Alltech Secures USDA Grant to Build First U.S. Biofertilizer Plant Alltech, a global leader in agriculture, has received a $2.34 million grant from the USDA’s Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP) to expand Alltech Crop Science’s biological fertilizer production. The funding will help build a new 15,000-square-foot, $4.6 million facility at Alltech’s headquarters in Nicholasville, which will be its first U.S. plant dedicated solely to crop science.

Once operational, the plant is expected to produce over 66,000 gallons of biological fertilizers per shift each month and create six full-time jobs. Made with beneficial microorganisms, biofertilizers improve soil fertility, stimulate root growth, enhance nutrient uptake, and support a healthier soil microbiome. The company notes it offers farmers an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers, reducing reliance on synthetic inputs.

Modeled on existing production sites in Brazil and Spain, the new facility will manufacture more than 30 products designed to boost soil and crop health while cutting chemical use.

Launched in 2022, the USDA’s $500 million FPEP initiative addresses supply chain disruptions and rising fertilizer prices by increasing domestic production of fertilizers and nutrient alternatives. Alltech’s project was selected for its innovative approach to soil and crop health.

“This USDA grant is a major step forward for farmers seeking natural, science-based solutions,” said Steve Borst, vice president of Alltech Crop Science. “By expanding our production capabilities here in Kentucky, we are investing in our local economy, providing farmers with high-quality biological solutions that improve soil and crops and contributing to a more resilient agricultural system.”

Beyond helping U.S. farmers reduce dependence on imported fertilizers, the new facility will enable Alltech Crop Science to supply its natural agronomic technologies both domestically and abroad.

Alltech’s grant application was supported

BizBriefs Buffalo Trace, Meridian Biotech Team to Turn Stillage into High-Value Alternative Proteins Meridian Biotech, a Lexington-based industrial biotechnology company, has teamed up with Buffalo Trace Distillery to turn the distillery’s stillage — a natural byproduct of the distillation process, also known as spent grains — into multifunctional alternative proteins. The $40 million investment will fund a new conversion facility in Franklin County, creating up to 35 jobs and positioning Kentucky as a hub for sustainable food innovation.

Using a proprietary process, Meridian will pipe stillage directly from Buffalo Trace to its Frankfort site. Once processed, the proteins can be used in aquaculture, pet food and organic fertilizers, offering a new revenue stream for the spirits industry while reducing waste.

“By reimagining distillery stillage as a resource rather than a byproduct, we’re pioneering new pathways in biotechnology,” said Brandon Corace, president of Meridian Biotech. “Like Buffalo Trace, we are committed to making a long-term,

positive economic impact on the community. We believe our technology will play a pivotal role in enhancing Buffalo Trace’s commitment to innovation, as well as setting a new standard for the spirits industry.

Gov. Andy Beshear welcomed the project, noting that it delivers “high-quality jobs and strengthens our economic future” while opening “exciting new pathways for sustainability within Kentucky’s iconic bourbon industry.”

Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley added that the partnership “extends our craft by transforming stillage into something with extended value and purpose.”

Meridian was one of five companies selected to present at the 2021 Distillers Grains Reverse Pitch Competition, a statesponsored challenge to find sustainable uses for distilling byproducts. Franklin County Judge Executive Michael Mueller and Frankfort Mayor Layne Wilkerson both praised the move as a sign of the region’s growing biotech appeal.

Construction on the new facility is slated to begin later this year.

Brothers Wright Distilling Co. acquires Alltech's Pikeville Distillery Brothers Wright Distilling Co. has acquired Dueling Barrels Brewery & Distillery, Pearse’s Place restaurant, welcome center and tasting room in downtown Pikeville, Kentucky, from Alltech’s Lyons Brewing & Distilling Co. The deal brings Brothers Wright’s operations into a more than 30,000-square-foot facility that has driven Pikeville’s recent economic revitalization since Alltech opened the combination distillery and brewery in 2018.

Founded by brothers Shannon and Kendall Wright on a reclaimed 1,200-acre former coal mine, Brothers Wright is known for aging its Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey in a century-old mine. Under the acquisition, the company will centralize primary spirits production in Pikeville, using the facility's existing three copper pot stills, 19 stainless-steel fermenters, two cypress fermenters and beer-brewing equipment, which is capable of producing 40,000 barrels annually. A 14-inch Vendome column still is planned to boost capacity for both in-house and contract distilling.

“This acquisition represents more than just an expansion of our operations — it’s a deepening of our investment in Pikeville, Pike County, and the future of Eastern Kentucky,” said Shannon Wright.

Dueling Barrels was launched by Alltech founders Pearse Lyons and Deirdre Lyons as Eastern Kentucky’s first combined beer, bourbon, and moonshine operation. “Dueling Barrels Brewery & Distillery reflects two of our family’s greatest passions — craft brewing and distilling, as well as community impact through entrepreneurship,” said Mark Lyons, CEO of Lyons Brewing & Distilling. He added that his family is “honored to see our distillery become the Wright Brothers’ new home.”

Pearse’s Place, a 150-seat restaurant, will remain open through the transition, with all current staff retained. Brothers Wright plans to relocate the restaurant to street level to improve accessibility and visibility, add a small stage for local music, expand the kitchen and refresh the food and beverage program. The original upstairs space will be converted into a rentable event venue.

Meanwhile, Brothers Wright’s site in the Pike Co. community of Aflex is under development for a 12,000-square-foot expansion that will include a barrel-filling line, packaging line, coal mining museum, restaurant and live music venue, as well as tours of the brand’s underground barrelaging mine.

The acquisition adds to Pikeville’s growing profile in Kentucky’s spirits industry, and Brothers Wright says it will work closely with the local community to drive job creation, tourism, and cultural preservation. BL

CraveWorthy Fresh Meals On-Demand The Nori Project partners with FoodChain for Lexington launch of vending machine stocked with nutritious meals

ending machine food options typically consist of chips, crackers, sodas, or candy. A modern, health-oriented version coming to Lexington later this year is designed to bring on-demand healthy, locally sourced and culturally relevant prepared entrees to customers.

The Nori Project is the brainchild of Louisville-based CEO Anora Morton.

Morton grew up in Louisville’s Shawnee neighborhood, which she characterizes as a food desert, meaning there’s little access to fresh, healthy produce without traveling to other areas. She got the idea for the healthy vending machines in October 2022 and incorporated her new business the following January to bring healthier options to underserved areas.

Each “Nori machine” holds a rotating menu of fully cooked entrees made from whole foods. Customers simply select their meal, pay by a credit, debit or EBT card, and the machine dispenses a fresh, refrigerated tray.

By year’s end, Nori’s first outdoor unit and its first in Lexington will be installed on West Sixth Street outside FoodChain.

There, meals will be prepared and stocked

by FoodChain staff using ingredients sourced from their network of more than 50 Kentucky farmers. “We want people to go to a Nori machine that maybe aren’t the healthiest eaters but maybe recognize something familiar that they’re willing to try to get on the healthy eating path,” Morton said.

Already, two indoor machines are operating in Louisville — at the Shawnee Library and at Story Louisville in the NuLu neighborhood. Meals from the machine at Shawnee Library are subsidized and cost about $4. At the Story location, which is not subsidized, the same meal may be priced around $10. “These are all chef-crafted, healthy meals made with whole foods,” Morton said. “It’s all very intentional.”

Menu items often rotate. In July, for example, Louisville’s menu featured a healthy spin on soul food. Future offerings, including a Tex-Mex bowl, are in development, along with dishes inspired

by Morton’s travels in Japan. Morton aims to keep prices below $12 per meal in high-traffic zones and extend placement locations beyond food deserts and into high-traffic areas like downtowns, parks, and near bus stops.

Hughes noted that food deserts aren’t just about a lack of grocery stores but reflect systemic inequities, including disinvestment, transportation barriers, and limited economic mobility. “We’ve seen firsthand how this lack of access affects the health, dignity, and food autonomy of our neighbors,” she said.

USDA data show more than 25,000 Fayette County residents live in lowincome, low-access areas, making reliable healthy options scarce.

With FoodChain hosting Nori’s first outdoor machine, sales data and customer trends will guide future placements.

Morton hopes to expand further into urban neighborhoods in Lexington and Louisville, then into rural food-insecure regions like Appalachia and larger cities like Cincinnati and Indianapolis.

FoodChain’s mission is to make fresh, nutritious food accessible to everyone.

Youth waiting at the bus stop outside can eventually use the machine to grab a healthy breakfast, and their feedback will shape future menus. Hughes envisions additional machines stocked by other local food businesses. “We don’t believe food deserts should exist in a city like Lexington, and we’re committed to eliminating them through year-round, reliable, and inclusive food access strategies that center on Kentucky farmers and the voices of the communities we serve,” she said.

QuickBites Campus-Area Shop to Offer Yemeni Coffee and Treats

or one Lexington family, coffee is both a pick‑me‑up and “culture in a cup,” as they bring Yemeni coffee and treats to a new shop this fall.

Hera Qureshi, her sister Aqsa Qureshi, brother Humza Qureshi and sister‑in‑law Ghania Moeen plan to open Shibam Cof‑ fee in October at 535 S. Upper St., in the CenterCourt space near the University of Kentucky campus.

“My family and I have been in Lexing‑ ton for more than 35 years,” Hera Qureshi said.

“We were born, raised, and educated here, and our professional backgrounds are in medicine: my brother and I are anesthesiologists, my sister is a PA, and my sister‑in‑law just finished med school.”

The four had long talked about creating a “third space” where people could gather for community and coffee, even late into the evening. Hera said Yemeni coffee houses have traditionally offered this kind of setting, providing an alternative to the typical bar scene.

“Yemeni coffee is one of the oldest cof‑ fee traditions in the world,” Hera said. “Not many people know that Yemen was the first country to cultivate and trade coffee com‑ mercially, dating back to the 15th century when beans were grown on mountains and shipped from the port of Mocha. That’s where the word mocha comes from.”

Beyond its history, Yemeni coffee stands out for its origin, cultivation, and flavor. The beans are grown at high altitudes, watered only by rainfall, and dried by the sun “in the cherry” on small, family-run farms. Hera said this process gives the coffee “complex, fruity, wine‑like flavor profiles.”

Shibam Coffee will serve a range of drinks, including coffees, lattes, refreshers and matcha. Standouts include a pistachio latte, Spanish latte, mango matcha, and Ye‑ men’s famous spiced milk tea, Adeni chai, made with black tea, whole milk, and spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves.

Food options will include pastries, savory snacks, Yemeni-inspired desserts, milk cakes, and other locally baked treats.

Hera said the Dearborn, Mich.-based Shibam Coffee franchise is known for its beautiful, relaxing spaces. Once complete, the Lexington shop will seat around 50, with cozy couches and chairs throughout.

“We’re excited to bring this tradition to Lexington and our community,” Hera said.

In other food and beverage news: Mixed-use development The Commons is in its third and final phase. In ad‑ dition to a large common-area plaza, per‑ formance venue, luxury short-term rentals, retail shops, walking trails, a pond, and RD1 Distillery, the 42-acre development will include Water Tower Cafe, opening later this summer. Located near a walk‑ ing trail and under a second water tower, the cafe will offer grab-and-go options and patio seating, said Amy Mellinger, partner at Block & Lot Real Estate. An ice cream concept is also under construction, with more food concepts expected to be

Beyond power and Wi‑Fi, the trailers can be fitted with motion‑activated floodlights and optional surveillance cameras. A backup generator ensures continuous service during overcast conditions or at night.

Outside of disaster relief, these solar trailers serve as an eco-friendly alternative to fuel-powered light towers and mobile command centers. Golden Lab recommends the solar-powered trailer for stadiums and large outdoor events where lighting increases safety and connectivity is needed by event organizers and attendees alike. Stage Set for Gatton Park Grand Opening From national touring acts to community programming, art installations and greenspace, here’s what to expect from Lexington’s ‘central park’

n Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi,” she sings: “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” Now, thanks to years of planning and fundraising, Lexington is reversing that trend by transforming a former parking lot into a community greenspace.

On August 23, city officials and community members will officially open the park, featur‑ ing family‑friendly activities, a Kentucky artist showcase and pop‑up dance perfor‑ mances. The christening of CommonSpirit Health Stage — a 4,500‑seat amphitheater — will include opening‑day performances by Tee Dee Young, Joslyn & The Sweet Compres‑ sion, Vinyl Richie, DeBraun Thomas, Devine Carama and Mama Said String Band.

Brian Sipe, general manager for Oak View Group (OVG), which also manages shows locally at Rupp Arena and the Lexington Opera House, has also booked several national headliners, including the Beach Boys (Sep‑ tember 17) and Kansas, Jefferson Starship and Molly Hatchet (October 9), with more to be announced.

“Our market has been missing a space like this,” Sipe said of Gatton Park’s entertainment capabilities. “I know Daren Turner is open‑ ing a venue that’s going to fit around 2,000 [people] at The Commons, but other than that I think we’ll be the next step up. We’re not tak‑ ing pieces of the pie — we’re growing it.”

Sipe said OVG plans to host roughly 20 national acts annually on Gatton Park’s stage, with shows being scheduled between midApril and mid-October. Local programming will include live music, nonprofit collabora‑ tions, group yoga, running clubs and educa‑ tional activities along Town Branch Creek, which runs through the 10-acre park.

“This year we want to give a little flavor of the types of programming people will see once we have a full season to work with in 2026,” said Allison Lankford, executive director for the Gatton Park on the Town Branch fund.

“We’re trying to create a space for opportuni‑ ty, because that’s what Lexingtonians wanted.

They’re excited about those national shows Brian and OVG will be producing, and they also want spaces for our local nonprofits and creatives to be able to shine.”

Beyond the amphitheater, Gatton Park of‑ fers a splash area built with natural stones and plants to emulate a creek, a four-story play‑ ground topped by a 27-foot slide resembling a grist mill, a butterfly garden, a dog park, and a quarter-mile loop trail. But the centerpiece is Town Branch creek itself, an essential piece of life in the city’s early days that has been resurfaced and rejuvenated.

“We’ve restored the stream bed by taking out all the invasive species and replacing them with appropriate flora and really trying to bring the habitat back to what it once was,” Lankford said.

Four art installations have also been installed, including an arched metal entry dubbed “Petal-Drop-Flutter” by sculp‑ tor Blessing Hancock; StudioKCA’s “First Impressions,” a massive sculpture comprised of 117 interlocking precast concrete panels; “Watermark” by Amanda Matthews, which recognizes the park’s donors; and a mural across a repurposed R.J. Corman boxcar that will house the park’s food vending operations.

A fifth piece of public artwork is slated to be added in 2026.

Lankford said the park has also partnered with national event catering and concessions company DLS to facilitate on-site food and

beverage sales. “They’re known for bringing in local providers and food trucks to assist in operations,” she said.

It’s been a lot of moving pieces and a long time coming for the once beleaguered and delayed project that initially stemmed from a master plan for downtown created in 2009.

Although it was never formally adopted by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Govern‑ ment, the city did launch a design competition for the area in 2013 that included trail con‑ nectivity and public space improvement as its pillars, two things that are also rooted in the park’s infrastructure.

After federal funding proved elusive, the Blue Grass Community Foundation launched the Town Branch Fund in 2018, bringing

sh area, and a playground centered around a four‑story, grist mill–inspired structure.

together local civic leaders and philanthropists to pursue public–private financing. Since then, the fund has raised over $55 million. Fully 98 percent of that total came from private sources — major gifts from companies like Alltech, events such as Picnic With The Pops, and philanthropists including Bill Gatton, whose $14.5 million donation in May 2024 secured the park’s name. The remaining 2 percent primarily came from a $1 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service in September 2023. “[The Forest Service] gave us a couple grants to improve the stormwater infrastructure around the park since almost all the downtown core’s stormwater runs

through Town Branch Creek and the park,” Lankford said. “But by and large it’s been private philanthropy that’s pushed the park forward.”

With the Town Branch Trail fully open since 2022, Lankford calls Gatton Park’s debut the missing link that finally connects downtown Lexington to the burgeoning Distillery District. “It’s incredible that philanthropic dollars are bringing this to Lexington. It’s truly built by the people, for the people” Lankford said. “Central parks in the core of downtown have a special place in society. If we’ve learned anything in the years since COVID, it’s that places like this are loved and critical to our communities.” BL

Making Sense of Recent Property Tax Issues

ver the past five years, home prices have risen sharply due to an unprecedented national housing shortage, triggering increases in property taxes and insurance premiums. Tax rate increases were levied by Fayette County Public Schools in 2018 and 2022, followed by an increase from LFUCG in 2023. Homeowners received unexpected second or supplemental property tax bills — one in September, followed by another in January — two years in a row, triggering huge swings in mortgage payments and escrow balances, and this year’s bill will include the new parks tax. It’s been one thing after another, and with the school district’s recent kerfuffle over a proposed bump in the occupational tax, the community’s collective patience seems to be thinning. And to be honest, the public deserves an explanation for some of these changes.

Kentucky’s property tax system is complicated, and in my experience, you don’t have to wade very far into the weeds before eyes start to glaze over. But with so much happening and so much at stake, it’s a good time for a refresher on what homeowners should know and what to be watching.

Let’s start with a little political theater focusing on how our property tax process came to be and why it’s often referred to as “House Bill 44.”

Prior to a 1992 constitutional amendment, Kentucky’s lieutenant governor was elected independently of the governor. The two could be from different political parties, and the lieutenant governor had more substantial constitutional duties including the power to act as governor when the elected governor was out of state. Can you imagine the possible shenanigans if this were still the case?

In December 1978, Gov. Julian Carroll, who had been traveling extensively as chairman of the National Governors Association, was presiding over a training session for new governors in Georgia. While he was gone, Lt. Gov. Thelma Stovall — a political firebrand with her own ambitious plans to run for governor the following year — seized the moment, called the Kentucky General Assembly into a surprise special session, and passed a series of tax-cutting measures, the most significant being a limit on how much property tax revenues can increase in any single year.

The mechanism for managing that cap guides how public schools and other taxing districts set their tax rates to this day. In case you’re wondering, Gov. Carroll was supposedly blindsided and furious, but I’m mildly skeptical. Either way, House Bill 44 was born.

What Does HB44 Actually Do? In short, HB44 limits how much tax revenue from existing property can increase from one year to the next — specifically, no more than 4% — without giving voters a say.

It’s worth emphasizing this is not a 4% limit on your individual tax bill increase. Unfortunately, there is no cap on how much your own bill can go up. The 4% rule applies to the overall revenue increase a taxing district (like the school board, or LFUCG) can take in from existing property — new construction and major improvements are excluded from the limit.

The 4% increase in revenues may result from an increase in property values through the PVA’s reassessment process, an increase in the tax rate, or a combination of the two.

In very simple terms, if property values shoot up as they have done recently and have done in the past during unusual economic

conditions, the tax rate adjusts downward to help prevent large windfalls in revenue at the taxpayer’s expense.

It is worth noting that half of LFUCG’s general services rate is merely a pass-through to the Lexington Public Library. Very little of LFUCG’s general fund is serviced by property taxes compared to the school district’s budget.

The state’s and city’s rates are more representative of a “compensating tax rate.” Notice they have either decreased or remained flat, whereas the school’s rate has increased 24% over the past 12 years.

But remember, property values have also increased substantially over that same period — by more than 65%, resulting in a doubling (100% increase) in the schools’ revenue from property taxes since 2012. That’s an average annual rate increase of about 6%.

This is possible because rate increases are not just one-time hits; they have a compounding effect by becoming the base upon which subsequent years’ 4% increases will be expected and taken.

So How Do Rates Actually Get Set? Every year between late April and early May, PVAs publish the updated assessment rolls and send notices to property owners.

If property owners disagree with the new value, that’s the time to protest with appeals and board hearings concluding in late June.

In July, the State Department of Revenue certifies the PVA’s tax roll and sends it to the Department of Local Government and the Department of Education. Those agencies then provide a menu of tax rate options for each taxing district, typically including: • The compensating rate (keeps total revenue flat year-over-year) • The 4% rate (the maximum increase allowed without a referendum) When property values are rising as quickly as they have in recent years, tax rates are generally expected to go down. But if a taxing entity chooses to increase the rate, it must allow time for public notice and discussion. And if they set a rate that generates more than a 4% increase, then a petition can be circulated to place the question on the ballot at the next election.

The constraints of HB44 have played out in a few notable scenarios recently. In 2018, the Fayette County School Board voted for an

additional “nickel tax” for security, on top of the regular property tax rate, which resulted in an increase in revenues above 4%. A group of citizens organized and circulated a petition, coming close to but falling short of the required number of signatures to get the rate hike on the ballot. A petition was also circulated in 2022 when the schools again raised rates above the 4% threshold, but it failed too.

By 2022, we were deep into a hot real estate market that had seemingly sprung up during the pandemic without warning. Median home sale prices in Lexington had jumped from an annual growth rate of around 5% to a shocking 10-12%, producing large enough increases in property values to easily provide the school district its 4% increase in revenues over 2021 levels. In fact, the 8% growth in the county tax roll in 2022 would not only have guaranteed the schools their 4%, but would have resulted in an overall tax rate lower than the previous year’s.

Since properties are reassessed once every four years and only one-fourth are reassessed in any given year, 75% of property owners would have received a tax cut in 2022. The timing of the school’s 3% rate hike, combined with an 8% spike in the tax roll, resulted in an 11.3% increase in the school’s property tax revenue — nearly triple the intent of HB44.

The Second Tax Bill and Its Unintended Consequences The far more significant fallout from that rate increase by the schools — and, coincidentally, LFUCG’s 2023 increase for urban services — wouldn’t be felt until more than a year later. It was decided by the various agencies involved to mail the first bill at the regular time in late September, but only include the portion of the property taxes not subject to a petition, leaving the portion subject to recall to be collected through a second bill to be sent months later. In fairness, nobody could reasonably have been expected to foresee the problems a second bill would cause.

Most homeowners don’t pay property tax bills directly; their mortgage companies pay them out of escrow. And a surprising number of mortgage companies — with all kinds of automations in place — either had no idea what to do with these second tax bills, or their systems simply mishandled them. Thousands of bills became delinquent and reverted to the county clerk’s office to be sold as liens to

third-party investors, as hundreds are each year. However, the confusion surrounding these bills, most of which were for less than $50 in face value before interest and fees, was so significant that the bills were withdrawn from the lien sale until additional efforts could be made to collect from the property owners and mortgage companies.

But it gets worse. Of the secondary tax bills that were paid on time by mortgage companies, untold hundreds, or perhaps thousands, were misinterpreted, resulting in wild and poorly explained fluctuations in mortgage payments. The most common scenario goes something like this: the second, much smaller tax bills were misinterpreted as the properties’ new annual tax assessments. Excess escrow balances were refunded to homeowners, and monthly mortgage payments were recalculated to reflect much smaller expected tax bills, sometimes just $30 or $40.

Then, almost a year later, the real tax bills arrived, only to find escrow accounts thousands of dollars short. Monthly mortgage payments were once again recalculated, sometimes doubled, to quickly replenish the funds in escrow.

Most of us would be profoundly impacted by a sudden doubling of our mortgage payment. The only consolation is that monthly payments will likely be recalculated back to a more normal level with the next cycle of tax bills. I continue to hear from property owners who either have no idea what caused the disruption, or worse, are given the wrong explanation that it was due to increased assessments or insurance premiums. But the bottom line is this: an unintended and unforeseen side effect of these additional bills caused real pain for taxpayers, some of whom were, and some still are, at serious risk of defaulting on their mortgages.

Looking Ahead Regardless of where we stand on future tax rate hikes, let’s at least agree to stay far enough ahead of these proposals to preserve every option for getting the entire tax liability included on the first — and only — tax bill.

What little revenue it extracts is simply not worth the havoc it can wreak. So please have your antenna up in August — property tax rate setting season. Ask the usual questions like is the increase necessary? But also ask, will this increase result in a second bill, and is that necessary? BL

Yajaira Aich West PNC Bank Client & Community Relations Director on volunteer work, Lexington’s 250th celebration, and how businesses can positively impact the community

or nearly 20 years, Yajaira Aich West has been with PNC Bank, where she currently serves as Vice President, Client & Community Relations Director. Throughout her career, she has not only engaged with the community through her role at the bank but also supported Lexington through her service on various nonprofit boards and organizations.

She is also a member of the 250Lex Commission, which was created to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Lexington’s founding.

As a 250Lex ambassador for August — alongside Betsy Dexter, Jordan Parker, and Alan Stein — West will help spotlight the city’s business community, including participating in Commerce Lexington’s “Salute to Small Business” event and highlighting legacy businesses through social media.

“Contributing to this celebration has reminded me of the integral ways in which businesses have helped shape Lexington and contributed to its vibrancy,” she said.

We spoke with West about why volunteering and supporting nonprofit organizations like 250Lex is important, and how other business leaders can also make a meaningful impact.

What are some of the community organizations that you are involved in? I am fortunate to serve on the boards of six nonprofits, some of which directly benefit our Lexington community and others that provide services through-

out greater Kentucky. These organizations include Child Care Council of Kentucky, Commerce Lexington Foundation, Kentucky Chamber Foundation, Lexington Public Library, Urban League of Lexington-Fayette County, and Blue Grass Community Action Partnership Policy Council.

included leading local sponsorship activities, engaging in business development, investing in philanthropic initiatives, and enhancing community engagement efforts throughout 15 counties in central and southeast Kentucky.

What advice would you give to business professionals in Lexington when it comes to volunteering? How would you recommend getting involved in the community? When considering volunteer opportunities, I encourage individuals to align their skills with a nonprofit’s need, understanding that the skills they bring to the nonprofit don’t necessarily need to be the same skills they exercise in their careers. For example, if you are an accountant, that does not mean you need to volunteer to be the board treasurer (although you’ll certainly be asked). You can make just as much impact by offering other skills that bring fulfillment, such as gardening or teaching.

I also highly recommend researching an organization to ensure its mission aligns with an individual’s values and offers manageable volunteer experiences.

How has community involvement furthered your career or helped you advance in your career?

I attribute much of my career success to my community involvement.

Board services have helped expand my professional network, and my engagement with nonprofits has helped me develop leadership skills through managing fundraising events, creating plans for capital projects, enhancing my communication skills, and developing strategic plans. On a more personal level, my community work has enhanced my confidence and given me a deeper sense of purpose.

What inspires you to get involved in your community?

As a lifelong Lexingtonian, I’m passionate about giving back to my community. Growing up in a philanthropically minded family, I’ve been volunteering my entire life. While earning my bachelor’s degree from Transylvania University and MBA from the University of Kentucky, these institutions also offered opportunities to volunteer and engage with the community. And during my career at PNC, my responsibilities have

What has been your greatest achievement as a volunteer and board member? Throughout my tenure at PNC, I’ve had the privilege of leading the local activation of PNC Grow Up Great, an initia-

tive to help prepare children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life. For the past 20-plus years, it has served as a comprehensive vehicle for advancing early childhood education, and it represents a source of pride and achievement for my colleagues and me.

One of the powerful ways PNC Grow Up Great comes to life in our communities is through employee volunteerism. Through paid time off for volunteerism, PNC provides employees with up to 40 hours each year to volunteer with approved organizations. Additionally, the volunteer grants program allows employees to earn grants for these organizations, literally turning our volunteer hours into dollars. For at least six years, I personally have completed my annual 40 volunteer hours at The Nest: Center for Women, Children, and Families, earning the organization over $6,000 in grant funding.

What is a need in our community that you would like to see the business community get behind? There are many worthy causes and organizations that are addressing local needs. One of the most visible and complex challenges is insufficient access to affordable housing, which is being addressed by LFUCG, multiple nonprofits, and businesses — including PNC. Safe, stable, and affordable housing provides a foundation for individuals and families to thrive, which improves health outcomes, educational success, and economic opportunities — all of which benefit our beautiful city of Lexington.
