ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The Sacrament for the seriously ill, infirm, and aged. The minister Anoints the Sick to asks God to help the sick in body and soul.

APOSTLES

The twelve men that Jesus chose to spread His teaching to the whole world. The Apostles are: Peter, James (the Greater), John, Andrew, Matthew, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, James (the Less), Simon, Jude, and Judas who betrayed Jesus and was replaced by Matthias.

AMEN

A word that means “So be it” or “I believe.” Amen means that we agree with what the speaker says, or believe the prayer we have just said.

APOSTLES’ CREED

A short prayer of belief in twelve truths which contain the most important doctrines of the Christian Faith. The Apostles’ Creed is said to have been given to us by the Apostles.

CHRIST

The official title given to the Son of God Who became Man to save us. Christ means “the Anointed One” or “the Messiah.”

CHRISTMAS

The day on which Christ was born in Bethlehem. We celebrate the feast of Christmas on December 25.

CHURCH

The building in which we worship God. Church also means the People of God who believe in Jesus Christ and who follow Him.

The praise and honor we give to God. In heaven we shall share His glory.

GOOD FRIDAY Friday in Holy Week, anniversary of Christ’s Death on the Cross. On Good Friday some people fast and abstain from meat.

EVANGELISTS

The writers of the four Gospels that tell us about the life and teaching of Jesus. The four Evangelists are: Matthew Mark, Luke, and John.

FAITH

Faith is a gift of God by which the Holy Spirit helps us to accept God’s Word and to give ourselves to the heavenly Father. We have faith in Jesus as the Son of God.

HOPE

A gift of God which helps us to know that God loves us and cares for us, and that we can trust in Him. We have hope in God for the grace we need to reach heaven because of His promises.

COMMUNION

The bread and wine represent Christ’s body and blood. We remember his sacrifice when we take Communion.

INCARNATION

The taking of human nature by God the Son when He was made man by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Incarnation is the Mystery of God made Man.

INSPIRATION

The Holy Spirit gave light to the writers of the Bible so that God Himself became the author of the books they wrote. Inspiration made them express God’s Word.

LAST SUPPER

The last meal taken by Christ with His Apostles, the night before His Passion. At the Last Supper He instituted the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood, and gave the Apostles a long instruction on the Holy Trinity and Christian charity.

JESUS

His name means “The Lord is salvation.” It was given by God to the Son of the Virgin Mary, Who was truly man but truly God as the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. We should always honor the Name of Jesus.

JOSEPH

The husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus.

Joseph was a carpenter and was known as a just man.

JUDGMENT

The judgment which will be passed on each one of us after death is called the particular judgment. At the last judgment all of us will stand before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what we deserve, according to what we have done on earth, good or evil.

JUSTICE

KNEELING

Resting on bent knees as a sign of reverence. We kneel when we pray to God and Jesus in the Eucharist.

LORD’S PRAYER

The prayer which Jesus taught us. The Lord’s Prayer is called the “Our Father,” the most important prayer of Christian worship.

What agrees with God’s laws about the rights of God and human beings. We practice justice when we give everyone his or her rightful due.

LOVE

Love is a gift of God which helps us to love God, and to love all people for the love of God because they too belong to Him. Love of God and neighbor is called the Great Commandment.

MERCY

Showing forgiveness and loving help to others out of love for God. God has mercy on all who come to Him in faith and love and sorrow for sin.

MATRIMONY

A Sacrament in which Jesus Christ makes marriage a lifelong, sacred union of husband and wife, by which they give themselves to each other and to Him. In Matrimony God gives them His grace to do their duties toward each other and their children.

Jesus Christ is the long-awaited Redeemer Who came to deliver us from sin. Messiah is a Hebrew word for “Anointed One” foretold by the Prophets.

MIRACLE

An event that takes place because God wills it and human beings alone could not do. Jesus worked miracles to prove that He was the Son of God.

MYSTERY

A religious truth wich we believe but cannot understand. Mystery also refers to events in the life of Jesus.

NATIVITY

Christmas, the birthday of Jesus Christ. The feast of the Nativity is celebrated on December 25.

NAZARETH

The town where Jesus lived and grew up. Nazareth is located in Galilee.
