The SUMMER 2013

Students line up to greet the Prince HIS term Year 9 Haywood students were given an insight into the world of work, by enrolling as Industrial Cadets.

Chosen to take part in the programme were Charlotte Selman, Ryan Lench, Christian Bailey, Lesley Heath, Hannah Green, Edward Selman, Ryan Machin, Akash Vigneswaran, Aaron Tinsley, Charlotte Williams, Imogen Allanson, and Olivia Stanyer.

It took place over eight weeks with the cadets visiting a range of businesses whilst working on the project.

Local industry and businesses signed up to support the industrial cadet scheme which is supported and promoted by HRH The Prince of Wales.

The programme came to an end in March

when the cadets graduated in an evening ceremony at Port Vale Football Club.

Following the graduation, HRH Prince of Wales visited The Co-operative Academy of Stoke-on-Trent on the 16th May, where he met students from the Industrial Cadets programme.

Prince Charles – who also visited Middleport Pottery and the Wedgwood Institute in Burslem Town Centre – spent time

talking to our students, to find out about the scheme.

Charlotte Selman said: “It was a great honour. I thought that HRH Prince Charles was a very down to earth man.”

Hannah Green said: “Meeting Prince Charles was an experience I will cherish, knowing that he had given his time to show an interest in the project and to ask us in person how we felt.”

Kenyan partners benefit from Africa visit DURING April this year, 11 students and three members of staff made the journey to Kenya to visit Muhuri Muchiri Boys’ High School, our partner school.

The school is situated roughly an hour away from Nairobi.

This was the second visit Haywood students and staff have made, but each time they go, the students in Kenya benefit.

Owl design a hoot with book cover judge panel YEAR 10 students entered a competition to design a book cover for the North Staffordshire Royal Society for the Protection of Birds group.

The theme was wildlife and Jasmin Nahar’s design was chosen as the winner.

Her design featured a beautiful owl, alongside insects, flowers and a mouse.

Jasmin’s winning design will be used for the cover of a book containing poems by Staffordshire people.

The design is currently being printed onto hundreds of books which are due to be launched in September, in order to raise funds for the charity.

Jasmin will be collecting her prize and a copy of the book in September.

Summer ‘13 concert wows the audience THE Summer concert took place on July 3 and parents, carers and students were entertained by a range of delightful performances from Music, Drama and Dance.

It came now Year 11 students have concluded their exams and are waiting, with confidence we think, for their GCSE and BTEC results at the end of August.

They had two special days in school, post exams. First, they attended a special Year 11 leavers assembly, where with a few jokes and surprises, staff helped them to celebrate their time at Haywood.

Then they attended the school Leavers’ Ball, held on a beautiful summer evening, at Keele Hall.

Congratulations to a super year group.

LESSONS FROM AUSCHWITZ: Mr Barlow and Miss Montgomery took part in a teachers’ conference based around issues arising from the Holocaust. They visited the Auschwitz concentration camp, pictured, in Poland and attended weekend teaching conferences in Manchester to reflect on their experiences.

Living history experiences from ‘hands-on’ visits T HE Humanities Department is ending the academic year with a bang with a range of exciting activities that will enhance some of the excellent learning that has taken place.

Year 7 and 8 had an exciting day at Warwick Castle. The students built on the work they have done looking at life in Medieval England by visiting both the impressive castle at Warwick and the fantastically preserved dungeons.

The day gave Year 7 and 8 students real hands-on experience of life in Medieval England, provided lots of fun and rewarded students for all their hard work in History.

The final week of term sees the Humanities’ team going on a European adventure!

Students from Year 9, 10 and 11 will spend several nights in Belgium on a World War One Battlefields Tour.

The visit will be jam packed, with students taking in the Museums, Battlefields, Cemeteries and the famous town of Ypres where they will spend an afternoon and evening eating out, shopping and attending the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.

The visit is certain to be a valuable experience for all involved.

Gifts make a difference for new Kenyan friends Continued from page one On this visit our young leaders visited many schools and led sporting activities and shared their experiences of school.

They left gifts and gave football kits, computers, a projector and stationery to Ruai Boys school before leaving similar gifts with Muhuri Muchiri.

This school is quite well off for sports equipment, thanks to

Haywood staff and students. Their teams play in Port Vale and Stoke City football strips (donated by the clubs).

Our students enjoyed experiences including wildlife, dance, meeting children who had never seen white people before, bartering in the markets, a crocodile sanctuary and a very poignant visit to a children’s home.

full of clothes, toiletries and stationery for the children and saw, first hand, the conditions in which the children live.

The team returned home with the message for our students, to value what they have and treasure their education. It was an experience they will never forget.

HAYWOOD Engineering College cemented its status as one of the UK’s most innovative academies when it sent a hi-tech message out to hundreds of parents and carers at feeder primary schools.

Using a new app developed for smartphones and tablets, readers of a new publication called Primary Stars can point their phones at a photo of Head Teacher Carl Ward and watch a specially-recorded video.

CLASS 7EN have been working with the ceramic artist Lawrence Epps to create porcelain slabs which will be displayed at the British Ceramics Biennial in September 2013.

Students thought of a belief and used a series of fonts to stamp them on to large scale slabs of porcelain clay.

They also produced a series of drawings which have been turned into transfers to fire onto their glazed slabs.

The finished work will be on display for all to see during the festival which will run for six weeks from 28th September to 10th November, 2013.

The festival will present work from the UK’s leading contemporary ceramic artists in a series of new exhibitions and special events across the city.

On the record STUDENTS who designed the memorial gates for the new Burslem Community Fire Station will go down in history!

Their names and a photo of the gates appear in a new book on the history of the Mother Town, “Burslem Through Time”.

Eileen retires after 31 years’ school service

Hopes are high for art results after skilful showcase TUDENTS from Year 11 showcased impressive examples of their artwork as final pieces for their Art and Design GCSE. Colourful realist and abstract paintings were submitted alongside innovative ceramic pieces.

Head of Art, Miss Linda Weston, said: “The standard of work produced was outstanding and all the students should be very proud of the results of their hard work. With such a variety of themes and real talent on show we have very high expectations for this group when the results are announced.”

MRS Eileen Lewis, pictured above, retires from Haywood this summer after 31 years at the school.

Eileen has been a tremendous supporter of the school, working here as Head Cleaner, Learning Support Practitioner and of late in the Inclusion Department.

We have relied upon her for so many things and now it is time for her family to do the same!

She has four grandchildren and four great grandchildren and will be spending some time with them as well as her husband.

But we will be seeing her again in the near future as a mentor and exam invigilator. We wish her a happy retirement in all that she does. ● Mr Cartlidge, Miss Chevin and Mr Dudley are all leaving Haywood to take posts in other schools – we wish them well.

Engineering a great future ENGINEERING students attended Stoke on Trent College this term to extend their range, with work in the Motor Vehicle Department, where students completed general maintenance.

This term, the Engineering Committee has attended the Seighford Goblin Car Event, helping primary school teams on the day with the smooth running of the races and to assist with any break downs.

They have also supported staff and students during the Year 7 visit to Ironbridge.

London trip reward for top IT champions STUDENTS have been praised for their efforts in the BT Digital Champions Programme.

Organisers were hugely impressed by the leadership shown by the staff running the programme at Haywood and the efforts of students to share their skills to help others.

It attracted 180 schools nationally and Haywood students were recognised for their commitment, helping family members to overcome digital exclusion.

The programme was overseen by Assistant Head Teacher Mrs Paula Fergusson, who said: “It’s been a wonderful opportunity for students to support the community and their families with ICT skills. The students really enjoyed and valued this project.”

The school was in the top five leader board finalists and as a result received tickets for an assembly rock concert at Wembley.

On July 10, students in year 9 and 10 based on their commitment to progress throughout this academic year went to London for the day to see the concert as a special reward. Miss Hughes said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students and they were all very excited about our trip to London.”

COME ON YOU BLUES: Form 7DJ outside the National Football Museum in Manchester.

Soccer legends visit helps students up literacy league 7DJ enjoyed a visit to the National Football Museum in Manchester during May, as part of the National Literacy Trust’s ‘Premier League Reading Stars’ programme.

They explored the museum during the morning, seeing exhibits including a player’s medal from just-retired Alex Ferguson, shirts from throughout the history of the game and football equipment from around the world.

The braver students took part in a virtual penalty shoot-out and provided a ‘Match of the Day’ commentary.

During the afternoon, students listened to Paul Cookson’s hilarious poetry and wrote a poem with him.

The students had a great day and the programme continued until the end of term, including a visit from, local author Sharon Sant.

Getting a buzz out of spelling ON Tuesday June 25, children from New Ford, Smallthorne, Moorpark, Sneyd Green, Mill Hill and Burnwood, met in the main hall at Haywood to compete against each other in a ‘Spelling Bee’ competition.

The American-style quiz consisted of the children taking part in spelling games and a ‘knock out’ round before the grand finale.

A child from each school was in the final and the winning school, Smallthorne Primary, was presented with a trophy. The event was organised by Mrs O’Dea, Head of English.

BRUSHING UP ON ART SKILLS...

Art works reflect ‘our city’ theme THE school has been asked to participate in this year’s Creative Minds Festival in conjunction with Creative Arts North Staffs (CANS).

Over 200 students from Key Stage Three have been working with graffiti artist-in-residence Chris Guest in order to create painted canvases and art

magnets. The theme was Stoke-on-Trent and the artwork was displayed at the Regent Theatre from Tuesday 2nd July through to Friday 5th July.

Lunch will be from 1:30 – 2:00 pm with an earlier start of 12:55 on a Tuesday, when the school will close for students at 2:25pm. School closes at 3pm on the other four days.

Teams congratulated for fantastic sporting efforts

AYWOOD Engineering College and Holden Lane Sports College’s Y9 footballers reached the League semi-final this year and there was a fantastic effort from both teams.

Haywood were put under pressure from the start but defended well. All Haywood students were a credit to the school, although Haywood lost in the semi-final 4-1. Well done to the year 9 team. Man of the match went to Drew Miller.

Year 11 Champions Haywood and Birches Head met in the Final of the Stoke North Football Championships played at Biddulph Town.

Haywood took the lead after a corner by Aaron Turnock was met

by Ashley Smith who neatly slotted it home from close range.

The lead lasted 30 seconds as Birches equalised straight away.

Haywood was then awarded a penalty but Ashley Smith failed to convert the chance.

Birches then took the lead just before half time with a stunning strike from 30 yards. Haywood dominated the second half and created chances throughout.

CREDIT TO THE SCHOOL...

Year 11 champion footballers, and, inset, the Year 9 soccer players who just missed out in a crunch semi final.

Josh Worthington stepped up for another penalty but the keeper saved it and the score remained 2-1.

Ashley Smith broke free after 60 minutes and struck a great left footed shot past the keeper to equalise and Haywood were back in the game. The match looked destined for extra time when Birches were awarded a penalty with 2 minutes to play. However they failed to convert their penalty

Activity week experience TWELVE Year 10 students enjoyed a week at Whitemoor Lakes, Lichfield as a part of their work experience.

During the week students took part in a variety of activities, including archery, team building, high ropes and abseiling!

The students also had the opportunity to develop their work skills through mock job interviews and completing the ‘British Safety Council Award in Workplace Hazard Awareness’.

All of the students did exceptionally well – well done!

Then Aaron Turnock, Chris Nellis and Ashley Smith scored which left Josh Worthington to score the winner and ensure Haywood were crowned Champions of the North!

KS3 Cricket Team Well done to the lads who won the City Indoor Cricket Competition. Bilaal Zaroob, captain, was a key member of the

side. He scored the most runs to help Haywood win the competition.

Sky Living for Sport ambassador visits Haywood Daniel Caines (Great Britain 400 metres athlete) gave an inspirational talk to Haywood KS3 students about his career highs and lows, challenges he has overcome in his career and the importance of a positive outlook on life.

Athletes in the medals at Games THIS term, Haywood students competed in the Stoke-on-Trent Athletics Competition at Northwood Stadium.

The team performed exceptionally well with the following outstanding performances: Tom Mangan: 1st Hurdles Nathan Hall: 1st High Jump Connor Small: 2nd 800m Connor Scott: 1st javelin Annie Mae Potts: 2nd Shot Putt Brandon Gee: 2nd Shot Putt Dan Evans: 1st High Jump

As a whole, Team Haywood Y7 came 8th out of 14 teams and Y8 came 4th out of 14 teams.

Well done to all concerned.

A number of the team then went on to compete for Stoke in the U13/U14 County Athletics Championships in Tamworth.

Connor Scott won the javelin, Annie Mae Potts came 6th in the Shot and Tom Mangan came 3rd in the hurdles.

Tom and Connor have now been selected to represent Staffordshire.

Primary school pupils scoop Haywood’s Got Talent title SIXTEEN singing and dance acts battled it out for the Haywood’s Got Talent title during a community fun day at the school.

BBC Radio Stoke presenter Perry Spiller led the judging panel of teachers, governors and last year’s winner Max Corden. Henry Kisala and Michael Tishuma from Burnwood Primary were the overall winners after wowing the audience with their dance act.

PE teacher Miss Sherwin, one of the judges said: “The standard of all the performances was amazingly high and everyone was a winner for taking part.”
