Diver survives after being scooped up in whale’s mouth off South Africa. This reminds us of Jonah and the whale.
A diver in South Africa survived an experience out of a biblical passage last month when he ended up almost being swallowed by a whale.
Rainer Schimpf, 51, was snorkeling off the coast of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, when he ended up in the path of a Bryde’s whale, which opened his jaws and engulfed him headfirst.
“We were very astonished that out of nowhere this whale came up,” he told a news reporter.

“I was busy concentrating on the sharks because you want to know if the shark is in front of you or behind you, left or right, so we were very focused on the sharks and their behavior, then suddenly it got dark.”
Schimpf, who has worked as a dive operator for over 15 years, said he was in the water with two others for just a matter of minutes before the whale appeared. He had happened to be with a group recording a sardine run, which is where marine animals such as dolphins, whales, and sharks gather fish into bait balls.
The 51-year-old said once the whale grabbed him, he felt pressure around his

“So my next thought was that the whale may take me down into the ocean and release me further down, so I instantly held my breath,” he told a news reporter. “Obviously he realized I was not what he wanted to eat so he spat me out again.”
Unlike the biblical story of Jonah, Schimpf didn’t end up in the animal’s belly but was able to swim away after being released.

“Bryde’s whales are named for Johan Bryde, a Norwegian who built the first whaling stations in South Africa in the early 20th century,” the agency says. “Bryde’s whales are found in warm, temperate oceans including the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific.”
The whales can weigh about 90,000 pounds and grow to a length of 55 feet, according to the NOAA. The whales have a diet that consists mainly of krill, red crabs, shrimp and a “variety of schooling fishes,” but clearly not adult humans.

Schimpf said the whole experience showed him just how small humans are in the world.

RIVERDALE, GA – Happy birthday, Ms. Maggie Katie Brown Kidd! The Clayton County resident turned 114 on Tuesday, making her the tenth longest living person in the world.
Ms. Kidd grew up on a farm in Stephens, Georgia, about 15 miles southeast of Athens. She lived a farm life until she was in her 70’s. She now lives with her daughter and son-in-law in Riverdale. She said her long life was a blessing from God and attributes her longevity to her farm life. James 5:16 is her favorite Bible verse

Ms. Kidd said her secret to looking young is to drink plenty of water because it helps the skin look beautiful. She also loves having her hair styled.
For the past decade, Ms. Kidd’s family and friends have gathered the Friday after Thanksgiving to celebrate her birthday. It’s an event she looks forward to all year, especially the cake.
In 1904, records for people of color were not very well kept, so Ms. Kidd celebrates her birthday on Dec. 4, which is the date of birth listed with the federal government, and Dec. 8, which

“For the family, it is a blessing just to have my Mom still with us and able to interact with people, so we just celebrate her birthday on both dates,” says her daughter Rosalyn.
Ms. Kidd is joining a very exclusive club of seniors around the world according to the Baylor College of Medicine – Huffington Center On Aging in Houston, Texas by turning 114. Just two years ago, she was named the oldest living African American in the United States.
In addition to that honor, she has been recognized by Clayton County officials going as far as to name a room at the Frank Bailey Senior Center in Riverdale after her.

Most of us have a hard time imagining even making it to 100, but not Hester Ford. Hester, born on August 15, 1905, just celebrated her 112th birthday. She’s the ninth oldest living person in the United States!
In honor of her birthday, Hester’s family planned a cookout where they shared memories of this incredible woman’s very full life. “She’s a hard working woman,” her daughter Hattie Thomas said.
Hester was born in Lancaster, South Carolina, the same year Teddy Roosevelt was elected to his second term as president. She lived on a farm where she planted and picked cotton, as well as plowed the field and cut wood. She later got married and she and her husband had 12 children – eight girls and four boys. She instilled in them the value of hard work.
“Hard work won’t kill you,” she said when asked what her biggest piece of advice was.
In 1953, Hester moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she worked for more than 20 years as a nanny for two families.

For more than a century, faith has played a central role in Hester’s life. She spent many years volunteering at her local church and loves to recite Bible verses.
Sadly, while Hester’s physical health is pretty good and she can still get around with her walker, her mental health is declining. Amazingly, though, while dementia has taken away many of her memories, it hasn’t taken away the Scripture she holds so dear. In fact, she can still recite the 23rd Psalm with no difficulty whatsoever!
Hattie has had conversations about death with her mother and said Hester told her she is “ready to go home. ”
“She
wants to go home to be with Jesus, ” Hattie said. “But we told her He’s not ready because He has something else for her to do here.” We know God still has great plans for this incredible woman of faith, but when He does finally take her home, her beautiful legacy will live on through her children, 48 grandchildren, 108 great-grandchildren, and approximately 120 great-great-grandchildren.

Meet Henry Tseng, the 111 year old who might work out more than you do.
Henry Tseng was doing yoga headstands in his 80’s and 6:30 AM dance aerobics in his 90’s. At 111 years old, he’s still kickin’, breaking a sweat on a recumbent bike for 30 minutes every day at the Collins & Katz
Family YMCA in Sawtelle.
What’s his secret? He gets that question a lot. His tips for longevity are no big surprise.
Most of them are clichés, but he shares them freely, and he thinks you can use them too.

HE’S ALWAYS MOVING
Tseng, a YMCA member since 1978, is somewhat of a local celebrity. Every day at 3:00 AM, he climbs out of his wheelchair on his own to sit on his favorite exercise bike, which he pedals for half an hour.
“The older you are, the more you need exercise,” Tseng said, adding that he doesn’t feel old, and he doesn’t count his years.
A retired entrepreneur, Tseng has been active for his entire life, said his daughter Linda Hsia. When he was younger, he enjoyed swimming and outdoor sports. As he got older, he adapted to his abilities by choosing different activities at the YMCA.
“He was the motivation for getting up, even for me to get in there and teach the class,”

“He was the core of the class. You couldn’t say in that class, ‘Well, I’m getting old.’ That would go out the window.”
When Tseng isn’t working out, he’s still moving, doing simple yoga poses in his chair, and squeezing stress balls to strengthen his grip.
HE EATS WHAT HE WANTS, BUT…
He keeps junk to a minimum, and he lives by the old adage, “breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper.”
Continued on next page said Michelle Dodson, the assistant director of Healthy Lifestyles at the Collins & Katz Family YMCA. She teaches a 6:30 AM adult fitness class three times a week, and she said Tseng never missed it before he turned 100.
Tseng’s breakfast is certainly king size. He eats half a grapefruit, half a banana, bread with butter and jam, two soft boiled eggs, half a bowl of cereal or oatmeal, a cup of coffee and a glass of orange juice. He takes his meal at a leisurely pace, reading the newspaper and watching television.
“Can you believe that?” said one of his caretakers Carol Puial, who cooks his meals and drives him to his workouts.
Puial changes things up each day for lunch, which she said is easy because Tseng isn’t picky. Sometimes it’s Italian, Chinese,or Mexican. He loves spaghetti and burgers, which Puial usually makes from scratch. If they do go out, McDonald’s is his first choice.

His dinners are simple and easy to swallow: soup, omelets, ground beef, pulled pork, or baked chicken.
“I only eat 70 percent full,” said Hsia, repeating one of her father’s sayings.
Tseng takes a basic multivitamin, and he doesn’t cut any foods out of his diet. The only things off limits are alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs.
HE HANGS OUT IN THE SUNSHINE
Weather permitting, Tseng and his caretakers go to Holmby Park in Westwood, where Tseng enjoys the sunshine for an hour or two after his workout.
“I like fresh air, ” Tseng said. “More trees, more open sky and not too many people. ”

It’s a quiet ritual, except for when bus tour guides, who drive past the park and recognize Tseng, point him out to their tour groups.
“Look, there’s the guy who’s 111!”
After that, they head straight to Starbucks for Tseng’s daily treat: a mocha.

“I’m very positive. Every day. Rain or shine,” Tseng said.
Most people in Tseng’s life – from his relatives to his fellow YMCA members – are struck by his upbeat attitude.
“He loves people. He loves life, ” said Ann Samson, executive director of the Collins & Katz Family YMCA. “The fact that his mind is so alert I think has a lot to do with him being

Tseng tells people that one of his secrets to longevity is to smile every day and to never worry.
“I have lots of small troubles like everybody, but I just say, ‘forget about it, ’” Tseng said. “Nothing is impossible.”

Tseng has supported multiple fundraisers at the YMCA, such as the Kids-to-Camp Campaign and the Community Support Campaign. He was the president of the Hong Kong Rotary Club before moving to Los Angeles in 1975, and he’s been involved in the Westwood Rotary Club for 40 years.

In 1996, he helped found the YMCA’s P.L.U.S.S. Program, a support group and exercise plan for people with Parkinson’s disease.

Don’t be a courtesy victim. Older generations were taught to be courteous at all times, whether guests visit them in person or contact them by phone. Con artists often take advantage of these overly accommodating seniors, exploiting their good manners to get at their money. Remember, strangers who call and ask for your money should be regarded with the utmost caution. The best response is to hang up the phone. Verify, and then trust. Trusting strangers is a mistake that many seniors make when it comes to their personal finances. Don’t feel pressured by someone who asks you to make an

Instead, get written information about the investment, review it carefully, and make sure that you understand all the risks involved before you part with your hard-earned money.
A favorite tactic of telemarketing con artists is to develop false bonds of friendship. They know that some senior citizens are eager to have someone to talk to on the phone, even if the caller is a complete stranger. When a telemarketer phones, do not be swayed by offers of unrelated advice and assistance – they are merely efforts to develop a sense of friendship and even dependency for one purpose only: to win your confidence and take your money.
Also keep in mind that almost all investment products must be registered. The Texas State Securities Board can tell you if the investment and the salesperson is registered. Extensive background information on registered individuals and firms is available for securities dealers and agents and for investment advisers.
Never judge a person’s integrity by how they sound. Senior citizens who fall prey to a con artist often explain that the swindler sounded like such a nice person. Successful con artists sound professional and are able to make even the flimsiest investment deals sound as safe as putting money in the bank. They combine these sales pitches with extremely polite manners, knowing that many older

Continued on next page people may equate good manners with personal integrity. No matter how caring or well meaning a person sounds, it has no bearing on the soundness of an investment opportunity.
Watch out for salespeople who prey on your fears. Con artists play on older people’s concern that they will either outlive their savings or see all of their financial resources vanish overnight as the result of a catastrophic event, such as a costly hospitalization. Playing on these fears of running out of money, swindlers often pitch schemes as a way for the elderly to build up their life savings to allay fears of running out of money. Remember, though, that fear, like greed, can cloud people’s good judgment and lead them into a terrible investment.
Don’t let embarrassment or fear keep you
from reporting fraud or abuse. Some senior citizens fail to report that they have been victimized for fear that they will be judged incapable of handling their own affairs. Other seniors believe that their victimization will be viewed as grounds for forced institutionalization in a nursing home or other facility. Con artists count on these sensitivities to prevent or delay the elderly from reporting the scam to authorities. Money lost to investment fraud is rarely recovered, and if it is, the amount returned is likely to be pennies on the dollar.

A New York Man Finds $10,000 Cash in Hundred-Dollar Bills, While Getting on the New York Subway. Richard Taverna’s eye quickly caught the blue Chanel bag on the train platform at Lincoln Center on Thursday morning.
“I picked it up to see if there was an identification so I could get it to the right person,” said Taverna. The gift of giving back was taken to another level when a Manhattan man turned in
$10,000 cash he found in a purse on a subway platform to police.

“According to your faith so be it unto you” (St. Matthew 9:20). Saint Matthew’s Churches prayer team is a small group of praying parents and grandparents whose lives are dedicated to praying for people and mailing out gospel books, sermon prayer letters and other Christian literature. Most of all we pray for people to be saved and be ready to meet Jesus when they die or when Jesus comes. We believe this is the most important thing in life, more important than success or material blessings. But, we also believe that the blessings of God are not limited to salvation of the soul. We believe you can have everything God promises you in the Bible. We believe God wants to bless you, his child, spiritually, physically, and financially (III John 2). We believe God wants his children to prosper and have the nicer things in life (Philippians 4:19). We pray for God to bless folks with their own businesses, more money, finer homes and automobiles. We believe God’s people can have the best of everything. It is God answering prayer, not us, that is making these wonderful things happen for people. Give God the praise.
We write our partners letters each month, all of the same faith-building nature. These items of faith, which we send out along with our letters, have no power but are merely spiritual faith handles like Jesus and His disciples used during their time to help people focus their faith on God.
