CHAIRMAN’S AND CEO’S MESSAGE

T

O SAY THAT THIS HAS BEEN

a challenging year doesn’t come close to adequately describing the level of struggle, anxiety, adversity and frustration we have all faced. In fact, we aren’t sure if there is an adequate way to sum it all up. Yet, we know how it feels because we are in it with you. We are in it together as a city, a county, state, nation, and even world. Since March, we have worked tirelessly to support our members and the community. We shifted our resources to connect with you individually, to understand how you were impacted, and what you needed to get through. Based on what we heard from you, the Metro Chamber took on some big community issues that weren’t being addressed by our local governments. Early on, we convened other chambers of commerce in the region to propose a set of recommendations for local governments to support small business and community. We helped a small group of business owners and medical professionals draft a plan to safely and responsibly re-open the local economy. We helped other business groups write a 10-point economic recovery plan. The Metro Chamber has also ramped up its advocacy efforts, pressing the needs of small businesses and the economy with elected officials in our cities, county, state, and nation on an almost daily basis. We also heard that too many of our members were in limbo early on in the pandemic, waiting for the implementation of federal relief packages. Seeded by an investment from the Community Foundation Sonoma County, we were able to raise and distribute over $120,000 in emergency relief grants to small business throughout Sonoma County. Later, as child care centers were under pressure to remain open, we were able to partner with the Celebrate Community fund to provide $25,000 to child care providers so they could survive

and serve working families. Like many of your businesses, our organization has had to adapt. We have said goodbye to cherished co-workers, figured out virtual work environments, and adjusted our programing to be relevant during the pandemic. You will read about some of this in the magazine. Programs like Open & Out provided a life-line for our downtown restaurants and merchants, and helped provide a ray of hope and beauty through art installations. You will also read about some amazing members who adapted too. One thing that was highlighted time and again this year is that none of our work is done alone. Our programs can only function with hundreds of Chamber volunteers and engaged members. The Chamber itself can’t exist without your continued membership. For all of the partnership and trust and commitment this represents, we are eternally grateful. 2020 brings us our second year publishing a magazine in partnership with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Press Democrat, which provides exposure for our members to tens of thousands of readers. On behalf of the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber Board of Directors, we hope you enjoy this year’s magazine— and we thank you for all you do in our community. Sincerely,

CHILD

Investing in Our Current and Future Success

Care

Bright spots in confronting our community’s child care challenges BY ANANDA SWEET

W

ITH AN AVERAGE RETURN of $8 for every

dollar invested—that’s a better return than the stock market—an investment in child care yields significant societal and economic returns. These returns come in the form of savings in special education and remediation, better health outcomes, reduced need for social services, lower criminal justice costs, and increased self-sufficiency and productivity. Additionally, high-quality, affordable, and accessible child care has a significant impact on the economic growth and competitiveness of our companies and country. Yet America is facing a child care challenge that threatens the productivity and strength of the workforce of today—as well as the quality of the workforce of tomorrow.

8

SANTA ROSA METRO CHAMBER

SantaRosaMetroChamber.com

Child care is now widely recognized as a critical need to ensure a successful future for us all. Yet costs and insufficient availability of care are keeping people out of the workforce and pushing American families into debt. Even before COVID-19, 62% of Californians lived in areas where child care was nearly impossible to find, and Sonoma County was no exception. When Sonoma County schools closed for several weeks in October of 2017 due to the Tubbs Fire, the child care crisis that existed pre-fire was pushed to the front of our conversations. As a community, we began to see that accessibility to quality child care was an issue that affected us all, and new alliances and efforts were formed to begin to address this crucial issue. Once again, as the pandemic has caused the closure of schools and child care programs, the crisis level urgency to address our child care challenge is brought to the forefront of our conversations, this time at a national level as well. Our child care system was extremely fragile pre-COVID. Today, that fragility is felt deeply by us all. Parents are trying to balance child care and work. Child care providers are trying to stay open or re-open under COVID health guidelines that introduce new costs while reducing the number of children they can serve. And employers are trying to determine how and when their working parents can return to work. Pre-pandemic we had made tremendous local progress in beginning to create cross-sector partnerships and in recovering some of the slots lost during the wildfire disasters. While crisis after crisis has meant setbacks, there have been many local bright spots where our community has stepped up with solutions to our child care crisis. Employer Supported Child Care

employer supported child care, providing assistance by bringing in experts and providers, and serving as a convener and advocate from investigation to implementation. By working collaboratively with Community Child Care Council (4Cs), the City of Santa Rosa and the Child Care Planning Council throughout this effort, we have been able to pivot as a group to address the COVID-19 impact and provide resources for interim solutions such as distance learning cohorts. While this shift in our focus to address our most immediate needs and achievable goals was crucial, we’ve built coalitions, improved local policy, and put together tools and resources that will enable us to get immediately to work to fortify our child care system as we recover from the pandemic. Keysight Technologies On-site Child Care Project Although the project is on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic, Keysight Technologies, Inc. will open a new on-site child care facility for Keysight employees and the public. The site will provide quality early education and care to approximately 100 children, and will serve an important role in Keysight’s employee retention and recruitment plan. “Keysight fully understands that offering on-site child care is important to attracting and retaining the best talent in the North Bay and surrounding areas,” says Hamish Gray, senior vice president at Keysight. “Ron Nersesian—chairman, president and CEO of Keysight—was a driving force behind this investment decision, which is reflective of the company’s commitment to our employees and to all of Sonoma County.” The new child care center will be run by Bright Horizons, a national leader in high-quality employer supported child care, offering early education and care for children ages 0-12 years, weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. City of Santa Rosa and Child Care Policy

High-quality, affordable, and accessible child care has a significant impact on the economic growth and competitiveness of companies in our region, and is vital in supporting and retaining working families in our community. The data are clear that quality child care provides significant returns for children, parents, employers, and our community. Funded by First 5 Sonoma County for its work on employer supported child care, the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber has been engaging major employers and community partners to increase access to quality early care and education in Sonoma County. Key pieces of this effort include presenting the business case for

The City of Santa Rosa recognizes increasing access to quality child care is an important economic development initiative and has updated policies to reflect this position. According to Raissa de la Rosa, the city’s economic development director, “Quality early child care is critical to healthy communities. Access to child care and child development resources aids the economic stability and well-being of families, which in turn helps improve productivity and the economy in general.” The city has implemented updates to the city code—unanimously approved by City Council—to better enable new child care facility development. City staff are available to work with child care development project managers, outlining a streamlined pathway to support a new project through its development timeline. During this September’s goal setting meeting, the City of Santa Rosa set child care as a top tier priority. This is a huge win for our community as these priorities determine focus and funding. The city has identified initial funds to allocate for economic recovery specific to child care needs, creating an opportunity to leverage additional funds to strengthen our local child care system.

Child Care Resiliency Fund First 5 Sonoma County has launched a new Child Care Resiliency Fund, which will be initially seeded with $500,000 from the City of Santa Rosa and $420,000 from First 5. The organization will continue to seek additional funding—already, they have received a commitment from the Community Foundation for $177,000. From this, First 5 will administer grants to local providers to stabilize the child care industry. The creation of this fund illustrates the valuable role of First 5 Sonoma County, not only as a strategic funder, but as an influencer and advocate for children, families, and our community.

“Child care is an economic driver that supports parents’ earnings while children are learning,” explains Melanie Dodson, executive director of 4Cs. “It is critical that we continue to invest in and advocate for our working families and child care providers so that the child care industry can survive COVID-19.” City of Santa Rosa’s School of Rec Program

Child Care for Essential Workers

Pre-COVID, 4Cs was working to support local employer’s workforce needs by creating programs for emergency pop-up child care as a temporary solution for school and child care center closures due to wildfire disasters, evacuations, and PSPS events. When the shelter in place order closed schools and child care centers in March, 4Cs worked with funding from the County of Sonoma and First 5 Sonoma County to ensure health care employees had access to low cost and affordable child care, initially serving 80 children of these essential workers. With the governor’s executive order expanding funds for state child care subsidies, 4Cs was able to extend this program to all essential workers in need of child care, serving 388 additional children in April, May and June. The work of 4Cs and many local participating providers filled a crucial need in supporting essential workers in a time of crisis.

With schools unable to resume in-person instruction in August due to COVID-19, the City of Santa Rosa helped fill the resulting gap by using Recreation and Parks Department staff and space to create their School of Rec - Distance Learning Camp & Care program. The program has served 120 children since August, providing a haven for students who need a safe and supportive place to attend online classes during the day. “We know the challenges that Santa Rosa’s working families face during this pandemic are very real,” stresses Kelley Magnuson, the city’s recreation division director. “Beyond academic support, the staff help students to work through technology snags and safely provide the children with social and recreational interaction through outdoor activities such as games and sports. The city’s longtime Camp Wa Tam director, who is also a veteran teacher of 20-plus years, helped design the program in consultation with local schools. The result is a winning combination of part classroom, part day camp, which both kids and parents really seem to love!” Distance Leaning in the Workplace Francis Ford Coppola Winery was determined to do something to help their employees with school-aged children when

schools did not reopen in the fall. They partnered with Sonoma County YMCA to offer a distance learning and child care program using Coppola’s on-site event space. “In addition to making a positive impact with our employees who are taking advantage of the program, we have received numerous compliments on how this has improved morale company-wide, even for those who remain working from home,” says Gina Charbonneau, Coppola’s EVP of people operations. “It further strengthens our culture of family. On-site employees enjoy seeing the kids outside playing or decorating pumpkins or studying. It’s a nice light in a challenging time.” Tackling Two Pressing Issues at Once In an innovative move, Cornerstone Properties is working to incorporate child care into its proposed downtown Santa Rosa housing development. With the cost of housing and the lack of access to child care being the largest impediments to recruit and retain young working families in Santa Rosa, Cornerstone’s Ross Street project aims to bring a public benefit to residents by serving their child care needs on-site. It is a novel approach to addressing two of the most significant crises facing our community. A Silver Lining While there is still much work to be done, these bright spots reflect the silver lining of confronting the increased challenges

of our community’s child care crisis. And while these highlights represent only a portion of the good work being done, the positive momentum reveals the growing recognition that child care matters to all of us. Although chambers of commerce do not typically take this work on, we view it as critical to the future of our economy. As such, the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber is committed to continuing to work with the community for solutions to meet the child care needs of our workforce, to ensure that all children have access to early learning opportunities that will increase their chances for success in life, and to elevate our collective understanding of child care as essential infrastructure that is critical to our economic and societal success.

Making the Connection

STARTING POINT: CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS Young Professionals host a dialogue on race & community action BY KEVIN STOLL

T

HE METRO CHAMBER’S YOUNG Professionals

Network (YPN) is best known for providing professional development and business networking opportunities to young professionals. But when the death of George Floyd pushed the topic of racial justice and equity to the forefront of national conversations, YPN deviated from its core mission to hold an event on that topic. “We realized that regardless of what many of us had done to educate ourselves and contribute to the movement toward racial justice in our personal lives,” says Lauren Funaro, a YPN advisory board member, “as a group we had not acknowledged race on any of our platforms or events.” YPN advisory board chair, Keith Roberts, further elaborated: “We wanted to have an honest and open dialogue with members of NAACP since people of color are continuing to be disenfranchised, discriminated against and have been impacted by excessive police force.” The hour-long virtual conference, “A Dialogue on Race and Community Action,” had a trifold goal: 1) to educate YPN and community members on the overarching movement toward racial equity, 2) to give guests the tools to incorporate this awareness into their personal and professional lives, and 3) to introduce them to Black-owned businesses and groups that they could support financially or otherwise. Guest speakers Rubin Scott and Kimberly MacNeil, President and Vice President of the Santa Rosa-Sonoma County Chapter of the NAACP, spoke about their experiences with prejudice and how to improve systems that support Black lives before answering questions from some of the 50+ YPN members and guests who joined. They encouraged

12

SANTA ROSA METRO CHAMBER

SantaRosaMetroChamber.com

participants to engage with Black-owned businesses, assist with funding and participation in culturally diverse events, and to engage and ally themselves with organizations promoting equity for the long-term rather than letting momentum slip away. To fortify that resolve for engagement and momentum, MacNeil says, “While you are enjoying your constitutional rights, your human rights and your civil rights, be mindful that many of us are still fighting for ours.” “As young professionals we have a responsibility toward creating an inclusive and equitable tomorrow,” YPN’s Funaro sums up. “This requires having hard conversations on race, going inward to recognize and question our own biases, and bringing what we have learned into our personal and professional lives. I am so thankful to Ruben and Kym for creating this space for us to learn. Now it’s up to us to continue to do our part.” To keep the dialogue on race going, YPN’s Roberts participated in the Metro Chamber’s City Council Candidates Forum. After candidates answered questions about how they’d handle important issues involving the economy, housing development, and homelessness, moderator Dan Condron turned the time over to Roberts to ask the final question: how would these candidates balance the myriad of issues surrounding the struggle for racial justice and police reform, support for public safety, disdain for riots and vandalism, and the right to peacefully assemble. “We can’t be afraid to have uncomfortable conversations about what causes us to have feelings of social bias,” said NAACP’s Scott in a follow up interview with the North Bay Business Journal. “It’s okay to be uncomfortable and analyzing such experiences can lead to growth as we understand why we feel

the way we do and become aware of the need to change.” The Santa Rosa Metro Chamber certainly agrees: while it’s an important first step to simply acknowledge that Black lives matter, the Chamber believes that speaking this truth is just the start. There are systemic issues in our society that need to be addressed as we continue our march toward equity and justice and living up to our highest ideals.

BEHIND THE BUSINESS

BREWING CONNECTEDNESS Serving the community goes beyond pints and plates for Third Street Aleworks BY KEVIN STOLL

W

HEN ARIKA AND CHRIS

Frederick and Matthew Vella were considering purchasing the iconic Third Street Aleworks, they were thinking about more than just diversifying their small portfolio of local businesses. The trio, who have been friends since their days at Piner High, wanted to build deeper connections within the community. At the time, they owned and operated Frederick Engraving, which was mostly online sales. Their recent acquisition of Halls Executive Gifts and Awards further connected them to the business community. But Aleworks would give them even deeper roots within the community-at-large. Aleworks being a place to connect was something all three of them had experienced. “We always felt it was a kind of community hub,” says Matthew. “I remember in college when I was doing my EMT Certificate, a group of us would go. It was a nice place because it had more of a family orientation. It wasn’t too loud, and it gave us space where we could actually sit and study for upcoming exams. So, it really did fit as a place where we could bring a community together.” For the trio, building community connection isn’t only about bringing people into the restaurant or up to the bar. When wildfires struck in 2019, they opened their kitchen to cook and deliver breakfast for first responders on the front lines and evacuees at a nearby shelter. And when the pandemic’s shelter-in-place order had everyone feeling on edge about venturing out even to purchase essential items, some thinking manifested itself as grocery basics in a box. “We had a lot of patrons telling us at the time that they were having a hard time getting stuff at the grocery store,” explains Chris. “And we had a lot of vendors on our side that were struggling to figure out how to offload their product that was mainly for restaurants.” Partnering with Andy’s Produce Market,

14

14METRO CHAMBER SANTA ROSA

Franco American Bakery, and Golden Gate Meats, their aim was to provide the community with basic groceries while helping promote social distancing and eliminating time out of the house in crowded stores. And it took off. “In total we did over 7,500 boxes,” continues Chris. “For me, personally, I was surprised at the emotional side—people calling up and thanking us while crying on the phone. It was very meaningful for us, beyond what we were doing, being able to see how it was received by the community.” Yet even with this type of creative thinking, being shut down at a moment’s notice hadn’t been easy. Securing Paycheck Protection Program money in June—a few days before the program shut down—provided a safety net that allowed them to try different strategies like opening for lunch, adding food delivery service, extending their patio for outdooronly dining, and offering weekly off-menu specials to encourage repeat business. Being stuck at home in the early days of the shelter-in-place, Matt and Chris redesigned the website, adding online ordering capabilities that have increased to-go orders. They’ve also increased their beer distribution to grocery stores like Oliver’s, Safeway and Raley’s. “We’ve seen a push with places really supporting local businesses,” says Chris.

“Oliver’s has been a huge driver for us. Even getting into the big box of Raley’s and Safeway, both of them have local coolers where they’re running only local brands.” But with the winter months coming, there’s still uncertainty for many local restaurants including Third Street Aleworks. Arika, Chris, and Matthew still remain faithful to supporting the community despite the business challenges—whether it’s donating the proceeds from their Black Is Beautiful beer collaboration to local nonprofit, the LIME Foundation, or establishing fundraisers to provide food for front line first responders during this year’s fire season. “It hasn’t been easy for any of us—for businesses or the community,” says Chris. “We’re trying to figure out the best way to continue moving forward.”

BEHIND THE BUSINESS

UPTOWN DEVELOPMENTS Cornerstone building momentum for a thriving, walkable urban core BY KEVIN STOLL

T

HE LONG-HELD VISION of downtown Santa Rosa becoming more uptown is increasingly coming into focus. Two major residential/mixed-use development projects—one centered on an existing parking lot at Mendocino Avenue and Ross Street, the other on the former train yard west of the downtown SMART station—will add momentum to the new housing developments seeking to spark more life in the center of our city. Both of these infill development projects, proposed by Cornerstone Communities, are being advanced while the city is on the verge of completing a Downtown Specific Area Plan centered around increasing the amount of people living and working near the SMART station and the transit mall. “Cornerstone’s vision for downtown Santa Rosa is about much more than the buildings themselves,” says Pauline Block, who runs the marketing and

development efforts for Cornerstone. “Downtown Santa Rosa has the potential to be a thriving city center, sustain a robust workforce and attract innovative companies with high-paying salaries from all over the Bay Area.” The 8-story Ross Street development is set to include 109 affordable-by-design apartments that will bring critically needed housing to Santa Rosa. A rooftop deck, outdoor courtyard, fitness center and resident lounge are all part of the plan. Cornerstone also envisions adding on-site child care as well as private and public amenities to the streetlevel spaces, providing a public benefit and modernizing what is currently an underutilized site. Enhancements to Ross Street itself—making it into a pedestrianfriendly right of way with outdoor dining, arts events, and neighborhood gatherings—seek to transform downtown into an energetic commercial and cultural center.

On the other side of the tracks from Railroad Square, phase one of Cornerstone’s SMART Village development would be 6-stories with 110 apartments on the 2.36 acre West Sixth Street property. Nestled between two historic districts—the Railroad Square Historic District and the West End Historic District—the SMART Village’s design features and materials will maintain the adjoining districts aesthetic feel, coupled with architectural language of the cannery buildings. The development is investing in the future of a sustainably driven and resilient community, affording residents a broad array of transit options, including the Railroad Square SMART Station and regional bike network connections, and thereby reducing dependency on cars. A connection to the nearby Santa Rosa Creek Trail and amenities such as a second day care facility, outdoor community pool, and open gathering

spaces for residents and neighbors to explore are projected to spur communitycentered growth where people can live, work, shop and play in a thriving, walkable urban space. Both projects are part of Cornerstone’s broader redevelopment plans that include the other half of the old train yard, the current Press Democrat building, and a city-owned parking lot across from the Santa Rosa Plaza. Dense, transit-oriented housing that fosters stronger connections between Railroad Square and Courthouse Square is aimed at being growth that’s both sustainable and good for the environment. “With a focus on community, sustainability and innovation, Cornerstone’s urban infill developments will not only provide a range of housing opportunities, but also create a strong sense-of-place for the city,” says Block. “Our transit-oriented master development plan focuses on adding much-needed community amenities such as child care, health clinics, markets, outdoor open space and public art which all help address what is missing in the current downtown, and connect it to Railroad Square. We are here for the long haul, and will be a valuable cornerstone to the North Bay community.” Other Proposed Projects in & around Downtown Santa Rosa 1 Santa Rosa Avenue: The project proposes future development of a 7-story, mixed-use building comprised of commercial space and 119 market-rate and affordable multi-family housing units consisting of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units, with ground floor amenity spaces, an outdoor courtyard, and a rooftop deck in Downtown. 420 Mendocino Ave: The project proposes the redevelopment of a 0.48-acre site with a 6-level building containing 116 studio, one, and two-bedroom units, ground floor commercial space and amenities, and a roof top terrace. 3575 Mendocino Avenue: Proposed future development of a ±532-unit multifamily development comprised of 162 affordable (Very Low-Low Income) senior housing units and up to 370 market rate units set in a compact, sustainable, transit-oriented development on a 13.3acre site. BEHIND THE BUSINESS

TIPS ROADSIDE Perseverance in the face of adversity

T

BY CHRIS VOMVOLAKIS

IPS ROADSIDE SITS ON the

corner of Highway 12 and Adobe Canyon Road in Kenwood. It’s a bright, modern, stylish roadhouse that features southern style “elevated comfort food.” The restaurant features a spacious bar area, and open display kitchen, and two large, airy dining rooms with Sonoma County-centric décor art pieces by local artists dotting the walls. When TIPS Roadside opened in June 2018, owners Susie and Andrew Pryfogle had no idea that the next three years of their lives as newly-minted restaurant entrepreneurs would include facing historic wildfires, floods, public safety power outages, a worldwide pandemic, and most recently, more fires. Of course, all of this was on top of the normal dayto-day challenges many small business owners face to simply keep their doors open. It is the Pryfogle’s hope that their guests will feel the love of community, passion for food, and the comfort of home every time you walk through their door. It is, in fact, the spirit of community that drives their passion and selfless service. For instance, during the 2017 Tubbs Fire, when they were just starting to build out the restaurant, they decided to drive their food truck, the Tri-Tip Trolley, directly to the frontline and provide meals for firefighters and first responders with food donated by area restaurants. “Many of the firefighters are out on the lines for 20-plus hours, and it’s a small thing we can do to give back to them and to thank them for what they’re doing for all of us,” said Andrew. Most recently, the Pryfogle’s and the TIPS crew were out feeding firefighters again, this time as crews battled the fastmoving 2020 Glass Complex Fire that roared through portions of Kenwood and northeastern Santa Rosa. They parked the Tri-Tip Trolley at the St. Francis Center on Calistoga Road where CAL FIRE located their base of operations and immediately

began feeding 150 to 200 firefighters a day for more than a week. Susie said that after three years of fires, serving the first responders has been by far “the most rewarding work of our lives.” THe nearly instantaneous economic recession triggered by the pandemic has wreaked havoc on businesses large and small throughout Sonoma County. While every sector of the economy has been impacted by COVID-19 regulations, there is perhaps no industry that has been as intrinsically affected as restaurants and bars. The pandemic severely impacted dine-in restaurants, where service and ambiance are key factors in the dining experience. Nevertheless, the Pryfogle’s have turned to increasingly inventive ways to pivot their business model, which includes building an outdoor courtyard dining area and creating a takeout food and beverage model to keep inventory flowing and their loyal staff employed. This means constantly restrategizing, finding income where they can. Susie explained about the catastrophic financial position the problematic but necessary fire-related public safety power outages put their restaurant in. “Every time the power is shut off, we lose several thousand dollars, and because it’s not out for 72 hours we can’t claim it on insurance.” She went on to say, “It’s approximately $60,000-$80,000 for a generator to run our restaurant and we just aren’t in a position to make that kind of investment. Building out the courtyard

for outdoor dining was already a huge financial hit.” THe National Restaurant Association has estimated that 1 in 6 restaurants nationwide has closed long-term or for good during the pandemic, and it predicts more hard times ahead. Yet with all these seemingly insurmountable hurdles the Pryfogle’s have persevered and answered the call of the bell through a mix of hard work, creativity, and ingenuity—along with a lot of tears, frustration, and sleepless nights. “It feels like we’re paddling upstream every day, but at least we still have a paddle,” Susie said. Restaurants like TIPS Roadside are finding a new, if not fragile, ever-changing, normal. One that, unfortunately, keeps people out of dining rooms but still puts food on the table. For a lot of restaurants, the new normal is not about profitability, but an underlying commitment and unspoken, unwavering commitment to serve the greater good. Andrew and Susie Pryfogle embody that commitment, and then some.

Old Courthouse Square typically sees an average of 35 events throughout the year, and with all permits canceled from March this was a major shift. Canceled events included IRONMAN 70.3, the annual flagship triathlon that brings approximately 8,500 athletes, families and spectators to Santa Rosa from around the world. The loss of large, crowdgathering events led the Chamber to shift its annual downtown tree lighting event, Winter Lights, to a five week long winter and holiday celebration, adding winterthemed activities and opportunities to the pedestrian areas of 4th Street. In April 2021, California Poets in the Schools will be installing Poet Trees—an interactive art project that will beautify and enliven the downtown area while encouraging people through poetry, with concepts of hope, belonging and community. Old Courthouse Square also has changes coming. Since its reunification in 2017, Sonoma County residents have been clamoring for the reinstallation of the Ruth Asawa panels, which were created by the renowned artist alongside

Sonoma County residents and school children in the late 1980s. The DAO, in conjunction with the Hugh Futrell Corporation, is rebuilding the fountain on the south side of the Square which will enable the City of Santa Rosa to reinstall the panels. The City has also undertaken a multi-year project to identify a new large-scale piece of art for the north side of the Square. Installation is expected in early 2022. The success of Open & Out has created what is likely to be a permanent shift for Downtown Santa Rosa. As the partnership between the Chamber, City and DAO will begin to focus on the future, it’s essential to identify both short-term solutions and long-term programmatic changes to maintain the positive support from the community. While new life has been breathed into downtown, the tough times are not over. The ongoing support of the City and members of the community will be helpful to seeing our small businesses survive as the difficulties of the pandemic and doing business in Sonoma County reverberate.

Emergency Grants Help Small Business Owners Stay Afloat Through COVID-19 STORY BY DANI BURLISON, PHOTOS BY ERIK CASTRO FOR COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SONOMA COUNTY

At midnight March 18, 2020, Sonoma County’s shelter-in-place restrictions took effect, cloistering residents and shuttering businesses in an attempt to stem the spread of COVID-19. One month in, many small businesses not deemed essential had faced the immediate shut-off of revenue without a similar shut-off of costs—things like rent, utilities, phone and other basic operational expenses. And while the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program was promising to provide critical lifelines to help small businesses make it through the health crisis, the time delays in applying for and receiving the money threatened to be too long for some businesses. In early April, the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber launched a Small Business Emergency Grants program in partnership with Community Foundation Sonoma County, and with additional funding from Bank

of Marin and Poppy Bank, as well as a number of personal and anonymous contributions. Through this program, any Sonoma County small business with 20 or fewer employees, regardless of their affiliation with the Metro Chamber and regardless of the citizenship of the business owner, could apply for a grant of up to $2,000. Although these grants were small, they were meant to help bridge the gap for critical and immediate expenses until the larger federal aid was distributed, and in the first month over $120,000 in funding was distributed to help small business owners across Sonoma County stay afloat. The Community Foundation followed up with some of the small business owners who received the grant to learn how it helped their business. This article was originally published May 18, 2020.

Chamber contacted members and asked what their most pressing needs were. Time and again, small businesses (defined through this program as having fewer than 20 employees) said they simply needed money to pay their bills. As Rumble began thinking of ways the Metro Chamber could help, he reached out to us at Community Foundation Sonoma County (CFSC) and asked if we would provide seed funding for the emergency grants program. They launched applications with a $50,000 grant from our Sonoma County Resilience Fund. “Small business owners in Sonoma County have poured their lives into growing something locally, creating businesses that support our local economy and keep many others employed,” says Elizabeth Brown, President and CEO of CFSC. “Right now, these business owners have had to make heartbreaking decisions; many forced to furlough their staff. We wanted to find a way to ensure that the people who work in small businesses will have jobs to return to.” “[The grants] are not intended at all to be the one thing that saves businesses,” says Rumble. “But it could bridge people through the period of time until bigger dollars start to flow, or the shelter in place eases a little bit.” Rumble says that the grants are available to eligible businesses anywhere in Sonoma County in the amounts of $1,000 or $2,000. The Metro Chamber received applications from a wide range of

businesses, including nail and hair salons, bakeries, restaurants, retail, freelance writers, gyms, health and fitness spaces, and hospitality businesses. Rebecca Pennington, who has owned Energize Hot Yoga (formerly Bikram Yoga) for ten years, says she panicked when 28

she realized she’d have to close the doors to the studio, which has operated in Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square for twenty years. “I had a student pull me aside, it was about March 1, and he said, ‘Hey Rebecca, you should really start thinking about virtual classes in case this virus makes it over here, and everything has to get shut down.’ And I thought, ‘That’s totally “[The grants] are not intended crazy. And although many students have remained on their auto-debit monthly memberships—fees have been reduced by 50%—Pennington says about half of their students have canceled their memberships. Additionally, there was a recent break-in at the empty studio, though only a few items were stolen. Pennington says she will schedule online classes through the fall, in hopes of returning to the studio at some point in the future. In the meantime, the emergency funds have helped her offset expenses. “[The emergency grant is] paying half of my rent this month. Every penny helps, and I’m just trying to get my business through this slump,” she says. “My business has been there for a very long time. It’s pretty well established, luckily. But we’ve never—knock on wood—until now, had to really worry about covering rent.” According to California’s reopening criteria, higher-risk businesses that require contact with patrons, such as bodywork and hair salons, fall into Phase 3, and will only reopen with strict

modifications and restrictions. This is especially challenging for businesses that see a surge in patronage in the spring and summer months. Veronica Passalacqua owns The Beauty Spot, a GreenCircle certified Sustainable Salon in Santa Rosa that offers haircuts, organic hair color, and esthetician services. The salon has been closed since early March. A Windsor resident, Passalacqua was evacuated from her home for two and a half months during the Kincade Fire and is now facing the opposite extreme of sheltering in place. She says both incidents have caused stress, but she’s following orders and keeping her salon closed. “We felt some pressure leading up to [shelter in place] that this was going to impact us somehow. We already had a really beefed up sanitation procedure in the salon, so we were being very cautious, and honestly, that’s sort of where I thought we would stay,” says Passalacqua. “We were already trying to get ahead of that. Then on the 14th, I was watching a news conference, and I felt my heart jump into my throat, and I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh. We’re going to get shut down. This is the real deal.’” Although Passalacqua has sold some products online, her salon has taken a big financial hit. The emergency grant has helped Passalacqua pay her rent at her downtown Santa Rosa salon and has allowed her some time to strategize her next steps. And as eager as she is to get herself and her staff back to work,

she is following the CDC’s lead and keeping her doors shut until she’s given the green light to reopen. “I’m really, really certain that, with what we knew about viruses before COVID, I could protect people with the sanitation I had in place,” she says. “And though I really want to get back to work, and I want my company to survive and my staff to be able to have a paycheck, my concern is their safety.” Rumble says that as more funding comes in, the Metro Chamber will continue to move down their list of eligible applicants and distribute the much-needed funds. In the meantime, Singerline points out the importance of supporting small businesses and recognizing our interconnectedness here in Sonoma County. “When you have a small business, you roll the dice. People put life savings or borrow money or whatever, and they start a loan, and they start a little business, and they build it up,” he says. “You put your heart and soul into it, you build up a beautiful little business, and then things happen. Fires, the floods, and now this COVID-19. And all of a sudden, you’ve gone through your savings. You have nothing. And what do you do?” For now, he’s grateful for the grant. His mom is doing better. His wine tours, he hopes, will be back on the road eventually. “We can’t lose these little businesses like mine—I support so many other businesses, and they support me,” he continues. “And then, in turn, I’m able to give money back to the community.”

TIMELESS: PEANUTS COMICS STRIP TURNS 70 BY CHRIS VOMVOLAKIS

“C

URSE YOU RED BARON!,”

“It was a dark and stormy night,” “Good grief,” “You blockhead!” and of course, “Aaugh!” Recognize these phrases? Those additions to the popular lexicon—and familiar characters like the beleaguered Charlie Brown, bossy Lucy, and loyal but sometimes lazy Snoopy—are the legacy of the late Charles M. “Sparky” Schulz’s comic strip “Peanuts,” which made its debut 70 years ago in seven American newspapers on October 2, 1950. The inaugural four-panel comic, in which a boy remarks how he dislikes “Good ol’ Charlie Brown,” set the tone for its bald-headed hero. Before long, fans grew attached to the quirky, philosophical cast of characters: the oft-maligned Charlie Brown, who always strikes out

30

and gets his kite stuck in a tree; bossy Lucy and her security blanket-toting little brother Linus; the Beethoven-loving Schroeder, his head always buried in his toy piano; and Snoopy, the pet who sleeps atop his doghouse and engages in imaginative midair battles with the Red Baron. Sparky creatively funneled his own life experiences into the strip. Snoopy was based on his old family dog, Spike (a name revived later with the introduction of Snoopy’s brother). Lucy’s cruel tendency to pull a football away from Charlie Brown was inspired by childhood antics. And the Little Red-Haired Girl, the never-seen source of Charlie Brown’s romantic anguish, was drawn from an old girlfriend who had spurned Sparky’s marriage proposal.

At the height of its popularity, Peanuts ran seven days a week in more than 2,600 newspapers, with a daily readership of more than 350 million. Twenty years after Sparky’s death, the comics he created that helped generations of readers learn about life, love, and friendships still runs in more than 2,000 newspapers around the world. His far-reaching work has been translated into 21 languages and is published in 75 countries. Altogether, Sparky produced more than 18,000 strips over nearly 50 years of work. Over the second half of the 20th century, “Peanuts” portrayed the everyday life of children and sometimes reflected much larger world events, from the Vietnam War to racism. It’s obvious the comic strip has left an indelible mark on popular language and culture. Scholars

often point to Sparky’s introduction of his groundbreaking Black character, Franklin, in 1968 or the feminist independence of crabby “fussbudget” Lucy as evidence of the strip’s ongoing relevance to the real world. What would Sparky himself say about the 70th anniversary of his comic strip? “Oh, I think he’d be delighted,” said Jean Schulz, Sparky’s wife, and president of the board of directors at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa. “Sparky always said that it’s not art unless it lasts a century or over generations.” Whether it’s the Great Pumpkin in the well-known holiday cartoon or Lucy pulling away the football, the Peanuts remain timeless and relatable, from Snoopy’s imagination to Charlie Brown’s insecurity. Jean Schulz went on to say many people can identify with the characters: “Charlie Brown’s feeling that he’ll never succeed no matter how hard he tries but never gives up, Lucy’s crabbiness, and Linus’ philosophical side.” A master of empathy, Jean says Sparky was simply observing life and found inspiration everywhere. In 1958, Sparky’s creative wanderlust and inspiration brought him and his young family to Sonoma County. After

several years in snowy Colorado Springs, he turned his sights westward for a kickstart. “We wanted a place in the country, away not only from the crowded cities but less winter weather too. I might as well admit that I’m one of those who goes for that ‘it’s-awonderful-place-toraise-the kids’ line. We wanted to be near San Francisco and here we got more of everything we wanted for our money, especially land,” Sparky said. Sparky purchased a 28-acre property

family to Santa Rosa and opened the Redwood Empire Ice Arena and Warm Puppy Cafe. Sparky was so active in Senior Ice Hockey tournaments that in 1975 he formed Snoopy’s Senior World Hockey Tournament which was held at the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, also known as “Snoopy’s Home Ice.” It’s only fitting that Santa Rosa, Sparky’s hometown during his most prolific creative years from 1969 until his death in 2000, continues its love affair with all things Peanuts. To honor his legacy, the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa was opened on August 17, 2002, two blocks away from Sparky’s former studio, celebrating his life’s work and the art of illustrating and cartooning. Though Sparky’s last original newspaper comic was published 20 years ago the cartoon’s popularity hasn’t faded. Besides the Schulz Museum, which draws 90,000 visitors a year, Japan recently expanded its Schulz Museum and even opened a Peanuts-themed hotel. “The fact that Sparky created characters that meant something to people, and gave them comfort and laughter and solace, he would be happy,” said Schulz. And with a 7 decades-long legacy, it’s a feeling that might only be rivaled by a warm puppy.

Sebastopol was then—and still is—a small town in an agricultural area where apple orchards, vineyards, and redwood trees are all commonly seen along the landscape among farmhouses, water towers, and barns. As an avid sportsman, over the course of the next 10 years Sparky added such features as a swimming pool, a miniature golf course, tennis courts, and horse stables. Sonoma County Housing Fund received a $1 million investment from Kaiser Permanente in February 2020 to accelerate affordable developments. for all income levels and the economic vitality of a community. Knowing this, the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber and the North Coast Builders Exchange formed an Employers Housing Council, which brings the region’s major employers together with developers and local jurisdictions to help advance the development of new housing. In a related effort, the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber also established a partnership with Housing Trust Silicon Valley—one of the country’s most respected affordable housing lenders—to provide financing options to affordable housing projects. Both of these efforts have led to more affordable and market rate housing in our community. Yet, this is a drop in the bucket compared to what is needed. The City of Santa Rosa has also pushed hard on this issue and is on the verge of completing a Downtown Specific Area Plan. The old plan was a failure, by the City’s own admission, setting goals for housing construction without the policies and process to get there. The new plan aligns polices and goals, creating a real pathway for affordable and market rate housing to be built downtown. While land use planning documents don’t get much attention on a daily basis, the City’s efforts to complete the plan in 2020 are vital for new housing construction to start in 2021. With downtown-specific work wrapping up, we now need housing development made easier throughout the city in similar ways.

Related to the housing shortage’s pressure on families is the cost and difficulty of finding quality child care. For example, with our average child care cost of $1,250 per month for a preschooler and nearly $1,400 for an infant, and twobedroom rental prices around double that, an average family can easily spend 60% to 70% of their monthly income just on housing and caring for their family. The unsurprising result of these high costs is an exodus of young people from our community—our emerging workforce and community leadership. In response, First 5 Sonoma County has partnered with the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber and the Community Child Care Council of Sonoma County (4Cs) to engage employers to invest in child care benefits for their workforce. Companies across the country, including Patagonia and Clif Bar as well as many small employers, are investing in benefits ranging from assistance with finding and paying for child care to backup child care and contracting with a provider to run an on-site center. Aligned with this partnership, the City of Santa Rosa recently allocated several hundred thousand dollars to help child care centers remain open and deal with capacity limitations during COVID. This investment is invaluable as parents are dealing with working from home or having to go into work without child care options. The pandemic has not stopped our

work and progress in this area. In partnership with providers and experts like 4Cs, along with business like Francis Ford Coppola Winery, we have helped pop-up emergency child care that allows people to continue to earn a living while their children receive quality care. Our work in this area was deemed so critical that the United States Chamber recently provided a grant to expand our capacity to help additional employers set up similar resources. To lay the groundwork for long term recovery, our small business community needs all the support it can get today. As the holiday season is upon us and 2021 rapidly approaches, that means being even more conscious about spending locally to the extent we can. It also means investment from all levels of government—from the federal to the local—is critical. In the long term, the challenges we face in recovery are no different than before COVID. We must do all we can to build the housing we need for our children, friends, and neighbors to make sure we maintain the character of our community. We must dramatically expand access to quality child care to help parents advance in their careers and help children start their lives on a solid foundation. It is all too easy to get distracted from these priorities and want to develop news plans and ideas. It is all too critical to not let that happen.

THE SONOMA SERENGETI AROUND THE CLOCK ADVENTURE AT SAFARI WEST BY CHRIS VOMVOLAKIS

A

DAZZLING HERD OF ZEBRA thunder across

the valley, their stripes shimmering in the blazing sun. A rowdy gang of Cape buffalo hold court on a hilltop and a fuzzy baby giraffe wobbles near its mother. Cheetahs warily prowl nearby, eyeing each other. Life on the Serengeti, the Sonoma Serengeti, that is. Behold the wilds of Safari West, a 400-acre nature preserve tucked amid the foothills of the Mayacama Mountains just northeast of Santa Rosa. The next best thing to going on safari in Africa, this wildlife oasis is the perfect family-friendly getaway. Riding high atop an off-road jeep, guests bounce down bumpy roads on a quest to encounter dozens of species of animals, from hyenas and antelope to ostriches and rhinos. If you want to be amazed by the dramatic spectacle of gazelles rubbing elbows with Watusi cattle on golden rolling hillsides as hawks soar overhead, and impalas, water buffalo and kudus graze nearby, look no further.

A Place to Call Home

Officially founded in 1989, Peter Lang began a captive breeding program for the varied and often critically endangered species in his menagerie. He worked closely with local zoological facilities, including experts at the San Francisco Zoo. It was there that he met lead curator, raptor-specialist, and his future wife, Nancy Lang. Combining their unique skill-sets, the pair set about turning the vast swath of oak woodland into the

world class wildlife preserve it is today. Safari West gained membership in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums by 1992 and added children’s tours soon after. After four years of operating their conservation breeding facility behind closed doors, Peter and Nancy opened Safari West to the public in July 1993. From the very beginning, their mission focused on conservation and education. Now, 27 years later, Peter, Nancy, and their staff continue to inspire conservation advocates of every stripe. They achieve this goal by offering guided field trips to Sonoma County schools. As the preserve has grown over the years, so too have their offerings. These days alongside the school field trips, they proudly offer their Classic Safari, various private excursions, behind the scenes adventures, and even a chance to be a Keeper for a Day. All these offerings have at their core, a focus on the wildlife and our collective role in shaping the future on planet Earth.

An Immersive African Experience

Glamping, Anyone?

With a full array of wildlife excursions, the Lang’s found that their guests wanted an even more immersive experience. And so, for that reason, in the late ‘90s, they began construction on the Safari West Tent Camp. With the tranquil Catfish Pond serving as the center, the tent camp sits serenely between the Gazelle Pasture, the Hundred Acres, and the Vista habitats.

An overnight glamping adventure at Safari West begins as darkness falls across the preserve. At the Savannah Café, guests can enjoy a hearty camp-style dinner of barbecue ribs, corn on the cob, Tanzanian Chapati bread and apple crumble with Ugandan vanilla bean ice cream. After dinner, the young ones can frolic on the wide green lawns, doing cartwheels in the evening glow as parents choose from a nicely curated wine list. As everyone beds down for the night in the luxury of their high-end glamping tents, wildebeest and rhinoceros wander outside, which means guests can drift asleep listening to the sounds of the savanna at night. The next morning you wake to the sounds of kookaburras chirping and red river pigs snuffling about. Experiencing the preserve in the early morning light, as the inhabitants come alive, is magical. Before breakfast, take a stroll through the aviary and you may make the acquaintance of a new feathered friend.

Within the camp, guests can enjoy luxury stays in expansive, custom-built tents overlooking a panoramic view of antelope and giraffe. Safari West imports the canvas tents from a legendary manufacturer in Lobatswe, Botswana, and then mounts them on raised platforms on-site. With hardwood floors, Zebraprint bedding, decorative African art, gorgeous handmade furniture, electricity, running hot and cold water, and even in-suite bathrooms, these tents are more comfortable than a hotel. And depending on how wild you want to get, be open-air or tucked-up-tight.

The Sonoma Serengeti

On the Classic Safari Tour, it becomes immediately clear that the guides here are experts, love the job, and support the

goal—a fun experience that promotes conservation and wildlife preservation— although not every animal may be equally beloved. The comical free-roaming guinea fowl—essentially spotted black chickens, with turkey heads and brains to match— are known for their tendency to stumble into other habitats, including the cheetah paddocks, giving rise to the staff term “suicide by cheetah.” After the walking tour, guests pile into (and onto) one of the rugged, opensided “safari vehicles,” a 1950s Dodge M37 Power Wagon with seats for four on the roof. The safari tour takes guests over several miles of dusty track. Along the way you’ll run into herd after herd of elands and zebras. And it turns out zebras have a bit of a nasty streak, while rhinos are quite chummy, almost doglike in their friendliness. Ostriches, by the way, often have sticky fingers, or rather, beaks. They’ll reach into the jeep to make off with a tube of sunblock or a baseball cap. If nothing else, the trip is a rare look at an undeveloped corner of Sonoma the way it was centuries ago. A Bright Future

Safari West entertains and educates thousands of guests every year. Like the nearly 1,000 animals that make their homes there, they are constantly growing and developing. Each year Safari West refines their breeding programs and educational outreach. Each year they take advantage of new, more sustainable technologies to make their operations greener. Each year they welcome more and more new, excited, and curious faces. Santa Rosa is lucky to have a worldclass preserve like Safari West among its top attractions.

SONOMA COUNTY MUSEUMS: PRESERVING HISTORY AND HERITAGE BY CHRIS VOMVOLAKIS

I

N TIMES LIKE THESE the role of

a museum as a space for healing, discourse, and community is more important than ever. Fortunately, Santa Rosa has an abundance of riches in the arts and culture category. Living where wine country meets beer city, there are so many amazing things to see and do that it’s easy—even for locals—to overlook some of our hidden gem attractions. From preserving our history and heritage to sparking our sense of imagination and wonder—whether it’s an in-person visit or on a virtual tour—you’ll want to explore the treasures within these Sonoma County museums. Museum of Sonoma County

Established in 1985, the Museum of Sonoma County (Sonoma County Museum) presents 12-15 rotating art and history exhibitions per year and welcomes over 20,000 visitors annually through general admission, tours, school programs, public programs, and special events. Its 7th Street campus is comprised of the historic 1910 Santa Rosa Post Office, a contemporary art gallery, and a sculpture garden.

The museum also maintains a permanent collection of over 18,000 objects that document the North Bay’s rich history and celebrates local artists. It includes extensive collections of historic paintings, sculpture, photographs, prints, costumes, textiles, ceramics, glass, industrial tools, machinery, wood sculpture, furniture, objects, documents, and graphics relative to the local communities, commerce, technologies, and lifestyles. Notable collections include: Tom Golden’s Christo and Jeanne-Claude collection, which includes 125 drawings, sculptures, collages, and photographs by world-famous conceptual artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Marguerite Wildenhain ceramics, Carroll Barnes sculptures, 19th century California landscapes by artists such as Thomas Hill, Frederick Farina Schafer, and Frederick Butman, objects and artifacts related to the utopian community of Fountaingrove, Thomas Lake Harris, and Kanaye Nagasawa, along with the works of Song Wong Bourbeau (19091996), a third-generation Santa Rosan, known for her tireless dedication as a

In 1875, horticulturist Luther Burbank referred to his adopted hometown of Santa Rosa as “the chosen spot of all this earth.” Over the course of his 55-year residency in Sonoma County as a botanist and pioneer in agricultural science, Burbank developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants. He is credited with introducing more than 250 new varieties of fruit. For his work Burbank garnered a worldwide fame and notoriety becoming friends with celebrities of the period such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Helen Keller, William Jennings Bryant, the King and Queen of Belgium, and Jack London.

Burbank’s legacy is on display at the Luther Burbank Home and Gardens, a City of Santa Rosa designated 4-acre park which previously served as an outdoor laboratory where he carried out his horticultural experiments. On docent-led tours visitors can learn about his fascinating life by visiting the museum, his greenhouse, and the home where he lived. The greenhouse, designed by Burbank himself in 1889, contains a replica of his office as well as numerous exhibits. Visitors can also wander through the peaceful gardens and admire the beauty Burbank studied and to which he dedicated his life. As a nonprofit organization Luther Burbank Home and Gardens counts on contributions to help continue their efforts and support their mission to

preserve the home and gardens of Luther Burbank and share the living legacy of his life, ideals, and contributions to the field of horticulture. Children’s Museum of Sonoma County (CMOSC)

In 2005, a group of Sonoma County mothers inaugurated plans for a children’s museum, addressing the need for a local place for parents, grandparents, and teachers to provide children enriched, learning experiences. Now, 15 years later the CMOSC campus includes over 7,000 square feet of existing interior space, coupled with 36,000 square feet of outdoor exhibits. All exhibits are devoted to science, art, or nature, with a specific emphasis in Mary’s Garden on environmental sustainability, water conservation and renewable energies. Welcoming a whopping 150,000 children and families each year, CMOSC provides hands-on, interactive exhibits and activities in a safe environment that are custom designed for children aged ten years old and younger. Rooted in current early childhood research, CMOSC has become a destination and valuable family resource for Sonoma County and across the region. There’s no shortage of exhibits to explore at CMOSC—look for everything from a hidden fairy world and crocodile dental clinic to a puppet theater and science lab. From painting with shaving cream and jamming on a drum set made of recyclable materials to playing inside a real helicopter, CMOSC is where it’s at for educational fun.

Pacific Coast Air Museum (PCAM)

Founded in 1989, the Pacific Coast Air Museum is a unique collection of authentic, well-cared-for aircraft, with a dedicated base of aviation experts who give back to the Sonoma County community through education, preservation, and honoring the service of veterans.

PCAM highlights aviation history through the acquisition, restoration, and display of historic aircraft. The museum boasts a varied collection of over 30 American military, propeller, and jet aircraft. Exhibits documenting Sonoma County aviation history are housed in an original 1940s era fabrication shop, along with an aviation reference library. Other displays include a varied collection of about two dozen military aircraft from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, including an A-4 Skyhawk, a Lockheed D-21 drone, an F-16 Fighting Falcon, an F-105

Thunderchief, an F-106A Delta Dart, and a UH-1 Iroquois (“Huey”) helicopter. It also has a kit-built Bede BD-5, the world’s lightest jet aircraft, and a handbuilt replica of civilian aviation’s most famous historic aerobatic airplane, a Pitts Special S1. PCAM offers classes on aviation history and principles of flight, conducts an aviation summer school and merit badge in aviation program, and has an aviation Master Storyteller for story time. An annual 2-day weekend air show in August, Wings over Wine Country, draws over 20,000 visitors for events featuring military jet demo teams, skydiving, hanggliding, biplane aerobatics, and tours of all the museum’s airplanes, including an A-26 Invader attack bomber, the only aircraft to see combat in WW II, Korea, and Vietnam.

JOHN ASH & CO. AT VINTNERS RESORT A pioneer in farm-to-table dining, John Ash & Co. at Vintners Resort in Santa Rosa laid the culinary foundation that has evolved into today’s world-renown wine country cuisine. The rustic Front Room is a popular happy-hour spot with its menu of bar snacks, while the Tuscan-inspired dining room boasts plush booths, a stone fireplace, and Italian landscapes on the walls. Better yet, patio dining offers guests a romantic setting where you are just steps from a vineyard. You can watch families of quail or on occasion jack rabbits jetting about under the vines. The patio can be busy, but many tables feel secluded as your back is to other diners and any chitchat fades in favor of savoring the sculpted beauty of the acres of vines stretching out in front of you. The patio is set up to enjoy cooler seasons too with multiple heat lamps, accordion glass windows, potted flowers and white string lights strung on overhead beams.

REASONS FOR OPTIMISM BY KEVIN STOLL

B

ECAUSE 2020 HAS PRESENTED more than its fair share of challenges to our community—a global pandemic, shelter in place orders, rollercoaster reopenings and closures, businesses closing and economic recession, power shut-offs, and another wildfire season—it’s understandable that many of us are exhausted and on-edge. But our community has proven to be resilient time and again. We’ve always found a way to channel our resilience LA QUINTA INN and move forward toward a brighter future. So, if you’re feeling on the downslope of this rollercoaster ride, take heart in these positive signs for our community. New Businesses Are Opening and Others Are Expanding

4TH STREET SOCIAL CLUB

First-time restauranteurs, Melissa and Chris Matteson, opened 4th Street Social Club in downtown Santa Rosa where the energetic 30-somethings are betting that their affordable, plant-centric comfort food will be an instant favorite for omnivores, vegetarians and vegans alike. Right around the corner on 5th Street is where the owners of Mi Ranchito opened their second Sonoma County location in September. And there have been a host of others including former downtown favorite Flavor Bistro reopening in Sebastopol, Blue Ridge Kitchen popping up in The Barlow, and Grossman’s Noshery & Bar launching just across the street from Railroad Square to name a few. Local Businesses Embracing Change and Each Other Entrepreneurs are a plucky lot—instead of succumbing to uncertainty, local business owners are choosing to embrace change. B Fernandez, owner of Studio B Creative, has experienced this can-do attitude firsthand from her clients. “About a month into quarantine, they understood that business-as-usual was gone, but got excited about remaking themselves,” she says. It’s created more of “a partnership of getting through this together and being even stronger on the other side.”

Recovery and Rebuilding—Homes and Hotels There’s been significant progress in rebuilding homes lost to the 2017 Sonoma Complex Fires. In Coffey Park, 95% are either completely rebuilt or under construction, and every week sees more families moving in. What’s more, the neighborhood’s beloved public space, Coffey Neighborhood Park, was beautifully rebuilt and reopened at the end of October. Similarly, recent hotel openings have AC HOTEL BY MARRIOTT returned lodging capacity back to pre-October 2017 levels—capacity that is critical in supporting our hospitality and tourism industries. La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Santa Rosa Sonoma is the latest addition to Santa Rosa’s booming hotel scene, adding ASAWA FOUNTAIN 100 rooms with a contemporary design including beautiful balconies and luxurious amenities. A few months earlier, the AC Marriott Hotel just off Railroad Square added 142 rooms in September. Meanwhile, other area hotels are sprucing up with renovations in preparation for tourism ramping up again, including Hotel La Rose, Motel 6 Santa Rosa, and the retro jewel, the Flamingo Resort. The Heart of Our City Coupled with this summer’s Open & Out program in downtown, the area in and around Courthouse Square has seen beautification upgrades implemented and a couple large-scale projects on the horizon. The Asawa Fountain is slated to be returned to the square as a joint project by the City of Santa Rosa and Downtown District, and the Imagine Art in Courthouse Square project is set to bring permanent public art to add color and vibrancy to the heart of our city. Thankfully, 2020 is almost in the history books—and it certainly will go down in history—and the glimmer of a less complicated 2021 is on the horizon. And one day soon, we’ll be able to look back and say that because of our community’s resilience, we never lost hope and kept working toward the brighter days ahead.
