The hot wire laser cladding process uses a welding power supply to preheat wire and a laser to melt and bond the material to a metal substrate can achieve deposition rates similar to arc processes but with much lower heat inputs. The process at the same time can deposit greater than twice the material that laser/powder systems can at the same laser power with almost no wasted powder. The presentation will review the mechanics of the process and the justification for its use through various economic models.
