Making waves Surf guitar rocks the Twilight Dance Series Surf guitar comes to its rightful home this Thursday at the world famous Santa Monica Pier. The Twilight Dance Series is proud to present three historic surf bands during Week 7 with Slacktone leading the way.

SLACKTONE Widely recognized as America's best surf instrumental band, Slacktone has a sound that is a hyper-kinetic mix of melody, speed and jaw-dropping technical skill. Formed in Los Angeles in 1995 from a group of surf band veterans, Slacktone has since released four albums and toured Europe eight times, but when it comes to their surf-roots it's Santa Monica that they call home.

“Slacktone playing the Santa Monica Pier is a dream gig! Big, surf guitar sounds, with some of the best beach culture, and imagery to be found anywhere in the world. Stoked!” says, guitarist and songwriter Dave Wronski.

The band consists of Wronski; a career studio musician who has been featured in Guitar Player magazine, drummer Dusty Watson who tours with Dick Dale, Agent Orange and The Supersuckers and bassist Sam Bolle who also tours with Dick Dale and Agent Orange.

Slacktone's music has been featured on TV shows like the WB's “Summerland” and “MTV Real People.”

FROM PAGE 6 In '61 they formed the Belairs and recorded “Mr. Moto.” Johnson recalls, “The surfing craze had just caught on in L.A.'s South Bay and surfers who showed up at our dances said, ‘Wow! Your music sounds just like it feels out there on the waves. You oughta call it Surf Music,’ and I remember thinking, What a novel idea.” Shortly thereafter “Moto” became one of the first “surf” hits.

His innovative, lyrical playing style led to numerous studio credits. He's played on records by The Hondells, Davie Allan, Bobby Sherman and Sonny & Cher.

The Eliminators have led the way for the resurgence of instrumental surf music that was popular during the early ‘60s by staying true to the sound while giving their music and shows a modern twist.

All five band members come from Orange County and are longtime surfers who were brought together through common interests; surfing, the love and respect for the ocean, and the desire to bring the authentic sound of the early ‘60s surf bands back to the forefront of the music industry. They pride themselves on surf authenticity — that means using Fender guitars and blonde "Fender Showman" amps to give their music that unmistakable unique surf music sound.

TDS survival guide Use these tips to help navigate this year’s concert series TDS store

Seating

Get your very own piece of this year’s Twilight Dance Series. The TDS Concert Store features T-shirts, Klean Canteens and glow sticks among other goodies. All purchases go to support the Twilight Dance Series.

Seating is not provided. You are welcome to bring beach chairs and blankets and sit on the pier deck or the beach. We ask that you bring low beach chairs. Many people do sit on the sand at the beach below the pier deck.

Tickets, cost

Food and drinks

No ticket or reservation is necessary for the concerts. And all of the concerts are free.

However, should you find yourself wanting to express your appreciation for the concerts you are welcome to make a tax deductible contribution to the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation either by donating online at santamonicapier.org or in person at one of the concerts by visiting the pier booth.

Alcohol consumption is not permitted in public spaces in Santa Monica. However, there are several full-service bars on the pier.

Food is permitted.

What time do the concerts begin and end?

7 p.m. — 10 p.m.

Parking Parking is available in the 1550 Pacific Coast Highway Lot, on a first-come, firstserved basis. There is no parking permitted on the Pier Parking Deck.

There are also a number of city structures located in nearby Downtown Santa Monica.

Bike valet There is a free bike valet located next to the beach bike path just south of the Santa Monica Pier. It’s the reward for being kind to the environment.

First aid/lost and found If you require first aid or assistance, please visit the pier booth/tent and we will contact the proper authority. If it is an emergency, please call 911. The lost and found will also be located at that location.

Pets Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

Time for wine “Sonoma on the Deck” will be located on the pier overlooking the sand, where guests can enjoy a selection of specialty wine and beer, see the concerts in a relaxed environment, all while taking in the sunset overlooking the Santa Monica Bay. “Sonoma on the Deck” will feature locallyowned, award-winning Solsticio Wines from Argentina, California labels, specialty beer and more! Beer and wine will be offered for $5 and $8 respectively. Must be 21 years of age and present an I.D. “Sonoma on the Deck” is a perfect place to enjoy a summer’s night with great wine, friends and entertainment!

Volunteer The pier is always looking for a little help with the dance series.

Volunteers are needed to help with raising funds, assisting the crew and providing hospitality for artists.

Schwee Miguel and Milongatron Lead vocalist, musical director, and multi-instrumentalist Schwee Miguel is back from Buenos Aires for another extended residency in Los Angeles, teaching dance and performing live Argentine tango music at milongas and festivals around North America.

Schwee Miguel’s Milongatron features a phalanx of Argentine virtuosi including violinist Pablo Hopenhayn, polymorphous omniphone Pablo Goldstein, and bassist Oscar Lomuto, torch-bearer of the golden-age orchestra that bore his family name. Donald Harrison Electric Band Donald Harrison is called one of the most important musicians of the new millennium by CBS Sunday Morning.

A list of his accomplishments shows that he has developed into a musical category unto himself. OneWest Bank offers a helping hand or the first time, the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation will have a little help producing its annual Twilight Dance Series.

This year, the PRC has teamed up with OneWest Bank. the largest Southern California-based bank, to produce this year’s slate of 10 concerts.

“It is a great relationship and we’re so excited about it,” said Steve Gibson, interim executive director of the PRC. “The Twilight Dance Series is about giving back to the community and it’s been a nice ‘coming together’ with OneWest Bank on the project.”

The presenting sponsorship came about during casual conversations between the president of OneWest Bank and Santa Monica City Manager Rod Gould.

“It was over something completely different,” Gibson

said. “OneWest Bank was interested in being more involved in the community, and the city manager suggested we get in touch. That initial conversation led to others which made this sponsorship a reality.”

OneWest Bank is also extremely pleased with their involvement and partnership as well as the exposure that the Twilight Dance Series will afford them. The 10-concert season is part of their organized effort to support local initiatives that contribute to a more vibrant California.

The Twilight Dance Series has been an annual fixture on the Santa Monica Pier since 1983 when it began with “Save the Pier Week” and has since become a hallmark of the Santa Monica community.

“We believe the 27th Annual Twilight Dance Series will be a fantastic concert production and will please the Santa Monica community and concert fans,” said Kent Smith, chair of the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation board.

“Free summer concerts on the pier have become a cultural and historical phenomena and we made a collective effort to deliver the quality and community experience that has come to define this cultural institution.”
