TAX CREDITS FOR KENTUCKY MANUFACTURERS As a proud member of the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers (KAM), DST Advisory Group has over 30 years of experience working with manufacturers and financial advisors (CPAs) in claiming tax credits. The United States Treasury budgets $14 billion dollars annually in order to pay federal tax credits claimed by U.S. manufacturing taxpayers. Tax credits are dollar for dollar reduction of the tax liability generated by manufacturing income. These tax credits are available to manufacturers who develop or improve either their products and/or processes. Product related tax credits can include developing or improving products, design collaboration with customers and custom engineered products. Process improvements can be product driven, such as set up and run of 1st articles or improvements to the production capabilities, including capital investments. Tool & Die and Job Shops are also excellent candidates for tax credits. DST also has extensive experience in providing tax credits to Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive manufacturers. Eligible expenditures for tax credits may include a percentage of salaries & labor, prototypes expenses, 1st articles expenses, tooling expenses, external design or testing expenses and some capital investments for production processes. The value of the tax credit generally equals 6% of eligible expenditures. If the tax credits are not used in the year claimed, they can be carried forward up to 20 years for future utilization. Tax credits can be claimed annually as well as 3 prior years to the current year. For small businesses, the tax credit may be eligible to offset payroll taxes.
