A Message from the CEO A Message from the CEO
Our company pays the individual, not the team, for performance, that is why we pay incentives based on individual performance. Why? Because despite the noblest of intentions toward individual performers, team based financial incentives inevitably rewards slackers and punishes producers. Team measures are unfair to our sales associates 100 percent of the time, because a team incentive for individual performers risks confusing and discouraging personal excellence. Managers, however, are rewarded based on store net income each month, which is considered indicativeoftheirindividualperformance.
This lesson dates back to the early 1620's and the Pilgrims. After landing on Plymouth Rock, they lived in a commonwealth setting whereby everyone "benefitted" from what the community produced. Distributions were based on need, and caused an unmitigated disaster leading to widespread starvation. This system created confusion and discontent. Young men that were the most able fit for labor, did not feel it was fair that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men's wives and children without any reimbursement. In other words, poor personal incentives produced little food and raised animosity within the Colony. To remedy the matter, the Colony devised a new means of production using private property assigned to each family for personal cultivation; what you grew, you kept, traded, or sold. The results speak for themselves, thechangehadverygoodsuccess, foritmadeallhandsveryindustriousandtheythrived.
Given today's socioeconomic and political landscape of entitlements, one can only wonder if the Pilgrims' colonial lesson has been lost. This system of balanced competition and cooperation works for our sales associates, too. Every sales associate has a cash drawer from which he or she conducts and grows business. Sure, our people like to compete against each other, but only in a way of spurring themselves to even bigger victories. Competition tends to bring out the best in people, yet each team member knowingly depends on others to service their customers, maintain the store, and create a welcoming environment. They need one another in order to provide a culture of winning. Managers supervise the overall effectiveness of a store. They are paid on the performance of the team, and they must keep the team functioning. They are charged with holdingtogetherindividualswhoworkinthesamestorebutoutofaprivatedrawer.
Instead of having group financial incentives, a compensation plan that mimics a failed communal system of production, we embrace the importance of personal productivity on the front lines of our stores.

DIAMOND NEWS FLASH!
Retail Jewelry Stores Sell “USED” Diamonds as NEW!
Have you ever had a customer say they would not buy an engagement ring from a Pawn store because they don’t want a “used”diamondorwanttowearsomebodyelse’s“badluck”? When such statements are made, it is time to educate the customer and close thesale.
Thefirststepistoremindthecustomerthatalmostalljewelrystores havediamondexchangeandupgradeprograms.
Then explain that when retail customers trade in their diamond for reasons ranging from anniversaries, holidays, divorce, broken engagements, death, upgrades...etc, thesediamondsgobackinto theirretailsystemtoberesold–ASNEW!
In my personal experience of selling diamonds in retail for 20 years, I have sold many of the same diamonds multiple times to multiple people that took advantage of the trade in policy – and they never knew they were pre-owned. This is legal due to the federal government says that there is no such thing as a used diamond!
U.S. Federal & many international laws state that diamonds are not considered used and do not require disclosure if a diamond has been previously sold or worn. The main reason is because diamonds are the hardest natural substance known to man and they are all billions to millions of years old. Therefore, there is no way to know if a diamond is “worn”or“old”.
Another way pre-owned diamonds end up in retail stores besides trade-ins, are through Dealers who buy our diamonds and sell to wholesalers that then sell it back to retail stores for resale. In this case, noteventheretailjewelerknowsthatthediamondispre-owned.
If you share these facts with the customer who is concerned about a “used” diamond, now they know they can buy it directly from us for less…or they can go to a Retail store and pay more than double forthesamequalitydiamondthatisverylikelypre-owned!
If they insist on a “new” engagement ring, sell them the diamond they like & have our jeweler put it in a new setting, exactly what the retailerdoesandlegallycallsNEW!
