From the moment you enter the campus, you experience a QR Code-based visitor management system and a parking management solution with sensors and empty slot displays. Inside the office, we offer various options such as Digital Way Finders, Room Schedulers for meeting rooms, Cafeteria Management, Desk Occupancy Sensors, Washroom Occupancy Management, Lighting Systems, Sunlight-Simulated Automated Blind Controls, Circadian Rhythm Lighting, CO2 sensors, and more. Brands like Lutron, Crestron, Cisco and Siemens are integral in our projects.”

He further emphasizes, “When combined with

data analysis, automation provides significant benefits. It not only boosts productivity but also enables predictive analysis, benefiting longterm systems and property management.

Automation is a tool – it’s crucial to assess what’s necessary and what’s not, and to clearly define the expected outcomes. However, simply choosing the best or most advanced technology doesn’t guarantee optimal results; it’s about understanding how and where to apply it effectively.”

training, collaboration, or hosting social events— simply at the touch of a button. The extent and use of technology are determined by the specific needs of each space, enhancing both efficiency and user experience. Automation also helps create a comfortable, productive

Conferencing solutions include Soft VC, with QOMO Presentation 600F3 touch screen displays. The lighting system is powered by Philips LED lights, while IDIS security cameras and SPECTRA digital locks enhance security.

The amplifier used is the QSC SPA4-100, with Earthpot and Tannoy sound systems for audio. Sensors from Lutron and Philips, as well as LG and Aver video systems, provide advanced control, while Liberty manages video control. Biometrics are handled by SPECTRA, and D-Link networking hardware and devices ensure seamless connectivity across the entire system.” Some of the projects smart offices designed by them are the Training Center, in Powai, Mumbai, the Procter & Gamble, Mumbai Payu Go Project in Andheri, Mumbai, and the ABB India Ltd Admin Office in Faridabad, Haryana.

Harkaran Singh Boparai, Founder and Principal Architect, Harkaran Boparai Studio (HBS) has used automation in his own office, speaking on the advantages he adds, “At our flagship studio in New Delhi, we integrated wired automation from Schneider to enhance the comfort and experience for both our clients and colleagues. This included controlling lighting, curtains, and advanced HVAC systems, ensuring a seamless and personalized environment throughout the space.”

Expressing his views on automation in projects he adds, “In new-age offices, automated systems play a crucial role in reducing operational costs by adjusting lighting, HVAC settings, and energy consumption based on real-time occupancy and environmental

factors. This not only helps decrease energy usage but also reduces the carbon footprint.

Beyond the financial and environmental advantages, automation contributes to a more comfortable and efficient workspace by adjusting lighting and climate to suit the current needs, which ultimately boosts employee well-being and satisfaction.”

Rakesh Sachdev, Founder & Managing DirectorACETECH TECHNOLOGIES (P) LTD one of the senior professionals in the automation segment sharing his insight on energy saving adds, “The boom in IT segment has already revolutionized

office processes with automation tools such as access control, motorized doors, and face recognition for time and attendance. With rising electricity costs and a growing focus on employee welfare, it is crucial to leverage automation to reduce energy consumption while maintaining a controlled ambiance.

Effective use of scene settings and time scheduling for lights and appliances can lead to substantial energy reductions.

Occupancy-based technologies that automatically turn on lights and air conditioners help conserve energy by preventing unnecessary illumination and cooling in empty spaces. Additionally, technologies like daylight harvesting optimize natural light usage, creating a well-balanced, consistent level of illumination using a combination of natural and artificial light sources. Comfort settings for air conditioning, along with constant illumination, contribute to a balanced environment that enhances productivity and employee well-being.”

HVAC & Climate Control Solutions are also a must because Smart thermostats optimize energy use by learning usage patterns and adjusting accordingly. Occupancy sensors enhance climate control by adjusting air conditioning based on room occupancy.

Other sensors, such as door/window sensors, automatically turn down the AC if windows or doors are left open. For even greater efficiency, air quality monitoring systems—tracking CO2 levels, AQI, humidity, and temperature—can be integrated with the HVAC system, creating custom triggers for air conditioning and air purification. In addition, motion sensors in common areas, washrooms, corridors, and cabins offer a cost-effective way to save energy while ensuring hands-free operations. With these technologies, the modern smart office becomes not only more intelligent but also more sustainable, creating an environment that’s both efficient and comfortable for its users.

Sharing his expert views on the key benefits and their approach in providing smart solution he adds, “When looking at Smart office automation, we break down the office space into zones based on usage parameters with efficiency in mind. In short, workplace ergonomics are a key parameter in most office automation solutions. And the 3 primary areas that have to be looked at primarily are Lighting, Climate control and Centralised Control of the office space over an APP on phones and tablets.

Expressing his views on the smart solution they offer Zain Merchant informs, “In lighting, Messung Ourican offers Dimming controllers for Analog dimming with the MES-DIM-4VR or Phase cut dimming control with MES-DIM-

rooms or areas to operate the lights or AC as you would in a non- automated, conventional office space.”

According to Zain the `must-have’ solutions for Smart Offices are “KNX based Automation is always recommended for smart office automation. The main advantage of KNX is that it’s an Open BUS system with over 500 manufacturers globally making KNX products allowing for an office space to incorporate solutions based on their requirements. Need a Luminosity sensor to monitor and control the shutters based on sunlight and simultaneously trigger the lighting and climate of the work space; you can locate the right product on KNX. Need to integrate your office system with the Building BMS system, you can integrate BACNET with KNX over an IP interface.

2P. In terms of DALI lighting control, we offer our MES-DALI-64 KNX controller to control 64 independent DALI drivers and program them on KNX zonally for better control.”

He further elaborates “With the MES-IPSERVER KNX APP module from Ourican, the entire office automation can be controlled over an app. This includes, Curtain control, AC control, Projector and TV control in conference rooms making it easy to control the office space without having to go to individual 16 | SMART HOME WORLD | NOVEMBER 2024

“Take our DALI solution over KNX. As our controller is designed on the DALI 2.0 protocol, it can control Type 8 DALI drivers which allow office space to have Cool (white) lighting during the morning hours and based on the time of day, automatically change the colour

temperature to warm (yellow) towards the evening time to reduce fatigue. We constantly focus on Human-Centric solutions for office automation to increase workplace efficiency and reduce electricity wastage of areas not populated in an office for too long like conference rooms. With KNX, we break the

space into different zones and program the lighting, climate, and curtains zonally, which can always be reprogrammed based on client preferences.” Informs Zain Merchant.

He further adds, “HVAC or the Air conditioning of the office space can be either a AHU system, A VRV system or in some cases, independent indoor AC units based on the size of the

office space. For all these, over KNX, there exist Gateways and KNX AC controllers that allow complete control of that area’s climate.

Additionally, you can incorporate Sensors to the KNX automation to detect presence and automatically turn on, or off based on whether the room or zone is currently occupied or not. “ SMART HOME WORLD | NOVEMBER 2024 | 17

This comprehensive solution is tailored to enhance BPCL’s organizational security, safeguarding its people, property, and assets while ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and aligning with the company’s strategic priorities. We have also been instrumental in enhancing the security infrastructure in one of the key projects, Central Vista Redevelopment Project under the premises security solutions category which includes Hydraulic Bollards, X-ray Baggage Inspection Systems, Vehicle Surveillance Scanners, Flap Barriers, Turnstiles, DFMDs, HHMD, and Boom Barriers. These systems will work together seamlessly to create a robust security infrastructure that can effectively detect and prevent security threats.

He further adds, “We have been instrumental in providing a comprehensive Key Management System to Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC-SHAR), the Spaceport of India, one of the lead centers of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Godrej Security Solutions will deliver an efficient and state-of-the-art Key Management System, enabling enhanced security measures at SDSC-SHAR.”

Future Prospects Ar. Alhad Gore, Principal Architect, Beyond Design, says, “Underfloor air distribution, radiant cooling, Geo thermal cooling/heating will gain momentum. Solar, Automated Sun Control Louvers to name a few. For interiors, BIM (Building Information Modelling ) will definitely start ruling the scene the way CAD happened slowly and steadily around 30/35 years back. I will not be surprised if we see VR and AR becoming very common going forward helping not only the design phase but the site execution phase also.”

Pushkar Gokhale, EVP and Business Head, Security Solutions Business, Godrej & Boyce says, “The future of smart office technology will

be shaped by deeper integration of AI, advanced IoT-enabled devices, and more sophisticated biometric solutions. These innovations will not only enhance security but also provide insights into energy efficiency, space utilization, and overall operational effectiveness.”

Office Infrastructure is focused on increased workplace efficiency while keeping costs manageable. If left unchecked, an office space can face hefty electricity bills while having an environment that is not ergonomic with manpower struggling with the Climate either being too cold, or too warm or the lighting causing them discomfort. Spaces that are unoccupied for hours and still have the lights and AC switched on are wasting electricity.

For this, we are partnering with Beyond Alliance and Crestron to ensure a seamless, high-quality solution. One of the biggest challenges we’re facing is designing these systems to be intuitive and easily accessible for users of all ages, from children to older adults, ensuring that everyone can easily operate the technology and fully enjoy the convenience and comfort it offers.

Which Home Automation brand do you prefer, and what specific features make them essential to your designs?

We frequently choose Crestron for our automation projects because it offers a user-friendly interface that makes it easy for homeowners to control and customize their living environments. Sustainability is a major point when it comes to choices of smart technologies. For example in a residential project that we executed a while ago, the solar energy generation calculations are integrated in the systems for the user to see the power usage, adjust the lighting and HVAC according and this also integrates the rain water harvesting system monitoring in this.

Are there any innovative concepts or technologies in Home Theatres that you find particularly exciting? And want to incorporate it in your projects.

The new technologies that truly excite me include eye motion trackers, smart lighting solutions designed to reduce eye fatigue, and the full integration of AV systems.

Strengthening Security for the KNX Modbus RTU Gateway 886.1 The KNX Modbus RTU Gateway 886 has just become even more powerful with the launch of the KNX Modbus RTU Gateway 886.1 secure.

Now equipped with KNX Security support and a range of new features, this upgraded model offers even greater flexibility and performance.

The configuration options for mapping Modbus registers to KNX data points have been expanded, bringing them in line with the capabilities of the KNX Modbus TCP Gateway 716 secure.

The new KNX data point converter simplifies the process of converting between different data point types (DPTs) and scaling value ranges, ensuring seamless integration with a wide variety of devices.

Powering the device is straightforward: the 886.1 is powered via the KNX bus, so no additional auxiliary voltage is required.

A key enhancement in this release is the ability to test Modbus functions directly from the ETS parameter area. This feature eliminates the need for multiple downloads during communication tests. Now, test queries can be made directly through the gateway, even without a full KNX configuration—just program the gateway’s physical address. This means settings can be tested before completing the ETS configuration, saving time and simplifying the installation process.
