The British are coming Tribute bands Abbey Road, Led Zepagain kick off Beatlesfest 2010

T

Abbey Road - Week 8

his week’s Twilight Dance Series concert is more than just a free show at the Santa Monica Pier — it’s the kick-off event for a three-day festival that will prove that Beatles-mania is alive and well half a century after the legendary rock band formed.

Called “Beatlesfest 2010,” the event will get going Thursday afternoon with Beatles karaoke, Beatles movies, Beatles memorabilia and scores of other Fab Four-themed attractions at the pier.

Famed Beatles cover band Abbey Road will open the Twilight Dance Series concert at 7 p.m. that night with an acoustic set, followed by a louder, electric performance from Led Zepagain, a popular L.A.-based act that pays tribute to that other iconic band that was part of the British Invasion.

“Having Beatles music all day is great, but people also like the fact you still have your variety,” said festival producer Fred Zermeno.

A staple of L.A.-area clubs, Led Zepagain is a premier tribute to the famous group responsible for classics “Stairway to Heaven” and “Whole Lotta Love,” among many others.

The weekend, though, will be all about the Beatles.

Friday and Saturday will feature more ways for fans to soak in the group’s tunes, with Beatles-themed fun at the pier both days from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and a performance of “Ticket to Ride,” a musical that tells the story of the Beatles,

by Abbey Road at Barnum Hall on Saturday.

The musical dramatizes key moments in the life of the band, covering the Beatles’ first meeting with soon-to-be manager Brian Epstein at The Cavern Club, their performance on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Abbey Road

sessions, their Shea Stadium concert and their final live show on the roof of their Apple Records headquarters.

With numerous costume changes and live performances of 33 Beatles hits, the show is a whirlwind tour that lets fans experience the band firsthand.

“It gives them a chance to be there with the Beatles,” said Andy Nagle, the booking agent for Abbey Road.

Tickets for the show are available for $25 from Ticketmaster and at the door.

Bealtesfest is coming to Santa Monica after a successful run at the Queen Mary in Long Beach last year. Producers said Santa Monica, the “city by the sea,” made a perfect location for the festival.

“It makes sense to be in Santa Monica, with the crowds, the public transportation and just the historic aspect of the pier itself,” Zermeno said.

A many as 50,000 attendees are expected at the pier during the three-day festival, with the Beatles’ enduring appeal sure to bring fans of all ages.

“We’re just amazed by the draw that the Beatles have across generations,” Nagle said. “You see 7-year-old kids that sing along and senior citizens. It’s really a fascinating phenomenon.”

Unlike many other leading Beatles cover bands, Abbey Road comprises members in their 20s, so the group’s look and sound takes audiences back to the early days of a band whose music swept the planet and changed music forever.

While this year is a trial run for the festival in Santa Monica, promoters have high hopes the event will grow in popularity as they prepare for a blowout celebration in 2012, the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ invasion of America.

Spectator guide Parking, seating and general FAQ made easy Parking Parking is available in the 1550 Pacific Coast Highway Lot, on a first-come, firstserved basis. There is no parking permitted on the Pier Parking Deck.

There are also a number of city structures located in nearby Downtown Santa Monica.

First aid/lost and found If you require first aid or assistance, please visit the pier booth/tent and we will contact the proper authority. If it is an emergency, please call 911. The lost and found will also be located at that location.

Weather It never gets really cold, but after the sun goes down it can sometimes get a bit chilly requiring only a sweater or light jacket. It's always a good idea to have something to throw on just in case.

Bike valet There is a free bike valet located next to the beach bike path just south of the Santa Monica Pier.

Seating Seating is not provided. You are welcome to bring beach chairs and blankets and sit on the pier deck or the beach. We ask that you bring low beach chairs so not to block the view of other concert-goers. Many people do sit on the sand at the beach below the pier deck.

Alcohol consumption is not permitted on public spaces; however, there are several full service bars on the pier and there will be a wine garden at each of the concerts.

Pets Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

2010 Twilight Dance Series Week 9, Sept. 2 Presented by Bayside District

Dr. John & the Lower 911 New Orleans Icon An icon of American music born in New Orleans, Dr. John is indelibly linked to the traditions and singularity of the city’s musical and cultural heritage. Mac Rebennack burst onto the rock ‘n’ roll scene in the late 1960s as Dr. John, the Night Tripper, merging the R&B, voodoo rhythms and chants of his native New Orleans to create a persona perfect for the psychedelic era. Over the years he’s thrown in jazz, classic American songbook, zydeco, boogie woogie and rock into the mix.

In 1972 he recorded “Dr. John’s Gumbo,” an album covering several New Orleans standards with only one original. “Gumbo” is considered a cornerstone in New Orleans music.

“In 1972, I recorded ‘Gumbo,’ an album that was both a tribute to and my interpretation of the music I had grown up with in New Orleans in the 1940s and 1950s. I tried to keep a lot of the little changes that were characteristic of New Orleans, while working my own funknology on piano and guitar,” he said.

The next year, with local legend Allen Toussaint producing and The Meters backing, Dr. John released the seminal New Orleans funk album “In the Right Place.” In the same way that “Gumbo” began his career-long reputation as an esteemed interpreter of New Orleans standards, “In the Right Place” established Dr. John as New Orleans’ preeminent ambassador.

On this closing night of our 26th season, we promise you that you are in “The Right Place” for “Such a Night!”
