Most Home Automation solutions allow users to create such ‘profiles’ or ‘scenes’ on their Smart Apps. Users can typically choose the various lighting, fans, AC, curtains and other combinations for each ‘profile’ and they can also change these profiles as per their preference. There can be profiles for when one wakes up in the morning (e.g ‘Good Morning’ profile) and another for when going to sleep. Similarly, they may be for events, like when leaving the home (‘Good Bye’ profile) or when watching a movie (‘Cinema’ profile) and so forth.

Maulik Unadkat, Founder of Beyond Alliance, traces the company’s humble beginnings to its future growth trajectory. He outlines their dedication to personalized automation solutions, simplifying things for clients.

SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 45

Founded in 2008, Beyond Alliance originated as a specialized Crestron Home Automation System Integrator. Over the past decade, they have evolved into a comprehensive technology design firm, offering end-to-end solutions in Automation, Audiovisual (AV), Networking, and Electronic Security. These centers serve as hubs for innovation, allowing them to showcase cutting-edge solutions and stay at the forefront of technology trends. Beyond Alliance, is committed to user-friendliness and ensures that their solutions not only meet technological standards but also enhance the overall comfort and convenience of our clients. In a tete-a-tete with Smart Home World, Maulik Unadkat shares the company’s vision, services and more… 46 | SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024

Beyond Automation is one of the most reputed companies in the industry. Can you take our readers through your journey so far? We see this as more than just reputation; it’s a responsibility. Presently, annually trusted by over 100 Interior Designers, Architects, and 250 High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs) to seamlessly integrate technology into their spaces, we grasp the importance of upholding this trust and ensuring technology harmonizes with their designs. With our 15 years of industry experience, Beyond Alliance has grown remarkably from a 12-person team in 2017 to a robust organization of 125 individuals. It’s the dedication and expertise of our team that have earned us the reputation as the most trusted company. In just the first two years, we passionately set up six experience centers, displaying the latest global technologies seamlessly adaptable to modern homes or workspaces. Beyond Alliance’s growth stems from assembling the right team, building robust infrastructure, and fostering fruitful collaborations. Moving forward, we pledge to maintain the trust our clients have placed in us and persist in innovating the integration of technology and design. Can you share with our professional readers some of the revolutionary projects you have

worked on, which have been a turning point in your career in terms of experimenting with new Luxury Home Automation, Smart Lighting, Audio Video and Electronic Security Segments or introducing innovative concepts? Like the soul of any new space is its design, the brain is the technology behind it. There is a tech solution for every human need. Whether its Radisson Nashik or a 12,000 sq ft Penthouse in the concrete jungle of Mumbai, a modern co-working space or workspace for financial hubs in BKC, we understand very well how to design a user-friendly solution tailored to the needs of these specific user profiles. There are 2 non-negotiables for any tech design: (1) It has to work. (2) It must be easy to use yet fulfil all needs and It has to be value for money. The day we grasped this and understood the expectations of the HNI user, things took off for us. End users are discerning enough to distinguish between value and price. Both under designing and over designing the solution fail miserably. What are the latest technological trends shaping the Home Automation, Office Automation, Audio Video and Electronic Security segments? The controls are gradually shifting towards

Apple HomeKit controls. Despite the globalization of technology advancements like KNX or DALI in automation, Dolby ATMOS in home cinema, and Wi-Fi 6 in networking, these developments have been present in India for over a decade. However, due to a lack of structured education or awareness, these technologies have remained accessible to select people. If designed optimally, these technologies could be made accessible and enjoyable for every home. As the industry has matured, the focus has shifted towards innovation on the UI/UX front and designer keypads. The overarching goal is to enhance the user experience. Our commitment lies in deploying the latest technologies in every space we design, ensuring that the end user experience becomes progressively simpler and more intuitive. These technologies are here to stay, and our mission is to integrate them seamlessly, making them accessible to a broader audience. Ambient light-rejecting screens, LED video walls, Short-throw-projectors, Dolby Atmos speakers, etc. are a few new technologies, what are the brands you integrate in most of your projects? Technology keeps evolving every year and hence we keep visiting all global technology shows to keep ourselves updated. This inspires us to incorporate the new ones that

appeal to us in our experience centers so that we can showcase the same to the end users. We try to remain as brand agnostic as possible so that our designing keeps the end user at the epicenter and not the brand. We love a few brands because of what value they deliver and they are all mentioned and continuously updated on our website (www. beyond-alliance.com) and instagram handle (@beyondallianceofficial). What are the recent challenging projects where you’ve utilized Trendy Audio Video and Electronics Security? A project is never challenging for a technocrat. It’s the task of adapting the same technology to different user demographics with equal acceptability and efficiency that we continuously focus on. Due to fear of technology, many people are averse to it and choose to stay away. The technology we implement can sing, emote, listen, talk, and bring more life and magic into your home. Passion should drive the choice of timber for audio as you immerse yourself in a 4K Dolby Atmos home cinema certified to THX HAA and ISF calibration standards. How have access and security solutions 48 | SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024

evolved for the residential market. What are the brands you prefer in your projects? We have started offering integrated security solutions. A facial ID scanner is waiting to unlock the space at the speed and efficiency at which our iphone unlocks itself. This is just the beginning. As a visitor notifies you with the same gadget a display phone next to your bed helps you face time them before you let them in. The same display can stream music to every room and control the colour temperature and intensity of every light to set the right vibe for that time of the day. We use IP based security and access control solutions from networking brands to secure the spaces we design. How do you envision the home automation industry in 5 years?

The home automation industry is maturing, recognizing the necessity for certified professionals to integrate these systems effectively. The system’s quality depends on its integrator. Organizations like CEDIA, THX, HAA, and ISF are investing efforts in training, certifying, and enhancing the standard of design and education in integration projects. As more integrators recognize the importance of such certifications, the quality of end-user experience will improve, leading to exponential demand growth. AI, gesture & Voice-Based tech is bound to catalyse innovation in this space. Most IoT based solutions are designed around switchboards and obsolete dimming technologies like triac/ phase-cut dimming. Hence, we don’t really appreciate retrofit wireless solutions in home automation as they have too many limitations in terms of user friendliness and innovation. Above that, our design philosophy is always low on radiations keeping in mind health hazards radio frequencies bring in. Even the Wi-Fi network goes to standby mode with 67% less radiation when data exchange is hibernating. Our design philosphy is always low on radiations keeping in mind health hazards

radio frequencies bring in. Even the Wi-Fi network goes to standby mode with 67% less radiation when data exchange is hibernating As an expert what would you suggest architects and designers should invest to enhance clients’ security and energyefficiency? Education is the key. CEDIA is a great platform that uses CPDs (Continuing Professional Development) to bridge the gap between the design and build industry and system integrators. We have 2 CEDIA instructors on board who can deliver education seminars to interior designers and architects who are the biggest influencers and consultants to end users when it comes to any aspect of selection or design. What is your future vision for your Company? There is a huge demand supply gap in our industry. A lot of users aspire such technology but dont know what to invest in and why. The only way we can spread this awareness and reach more needs is through collabrations and partnerships. “CSA is a global organization, and India is an important market for the Alliance and our members.” Can you briefly describe the mission and goals of the Connectivity Standard Alliance? The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) is an international community of more than 700 technology companies committed to open standards for the Internet of Things (IoT). Our wide-ranging global membership collaborates to create and evolve universal open standards for the products transforming people’s lives. With our members’ deep and diverse expertise, robust certification programs, and a full suite of open IoT solutions, the Alliance is leading the movement toward a more intuitive, imaginative, and useful world.

Tobin Richardson is the President and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), leading a mission to simplify and unify the Internet of Things (IoT) through open, global standards. With over 695 member companies across 45 countries, CSA drives collaboration among industry leaders to create a more connected, accessible, and sustainable world. Richardson spearheaded the launch of Matter, an IP-based standard supported by major IoT players like Amazon, Apple, Google, Comcast, and Samsung SmartThings, aiming to break down IoT “walled gardens” and foster interoperability. In an exclusive interview with Smart Home World, Tobin Richardson, President and CEO, Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), discusses ‘Matter at One Year’, recent partnerships, and future plans. 50 | SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024

How does your organization contribute to developing and promoting connectivity standards in the industry? Our organization is member-driven, we charter to provide a place where collaboration and important work can happen, on equal footing. We have mechanisms in place to allow for shared IP and a one-company-one vote structure. We have a memberled board of directors, memberdriven leadership and technology committees, and various levels of participation available. Every company volunteers their time to the Alliance and its initiatives. We are always recruiting and expanding our membership to include full representation of stakeholders in all the areas we work in. We also engage with government bodies

and regulators around the world, to align on priority areas and see where standards can make an impact – product security and data privacy are two of these new areas. Can you share with our professional readers the progress made by Matter, a protocol for smart home devices that was released by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (the Alliance) just over a year ago? Matter’s roll-out has out-paced the typical adoption cycles of previous industry standards. Rather than taking years for users to replace hub hardware, software updates enable existing smart home hubs and devices to become Matter controllers. This has created a global market with up to hundreds of millions of homes ready to connect new Matter devices. There are Matter products from popular and innovative brands across all initially supported device categories, with products and apps in users’ homes, on their smartphones and tablets, and store shelves. These numbers are in the hundreds of millions, if not more. Since the release of Matter 1.0, we’ve had 24,600 downloads of the spec, more than 2,500 individual products – software, hardware, apps – certifications, nearly 33% growth in the number of companies who have joined the

Matter Working Group, and the opening of an Alliance Interoperability Test Facility. There are 350 companies now participating in the Matter Working Group and over 4,700 individuals participating. We released two new updates to Matter in 2023, one in the spring with Matter version 1.1 and one in the fall with Matter 1.2 280 companies, including vendors, are supporting the new Matter standard, and some are even innovating built-in Matter support and Wi-Fi sensing functionality to help operators continue to progress with Matter. Can you share more details? This number has grown to 350 companies, almost double from when we announced the brand for Matter in 2021. We’re seeing companies joining the effort from all across the smart home and IoT ecosystem, and there continues to be unwavering support from our current members as well. Adoption is growing, and we continue to add new features, new device categories, and better and simpler tools for device and app makers. Another great thing about Matter is that it enables innovation on top of it. Matter unlocks new opportunities for companies and individuals to create new experiences that will benefit consumers and make the SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 51

smart home experience richer. We’ve solved the interoperability problem while adding in common elements and language along with a high bar of security. Now it’s up to companies to create on top of it. On the Wi-Fi sensing part, I believe you are talking about presence sensors. These are a powerful use case for Matter as now people can use occupancy as a way to make their home smarter and more energy efficient. We’ve seen some great examples already coming to market from our members and see this as a big and important category moving forward.

What do you have to say about the recent report, ‘Matter at One Year’, How will it help the industry? The Matter specification along with the SDK, testing tools, and certification program are continuing to evolve with active participation from hundreds of leading smart home engineers and product experts. Their meaningful contributions and hard work demonstrate that Matter continues to gain momentum and that the overall experience for consumers and developers will continue to improve over time. As users connect more of those Matter devices, member companies have actively engaged with each other about their experiences and initial challenges, and are continuing to make improvements in the specification to address them. We fully acknowledge that there is more work to be done in areas including interoperability, platform feature support, multi-admin, and Thread border router connectivity. We have teams actively working on making the experience better for developers and consumers alike and are confident that Matter will continue to evolve and get better over time.

power. Each of these efforts takes collaboration and consensus and can come to life as new standards, new principles, or under the guise of existing standards within the Alliance. Product Security in particular is one that we are excited about and will have news to share about. This group’s mission has been to create a robust certification program, rooted in industry best practices, technical excellence, and adherence to existing product security regulations in countries around the world, serving as a beacon and ensuring the security of IoT devices. The aim is to improve the overall security of IoT products worldwide, with a mark recognized by regulators and consumers that confirms a product’s security meets requirements, which also makes it easier for device makers to certify once and sell anywhere. What are the current strategic initiatives that the Connectivity Standard Alliance focuses on to enhance its impact in the industry? The Alliance transitioned a few years ago from a single technology focus (Zigbee) to an umbrella organization where member

companies can come together to solve industry challenges and foster the adoption of technology through global, open standards. In recent years, we’ve introduced new efforts for the smart home with Matter, digital access with Aliro, product security, data privacy, health and wellness, sustainability, and green

Can you elaborate on any recent partnerships or collaborations that have been established to advance the mission of the Connectivity Standard Alliance? We have strong relationships with the Wi-Fi Alliance and ThreadGroup and have been able

to work in partnership with them to align on the technology stack that makes up Matter. As Matter is on the communication protocol level, we need transport technologies to enable full smart home control. That’s why Matter from the start has been IP-based and has used Wi-Fi and Thread as its core transport technologies. SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 53

Many of our member companies are also invested in these technologies and are active in their development and direction.

the result of commitments by member companies to multiple stages of authorship, implementation, and testing.

How does the CSA approach software releases for Matter, (version 1.2)? How are these updates focused on improving the out-of-the-box experience for consumers?

We’ve already identified some fixes that can help make the experience better one year that we’ll roll into a future update. For new categories and features, we have active work happening on many different fronts at all times, and once we have a combination of consensus and participation, we can move forward with additions to the specification.

The matter is unique in the world of standards in that we made it a requirement that any products can be updated via software. This allows us to continue to improve the experience for consumers by solving issues that arise, maintaining a high bar for security, and adding new features and device categories over time. We have a bi-annual release schedule currently and have issued two updates to date, one last spring and one in the fall. These updates brought underthe-hood performance improvements in the first update, nine new device categories, and additional new features to expand on the experience. As far as future updates go, our priority first and foremost is in making the experience better for consumers, to ensure we deliver on the promises that we have made around interoperability, reliability, simplicity, and security. Matter specification releases are 54 | SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024

New features and capabilities to look out for in 2024 include support for water heaters and heat pumps, EV chargers, routers, and access points, and potentially cameras, and also a standardized set of energy management features or principles. We’re still planning for two releases this year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Considering the slowdown in the growth of the smart home market, how does Matter plan to contribute to market efficiency and automated network ecosystems? One of the barriers to the broad adoption of smart home devices, and the evolution of the smart home experience overall, has been interoperability. It’s been hard for the industry

to achieve scale when consumers have been locked into particular ecosystems or with a limited choice of devices that work with one another. Complex and inconsistent setup processes, connectivity issues, and security concerns, and reliability have also prevented the smart home from growing. We are still in the early days of Matter, but the unprecedented scale of what we’ve built, in collaboration with and support from 350 global companies, solves these many challenges through open standards and we hope to solve the rest. With the speed at which the adoption of Matter is happening and the innovation happening around it, we have the best chance yet to take the smart home to the next level, making it both mainstream and ubiquitous in our lives. Smart Home-as-a-Service Model: a. With more companies introducing subscription services, how does Matter plan to adapt to the shift towards the Smart Home-as-aService model? We see a lot of potential in the smart-homeas-a-service model, with companies that have experience in the space and also with carriers and operators. In both of these cases, a central hub in the home can be Matter-

enabled and then be the brain for the home, delivering connectivity, local control and control, automation and intelligence, and even applications on the edge. Operators can then recommend Matter-enabled products through their channels, and through packages or recurring billing, and then layer on services on top of these. We have many of the top global operators as members of the Alliance with many more eager to join. What are your plans for the Indian Market? The Alliance is a global organization, and India is an important market for the Alliance and our members. We have member companies from India and we see the potential to have a major impact in the market across our standards and technologies. From support and tools for device and app makers to align with these standards and technologies to leveraging the technology industry’s deep experience for insight and collaboration, to having a bigger on-the-ground presence, everything is on the table for India. We don’t have any specifics to announce regarding India at this time but will keep you and your audience updated when we do. SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 55

INTERVIEW

“Human Centric Lighting (HCL) should be the Fundamental basis of any design and not a Trend.” Architect Kapil Surlakar is a visionary in the field of lighting design. With his company, Light@Work, Surlakar is revolutionizing the way we perceive and interact with light in our built environment. From architectural masterpieces to immersive experiential installations, Surlakar’s creations blend artistry with functionality, enhancing spaces and evoking emotions through light. Through this exclusive interview and stunning visuals, Smart Home World, delves into Kapil Surlakar’s creative process, inspirations, and the philosophy behind his awe-inspiring creations of Light@Work.

Light@Work is one of the most reputed companies in the industry. Can you take our readers through your journey so far? As an architect, my fascination with lighting design and its impact on architectural spaces drove me to seek deeper knowledge in this field. Recognizing the lack of expertise in lighting within our profession and the absence of a shared vocabulary to articulate our design visions, I pursued a Master’s degree in Architectural Lighting Design at Hochschule Wismar in Germany. This marked the beginning of my journey into lighting design. In India, where awareness about the profession of lighting design was scarce, I saw an opportunity to fill this gap. In 2005, I founded Light@Work in Mumbai, one of the pioneering lighting design practices in the country. Over the years, our team has grown to include architects with specialized training in lighting design, as well as architectural assistants. Together, we are committed to promoting the importance of our profession through a combination of design excellence and ethical principles.

It is essential to distinguish between qualified lighting designers and those who merely claim to be professionals in this field. The presence of unqualified individuals and businesses offering lighting design services undermines the quality of work within the Indian design community. Therefore, both clients and design professionals must exercise caution and discernment when selecting lighting design expertise. In an era where ethical practices may seem undervalued, we remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. We believe that prioritizing ethics is not just a moral imperative but also a prerequisite for delivering exceptional design solutions that truly enhance the built environment. Can you mention some of the landmark projects you worked on, which have been a turning point in your career in terms of experimenting with new lighting techniques/ designs or introducing innovative concepts? I started my journey as a One-man office wherein I was introduced to the underSMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 57

construction Akshardham Temple Complex in New Delhi. It was a 92 Acre Site. After a few failed attempts with international Lighting design offices, I was accorded the opportunity to make a presentation and was able to garner their trust. I was entrusted with the task of designing the Lighting for the Temple Complex Masterplan as well as Detailing the Important structures for Façade and Interior Lighting. Technical and product support was provided by M/s Light Craft Singapore and M/s Shimera Project Lighting, Mumbai. Manpower support was provided by the BAPS Trust, which was the client. Those were exciting times. I was armed with New Knowledge and a hope and desire to make a mark. A project of such importance and magnitude, with high visibility is a dream start to one’s career. It was divine intervention, that also guided me and gave me the courage to embark on and successfully deliver the project that was applauded Internationally and was Awarded the IESNA Paul Waterbury Award of Excellence in St. Missouri, USA. This was a project resolved with conventional Light sources before the advent of the LED. It was 58 | SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024

a more creative exercise that applied both Architectural and Lighting design Principles effectively to create the desired installation. We are currently involved with Many projects of that Scale, which include Residential Layouts, Heritage Sites, Commercial Buildings, Infrastructure projects, etc. Some solutions are enabled more effectively by the technology, and we are in the process of Installing Media Facades and Content-based solutions on Infrastructure projects. Today Technology is at the forefront and new conventions are being set. However, our strong belief is that the Design process and input that effectively use the various technologies appropriately, with experiences and knowledge gained over the years, holds the design in good stead instead of blindly adopting technology without relevance and feasibility. We see technology as an enabler but still believe it’s the subject knowledge of the designer that dictates the appropriate use of the same. As a member of IALD, you have presented many case papers at international summits. What are your views on the importance of Lighting Design in a project?

I am not a member of the IALD. I was a member of PLDA which is now defunct. Light is an entity, a force, that is directly connected to Human well-being. The very fact that we wake up in the morning is that sunrise suppresses the melatonin secretion into the bloodstream, which leads to awakening. There are other aspects of how light affects the physical health, mental and psychological health of humans and other living organisms. Lighting can be effectively used to emotionally manipulate human response by altering visually induced perceptions. These are the aspects that are very important in facilities that work 24/7 in environments that are completely cut off from natural daylight. It is also a very important tool in Retail and sales. One must evaluate the project based on what one wants to address and achieve out of the situation to benefit the occupants. Today, the talk largely revolves around the efficacy of the Light sources and the basic CCT, and CRI discussions. The most misused word today is “LUX”. Unhindered Proliferation of Technology is further confusing the consumers and

making them lose focus on their intended tasks. Technology is great, only if used appropriately, with knowledge. Lighting is of utmost importance to any project. Unfortunately, a large emphasis today is only on the visual rendition of Architecture, which gets noticed and recognised, similar to the loud `Social Media Influencer, whereas the more scientific aspects of lighting, the non-visual effects, more relevant to Human Health and well-being are not yet being widely recognised and accepted. The amount of light pollution in the urban pockets of India is also responsible for lifestyle changes, leading to disturbed sleep cycles, resulting in serious Health hazards. A good Lighting design is sometimes such that you enjoy the space without any discomfort and yet do not see anything spectacular. What is the biggest innovation in the lighting sector? How has it revolutionized the entire industry? The biggest Innovation that changed the norm SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 59

was the LED. It brought about a paradigm shift in the way lighting design could be perceived. The LED made the light source compact and easy to conceal. It brought in flexibility and the possibility of various forms. Changed the way it could be addressed and communicated with. It was now intelligent. What was missing in the early generation LED and is being now addressed effectively by most is the quality of light that the LED emits. The spectral quality of light which is the most critical aspect defines the degree of performance of the light source for varying applications. As a Lighting Designer, which lighting control brands do you prefer? There is a plethora of Lighting Control Systems 60 | SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024

available. New systems and signal protocols emerge regularly. Systems vary from hardwired, and hybrid to wireless systems. The developers or manufacturers are indigenous or multinational with varying degrees of capabilities. Every project has a specific requirement, and the control system is ideally selected as per the role it must perform. Some systems offer highly specialised user interfaces, which command the client’s attention and therefore end up being the deciding factor. However, the decision for a control system is evaluated on the scale of the project, the system capabilities, ease of use, sturdiness, User interfaces for aesthetics, the dimming and control protocols and signals used, ability and ease of scaling up or down. A strong deciding factor of the cost of the system.

What are your views on the Smart lighting industry? According to you, in which sector (hospitality, commercial, residential), is traditional lighting getting rapidly replaced by smart lighting? “Smart Lighting” is a marketing term used to loosely describe the various technologies that have made lighting addressable and responsive within defined parameters. The knowledge of the available technologies and their “smart” application in the design of the lighting system can result in a smart system. Smart lighting technologies allow you to program light sources w.r.t intensity and colour, or to render the installation into static or dynamic modes. It can also be used to get feedback from the system to monitor power consumption and failures, which allows to maintain an effective and efficient system. Applications could be across all sectors; however, the related costs have a better return on larger systems. How do you foresee the Smart Lighting Industry 5 years down the line in India? The Potential is huge. However, the knowledge of these systems and their working has to reach the end users, through the right channels, including the consultants and designers who guide them. I experience resistance to the dissemination of knowledge, and this creates impediments to a knowledgeable acceptance and application of these technologies with the confidence they demand. I hope technology and its benefits are conveyed appropriately, unlike some brands that use film stars and celebrities to promote technology, using glamour and with no relation to technology or knowledge. Human Centric Lighting (HCL) is a futuristic trend in the lighting industry with health and mental wellness being the top benefits. What are your views on the same? Again, HCL is the approach based on the understanding of the non-visual effect of light on humans and on other living organisms. Any educated Lighting Designer would study this as a part of the curriculum. Application is Key. Every design, be it architectural, interior design, or Landscape, in any scale, is designed SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 61

to meet the needs of humans and end users, Lighting Design should be no different. HCL should be the Fundamental basis of any design and not a Trend. A deeper knowledge and understanding can help to deliver specialized solutions specific to Health and Wellbeing. As the smart lighting market is fragmented into various segments – such as type, applications, end-users, and distribution channel, how does Light@Work provide the best lighting solutions that suit consumer needs? Light@Work is a Design Consulting Company, with educated and qualified Lighting Designers. We ideate, conceptualise, and resolve the Lighting design for any project collaboratively, aligning with the goals of the project, client, and other Lead Consultant/s to achieve the end goal. Light@Work defines the Lighting strategy and the appropriate technology, detailed specifications, and resources. All this is done within the financial framework set by the client. Where the financial boundaries and technological aspirations do not align, we ensure that the same is informed to the client in a transparent manner, enabling him to decide to increase 62 | SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024

the budgets or curtail the aspirations. All in all, communication with well-defined solutions, options and cost implications is Key to getting a client decision and progress towards the desired outcome. Tell us about the user experience with IoT and AI automation systems as the future of Smart Lighting. IoT or Internet of Things refers to a system of communication between various devices in the system with the help of sensors and actuators which helps in addressing and

monitoring any system remotely or through a control user interface, wired or unwired, through cloud computing. These are largely system management tools that allow the monitoring and efficient use of resources deployed. This however does not help to achieve the right ambient lighting unless the core lighting basics are adhered to. This, therefore, can truly be termed as a smart Lighting system design, and not smart Lighting. Your views on LED revolution and lighting control. What are the latest trends in Lighting Systems and lighting controls? The LED is ever-evolving, and we are now able to discern and achieve LED sources with high spectral performances. The continued development in the LED source is encouraging for a good visual quality of light. As for the Lighting Control systems, the new trends are moving towards scalability and wireless communication protocols, largely applicable in large facilities or urban-scale lighting projects. How important is collaboration with a system integrator while doing a lighting project?

A system integrator essentially is a technician who has the knowledge of the various components of a designed system, not essentially from a single manufacturer. It is ideally his duty to test and guide on the compatibility of the various components of any system or provide suggestions for suitable alternatives for compatibility. It is with this feedback that the designer can streamline the system design. The Integrator then has to ensure that the system is made operational as desired and responds to the signals in a way it has been designed to function. A knowledgeable system Integrator is a Key collaborator in a lighting project that relies on any form of automation. What is your future vision for your Company? The future for Light@Work is to continue doing creative and meaningful work that is in line with our company motto, “Ethical Design Excellence”. We are developing partnerships and exploring design solutions with the new technologies and hope to expand our geographical reach beyond what it currently is. We want to grow without compromising on the Ethical practices for business. SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 63

Unlocking Smart Building KNX IoT Connectivity

Drive your Digital Transformation with Cascoda of all shapes and sizes in commercial building automation have been asking for wireless IoT solutions to make this happen, KNX responded to this challenge by releasing KNX IoT Point API (KNX IoT). The basics To ensure backwards compatibility with the other KNX media, the KNX IoT specification in the KNX system specifications group (3_10_5 KNX IoT Point API) describes:

In the third of this series of articles on KNX IoT, Bruno Johnson and Wouter van der Beek explain the fundamentals of KNX IoT Devices Digital transformation has been one the main strategy topics on company board meeting agendas for the last few years. The opportunity to develop digital services from cloud-based applications requires Internet protocol (IPv6) based network connections to edge devices that become the customer interface. Business 64 | SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024

• A new transport layer based on IPv6, e.g. WiFi, Ethernet and Thread-based networks. • A new communication/message protocol that allows: • The configuration of device is talking to which device. • The support of S-mode message • Capable of the following communication modes o Point-to-Multipoint, Connectionless (Multicast) o Point-to-all-Points Connectionless (Broadcast) o Point-to-all-Points Connectionless (System Broadcast) o Point-to-Point, Connectionless o Point-to-Point, Connection-Oriented • Using the same functional blocks as the other KNX transport layers (volume 7). Note that the KNX devices without configuration are servers. E.g. the configuration of the devices will cause that the xxx will send The Technology stack IPV6, the IPV6 means that the devices can be communicated with IPv6, regardless of the used physical layer. Hence it means that

Ethernet (including PoE), WiFi and Thread is supported. Note that Thread is IPV6 based. Discovery To communicate over IP, one needs to know the IP address and port of the KNX device. To obtain this data, 2 different discovery mechanisms are used. mDNS discovery is a protocol that uses multicast DNS (mDNS) to find devices and services on the local network without knowing their IP address. It is also known as zero-configuration, Bonjour, or Avahi. It is widely implemented for smart home devices, wireless Arduino devices, printers, speakers, network storage devices, etc. It works by sending packets to every node on the network to resolve host names and query for services. It can be used with DNS Service Discovery (DNSSD) to browse and resolve services based on either the host name or the service. It only works for the .local top-level domain (TLD). mDNS discover allows discovery by: - Serial number - Individual address - Programming mode The CoAP discovery is a special CoAP request, to discover the resources of a known host. To discover the host, a multicast request may be used, but must be supported by the server. “localhost” is the address of the device itself. CoAP discover allows discovery by: - Serial number - Individual address - Programming mode - Discovery of a device contains a specific data point - Discovery of a device that contains a specific functional block Telegram transports The next level up is communicating over IPV6 using Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). This is the layer that transports the KNX telegrams from the sender to the destination. This is achieved by using URLs. The easiest way to look at CoAP is that it is equivalent to HTTP,

implementing sending messages in with the request and response paradigm, between a Client (initiator) and Server (responder). The main difference between HTTP and CoAP is that the CoAP headers are in binary format and that CoAP works over UDP. The verbs for issuing the messages are the same: • GET, for retrieval of data • POST, for partial update of data • PUT, for full update of data • DELETE, for deleting a resource And OBSERVE, a new function that is similar as HTTP long poll. The Observe can be used to obtain multiple responses. For example; when the data changes a new response is send to the observe request. To have the same reliability as HTTP over TCP, the CoAP protocol implemented confirmed transfers. Hence the resending of the packets when not acknowledged is part of CoAP and therefore CoAP confirmed request are as reliable as HTTP over TCP. The payload of a message is determined by the content type, e.g. different formats can be supported, similar as HTTP. Payload types The KNX IoT specification is using 2 content formats, each for a different function. The listing of the URLs (data points/functional blocks) to interact with and the interaction with the URLs. The Application-Link format This content format allows to describe hosted resources, their attributes, and other relationships between links. Based on the HTTP Link Header field defined in RFC 5988, the Constrained RESTful Environments (CoRE) Link Format is carried as a payload and is assigned an Internet media type. A wellknown URI is defined as a default entry point for requesting the links hosted by a server. Typical response example: <auth/at>;rt=“urn:knx:fb.at“;ct=40, <dev>;rt=“urn:knx:fb.0“;ct=40, <swu>;rt=“urn:knx:fb.swu“;ct=40, SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 65

<f/rts>;rt=“urn:knx:fb.321“;ct=40 Each line contains - The hosted URL (between <>) - The resource type (rt), designating what it is. - The content type, e.g. 60 for CBOR and 40 for Application-Link Format This allows the client to interact with the device on URL basis. Interacting with a device The URL can be seen as a data point that can be interacted with via key value pairs. The Key value pairs are described with Concise Binary Object Representation (CBOR). CBOR is a binary data serialization format loosely based on JSON. Like JSON it allows the transmission of data objects that contain name–value pairs, but in a more concise manner. This increases processing and transfer speeds at the cost of human readability. However this opens up the documentation: define the payloads in JSON to increase human readability of the specification and have the binary format on the wire. The data for an S-mode message it can be defined in JSON: { “s”: { “st”: “the st value” , “ga”: “the ga value”, “value”: “the value” } } The JSON keys can be replaced with integer

66 | SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024

values to shrink the message even further in size: { 5: { 6: “the st value” , 7: “the ga value”, 1: “the value” } } Security OSCORE (RFC 8613) encrypts the application layer request/response messages between endpoints: not only the payload containing the value associated with a resource is encrypted, but also the request method, the identifier of the resource, and the content format of the payload. In this way, the application relevant data and semantics of the request/response can be protected in a way which is decoupled from the transport of the messages, while being lightweight in terms of overhead. In addition to CoAP, OSCORE also uses the Concise Binary Object Representation (CBOR) for compact encoding and the CBOR Object Signature and Encryption (COSE) for encryption and key derivation structures - both designed for constrained device operations - and further compressed with OSCORE by omitting redundant information. OSCORE has built-in identifiers enabling end-to-end operations over multiple different paths with or without IP.

The message overhead is minimal since OSCORE protects only the relevant application layer information and the amount of data added to the size of the original CoAP message can be as low as 11-13 bytes with built-in identifiers. OSCORE has been instrumental in defining the level of overhead for lightweight communication security and outperforms state-of-the-art transport layer security. Bringing everything together Now all communication mechanisms are explained. KNX IoT device has a set of URLS to

Summary The advantages of KNX IoT are that the new technology is IP-based and can therefore be used over IT networks. It has been developed with guaranteed interoperability with existing KNX technology, and it uses latest underlying internet-based technologies in its specification, thereby making KNX IoT secure by design. The specification has been designed with embedded devices in mind, and the open source stack implementing KNX IoT has been shown to be quite small, running with as little as 512kB of storage memory and 96kB of memory. Crestron Introduces Four New DM NAX Edge Devices for Expanded Home Audio-over-IP “When homeowners invest in an audio system, there is an expectation that they can easily select and use any audio source in their home,” says Michael Short, Sr. Director of Residential & Hospitality Marketing. “From turntables to karaoke gear, it’s simply easier and much more enjoyable when you can seamlessly control your audio system sources in one place, and that is what these four new Crestron audio accessories deliver. Everything that sits on the edge of your network is brought into your Crestron DM NAX system and controlled by the Crestron Home OS for pure listening pleasure.” Each new accessory is available in two flexible form factors: wall plates or surface mounts — a single network connection allows homeowners to control and manage the device through the Crestron Home® OS. Other features include an onboard DSP for tone shaping and signal optimization. All new edge devices are compatible across DM NVX® AV-over-IP, DM NAX Audio-over-IP, AES67, and Dante® audio networking platforms. Additionally, the edge devices are powered via PoE, eliminating the need for local AC power. The four devices include: The DM NAX Wall Plate with Bluetooth

Connectivity and Unbalanced Analog Audio Input and Output: DM-NAX-BTIO-1G — Acting as something of a “wildcard,” DMNAX-BTIO-1G is a wall plate with Bluetooth® communications and analog inputs and outputs that adds Bluetooth audio to any DM NAX Audio-over-IP, DM NVX AV-over-IP, Dante audio network, or AES67 AoIP system. Quite simply, it bridges any audio source to DM NAX technology. Android™ OS users don’t benefit from something like AirPlay® software, so Bluetooth connectivity is a fantastic option to source audio to this wall plate. The DM NAX Wall Plate with XLR Input and Balanced Analog Audio Output: DM-NAX2XLRI-1G —Whether a professional musician, a DJ, or just a lover of incredible sound, this device offers stereo analog audio outputs, allowing seamless integration with a professional audio system. With onboard DSP, users have complete control over tone shaping and signal optimization, ensuring the highest-quality audio experience. There are no messy cables or complicated setups, as this edge device provides power and audio signals through a single network cable. Designed with elegance and functionality in mind, its slim-line single gang housing fits into any environment. SMART HOME WORLD | FEBRUARY 2024 | 71
