MY FAIR LADY A real highlight of the school calendar this year has been the whole school production of ‘My Fair Lady’ which delighted audiences with performances on 7th & 8th March in the Performing Arts Centre.

Six months in the making, with over 90 students from Years 7-13 involved as actors, singers, dancers, members of the Symphony Orchestra and a large production team, this was a wonderful celebration, showcasing the many artistic and creative talents in our school.

There were many outstanding performances, but special mention must go to Sorcha Lydon as Eliza Doolittle, Pearl Young as Professor Henry Higgins, Eden-Marie Derosa as Colonel Pickering, and Flora Dell’Accio as Alfred P Doolittle.

The creative team was led by Miss Woodacre (Director/Producer), Mr Franklin (Musical Director), Mrs Hope (Assistant Musical Director), and Mr Fagan-King (Technical Director).

Professional choreographer, Ms Laura Tyrer, also led dance workshops for the performers.

Many congratulations to the cast, production team and orchestra for all their hard work and dedication, and thanks to all the staff, parents and students who supported the show.

Performance tables for 2018 that rank schools by their GCSE Progress 8 figure have now been published.

Coloma Convent Girls’ School’s Progress 8 figure is an impressive 0.89, which places the school 97th out of 6,300 schools nationwide. This also places Coloma at the very top of the table for Croydon schools for progress to the end of Key Stage 4.

Coloma’s equivalent value-added measure for A Levels is 0.19, exceeding the score of the local grammar schools. This matches the ALPS outcome (A Level Performance System) which had already placed Coloma in the top 5% nationally when measuring progress at A Level.

This is an excellent achievement.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER I am very pleased to share with you our Spring Newsletter which, once again, showcases just some of the opportunities for students to participate in enjoyable activities which enhance and enrich their learning and the day to day curriculum. I would like to thank staff for supporting these events, particularly those that take place out of school hours and at the weekend or during the school holidays. This term, girls have taken part in the Maths Challenge, Spelling Bee and Salters’ Festival of Chemistry and excited girls travelled to France and Germany for their ‘homestays’ yesterday.

Coloma was honoured to host the borough-wide final of the Jack Petchey ‘Speak Out’ Challenge this week, which tests the public speaking skills of students across Croydon, whilst students who prefer a physical challenge have joined training camps as members of the Combined Cadet Force. The back page of this Newsletter indicates that taking part in competitive sport continues to be very popular with students.

Coloma’s bid to retain World Class Schools status is now underway. Our team of students have been a credit to the school – they are truly world class ambassadors!

Many of you will have enjoyed our wonderful production of My Fair Lady. The musical involved girls from all year groups who worked as a team, developing new skills in both off-stage and on-stage roles. The show was just one of a host of excellent musical performances enjoyed by parents this term, both instrumental and choral.

We continue to prepare our sixth form students for the wider world, acting as a springboard to their success via outstanding examination results and a focus on career opportunities. This term, for example, sixth formers visited the UCAS Exhibition, the Royal Marsden Hospital and The Royal Courts of Justice and learnt about apprenticeships in accountancy.

SCHOOL NEWS MATHS CHALLENGE A team of four students from Years 8 & 9 were escorted to Trinity School on 5th March where they competed against 32 schools from around London and the South East in the Regionals. The girls found it an exciting and challenging opportunity.

They said, “The Maths team challenge was really fun and we really enjoyed it. It was a great opportunity to expand our maths skills. The questions were very challenging both in wording and solving. There were people of all different abilities. The biscuits and juice were very nice as well, and they offered seven types of tea!”

WORLD CLASS REACCREDITATION Coloma is currently going through the process of applying for reaccreditation for our World Class School Status. Coloma initially gained World Class School Status in 2016.

The reaccreditation process is very studentled and involves two World Class school student teams working together. The Coloma team of Emma Hiscock, Sarah Gardiner and Hannah Little (Year 12) and Miss Huggett initially submitted a report and signposted evidence to prove that Coloma is World Class. They then carried out an exchange visit with students from St Clement Danes School in Hertfordshire, during which they videoed their partner school in action.

Finally, they hosted visitors from St Clement Danes on Friday, 22nd March, organising a day to showcase Coloma's excellent Teaching and Learning, varied extra-curricular programme and compassionate pastoral care.

We will find out if we have been successful in the summer.

‘SPEAK OUT’ CHALLENGE Jack Petchey’s ‘Speak Out’ came to Coloma on 4th February this year, a unique opportunity for 35 Year 10 students - selected by English teachers to learn the skills involved in public speaking.

At the end of a very productive term, I would like to wish students, staff and parents a happy and peaceful Easter, which will hopefully allow you to share fun times with family and friends and also have time for quiet reflection. I look forward to welcoming all back on 23rd April 2019.

After a day of intense training on the delivery, structure and content of speech making, the girls created their own unique talk on a topic of their choice and presented it with no written cues.

pieces. Their enthusiasm and hard work were astounding and it was incredibly difficult to select winners.

Each girl will receive a Jack Petchey ‘Speak Out’ certificate to add to their portfolio and the winning two will go on to represent Coloma in the Croydon final which we are hosting on the 2nd April.

SCHOOL NEWS WORLD DAY OF PRAYER Friday, 1st March commemorated not only St David’s Day, Patron Saint of Wales, but also the World Day of Prayer led by women.

This year’s resources have been provided by the people of Slovenia under the title ‘Come, Everything is Ready’.

The Year 8 and Year 9 students had the great opportunity to see the French play: “La Salle des Énigmes” performed by Onatti Productions.

They listened and participated for 50 minutes. They had fun in solving a series of riddles, puzzles and clues in order to unlock the door and eventually escape the room.

C’était fantastique!

FRENCH SPELLING BEE Each year at Coloma, our Year 7 students take part in the French Spelling Bee competition, which is a hugely exciting event. Students learn large numbers of key words and also practise the ability to spell those words out in French, and at speed.

During lunch, a small group of teachers came together to pray and reflect on the theme and on how women are empowered in many different ways. The Gospel reading was the story of Martha and Mary and reminded us that sometimes women are so busy ‘doing’ that they forget to take time and just ‘be’, sitting in the presence of God. Beautiful hymns and prayers were shared, taking Our Blessed Lady as a model.

A prayer for women Lord God, we are gathered together today to give you praise and thanks for your loving kindness to us.

Make us aware that it is not just what we do that is important but how we do it.

Help us to be courageous, strong, caring, passionate and compassionate, whatever our age, race or circumstances.

Let us bear witness to your love for all people so that we may be peaceful and joyful women.

The three students from each Year 7 form who were able to translate and spell out accurately the most words in one minute recently took part in an exciting inter-form competition to decide which Coloma students would then go on to the regional final against many other schools.

Our three students who, accompanied by Mrs Hickey, travelled to the regional final, all did really well, and they deserve many congratulations. So well done to Jaliza Stuart from 7Y, and to Francisca Rios Durkin and Elizabeth Willis from 7W. Elizabeth now goes through to the National Spelling Bee final, which is an amazing achievement. We wish you really well in the National Final, Elizabeth!

Many congratulations to all our Year 7 students who have learned and practised so hard for the Spelling Bee, and thank you so much, Mrs Hickey, for organising the Spelling Bee at Coloma and for offering this opportunity to the girls.

CHINESE NEW YEAR To celebrate Chinese New Year on Tuesday, 5th February, the school’s caterers, AIP, presented a special themed menu. The food on offer included Chinese sticky chicken, sweet chilly vegetable stir-fry, steamed rice, oriental mixed vegetables and orange drizzle cake.

To enhance the theme, the dining hall and counter areas were adorned with Chinese decorations.

SCHOOL NEWS CCF TRAINING CAMP

CCF LEADERSHIP CADRE On the weekend of the 22nd-23rd March, a group of Cadets from Army and RAF sections went on a leadership cadre together.

On Friday night, to be tested on our confidence, we presented on topics relating to the Army and RAF.

On the 11th January, the CCF cadets had the opportunity to go on their first CCF Training Camp of 2019.

Whilst there, they gained a lot of new skills including leadership, weapon handling, teamwork and cooperation. Cadets led and participated in many exercises including two night exercises in the Urban Training Centre. Within this centre, they were involved in searching run-down houses wearing camouflage cream and bush hats to blend in with their environment.

They also hunted for the ’enemy’ during their night exercise in the dark and were able to watch from the lookout tower over the people on patrol.

Waking bright and early on Saturday morning, having slept at Longmoor, we departed for Pirbright, a Phase 1 Army Training Centre.

We improved our shooting skills by using the DCCT (electronic shooting range) and then developed our teamwork, courage and determination on the obstacle course.

During the afternoon, we each individually led a command task. This is a challenge designed to test problem solving and logical thinking skills under time pressure. This proved to be a difficult but rewarding exercise.

Overall, the weekend highlighted everyone’s strengths and areas for improvement, providing some very useful feedback.

PARIS TRIP It was an early start 5.45 at East Croydon to catch the Thameslink which would take us to St Pancras. But we all made it; three teachers and 13 sixth formers on our way to Paris. We even had time for a coffee before we boarded the Eurostar! This was the start of an action-packed two-day trip and it was fantastic.

We arrived in Paris just before noon and made our way to our very upmarket youth hostel in the Marais district of the city, for lunch. We were served a generous threecourse meal and after a short break we made our way out onto the streets to start our Amélie-inspired tour of Montmartre.

We took the Métro and then walked for miles in beautiful sunshine, stopping occasionally to take in different places of interest. Later in the afternoon, we took a boat trip up the Seine where we admired all the great buildings on each bank with the water glistening in the sunshine.

restaurant, we went to see the Ionesco play ‘La Leçon’ in Théâtre de la Huchette which was really entertaining. This play has been running in the same theatre in Paris for more than fifty years! After the theatre and dessert, we made our way back to our accommodation on foot, passing by the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral and L'lle de la Cité.

The second day started early with breakfast at 7.30 and our first appointment thereafter at the Musée d’Orsay via the Louvre. The Musée d’Orsay, a former train station, was filled with many beautiful works of art including an impressive collection of Impressionist paintings. After some time spent admiring the many paintings, we made our way to Galeries Lafayette where we had lunch and managed to squeeze in some souvenir shopping before finally

walking to the Palais Garnie for a guided tour of this wonderful opera house.

Before our Eurostar journey back to London, we had another taste of French cuisine in a typical Parisian brasserie. A perfect finish to what was a wonderful two days in this beautiful city. We got back to East Croydon around 10 o’clock, safe and sound, our heads filled with great memories.

SCHOOL NEWS SALTERS’ FESTIVAL OF CHEMISTRY On 27th March, four Year 8 students represented Coloma at a Salters’ Festival of Chemistry at Imperial College London.

Jennifer Obeng-Nyarko, Violet Price, Ricci Rogan and Arthusaa Yogarajaa Viraspillai made up the team to compete against other schools from around London. They took part in two practical chemistry-based challenges in the laboratory, one set by the Salters’ Institute, and one by Imperial College.

The girls worked brilliantly as a team and showed off their practical skills.

The day ended with a lecture featuring several explosions and exciting demonstrations. Although the team did not win, the girls really enjoyed the experience of working in a university laboratory.

UCAS EXHIBITION AT LONDON’S EXCEL

IKEA TRIP GCSE Design Technology: Product Design students have now begun to make their final products for their non-exam assessment. As part of their research and development, the students went to Ikea to compare, test and evaluate various joining and finishing methods which they could then apply to their own products back in the workshop.

Students found the visit a very positive and beneficial experience.

ROYAL MARSDEN VISIT

On Monday, 25th March, 100 Year 12 students attended the UCAS Higher Education Exhibition in London’s ExCeL. Now that the final term of the academic year is fast approaching, the Year 12s have begun exploring their post-18 options and considering routes towards their future careers. The UCAS Exhibition had representatives from more than 160 universities and higher education institutions in attendance, from Russell Group universities to conservatoires, apprenticeship openings to training camps with the RAF. The girls thoroughly welcomed the chance to weigh options, ask questions and investigate courses and future pathways.

ACCOUNTANCY APPRENTICESHIP TALK Kitty Streek (a former student who left Coloma last year) visited the BTEC and A Level Business classes at the end of the Autumn term to speak to the girls in regards to apprenticeships in accountancy.

Kitty Streek was able to successfully secure an apprenticeship at EY during Year 13 and having been through the application and interviewing process herself, was able to talk from experience and give the girls first-hand advice. The girls learnt a lot about the different areas of accountancy and were able to understand better the professional qualifications that can be gained through an apprenticeship position.

Students studying A Level Physics in the Sixth Form visited the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton on 1st March. The visit helped to support their option this year of medical Physics.

During the visit, which was carefully timed to avoid disruption to patients, the Coloma students saw various different types of machines either for the diagnosis, or the treatment of cancer.

PERFORMING ARTS DRAMA AND THEATRE NEWS The Drama Department has been exceptionally busy this year with a wide range of opportunities for students of all ages.

Both GCSE and A Level Drama students have attended theatre trips to The Old Vic Theatre in London to see productions including ‘Sylvia’, a musical based on the life of Sylvia Pankhurst starring Beverley Knight, ‘A Christmas Carol’ based on Dickens’ novel, ‘Wise Children’, a romp through theatre history, and ‘The American Clock’, a rarely performed vaudeville by Arthur Miller.

Year 11 students also participated in three in-school workshops led by professional practitioners from The Old Vic to enhance their understanding of the productions. These provided fantastic learning experiences in preparation for examinations and were highly entertaining and enjoyable!

WIND, BRASS & PERCUSSION EVENING

STRINGS EVENING This year’s Strings Evening took place on Wednesday, 6th February. The audience was treated to an eclectic mix of performance by students from all year groups.

In her first concert appearance, Amaranna Agbonye in Year 7 kicked off the evening with her rendition of Greek Wedding by Ed Huw Jones. She set the tone for a wonderful evening, demonstrating the dedication and talent that we have at Coloma.

The Coloma Orchestra came out in force, performing a playful Habanera from Carmen.

The evening concluded with a stunning performance by Jessica Dugard of the notoriously difficult Allegretto Poco Mosso by César Franck.

VISIT TO THE ROYAL COURTS OF JUSTICE

Two Year 8 pupils bravely played solos – Amy Lam gave us Over the Rainbow on her oboe and Rosie Ellis played Romanza on the trumpet.

Year 12 Law & Politics students visited the Royal Courts of Justice in early March. After a guided tour around the Courts, they participated in a question and answer session with five judges which was filmed. The recording is now being made into a mini documentary to be shared with the rest of the judiciary to demonstrate an activity that can be done to encourage wider participation in the legal profession.

This event is part of an initiative called Open Justice which is aimed at helping students understand how the legal system operates and to assist in changing stereotypes that may exist about those who work in law. It was particularly appropriate that Coloma students were participating in this event on International Women’s Day.

The students were really inspired by the judges who explained how they ended up being judges. According to a year 12 law student Funmi, the day was “Very informative, interesting and eye opening” and Lucy thought the day “… gave us a fascinating insight into the judge’s perspective when deciding sentences”.

The judges’ frank discussions helped to dispel the idea that you have to come from a certain privileged background to be a judge. This trip will be followed up by another trip to Croydon Crown Court on Saturday, 11th May which has an open day where everyone is welcome. Coloma students are planning on participating in a mock trial in the court. This fits in with the aims of the A Level Law course to give the pupils lots of opportunities to engage with the legal system.

This year’s Wind, Brass & Percussion concert took place on a very cold, snowy Tuesday evening in January.

As usual, there was a good variety of instruments and pieces. Antonia Mazuri and Kezia Barton delighted us with their marimba playing, accompanied on the vibes by their percussion teacher, Ms Landowski.

The saxophones made an impressive contribution with a modern piece by Nayana Brown; a 1920’s jazz song by Cole Porter played by Chantal Quadrucci and a Ravel piece played very soulfully by Alannah Tierney-Elbert.

PERFORMING ARTS JUNIOR ADVENT CAROL SERVICE On 20th December, Year 7 and Year 8 pupils, together with their parents, joined to celebrate the Junior Advent Carol Service.

This year, the venue was Croydon Minster, which delighted all with its stunning architecture and beautiful decoration, and provided a memorable experience for the pupils to sing in a venue with inspiring surroundings and acoustics.

Parents were delighted to hear the Junior Choir, St Anthony’s Singers and Year 7 Choir sing rousing carols, which were further complemented by solos from Jessica Obace, Alannah Keane (on the violin) and signing from the BSL Club.

Throughout the service, the readers told the story of Christmas with maturity. A special mention goes to Molly Rickard in Year 7, who sang in all of the choirs, read from St Luke’s Gospel and took part in the BSL Club.

SPRING INSTRUMENTAL EVENING Our Spring Instrumental Evening this year kicked off with two lively pieces from the school’s recent musical, ‘My Fair Lady’ – I Could Have Danced All Night, sung by Sorcha Lydon who played Eliza in the show and I’m Getting Married In The Morning, sung by Flora Dell’Accio as Alfred Doolittle.

The Senior Percussion Ensemble made the audience jump when they started their Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by turning out the lights and starting with a very loud drum beat underneath the seating. Senior Strings ended the first half with a wonderful rendition of Fiddle Dance.

The second half of the programme raised the volume with a more contemporary feel, starting with three pieces by The King Drummers, followed by our two rock bands playing with attitude. The Jazz Band’s lovely version of Over The Rainbow brought the concert to an end, and the audience left agreeing they had had a most enjoyable evening.

SUTTON MUSIC FESTIVAL 2018 In December, Niamh Walsh in Year 13 had great success at the Sutton Music Festival, firstly by winning her section of Musical Theatre for 16-18 year olds and then going on to win the overall cup as she got the highest award in all the Junior Musical Theatre classes. Well done, Niamh.

The service concluded with a magnificent performance by our Music Ambassador, Maryam Wocial in Year 13, of O Holy Night.

CHAMBER MUSIC EVENING The annual concert at St Paul’s Church in Covent Garden is one of the highlights of Coloma’s music events for both girls and staff. Once again, the hard work of all concerned resulted in a beautiful array of Photo credit: Katia Muscara Photography pieces and many breathtaking performances from our instrumental ensembles, St Cecilia’s Singers and some solos from our top musicians.

St Cecilia’s Singers opened the concert with the beautiful Da Pacem by Enns. Hannah Swadling and Maryam Wocial stunned the audience with The Flower Duet from Delibes’ opera Lakmé. Katie Makulska gave a beautiful delivery of Brahms’ Intermezzo in A Minor and Lydia Hervey delighted everybody with her flawless rendition of the first movement of Poulenc’s Sonata.

Members of the public were welcome to listen to the rehearsals in the afternoon in which arrangements from Handel, Bach, Mozart and Dvorák showcased Coloma’s impressive standard of chamber music.

Naturally, the very high standard of performance was only possible thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of not only the girls but also their teachers and of course the Music Department. The evening was a tremendous success with the vision of ‘Laborare est orare’ exalted through the music.

SPORTS PE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TERM As always, the Coloma PE department has been a hub of activity with hundreds of girls choosing to spend their lunchtimes, after school and even their early mornings taking part in physical activity. Many of our recreational clubs have been popular with lots of girls choosing to attend gym club, fitness blast and lunchtime badminton and basketball club. Below is a summary of our successes this spring term with so much more still to come!

NETBALL Year 7 Netball The A team recently placed 2nd at the Croydon Schools Sports Partnership Netball tournament, narrowly missing out on 1st place. They also competed with real determination at Surrey Schools First round, just missing out on qualification for the finals. The B & C teams have also had very successful seasons. The B team won the Croydon League and at the End of Season Croydon Tournament, the B team came 1st and the C team came 4th.

Year 8 Netball The U13s have had a good season, displaying some excellent skills at Surrey Schools. The A team also played well at the Croydon Cluster Tournament where they came 3rd. The U13B’s placed 3rd in the Croydon League and were runners up in the End of Season Croydon Tournament.

Year 9 Netball The U14s had several fantastic games this term, showing the strength in both the A and B teams. The A team displayed some excellent skills at the Croydon Cluster Tournament where they finished as undefeated champions. The B team was also unbeaten in the Croydon Schools’ League and has been crowned Croydon Champions.

Year 10 Netball The U15A team has had a challenging season missing out on qualifying for Surrey Finals. Despite this, they have had many

successful wins against local schools and continue to go from strength to strength.

The B team finished in 3rd place in the Croydon League and ended on a high when they were crowned Croydon Schools Tournament Champions.

Year 11 Netball The Year 11s have had a great season. The A team played exceptionally well at the Surrey Schools first round but just missed out on qualification due to goal difference.

The B team came 3rd in the Croydon League and placed 3rd overall at the End of Season Croydon Tournament.

Senior Netball The 2nd team ended their season undefeated in the Croydon League for the second year in a row. The 1st team suffered heartbreak as they narrowly missed out on a place at Regional finals this year. The girls also performed exceptionally well at Surrey Finals despite the wind! Although they didn’t make the semi-final, the girls can hold their heads high knowing they beat the school that won in the group stages.

FOOTBALL The U12s have had a great season this year and anyone who has watched them knows that there is plenty of talent! Training sessions have been well attended and the girls have thoroughly enjoyed their friendly fixtures. The U16s have also had a great season and were unlucky to be knocked out in the Quarter Finals of Surrey Schools. At Croydon level, the U14s and U16s are still top of the league and overall Croydon Champions.

SWIMMING Coloma's swimmers have been out in force this year competing at several friendly and competitive galas with more girls than ever donning their costumes, caps and goggles to represent the school. There were strong performances in both individual and relay

races at the Croydon Schools Galas, with the junior team placing 3rd overall.

DANCE The Coloma Dance Academy recently competed in the London Heat round of the Great Big Dance Off. The Great Big Dance Off started in 2013 and provides opportunities for school children to enjoy participation in dance and experience performance on a stage. The girls have worked extremely hard to rehearse their dance titled Roxanne and their commitment and hard work paid off as they placed 29th out of 70 schools.

The Dance Academy and one of our Year 7 classes will be performing in the Jack Petchey ‘Spring Sharings’ at Ravenswood school at the start of next term and will be battling for a place at the ‘Step into Dance Live!’

TRAMPOLINING On Thursday, 28th January, 19 girls from Years 9-11 competed in the Croydon Schools Trampolining Competition. The Over 14 ‘Novice’ team won 1st place overall with Krysia Mawer taking the individual gold and the Over 14 ‘Elite’ team came 2nd.

Coloma student called up for England netball!

England Nets has grown and developed over the last two World Championships that have been entered, coming away with a gold medal on both occasions.

Following a series of open events & selections that involved over 200 players, we are excited to announce that one of our 6th form netballers, Marney RossJohnson, has been selected to represent England U21s at the next World Championships.

Huge congratulations and we wish her every success in Cape Town later this year.
