The Bangles

Flashback to the ‘80s The Bangles bring a taste of nostalgia to the pier f you’ve got a hankering for the most fun, easy-to-dance-to upbeat ‘80s music, be sure to run, not walk “like an Egyptian” to the Santa Monica Pier to see The Bangles on July 14.

The Bangles, who are coming out with a new album, “Sweetheart of the Sun,” this September, were famously part of the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene, which featured groups that played a mixture of 1960s-influenced folk-rock and jangle pop with more modern punk/garage band undertones.

The Bangles have had chart-topping hits such as “Manic Monday,” which charted at No. 2 on Billboard, “Going Down To Liverpool,” and of course the iconic smash hit “Walk Like An Egyptian.”

Susanna Hoffs, one of the vocalists and guitarists for the group recalls the “phone call” that started it all; a response to an ad that Hoffs put in the paper, in the “musician seeking musician” section. Hoffs went to meet the girl who answered her ad, but they didn’t click musically. The girl’s roommate however was Vicki Peterson (vocals/guitars) and Hoffs soon discovered, she and Peterson shared a love of ‘60s music — The Beatles, The Byrds and bands of that era.

“The music of that time period is the glue that holds us together. We were little kids in the ‘60s and all those great songs really affected us,” said Hoffs.

Vicki’s sister Debbi Peterson rounded out the group as the drummer and then in 1983, when bassist Annette Zilinskas left to focus on solo work, Michelle Steele joined them

and the group started to gain momentum.

Their forthcoming album, “Sweetheart of the Sun,” has that same retro feel.

“Even though we are associated with the ‘80s, it was the ‘60s sound of jangley guitars that drove our band,” Hoffs said.

The album is long overdue but there’s more to it than just a long hiatus.

“We’re all moms now so we have to juggle a lot,” she said. “It’s hard enough to schedule your own family, then throw tour dates in on tope of that.”

If there is a theme to this album it’s the band’s longtime relationship to Los Angeles and how it influenced this record.

The album features 12 new songs and a Todd Rundgren cover of “Open My Eyes” as well as a song Hoffs wrote in the ‘90s called, “Under A Cloud,” which Hoffs explains is about coping with depression.

“It’s like you’re in a perfect paradise, here in Los Angeles with the sun shining 365 days a year but you’re sort of under a cloud because you can’t get away from that sense of dread and anxiety, you can’t get out from under the cloud,” she added.

There are a lot of songs from the new record that will be worked into the set at the Twilight Dance Series, but Hoffs assures that “we will, of course be playing all our hits from the ‘80s and a smattering of different things from different Bangles records.”

As for the pier show, we have Hoffs’ mother to thank for being a conduit to the concert’s promoter, Martin Fleischmann.

Hoffs’ mother ran into Fleischmann, one of Hoffs’ childhood friends, learned about the

event and promptly e-mailed her daughter who jumped at the chance to play.

“I’m really excited about this show. To have grown up in Los Angeles and to get to play on the Santa Monica Pier is like a fantasy,” Hoffs said.

All the members of The Bangles are from Los Angeles and Hoffs, who grew up in Brentwood and Santa Monica, is a selfproclaimed, “Westsider.”

“I love the whole vibe of Santa Monica, love that you can walk everywhere,” Hoffs said “[The Twilight Dance Series] looks like such a fun party; like a really great community event.”

Caracol Opening for The Bangles is Caracol. Her music is built on raw emotion and is a unique blend of American folk, old Jamaican rocksteady, with a singer-songwriter and a vintage ‘50s feel. She uses sounds of the ukulele, autoharp, vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar to create an indie pop vibe.

This Canadian singer presents her first solo release “L’arbre Aux Parfums,” a more mature, personal and introspective album.

Her lyrics, written in both French and English, explore the darker side of human emotion; SEE WEEK 2 PAGE 7

First aid/lost and found

No ticket or reservation is necessary for the concerts. And all of the concerts are free. However, should you find yourself wanting to express your appreciation for the concerts you are welcome to make a tax deductible contribution to the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation either by donating online at santamonicapier.org or in person at one of the concerts by visiting the pier booth.

If you require first aid or assistance, please visit the pier booth/tent and we will contact the proper authority. If it is an emergency, please call 911. The lost and found will also be located at that location.

Pets Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

Parking Parking is available in the 1550 Pacific Coast Highway Lot, on a first-come, firstserved basis. There is no parking permitted on the Pier Parking Deck.

It never gets really cold, but after the sun goes down it can sometimes get a bit chilly requiring only a sweater or light jacket. It’s always a good idea to have something to throw on just in case.

Seating Seating is not provided. You are welcome to bring beach chairs and blankets and sit on the pier deck or the beach. We ask that you bring low beach chairs. Many people do sit on the sand at the beach below the pier deck.

Kim Churchill It would be an understatement of gross proportions to say that 20-year-old guitarist, surfer and singer-songwriter Kim Churchill possesses drive. The Canberra-born, Merimbula-bred musician is more itinerant than a Kalahari Bushman trying to divest his people of a Coke bottle.

Tutu began playing trumpet at the age of 11 at Marina del Rey Performing Arts Magnet Middle School. Being a committed artist, he could often be heard practicing his trumpet at 4 a.m. in his garage.

This past year, Tutu put The Brothers Band together with the help of his older brother Te’Amir Yohannes Sweeney, who is also the drummer for Aloe Blacc.

Tutu Sweeney & The Brothers Band just rocked a U.S. tour opening for soul singer Aloe Blacc. At only 20 years old, he is passionate about the music he makes, and is driven to share it with the world. Tutu will soon be releasing his debut album.

Formed in 1989 in Los Angeles, Royal Crown Revue was conceived by Eddie Nichols and saxophonist Mando Dorame.

The band’s hybrid sound emerged out of their mutual admiration and love for rhythm & blues, jazz, punk, rockabilly soul, and swing, among other styles of American roots music.

RCR is often credited with starting the retro-swing revival movement of the 1990s. In 1993, they began playing regularly at The Derby, a landmark club in Los Angeles. The Duo-Tones Paul Johnson pioneered surf-instro music in the 1960s with the Belairs; his tune, “Mr. Moto,” is a genre classic.

Now, after a lifetime of prolific creativity in a style that epitomizes the form, he’s regarded as one of the genre’s leading lights.

Gil Orr was a child prodigy in the1950s playing country music on TV and radio. He took to rock ‘n’ roll in the ‘60s and joined the Chantays (with whom he still plays to this day). Gil is extremely versatile and eclectic, bringing a brilliant creativity to a wide variety of styles.

Slacktone Slacktone is widely recognized as America’s best surf instrumental band.

Their sound is a hyper-kinetic mix of melody, speed and jaw dropping technical skill. Formed in Los Angeles in 1995 from a group of surf band veterans, they have since released four albums and toured Europe eight times. The Eliminators The Eliminators have led the way in the resurgence of instrumental surf music that was popular during the early 1960s by staying true to the sound while giving the music and their show a modern twist. Their fast rising popularity is due to their incredible live performances and their TV and radio sound waves. Schwee Miguel and Milongatron Lead vocalist, musical director, and multiinstrumentalist Schwee Miguel is back from Buenos Aires for another extended residency in Los Angeles, teaching dance and performing live Argentine tango music at milongas and festivals around North America.

Schwee Miguel’s Milongatron features a phalanx of Argentine virtuosi including violinist Pablo Hopenhayn, polymorphous omniphone Pablo Goldstein, and bassist Oscar Lomuto, torch-bearer of the goldenage orchestra that bore his family name.

Born in England and bred in New Orleans, Cleary is a triple threat combining soulful vocals, masterful piano skills, and a knack for composing infectious grooves with melodic hooks and sharp lyrics. Donald Harrison Electric Band Donald Harrison is called one of the most important musicians of the new millennium

Walk it out Santa Monica Pier at the center of a busy hub hile there’s plenty to see and do on the Santa Monica Pier itself, the surrounding area offers dozens of other enticing activities and attractions. Whether you want to take a dip in the ocean, go for a ride along the beach, grab a bite or simply soak up the sun, there’s something for everyone. And the best part about it all is that you don’t need to stray far from the boardwalk. Here are some of the most popular things to do within walking distance of the pier:

Santa Monica State Beach Granted, this is an obvious one, but it bears repeating. Santa Monica State Beach stretches more than three miles along Santa Monica Bay, home to some of the best coastline views in Southern California. Swim, surf and sun — this beach has it all (during the summer, surfing is permitted only between lifeguard towers 18 and 20, and between 28 and 29). Hang around past rush hour and not only will you miss the traffic, you’ll also get to witness the spectacular sight of the sun setting over the pier.

Lifeguard stations at the beach are staffed during all daylight hours, though the lifeguard headquarters provides 24-hour assistance year-round. For more information about Santa Monica State Beach, please visit www.santamonica.com.

South Bay Bicycle Trail For a classic Santa Monica experience, hop onto the South Bay Bicycle Trail, which passes underneath the pier and stretches 22 miles along the coast — north toward Malibu and south to Torrance. You can either bring your own bike, inline skates or skateboard, or rent from any of the numerous shops lining the beach. Whatever your mode of transportation — as long as it’s wheeled and non-motorized — the trail offers scenic views of the ocean, as well as a great way to work out or just people-watch.

It’s important to note that pedestrians are not allowed on the popular path.

Mambo the night away Week 1 of the Twilight Dance Series had concertgoers dancing the night away to the sounds of Grupo Fantasma and Oscar Hernandez’ L.A. Salsa Allstars, last Thursday.
