The Future of Smart Home Hubs: From Centralized Control to Advanced Automation. Smart Home World presents an overview of Smart Home Hubs, and how they have evolved over the years from Centralized Control to Advanced Automation. Read on to know more… Smart Home Hubs have become a cornerstone of modern living when it comes to home automation and Smart Home Technology! As India embraces the era of smart living, the widespread adoption of Smart Home Hubs is evident. The growing acceptance of Smart Home Hubs in India can be attributed to their ability to streamline and enhance daily tasks. From controlling lights and thermostats to managing security systems and entertainment devices, these hubs provide a centralized 14 | SMART HOME WORLD | DECEMBER 2023

platform for convenient and efficient home automation. Functionality and Integration with Other Devices For those few readers who are not familiar with the functionality and integration, a smart home hub usually has a built-in switch, which maintains the information necessary to determine how and where data is forwarded.

Devices may also include computing resources to perform some processing tasks before data is forwarded. The associated smart home app acts as a “universal remote” for all smart home devices, allowing the owner to monitor elements of the smart home network and automate, schedule and control tasks. Smart home hubs can control many smart home and IoT-enabled devices and systems, including smart sensors on thermostats, lightbulbs, outlets and switches, door locks and sensors, doorbells, garage door openers, energy monitors, window treatments/ coverings and sensors. They can also control motion sensors, flood and leak sensors, smart radios and speakers, security systems and cameras, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, irrigation controllers, fans, water heaters and other household appliances. Many smart home devices come with their proprietary hubs, but these systems often cannot integrate with other smart home systems, disabling devices from communicating -- for example, if a smoke

detector senses a fire, it may not be able to tell the smart locks to unlock the door for an easier exit or firefighter access. In this instance, a dedicated smart home hub can offer a single point of control. Likewise, if a homeowner uses smart lightbulbs from different manufacturers, each may have its hub with its App. A dedicated smart home hub can combine and simplify the use of disparate hubs. Though a dedicated smart home hub provides a centralized command center, it doesn’t mean the proprietary hubs can be discarded; a dedicated smart home hub won’t replace the hubs that come with devices, but it connects them all into a centralized location. Getting rid of proprietary hubs can reduce the device or system’s functionality. Popular Brands There are many brands with many advanced features like Control4 is a good choice for your home control system because of how well it integrates with other devices and platforms. than 12,000 devices across 300 manufacturers. SAVANT systems offer greater customization. You make these scenes by picking a device or combination of devices and telling them to perform certain functions in certain situations. For instance, an “Away” scene might turn Off all the lights, lower your shades, lock your doors, and turn on your security system as you leave for work. Another option is CRESTRON, their control app, Crestron OS 3, can be tweaked down to the most minute detail. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions for a Crestron system. Lutron is the industry leader in creating powerful, easy-to-manage smart lighting and shading systems. Other popular smart home hub products in the market are Samsung SmartThings Hub, LG ThiQ, Philips Hue Bridge, Amazon Echo Plus and Google Nest Hub to name a few. While the other smart speakers and devices that can be used as smart home hubs include Apple HomePod, Apple TV 4K and Google Nest. Centralized Intelligence

This not only enhances response times but also ensures functionality even if the central hub experiences connectivity issues. Expert views on Growth Drivers, Challenges and what advantages they prefer Growth drivers for the adaptation of smart home hubs according to Rakesh Sachdev, Founder & MD Acetech Technologies,

“Visibility in home automation will undergo a revolution similar to the widespread adoption of flat Screens. As more people embrace home automation, it becomes a sought-after feature for others. Energy saving, is a crucial driving factor, especially with rising energy costs. For the aspirational middle class, the concern over energy costs becomes a significant influence on their decision to invest in home automation. Additionally, sustainability emerges as another key driver. Rakesh emphasizes the importance of low cost, feasibility, easy availability, and energy efficiency in influencing purchasing decisions. He underscores the need for education about these solutions in India, where cautious spending habits are a crucial factor in adopting new products or services.” Ar. Suraj Mittal, Principal Architect, Future Concepts, “Until we instill that feel-good factor and educate users at large. They will be in two minds whether to invest substantial amounts like 20 lakh or 15 lakh in automation. However, comprehending the specifics of what automation entails can be challenging. In our experience, engaging with over a hundred

projects annually, we find that in approximately 65 to 70 percent of these projects, automation is a necessity. Yet, during the initial client conversations about automation, they often have little to no understanding of its components; their knowledge is limited to operating light with their phone, and most likely he can play songs.” Ashwani Agrawal Aura Smart, Co-Founder & CEO Aura Smart says, “Visibility and reach are poised to be the driving forces behind the narrative. Presently, the reach is limited in India, focusing mainly on architect-driven projects in urban areas. However, there exists a vast, untapped market in houses led by contractors in rural or semi-urban spaces and towns. Currently, our reach hovers around a mere half a percent, leaving a significant portion of the market untapped. This untapped segment represents a potential game-changer where volumes could surpass our expectations. To accelerate this expansion, addressing real and pressing issues, such as water insecurity or simplifying everyday tasks like lighting control, can be instrumental.” SMART HOME WORLD | DECEMBER 2023 | 17

has made great leaps, evolving from a basic monoaural audio system—that is, single audio channel to today’s surround sound systems, which range from a minimum of 5.1 (6-channel) or 7.1 (8-channel) setups suited for home theatres to large 64-channel and higher setups for cinema screens. The spatial sense of sound and its accuracy in these systems is however limited to the number of speakers and the positions they are in.

technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. Unlike traditional audio methods that distribute sound across different channels, it’s an object-based audio technology that breaks audio down into individual objects that move around in a three-dimensional space. With Dolby Atmos, sounds are precisely placed and moved anywhere in a room, including overhead, to make the entertainment experience sound more realistic and immersive.

One of the latest buzzes in the music industry is Immersive Audio. For those who are not familiar with Immersive audio, it is a generic term that describes a broad range of technologies designed to make the sound listening experience more lifelike and encompassing for the listener. Immersive audio aims to create a three-dimensional sound experience, which means listeners can perceive sounds coming from all around them, including from above and below, not just from left and right. This is achieved using various technologies and techniques, such as surround sound, object-based audio, and binaural audio.

Dolby Atmos is a form of immersive audio, but not all immersive audio systems use Dolby Atmos. Other formats, such as Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D, Sony 360 Reality Audio, MPEG-H 3D Audio (ISO/IEC 23008-3), DTS:X, THX Spatial Audio, and Discrete Immersive, and others provide immersive audio experiences but use different technologies or standards. The exact specifications and performance can vary depending on the technology used and how it’s implemented.

Dolby Atmos is a specific immersive audio 22 | SMART HOME WORLD | DECEMBER 2023

Ashish Hingorani, Managing Director, Avenue Sound We have extensive experience working with leading immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D, as well as for television, MPEG-H 3D Audio. Immersive audio has revolutionized sound reproduction, enhancing the listener’s experience with its multi-dimensional qualities. In our projects, we strive to integrate these formats into Dedicated Home Theaters and Media Rooms, adding an extra layer to audio that immerses users, providing heightened realism and accuracy to the sound stage. We carefully plan speaker layouts to accommodate major immersive formats— Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D—in Dedicated Theater Rooms and, when space allows, in Media Rooms. By future-proofing the room with a speaker design that accommodates multiple formats, we ensure clients can fully enjoy content encoded in any of these immersive audio technologies. Our immersive audio solutions cover a wide range, from independent speakers for each channel of direct sound to more compact

options like soundbars. We advocate for a comprehensive experience with discrete channels of audio, but when space or aesthetics are limiting factors, we integrate soundbars, emphasizing that the experience may be more virtual than what individual speakers can provide. Whether it’s in-wall, on-wall, or tower and bookshelf speakers, our choice depends on the room’s acoustics, aesthetics, and client preferences. Integration with AV Components Integrating immersive audio systems with other AV components is a crucial aspect of our approach. As immersive audio and smart technology often go hand in hand, we align these systems with high-resolution video solutions. To enhance user experience, we seamlessly integrate audio/visual solutions with lighting, window shadings, HVAC, and more, consolidating control into a single user interface. This holistic integration elevates the overall realism, offering a premium, unified experience. Ensuring compatibility with various audio sources is a priority. All streaming services, digital content, and audio services, including Tidal and Apple Music, support immersive audio playback. With nearly every new Blu-ray release and digital audio source supporting digital outputs, we guarantee that our immersive audio setups can decode and reproduce signals from a diverse range of sources, providing a rich and immersive audio experience for our clients. INTERVIEW

Avi Rosenthal, Chairman of the Board at the Z-Wave Alliance, discusses pivotal achievements, and the robust Z-Wave Certification program, and anticipates a milestone of 4,400 certified devices from numerous brands by the close of 2023. Positioned as the most extensive interoperable sub-GHz collection of smart home devices, the Z-Wave ecosystem reflects a new era, poised to lead two decades of progress and innovation in smart homes and the connected IoT segment.

‘Matter + Z-Wave bridges will play a key role in connecting Matter devices to both Legacy and new Z-Wave devices’. How has Z-Wave Alliance evolved over the years, and what key technological advancements have shaped its trajectory? The Z-Wave Alliance has stood as the steward for Z-Wave technology for over two decades and recently, has undergone extensive changes that will be critical to the continued success of the protocol. Here, it is important to distinguish the difference between Z-Wave as the technology, and the Alliance as the organization dedicated to its advancement. Key milestones for the Z-Wave Alliance include the release of the interoperability layer of the Z-Wave standard to the public domain in 2016. The Z-Wave Public Spec provides cloud service developers, gateway makers, technology enthusiasts, and others free and easy access to the Z-Wave interoperability layer for the development of smart home IoT applications. Shortly thereafter, with security and interoperability as pillars of the Z-Wave

GUEST ARTICLE

In the first of this series of articles on KNX IoT, Bruno Johnson and Wouter van der Beek explain how KNX has fast become the leading wireless IoT solution for commercial building automation.

KNX IoT Emerges as Pinnacle Wireless Solution for Cutting-Edge Commercial Building Automation Digital transformation has been one the main strategy topics on company board meeting agendas for the last few years. The opportunity to develop digital services from cloud-based applications requires Internet protocol (IP) based network connections to edge devices that become the customer interface. Business of all shapes and sizes in commercial building automation have been asking for wireless IoT solutions to make this happen. The wait is finally over and the opportunity is right here, with the launch of KNX IoT Point API (KNX IoT). This is a new addition to the suite of KNX physical transmission media. The transmission medium is IPv6 (the later Internet protocol standard) thus future-proofing KNX as it can be used on IT equipment and all common IP physical transports. KNX Association contracted Cascoda, a-UK based IoT semiconductor and communications company, which has spent 12 years building

industry-leading knowledge in this area, to develop the KNX IoT Point API open-source software stack, thereby catapulting itself into the leading wireless IoT solution for commercial building automation. The new open-source software stack is based on the robust, tried and tested Thread Mesh LPWAN wireless standard. This has been extended with banking-level security and all that is required to be a perfect product market fit for KNX users. Furthermore, KNX IoT guarantees interoperability with existing KNX wired or wireless infrastructure because it uses the same functional blocks and the same communication model as other KNX technologies. This is key as it allows KNX tooling, such as the Engineering Tool Software (ETS), to be used for the configuration of KNX installations, regardless of the transport used. Specification: SMART HOME WORLD | DECEMBER 2023 | 55

The KNX IoT specification in the KNX system specifications group (3_10_5 KNX IoT Point API) describes: A new transport layer based on IPv6, e.g. WiFi, Ethernet and Thread-based networks. A new communication/message using CoAP and CBOR.

protocol

Using the same functional blocks as the other KNX transport layers. Using the same S-mode message semantics as the other KNX transport layers. Using the same configuration data to configure which device is talking to which device.

INTEROPERABLE

Figure 1 – KNX IoT and KNX Network Interoperability As demonstrated in the Specification section above, KNX IoT conveys the same semantic data on the transport layer as all other KNX implementations. This is the key feature of KNX IoT that guarantees interoperability between KNX IoT and the other KNX technologies, while allowing the same tools to be used for configuration of KNX installations, regardless of the permutation and combinations of transport used. Secure Legislators in both Europe and North America have developed standards for IoT security. For example, the European Commission (EC) has OPEN SOURCE

adopted new Articles in the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) which establishes a regulatory framework for placing radio equipment that can: Communicate over the Internet, either directly or via any other equipment. Process personal data, traffic data or location data. Enable users to transfer money, monetary value or virtual currency. These provisions become mandatory on 1 August 2024, at which point manufacturers of radio connected devices must be compliant. KNX IoT has been designed with this and the U.S. NIST cybersecurity standards in mind.

KNX IoT Point API Public Stack on GitLab KNX IoT is backed by an open source software stack, sponsored by the KNX Association and developed by Cascoda. Over a six-month period, Cascoda developed the open source KNX IoT software stack, whilst making sure that the specification-maintained alignment. Implementations of the stack were successfully demonstrated at Light+Building 2023 show in Frankfurt. Thread-compatible KNX IoT was developed in such a way that it can work with Thread. Thread is a low-power wireless mesh network-layer protocol, based on IPv6. Thread enables direct IP-based device-todevice and device-to-cloud communications. It reliably connects hundreds (or thousands) of products and includes mandatory security features. Thread networks have no single point of failure, can self-heal and reconfigure when a device is added or removed, and are simple to setup and use.

power, embedded devices. Summary The advantages of KNX IoT are that the new technology is IP-based and can therefore be used over IT networks. It has been developed with guaranteed interoperability with existing KNX technology, and it uses latest underlying internet-based technologies in its specification, thereby making KNX IoT secure by design. The specification has been designed with embedded devices in mind, and the open source stack implementing KNX IoT has been shown to be quite small, running with as little as 512kB of storage memory and 96kB of memory. Cascoda will shortly be releasing a KNX IoT over Thread development kit, and later a series of reference designs for particular applications. This development kit has been designed for flexibility and allows a huge range of commercially available sensors and actuators to be used, thereby covering thousands of use cases.
