginalized. The older I get, the more driven I feel,” said Deb Broadwater. She and her husband, Terry, feel led to serve the lake community.

eb and Terry Broadwater, who live in Park Place, are both retired U.S. Army officers — he as an Armor Lt. Colonel; she as a Colonel specializing in operations research for land forces.
were more laid back.
Q: What were a few of your memorable duty stations? Terry: I had overseas assignments in Vietnam, Germany and Turkey. While stateside at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, I met and married Deb, who was there serving as a chemical officer. My last posting was to 4th U.S. Army HQ at Ft. Sheridan, just outside of Chicago. Deb: My last three Army jobs were at the Pentagon, first with Army staff and then the Secretary of Defense’s office. We moved to Smith Mountain Lake immediately after I retired.
Q: How was retirement here compared to your expectations? Deb: I soon realized I wasn’t really cut out to have lots of leisure time, so I quickly got involved on committees and boards. I had leadership roles with the [Smith Mountain Lake] Charity Home Tour, the Henry Fork Service Center and all kinds of involvement at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Plus, I served as webmaster for Terry’s developing real estate business. Terry: We first bought a lot at Contentment Island, but after discovering a fit with Bethlehem, we decided we’d be happier on the Moneta side of the lake. A yearlong search turned up our property in Park Place ... and morphed into an interest in real estate. I’ve been focusing on representing buyers ever since.
Q: How did you learn about Smith Mountain Lake? Deb: In the mid ’90s while stationed in Atlanta, I sat next to someone on an airplane who talked about Smith Mountain Lake in casual conversation. I was all ears. Living near a lake had been a dream of mine since childhood. I had even ‘played lake’ by digging a hole in the dirt and filling it with water from a bucket! A few years later, another stranger on another plane recommended Smith Mountain Lake as a place we needed to check out for retirement. Coincidence? Maybe. But both raved about the place. Terry: We looked at several other lakes and then spent a long weekend here with our kids in a rental we found online. It was a drought year, and the small boat we had trailered here got caught under the dock as the water rose. Still, we had a fantastic time and thought this area had great appeal — swimming, fishing, golf, natural beauty and surrounding mountains. Deb: I had been working 12-hour days at the Pentagon for seven years and living in the Beltway bustle. I was ready for a place to relax and meet people who
Q: What’s the bottom line on being retired at SML? Terry: You can be as busy here as you want to be. I’ve been on the board of Lake Christian Ministries, headed up Christian education at Bethehem UMC and traveled with the church’s disaster relief team. Anyone with energy to offer can get as involved in the local community as they want. Deb: There are all kinds of volunteer opportunities here. I have a purpose driven life — to extend a helping hand to the marginalized. The older I get, the more driven I feel. And being at Smith Mountain Lake has given me the chance to balance that work with the stillness, solitude and relaxation the lake provides every day. Like the water, the community’s welcome is deep and clear. You can enjoy that no matter how busy you get. I love it here. Terry: I tell prospective buyers, ‘This is truly the Jewel of the Blue Ridge ... 22,000 acres of well-kept secret. Recreation abounds — water sports, hunting, hiking are readily available. You’ll be content here and rarely feel the need to leave.’

“Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” — MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

n larger cities and municipalities, when you call 911 for a fire or medical emergency, career or paid first responders are likely to answer the call for help; however, Smith Mountain Lake is primarily served by all-volunteer fire and medical rescue personnel. Each month through August, Smith Mountain Laker magazine will profile the area’s agencies who help keep lake residents and their property safe.
Red Valley Rescue Squad Red Valley Rescue Squad members are like one big family, bound together by a love of helping others. “I like helping people and treating people,” Ryan DeForest said of why he joined the rescue squad 20 years ago and where he currently serves as captain. “It kind of gets in your blood,” added Jason Halm, the squad’s president. Before moving to the lake in 2012, Halm was a career firefighter in upstate New York. “I swore to my wife that I wasn’t going to do that anymore,” he said of being involved in fire and rescue after they moved to SML. “I lasted 23 days.” In addition to Red Valley, Halm serves on the Burnt Chimney and Smith Mountain Lake Marine volunteer fire departments, too. With nearly three dozen members, Red Valley Rescue Squad is one of the better-staffed agencies in the area, which can be a curse, as well as a blessing, DeForest said. When DeForest joined Red Valley as a volunteer 20 years ago, the squad answered roughly 200 calls a year. Today, that number has tripled. Oftentimes, these first responders will answer calls that other squads can’t, which can send them to emergencies as far as away as Callaway, Henry and Ferrum.
While the squad’s call volume has gone up, its annual allotment of funds, which comes from Franklin County, has remained the same. “Budgeting is tight because of the number of calls we run,” DeForest said. Recently, thanks to a $10,000 grant that DeForest secured, along with money from two annual chicken barbecue fundraisers — there’s one May 19 from noon to 2 p.m. at the rescue squad — and a letter campaign, Halm said they were able to purchase a Lucas device, a machine that delivers chest compressions for CPR, and an automatic stretcher, which can be used to transport larger patients. While Franklin County residents are charged for ambulance trips to the hospital, that money doesn’t go directly back to the individual rescue squads. Instead, it’s reinvested into Franklin County Public Safety, which purchases new rescue and response vehicles for the county agencies. This month, Red Valley is expecting a new ambulance at an estimated cost of $236,000. “That’s a basic model, with no bells and whistles,” Halm said. Fortunately, the new equipment will be ready for what is typically a busy season for the rescue squad, which lasts just before Memorial Day through the end of October. “We get a real uptick this time of year,” DeForest said. Because of that increase in call volume, the rescue squad is always in need of members. After completing an online application and passing a background check, new members are paired with a mentor and trained in CPR and basic first aid. Members can continue their training by taking EMT (emergency medical technician) and EVOC (emergency vehicle operations) classes,

Halm said. “There’s on-the-squad training and monthly training,” Halm said. “We’ll point you in the right direction. The sky’s the limit … it just depends on the individual.” Depending on staffing, squad members typically volunteer, at a minimum, for two 12-hour shifts a month. “We’re more flexible on being able to accommodate people and their schedules,” Halm said. Through their love of helping others, DeForest and Halm are part of a larger tight-knit family of first responders. “I’m boasting, but I’d say it’s one of the strongest squads in the county,” Halm said. “We’ve got a really good group of people.” John Smith, who is retired from a career in law enforcement, agreed. “We’re all here because we want to help people.” Red Valley Rescue Squad is on Virginia 116 near Burnt Chimney. More information about the squad can be found on Facebook.
Twenty years ago, the Red Valley Rescue Squad answered roughly 200 calls per year, captain Ryan DeForest said. Today, that number has tripled.

Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire Department Like Halm, John Zane is a member of Red Valley Rescue Squad, as well as Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire Department. He spent six months training to become a firefighter while also earning his EMT certification, in anticipation of making it into a career. “I really enjoy it, love the training and the people,” Zane said. The fire department covers an area of approximately 84 square miles and answers an average of 250 calls each year for service, which includes not only structure fires, but also vehicle crashes. “We are the busiest fire department in the county,” said department chief Lee Powell. Of its 40 members, eight are certified at the firefighter 1 level, 22 are firefighter 2 certified and 10 are support members, Powell said. In addition, 10 members have some medical training.

“Volunteers are a very important resource for Franklin County ... [I]t is important our community supports us like we support them.” — CHIEF LEE POWELL
“Currently at Burnt Chimney, any member not having at least firefighter 1 can’t enter a burning structure,” Powell said. However, “there are plenty of other tasks that are important on the fire or accident scene.” Firefighter 1 is a 160-hour training program that includes classroom study, drillfield practice and training evolutions, Powell said. The 57-hour firefighter 2 training program is designed for those who are interested in taking on a leadership role in a department. Support members help with traffic control, building and truck maintenance, fundraising and other tasks. Officers are assigned duties that help with the department’s day-to-day operations. “We run like a small business,” Powell said. “We look at it like the trucks and equipment belong to the citizens of Franklin County. We house and maintain them.” Because volunteers are always on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, new members are always needed, Powell said. “Volunteers are a very important resource for Franklin County. We save the citizens millions of tax dollars a year by doing what we do,” he said. “So it is important our community supports us like we support them and for everyone to try to get involved in their local fire department in some capacity.” Additional funding is something else that’s always in demand. Although they receive funding from Franklin County Public Safety, the department also hosts fundraisers, including an annual golf tournament and a chicken barbecue dinner. Like Red Valley, Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire Department also has secured grant funding over the years. “We have been very successful at federal grants to take the burden from the taxpayers,” Powell said. “Since 2001, we have been awarded over $275,000 in grant money given out by the federal government.” And for a fire department, equipment isn’t cheap. “The cost of our first-run engine in 2013 was $485,000, which carries most of our equipment, over $400,000 of it,” Powell said. “The trucks are on rotation and are paid for by tax dollars provided by the board of supervisors. Each year, the county buys a fire truck to replace a 20-year-old truck throughout the county.” Powell, who has been volunteering at Burnt Chimney since 1996, said being a firefighter is a dream come true. “Making a difference in someone’s worst day and

giving back to my community,” he said when asked what he enjoyed most. “Some of the greatest, unselfish people I know are in the firehouses, rescue squads, state police and sheriff’s departments in Franklin County. We are one team paid or volunteer trying to accomplish one goal.” Zane agreed. “Once you run your first good call, there’s no going back,” he said. “It’s a good feeling to help somebody. That’s what gets you hooked.” Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire Department is located on Virginia 122 North in Burnt Chimney. More information about the department can be found on Facebook. When size matters Mini-golf offers surprising life lessons By Kimberly Dalferes
T
he beloved summer job. Before the demands of kids, mortgages, car payments and 401(k) plans, there is the carefree pleasure of a summer job that provides for nothing more than a little walking around money. True summer job bliss comes from those experiences that don’t enhance your resume, your network or your trip up the corporate ladder. Rather, summer jobs are low-expectation and stress-free affairs, requiring minimal effort. Think camp counselor, lifeguard or ice cream scooper. One of my first summer jobs was working at a miniature golf course and arcade. Time spent there was not life changing, but it was kinda fun. More than anything, working at the mini-golf provided a wonderful opportunity to hone my people-watching skills: you can tell a lot by the way someone handles themselves on a mini-golf course. Back in the day we did not serve alcoholic beverages there. However, I was amazed by how many people showed up completely soused, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night

(though there were those who arrived at 10 a.m. with Bloody Mary breath). Trust me: drunkenness and swinging what equates to a long metal hammer do not mix. More than once we had to call the EMTs. And the po-po. Sometimes both. The selection of the putter provided interesting insights. Each morning I arranged the clubs across the countertop, colored handles facing the players’ side for easy access. There were guys who ALWAYS selected the biggest putter, with little concern for their height. That putter could be tip-to-top up to their armpit, and they didn’t care; they were going to use the longest club available. For these gentlemen, size most definitely mattered, regardless of how ridiculous they looked out on the course. Life lesson: try not to judge a man by the size of his putter. There were the couples who took the game much too seriously. By definition, the point was to putter, to take your time and to have fun. The couple who fought over every stroke, every hole, who took glee in the missing of par was the couple who entered singlehood by the end of the summer. Life lesson: it’s never fun to have fun at someone else’s expense. Conversely, there were those who were just a tad too amorous amongst the waterfalls and windmills. Airlines have their mile-high club; we had our sink-your-putt wall of shame. No life lesson here except get a room — always get a room. My favorite people-watching happened at the 18th hole. From my perch at the cashier stand I had a clear line of sight to No. 18. On this last hole, if you made a hole-in-one you earned a free round of mini-golf during your next visit. Here’s the thing: the green was configured in such a way as to make it damn near impossible to earn that giveaway. You would not believe how many people I observed trying to cheat their way to a freebie. Life lesson: you never know someone’s true nature until you deny them a free game of mini-golf.
