COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & LEARNING

CLASSROOM CURRICULUM CONNECTS TO THE COMMUNITY • Programme introduced in 2017-18. • Real-world experiences. • Impactful partnerships with individuals and organizations. • Designed to enrich student learning and achievement. • Encourages students to participate in community service projects, and teaches them the value of giving back to the community.

• Facilitates Inquiry-Based Learning—a form of active learning that starts by posing questions, problems, or scenarios.

OUR APPROACH Experiential Learning + Independent Study + Learning Partnerships Our experiential education approach provides authentic, dynamic, and meaningful opportunities for students to gain knowledge, inspire curiosity, and explore more deeply while complementing the curriculum. It combines independent study, which is embedded in all our courses, offering students the opportunity to explore a concept or topic that is relevant to their own learning. Learning partnerships deepen the learning by facilitating a stronger connection between the classroom and real world.

“The highlight of the Ottawa trip was visiting the museum and seeing a live musical. Both experiences showed how art and storytelling can educate and connect people in powerful ways.” - Grade 11 Media Arts student “Visiting the University of Michigan gave me a first-hand look at what studying business and science at a world-class university is like. It motivated me to think bigger about my future and the opportunities available after high school.” - Grade 10 student “What I loved most about Taste of SMCS was how it brought our community together. The students were outstanding, demonstrating tremendous pride in sharing their cultures and traditions. It was wonderful to see students and staff come together to celebrate the diversity within our school. I hope the event provided everyone with an opportunity to learn more about the different cultures and ethnicities represented in our student body and to deepen our appreciation for one another.” - Grade 12 student “The inaugural Taste of SMCS was a vibrant celebration of the cultures, traditions, and identities that make up our school community. Student affinity groups within the school came together to share food, music, and stories, creating meaningful opportunities for learning and connection. The event highlighted the rich diversity within our student body while fostering a greater sense of belonging and appreciation for one another. As a first-time event, Taste of SMCS successfully brought our community together and laid the foundation for a meaningful new school tradition.” - Grade 12 student “Mr. McCarthy’s workshop showed us how computer science can be used to solve real-world problems. It was engaging, hands-on, and helped me better understand the possibilities within the field.” - Grade 12 student
