Chief Executive Officer, SMBC Americas Division and President and Chief Executive Officer of SMBC Americas Holdings, Inc.
Hirofumi (Hiro) Otsuka is Managing Executive Officer, CEO for SMBC Americas Division, and President and CEO of SMBC Americas Holdings, Inc. Hiro was appointed to these positions on April 1, 2022.
Prior to his current assignment, Hiro was Managing Executive Officer and General Manager, Planning Department Global Banking Unit, SMBC, and General Manager, Planning Department Global Business Unit for Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG) from April 2020 to April 2022. In these capacities, Hiro oversaw groupwide global business development outside Japan.
Hiro joined SMBC’s predecessor bank, the former Sumitomo Bank, in 1990, as a Marketing Officer in the Hibiya Branch Office in Tokyo. Earlier in his career, he had assignments in HR, Corporate Research, and the Real Estate Department.
Hiro gained extensive experience in structured and project finance through his various positions at the company, including those roles covering real estate, public-private partnerships, leasing, energy and natural resources. and emerging markets. In recent years, his focus has been on business planning and strategies for the entire organization.
Prior to his assignment as General Manager of PDGB for SMBC and SMFG, Hiro was Executive Officer and General Manager of the Asia Business Strategic Planning Department from April 2019 to April 2020. He has led SMBC/SMFG’s long-term business strategy and development, including mergers and acquisitions of financial institutions in key Asian markets, such as Indonesia, India, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
In April 2018, Hiro was appointed as an Executive Officer and was General Manager of SMFG and SMBC’s Asia Growing Markets Division International Business Unit in Singapore and Tokyo and General Manager of SMFG and SMBC’s Business Development Department International Business Unit in Singapore and Tokyo. Hiro spent more than one decade of his career in the Americas Division, from 2003 to 2014. He was instrumental in establishing the Houston Office in 2006, building the project finance and Latin America businesses in 2007, and held key senior management positions during his tenure in the Americas, including as Chief Representative of the Houston Office, Executive Vice President of SMBC Leasing & Finance, and Managing Director and Co-Head of the Specialized Finance Department.
Hiro earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree with a focus on civil engineering from The University of Tokyo.
Robin Milberg Chief Human Resources OfficerRobin Milberg is Chief Human Resources Officer for SMBC Group in the Americas. She was named to this position on September 1, 2022.
As a seasoned Human Resources executive with depth of experience in financial services, Robin is well-positioned to ensure the HR team is a capable and willing partner with the business, using their skills to support growth in the Americas. Her strong background spans the breadth of HR, with particular expertise in recruiting, compensation, and organizational/cultural change initiatives.
In her role as Chief Human Resources Officer, Robin is responsible for developing and implementing the overall HR strategy for the Americas. This includes the fulllife cycle of the employee’s experience from recruitment to retirement, as well as ensuring the supporting HR technology, data, and operations are effective and efficient.
Robin is a leader who knows the power of diversity and recognizes the opportunities it creates for business and the workplace. She demonstrates passion for creating and maintaining an inclusive workplace, a strong culture, and bringing the corporate values to life.
Most recently, Robin was SMBC’s Managing Director and Head of Human Resources for the Americas, where she led the day-to-day operations of the HR team. She oversaw significant organizational change and executive-level hiring, and led the team charged with developing new HR policies and processes to meet increasing industry regulatory requirements.
Prior to joining SMBC in 2015, Robin was with the Royal Bank of Scotland in its Corporate and Institutional Banking division for eight years, where she gained an acute understanding of the role of HR as a business partner with specific and necessary skills. She held positions of increasing responsibility, including Managing Director and Senior HR Business Partner for Markets in the company’s London, England and Stamford, Connecticut offices.
Before RBS, Robin worked for General Electric, Inc. for 10 years in various HR roles. She joined GE in 1997, where she recruited MBA candidates for one of the company’s Global Leadership Programs.
Robin holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Connecticut.
