Big Easy on the West Coast Bloomingdale's presents a Night in Treme featuring Jon Cleary's Philthy Phew f you’re sad because it’s the last show of the phenomenal Twilight Dance Series then what better way to end the season with some New Orleans funk and blues. This Thursday, Bloomingdale’s presents A Night in Treme featuring the incredible blues outfit Jon Cleary's Philthy Phew and the Donald Harrison Electric Group.

I

A mainstay at the annual Jazz and Heritage Festival, Cleary has been described by contemporary luminaries such as Bonnie Raitt as, “the ninth wonder in the world,” and according to Pamela Murray Winter of the Washington Post, “Cleary plays piano as if he’s revving up an engine and sings as if a line drawing of his behatted self were next to “soul” in Webster’s.” Not too shabby for an English born musician — although Cleary was raised in New Orleans.

In the hallowed ranks of New Orleans “piano professors,” Jon Cleary is on the tenure track. Cleary is a triple threat combining soulful vocals, masterful piano skills, and a knack for composing infectious grooves with melodic hooks and sharp lyrics. He balances performing on solo piano, with noted funk band The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, and his new trio Piano, Bass & Drums, alongside a career as a notorious hired gun with the likes of Bonnie Raitt and John Scofield.

His lineup features Lafayette-native Doug Belote on drums, multi-instrumentalist Matt Perrine, and New Orleans stalwart James Singleton who alternate gigs on upright bass, with JC on acoustic piano.

Cleary is featured on vocals and keyboards on the recently released, “Piety Street” by John Scofield & The Piety Street Band, has toured with Raitt since 1999, and has appeared on the albums “Silver Lining” and “Souls Alike.”

On these recordings, Raitt covered the Cleary originals, “Fool’s Game,” “Monkey Business,” “Unnecessarily Mercenary” and “Love on One Condition.”

Cleary has produced five recordings to date including his latest, a live recording from Sydney, Australia called “Mo Hippa,” which features a mix of the styles that inform the New Orleans’ sound — from island rhythms, to souldrenched funk jams, to Mardi Gras Indian street-parades.

Jon Cleary’s Philthy Phew For Cleary this is a chance to, “Paint from another palette, flexing a few other musical muscles, loading up with a different kind of ammunition. By virtue of the fact the guys making the music are products of the Big Easy, it goes without saying the ingredients of the music are going to include soul, jazz and funk. We’ll be squeezing Caribbean juice out of a bag of ‘back in the day’ grooves, working in a bunch of fresh new tunes and parading a second-line street beat, with some red-hot peppers to crank up the heat.”

Donald Harrison Electric Band Donald Harrison is called one of the most important musicians of the new millennium by CBS Sunday Morning.

A list of his accomplishments shows that he has developed into a musical category unto himself. TDS survival guide Use these tips to help navigate this year’s concert series TDS store

Seating

Get your very own piece of this year’s Twilight Dance Series. The TDS Concert Store features T-shirts, Klean Canteens and glow sticks among other goodies. All purchases go to support the Twilight Dance Series.

Seating is not provided. You are welcome to bring beach chairs and blankets and sit on the pier deck or the beach. We ask that you bring low beach chairs. Many people do sit on the sand at the beach below the pier deck.

Tickets, cost

Food and drinks

No ticket or reservation is necessary for the concerts. And all of the concerts are free.

However, should you find yourself wanting to express your appreciation for the concerts you are welcome to make a tax deductible contribution to the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation either by donating online at santamonicapier.org or in person at one of the concerts by visiting the pier booth.

Alcohol consumption is not permitted in public spaces in Santa Monica. However, there are several full-service bars on the pier.

Food is permitted.

What time do the concerts begin and end?

7 p.m. — 10 p.m.

Parking Parking is available in the 1550 Pacific Coast Highway Lot, on a first-come, firstserved basis. There is no parking permitted on the Pier Parking Deck.

There are also a number of city structures located in nearby Downtown Santa Monica.

Bike valet There is a free bike valet located next to the beach bike path just south of the Santa Monica Pier. It’s the reward for being kind to the environment.

First aid/lost and found If you require first aid or assistance, please visit the pier booth/tent and we will contact the proper authority. If it is an emergency, please call 911. The lost and found will also be located at that location.

Pets Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

Time for wine “Sonoma on the Deck” will be located on the pier overlooking the sand, where guests can enjoy a selection of specialty wine and beer, see the concerts in a relaxed environment, all while taking in the sunset overlooking the Santa Monica Bay. “Sonoma on the Deck” will feature locallyowned, award-winning Solsticio Wines from Argentina, California labels, specialty beer and more! Beer and wine will be offered for $5 and $8 respectively. Must be 21 years of age and present an I.D. “Sonoma on the Deck” is a perfect place to enjoy a summer’s night with great wine, friends and entertainment!

Volunteer The pier is always looking for a little help with the dance series.

Volunteers are needed to help with raising funds, assisting the crew and providing hospitality for artists.

Santa Monica Pier 101 Some of the lesser-known facts about the historic landmark Sun powered All in the plan The pier first opened on Sept. 9, 1909. It was built using a 1,600-foot-long plan designed by Edwin H. Warner.

Pacific Park featured the first ever solar-powered Ferris wheel in 1998.

Dazzling display Pier as a multi-tasker The Santa Monica Pier was originally intended to dispose of sewage into the ocean and was built at an incline to allow gravity to pull the waste out to sea. It was considered an engineering marvel of its day. It lost its distinction as a public utility in 1921 when Santa Monica entered into a new sewage treatment plan.

The Pacific Wheel that currently stands on the pier contains 160,000 solar-powered LED lights. Each light can change colors while performing elaborate displays.

Knock on wood The pier deck consists of 18,444 wooden planks and is kept together with 393,000 steel spikes.

Gone fishin

Strike!

The first fish caught on the pier was by John McCreery on Aug. 30, 1909, a week before the pier officially opened.

The pier once operated a bowling alley called Kern’s Alleys managed by Martin “Pop” Kern, a three-time U.S. bowling champion.

True inspiration Crunchy history

The cartoon "Popeye" was based on Captain Olaf C. Olsen, a retired sailor who frequented the pier and caught the eye of pier regular and cartoonist E.C. Segar.

The Fish n’ Chips café once made its own potato chips right on the pier.

Friends in high places

Charlie Chaplain was one of the first to moor his yacht at the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor when it opened in 1934.

Walk all over town

The Santa Monica Pier has been hit with many storms, the most infamous being the storms of 1983 that completely destroyed the west-end fishing deck and the businesses located there.

Artist Carl Cheng’s sculpture “Walk on LA” — a giant rolling pin with the city’s structures and freeways — has sat proudly on the beach north of the pier since 1988.

Iconic symbol

In June 1972 the City Council unanimously voted to tear down the pier. The public was so outraged that when the council overturned their vote in 1973, even the carousel horses made a statement. A sign above the merry-go-round thanks the city for keeping the pier, signed by all 46 horses.

The pier's world famous sign was originally created to promote the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor. Although the harbor is gone, the sign is an historic landmark and cannot be removed.

The first Cirque du Soleil performance in the U.S. was held in the parking lot just north of the pier.

The Playland arcade is the longest family-run tenant on the pier. Owner George Gordon opened it 1954 and his daughters still manage it today.

The La Monica Ballroom, which no longer stands on the pier, once housed the city jail — a very unsuccessful one.

There were two reported jailbreaks during the ballroom’s short stint in law enforcement.

In 1935 the yacht harbor offered daily service to Catalina Island, but interest eventually waned and the service was discontinued.

The first live television broadcast of a variety show happened on the pier in 1948 with KTLA’s “Hoffman’s Hayride” featuring Spade Cooley.

Remembering the fallen Famous patron

Every Sunday morning the community group Veterans for Peace can be seen erecting crosses on the beach representing soldiers who have died in Iraq.

Former carousel operator Jocky Stevens regularly saw a mysterious woman watching the ride, though she never rode it. One day he approached her and she revealed that she was none other than Marilyn Monroe!

The Santa Monica Pier was once one of six piers that ran up and down the Santa Monica Bay coastline.

John “Yosh” Volaski is credited with catching the first fish on the newly renovated pier in 1990. He snuck onto the pier the night before opening day to haul in some sea bass. d

Engineering wonder The City of Santa Monica chose to build the pier using concrete, making it the first of its kind on the West Coast.
