Soulive - Week 6

Getting all funked up Soulive, Breakestra bring a soulful R&B flavor to the TDS

F

unk/jazz band Soulive has been around for over a decade now, but don’t go putting labels on this trio. Brothers Alan and Neal Evans, along with guitarist Eric Krasno, are in the business of creating music that not only spans different genres, but also is constantly evolving.

That’s why even those familiar with the group should expect some new twist at Soulive’s performance at the Santa Monica Pier on Thursday night as part of the Twilight Dance Series.

“I think it’s always changing, and it’s changed a lot over the years,” says Neal Evans of the band’s sound. “And it continues to change. We’ve been playing some of these tunes for 11 years now, and they sound completely different than when we played them 10 years ago or five years ago.”

Soulive traces its origins back to 1999, when the Evans brothers and Krasno sat down together in a home studio in Woodstock, N.Y., to record an innocent jam session. That little foray spawned the trio’s first album, “Get Down!” and the birth of Soulive, with Alan manning the drums, Neal pumping out notes on the Hammond B3 organ — an electric organ that first became popular in the 1960s and 1970s as a standard keyboard instrument for jazz, blues and rock music — and Krasno riffing on the guitar.

“We never came together to say, ‘We want to be a band that plays this type of music,’” says Neal Evans. “We’d never sit down and try to formulaically make an album or try and sound like anything else.”

There’s certainly little that’s formulaic about Soulive. Drawing inspiration from Jimmy Smith, Groove Holmes and the other great soul-jazz organ trios of the 1960s and 1970s, the band’s catchy, upbeat grooves can be heard in multiple forms — soul, funk, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, rock, R&B, blues — oftentimes all in a single album. Soulive has brought saxophonists and a trumpeter onto its recordings and even experimented with vocalist Toussaint Yeshua from 2006 to 2007 before deciding to go back to the original trio.

The trio’s eclectic stylings have also attracted attention from a wide range of artists — from Dave Matthews Band to Common to renowned jazz guitarist John Scofield — who have either played with Soulive on stage or made guest appearances on albums. Within the band’s first three years in existence, Soulive had already churned out five national tours, one of which saw them opening for the Rolling Stones.

“I never thought I’d see the Stones play,” says Neal Evans, who admits, even as someone who is seldom starstruck, it was “pretty wild” performing on the same stage as

the legendary rockers. “I mean, how many people even ever think they would meet them?”

The long list of musicians Soulive has collaborated with stands as a testament to the band’s versatility. In 2000, Bruce Lundvall, recognizing the trio’s talent, signed Soulive to his iconic jazz label, Blue Note Records, home to such household names as Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Norah Jones.

Six years later, Soulive was one of the first acts signed to the newly-reactivated Stax Records, becoming in the process a part of the soul tradition pioneered by Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, and Sam and Dave.

While Soulive has remained committed, in the midst of creating 12 albums and playing in places as far away as Japan, to continually reinventing itself, one thing hasn’t changed: The band is still one of the best live performances around.

“It’s pretty wild and interesting to see the three of us up on stage,” Neal Evans says.

“It’s literally like a wall of sound just from three guys up there.”

Indeed, Soulive’s on-stage expertise has allowed it to rise to a prominence rarely enjoyed nowadays by other funk groups. Still, that hasn’t stopped them from staying true to their roots, simply going into the studio and finding new ways to generate new types of music.

Their latest product? Released earlier this

year, “Rubber Soulive,” a tribute to some classic Beatles tunes — complete with Soulive’s own funky renditions, of course.

Breakestra Hip-Hop Funk Beats Break: As in “breakbeat.” That 10second slice of percussive magic in the middle of a funk song that, when looped together by progressive South Bronx DJs in the 1970s, became the basis of the hip-hop movement. Arkestra: Out-there jazzer Sun Ra’s funkafied concept of the stuffy classical orchestra. Flip the script and you wind up with a unique definition of the Los Angeles-based ensemble known as The Breakestra.

Formed by Dr. Miles Tackett, “Musicman,” in 1996, they began as the house band for the legendary club called The Breaks. The band is rooted in deep funk, soul, jazz fever and musical friendships. A Breakestra show is about dancing and swinging, musicians on stage getting loose and playing serious grooves. Breakestra has a way of invigorating breakbeats, paving the way for the funkily naïve to embrace the rhythmic revolution that James Brown kicked off more than 30 years ago!

Parking is available in the 1550 Pacific Coast Highway Lot, on a first-come, firstserved basis. There is no parking permitted on the Pier Parking Deck.

There are also a number of city structures located in nearby Downtown Santa Monica.

Bike valet There is a free bike valet located next to the beach bike path just south of the Santa Monica Pier.

Seating Seating is not provided. You are welcome to bring beach chairs and blankets and sit on the pier deck or the beach. We ask that you bring low beach chairs so not to block the view of other concert-goers. Many people do sit on the sand at the beach below the pier deck.

Alcohol consumption is not permitted on public spaces; however, there are several full service bars on the pier and there will be a wine garden at each of the concerts.

First aid/lost and found

Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

If you require first aid or assistance, please visit the pier booth/tent and we will contact the proper authority. If it is an emergency, please call 911. The lost and found will also be located at that location.

Smoking Smoking is permitted in designated areas only. There are two designated smoking areas in the general vicinity of the concert.

One area is designated in the south east corner and one in the south west corner.

Tickets No ticket or reservation is necessary for the concerts. And all of the concerts are free. However, should you find yourself wanting to express your appreciation for the concerts you are welcome to make a tax deductible contribution the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation either by donating online at santamonicapier.org or in person at one of the concerts by going to the pier booth.

Bettye LaVette has mostly recently made news in her nearly 50 year career with her May 2010 release of, “Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook,” which brings the British Invasion home to its American R&B roots and features LaVette’s raw emotional renderings of compositions by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. For those who missed LaVette’s powerfully memorable three night run at the Hollywood Bowl earlier this year, another opportunity presents itself to see this force of nature. Ms. LaVette show will include material spanning her entire career including the “British Rock Songbook.”

Tom Nolan Band Blues, R&B and Soul One word sums up the Tom Nolan Band’s mission: “Dance!” Long-time local favorites, TNB boasts a world class rhythm section, great singers and soloist, and an intense stage show. TNB brings people to their feet playing a mix of originals and classic dance tunes which blend soul, blues, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll.

In 2008, the band released its seventh CD, “Live at Rusty’s” to much acclaim. You may have seen them at a community concert, blues or jazz festivals around the state, or playing at Rusty’s Surf Ranch right here on the Santa Monica Pier, where they have been in residence for 15 years.

The Tom Nolan Band lends their talents, support and efforts to Habitat for Humanity, Katrina Relief, the Concern Foundation, the MS Foundation, the Red Cross, Heal the Bay, and many Los Angeles schools. TNB continues to bring joy and fun to the California music scene. In a word, “Dance!”

Week 8, Aug. 26 Presented by Beatlesfest Beatlesfest, a three-day tribute that began five years ago, is proud to be a part of the Twilight Dance Series this summer! Abbey Road will open the night with an acoustic set of the Beatles, followed by Los Angeles-based Led Zepagain, as part of the British Invasion.

Throughout the day on Thursday, there will be Beatles karaoke, Beatles movies, memorabilia, the history of the Beatles, photo opportunities, food, the kids’ zone at Pacific Park, celebrity appearances, radio personalities, raffles and much more.

This will be followed by a Tribute to the Beatles on Friday and Saturday at the Pier with live entertainment throughout the day. The free festival will be open at 10 a.m. and run until 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday night Aug. 28, the award-winning musical ‘Ticket to Ride’ featuring Abbey Road will perform at the Barnum Hall at Santa Monica High. Tickets are available at all Ticket Master locations.

World Mardi Gras Music

An icon of American music born in New Orleans, Dr. John is indelibly linked to the traditions and singularity of the city’s musical and cultural heritage.

Mac Rebennack burst onto the rock ‘n’ roll scene in the late 1960s as Dr. John, the Night Tripper, merging the R&B, voodoo rhythms and chants of his native New Orleans to create a persona perfect for the psychedelic era. Over the years he’s thrown in jazz, classic American songbook, zydeco, boogie woogie and rock into the mix.

In 1972 he recorded “Dr. John’s Gumbo,” an album covering several New Orleans standards with only one original.

“Gumbo” is considered a cornerstone in New Orleans music.

“In 1972, I recorded ‘Gumbo,’ an album that was both a tribute to and my interpretation of the music I had grown up with in New Orleans in the 1940s and 1950s. I tried to keep a lot of the little changes that were characteristic of New Orleans, while working my own funknology on piano and guitar,” he said.

The next year, with local legend Allen Toussaint producing and The Meters backing, Dr. John released the seminal New Orleans funk album “In the Right Place.” In the same way that “Gumbo” began his career-long reputation as an esteemed interpreter of New Orleans standards, “In the Right Place” established Dr. John as New Orleans’ preeminent ambassador.

On this closing night of our 26th season, we promise you that you are in “The Right Place” for “Such a Night!”
