Rickie Lee Jones - Week 5

Duchess of Coolsville reigns Rickie Lee Jones plays the Twilight Dance Series

T

he fifth installment of the Twilight Dance Series promises to be one of the most entertaining yet as iconic hipster Rickie Lee Jones takes the stage to perform a compilation of songs both old and new. Noted for her most famous ditty “Chuck E’s in Love” the Duchess of Coolsville — thusly dubbed by Time Magazine in 1979 when she appeared on “Saturday Night Live” amidst garbage cans — quickly rose to fame, selling out shows at Carnegie Hall. Born on Nov. 8, 1954, in Chicago, Ill. to parents with peripatetic childhoods: Jones’ father, Richard, lived from hand to mouth in a number of transient hotels, riding the rails and wandering the country; her mother, Bettye, was an orphan. Jones described her family as “lower-middle-class-hillbilly-hipster.” Her music career was jump-started by her father who taught her to sing and perform. Jones also bit by the wanderlust-bug, traveled the country in a Kerouac-esque fashion. By the time she was 19, Jones was living in Los Angeles, waiting tables and occasionally playing music in out-of-the way coffee houses and bars. All the while, she continued to develop her unique aesthetic: music that was sometimes spoken, often beautifully sung, emotionally accessible, but taut and complex. Jones’ Warner debut, released in 1979, won her a Grammy for Best New Artist. She

was hailed by one critic as a “highly touted new pop-jazz-singer-songwriter” and another critic as “one of the best — if not the best — artist of her generation.” In addition to the album’s brilliant songs — including the exceptional “On Saturday Afternoons in 1963,” the haunting “Last Chance Texaco,” and the popular “Chuck E’s in Love” — Jones was becoming a figure whose life was bearing a great deal of emulation by young women and men who found, in her deep and personal and idiosyncratic life and work, a model for the new generation of hipster. She was heralded as a trendsetter in dress and in lifestyle, given her by then famous relationship with two boys she helped to make famous, too: Chuck E. Weiss, a Los Angeles character, and the singer and songwriter Tom Waits, about whom Rickie has said: “We walk around the same streets, and I guess it’s primarily a jazz-motivated situation for both of us. We’re living on the jazz side.” The legendary songwriter has enjoyed an illustrious 30 year career. and admits (in a recent interview with More Than The Music) that literature often serves as inspiration. “I like books, I like the font, the feeling, the textures and of course the story and being taken into the language of the author. Sometimes they find their way quite directly into my work, other times a line or two here

or there inspires me.” For those who are waiting to hear some dear favorites, such as, “Danny’s All-Star Joint” and “Chuck E’s In Love.” at the upcoming show at Santa Monica Pier Jones says, “That is exactly what I will be doing.

“It will really be a walk down memory lane.” Jones is doing the songs as they were recorded, “The old way. Really having fun with the music.” She adds that she hasn’t done that in more than 20 years.

Soulive Funk Jazz Organ Trio

Soulive - Week 6

Not many bands can say they’ve recorded with such diverse artists as Chaka Khan, Dave Matthews, Talib Kweli and John Scofield. Nor can many, if any, bands lay claim to opening for The Rolling Stones on one tour and having Stevie Wonder sit in with them on the next. The enduring musical relationships the band has developed, from the aforementioned artists to Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Joshua Redman, Robert Randolph, Kenny Garrett, The Roots, Fred Wesley, Ivan Neville and so many others, speak volumes about both how versatile and popular these talented musicians are.

Breakestra Hip-Hop Funk Beats Formed by Dr. Miles Tackett, “Musicman,” in 1996, they began as the house band for the legendary club called The Breaks. The band is rooted in deep funk, soul, jazz fever and musical friendships. A Breakestra show is about dancing and swinging, musicians on stage getting loose and playing serious grooves. Breakestra has a way of invigorating breakbeats, paving the way for the funkily naïve to embrace the rhythmic revolution that James Brown kicked off more than 30 years ago!

Week 7, Aug. 19

Mick Taylor Legendary Guitarist/Former Rolling Stone As one of the most admired and respected guitarists in blues, R&B and rock music, Mick Taylor’s distinctive, elegant slide guitar work graces some of the key albums in rock ‘n’ roll history. Mick Taylor’s biggest impact and recognition came when he joined the ranks of illustrious alumni of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, accepting the Rolling Stones’ offer to replace founding member Brian Jones in 1969. The Stones had already established their reputation as “the greatest rock ’n’ roll band” in the world, having just released the classic “Beggar’s Banquet.” Taylor quickly added his imprint to the Stones and was present for the legendary concert tours through 1974.

Tom Nolan Band Blues, R&B and Soul One word sums up the Tom Nolan Band’s mission: “Dance!” Long-time local favorites, TNB boasts a world class rhythm section, great singers and soloist, and an intense stage show. TNB brings people to their feet playing a mix of originals and classic dance tunes which blend soul, blues, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll.

Week 8, Aug. 26 Presented by Beatlesfest

Beatlesfest Beatlesfest, a three-day tribute that began five years ago, is proud to be a part of the Twilight Dance Series this summer! Abbey Road will open the night with an acoustic set of the Beatles, followed by Los Angeles-based Led Zepagain, as part of the British Invasion.

Week 9, Sept. 2 Presented by Bayside District

Dr. John & the Lower 911 New Orleans Icon An icon of American music born in New Orleans, Dr. John is indelibly linked to the traditions and singularity of the city’s musical and cultural heritage. Mac Rebennack burst onto the rock ‘n’ roll scene in the late 1960s as Dr. John, the Night Tripper, merging the R&B, voodoo rhythms and chants of his native New Orleans to create a persona perfect for the psychedelic era. Over the years he’s thrown in jazz, classic American songbook, zydeco, boogie woogie and rock into the mix.
