Security Tips When Selling Jewelry

Showing jewelry should be fun and exciting for you and the customer! At the same time, you must be aware of what is going on around you.

Meet and Greet

By greeting each customer and making immediate eye contact, you will help your legitimate customers feel valued, while making would-be thieves feel uncomfortable, thus abandoning any plans they may have had to steal merchandise.

One-on-One

Keeping your focus on one customer at a time while at the jewelry counter helps avoid theft by reducing the opportunity. It can be challenging during busy sales periods with so many customers, but it is important for service and security.

Show One Item at a Time

Show only one jewelry item to a customer at a time to reduce the risk of “grab-and-run” thefts. Be especially careful if a customer only wants to see the highest-priced jewelry pieces or seems preoccupied.

When showing items that are priced at $500 and up, be sure to get the customer’s photo ID. If the customer questions this request, respond by telling them “Our insurance company requires it” . Before taking out a second piece of jewelry, be sure to return the first piece of jewelry to the showcase and close the showcase.

Turn The Key

Make it a habit to lock your jewelry showcase after removing or returning jewelry items. Never leave your jewelry showcases open or unattended. Never set down your showcase keys and consider using wrist holders to avoid costly mistakes.

Keep Your Eyes Open

If using a loupe when showing jewelry, make sure to use the proper technique: keep both eyes open and facing forward, not down. By doing this, you will see the diamond better and in your peripheral vision you will be able to see everything going on around you. Thieves look for your eyes to close so they can reach around to the back of the open showcase or lift the showcase glass. Don’t give potential thieves the opportunity.
