Smar t Cit y Net work s Awarded Contract Renewal with NRG Park RENE W ED PA RTNERSHIP TO CRE ATE STONGER, SA FER W I-FI NE T WORK
Smart City Networks announced today that NRG Park has renewed its contract as the provider of internet and telecommunications services to Houston’s/Harris County's premier convention, entertainment and sports destination, continuing more than 30 years of partnership. Smart City is the nation’s leading telecommunications and technology services provider for the convention industry, and works with over 39 convention centers across the country. “Smart City provides peace of mind – not only through our technical expertise, but through our commitment to worldclass service,” said Mark Haley, President of Smart City Networks. “We are proud to continue supporting NRG Park and believe that together we can continue to create a vibrant and energized environment fueled by the highest levels of customer and guest satisfaction.” The multi-year contract was finalized in June by Smart City Networks and SMG, the operator of the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation managed property. The contract includes expanding Wi-Fi coverage in NRG Center and NRG Arena with the installation of new state-of-the-art equipment. The upgraded equipment and bandwidth will increase coverage to high-density levels. It also includes upgrading the existing firewall to make sure guests receive the best Wi-Fi and enhanced security and safety while using their devices at NRG Park. “The new technology is a huge advantage for anyone coming to NRG Park,” said Codey “Ike” G. Eichenour, Smart City’s General Manager of Technology Services at NRG Park. “Show managers and attendees expect a seamless Wi-Fi connection – now they will have a stronger and safer network, allowing them to have an overall better experience.” “Finalizing this contract renewal was a great step toward maintaining NRG Park as a world-class destination,” said Paul Darst, Director of Technical Services at NRG Park. “Smart City shares our dedication to creating experiences that are driven by customer and guest satisfaction. As technology within the tradeshow, convention and event industry continues to change, Smart City’s expertise and professionalism has been invaluable. They are an important partner of NRG Park.”

Quarterly overview from Smart City’s president, Mark Haley.
Having been in the business of being a service partner to convention venues over the past 30 years (yikes!), I’ve figured out that this is a pretty simple business to be successful in. To grow your business, the formula is easy; renew all of your contracts and just win one or two new ones and you’re golden.
06 C E N T E R U P D A T E S What's new in our buildings? Special updates from the field.
Riiight!! Easier said than done. Competition increases each year. Our venue partners are required to issue RFP’s for our services on a regular basis, and justifiably, we need to prove our value on a regular basis.

20 A N N I V E R S A R Y LIST
Anniversaries of team members throughout the company.
Fortunately, Smart City was founded on core principles and daily basics that keep all of our team members focused on delivering that value. I focus on one or two of those business principles in each issue of the Pinnacle in the President’s Corner to demonstrate examples of how we live those principles. Collectively, these 30 principles and daily basics keep us from veering off course whether we are in year one of a contract or the last year of the agreement. The reason I bring up the entire set of values of Smart City as opposed to just one or two, is to point out the underlying culture of our people and in particular how this culture has contributed to the record number of contract renewals over the past three years. Having our people focus on our core values day in and day out ensures consistency in service delivery from Orlando to Seattle to Honolulu and to the NRG Park in Houston, Texas, our most recent partnership renewal. This renewal was particularly sweet because NRG is where Smart City was founded. Back in 1984, Smart City (then part of Centel Business Systems) installed its first telephone switch in the Houston Astrodome. Our 33year partnership with the Houston Sports Association and subsequently, SMG had begun. Please take a look at our motto, business principles and daily basics on our website to understand the core tenets that enable great 33-year partnerships like ours at NRG. To the Top!

ANNOUNCEMENT
Smart City Networks Completes System Upgrade to Improve Wi-Fi Capacity and Speed Nationwide Smart City Networks has rolled out a nationwide upgrade of wireless networking services that will enhance speed and flexibility in wireless offerings at 39 convention centers and other venues managed by Smart City throughout the country. The system-wide implementation of the MikroTik captive portal included installation of 234 new gateway devices at Smart City facilities, increasing capacity and speed of custom wireless solutions. The upgrade means that Smart City can develop numerous custom wireless networks and hot spots within each event in addition to basic free wifi and daily wifi at the venues it operates in, whether it’s for one mega show or numerous events occurring at the same time. The MikroTik Cloud Core Router is an industrial grade router that Smart City’s engineers have customized specifically to the wireless environment in convention facilities. Smart City has utilized the MikroTik line of routers over many years and it has proven to be a robust and reliable device to facilitate wireless solutions for all cusotemrs, whther individual attendees , exhibitors or event planners. However, similar to putting premium gas in your BMW, Smart City’s engineers have developed customized configurations that enable it’s high-density networks to perform at ever increasing levels with each new event. Over a year of preparation, designing, and testing by Smart City's systems, wireless, and network engineering teams led to the development of of proprietary coding turning the MikroTiks into redundant and fault tolerant workhorses for Smart City's array of convention space-specific wireless networking products. Through this upgrade, Smart City now has the ability to offer a wider array of wireless networking products ranging from individual WiFi Hotspots for exhibitors to full building wireless buyouts. To ensure that all of Smart City's customers and our convention centers' visitors can remain connected, we reallocated over 7,000 of Smart City's directly allocated public IPv4 addresses to support this new infrastructure. “Over the past few years, we’ve seen a triple digit increase in the wireless adoption of events,” said David Langford, Vice President, Technology for Smart City. “By investing in this infrastructure, we’re ensuring event attendees can have a multifaceted experience that extends through all their devices, not just their laptops.” The additional capabilities added by this upgrade now allow Smart City to rapidly respond to our customers' needs and desires when it comes to having wireless for their events and booths. Smart City team members can create or modify wireless network configurations within seconds—not minutes or hours¬—so that our customers are up and running when they need to be . Through a combination of Smart City's local on-site teams as well as engineering and development teams, we are able to offer our customers wireless products at a level of service, customization, and rapid deployment not seen before in the industry. Additionally, the captive portal provides the opportunity for the event to have a custom splash pages that can be sponsored by event exhibitors, increasing revenue for show producers. “This is another illustration of Smart City’s commitment to providing more complex technological solutions for our clients and industry partners,” Langford said. “This installation will ensure the attendees at our clients’ events have an experience that meets, if not exceeds, all of their expectations.”

GM INSIGHT LiFi and the Bright Future of Wireless Communication
JA ME S Z A RH A RCHUCK — DATA OPER AT IONS PROFE S SION A L , WA LT ER E. WA SHING T ON C ON V EN T ION CEN T ER
Harald Haas, the co-founder of PureLiFi, coined the term LiFi at a TED Global Talk where he discussed the idea of supporting wireless communication through lights. The future may soon consist of LED light bulbs connected to a wireless mesh network bringing highdensity connections to residential areas and eliminating wireless communication dead zones. Visible Light Communication (VLC) is not a new technology. In fact, it is quite old. Its history can be traced back in the 1800s with Alexander Graham Bell’s photophone, which used modulated sunlight to transmit speech. VLC is the transfer of information through the use of the visible light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. LiFi, one subset of the optical wireless communication technologies, uses VLC between 400 and 800 THz—much higher than most used radio frequencies. A majority of people are probably more familiar with the lower end of the RF spectrum that supports WiFi—2.4GHz and 5GHz. Devices equipped with special Light Emitting Diodes (LED) can wirelessly send and receive data 100 times faster than WiFi. In a perfect lab environment, LED communication can reach speeds of 224Gbps. The LED bulbs are dipped and dimmed, up and down, at extremely high speeds not visible to the human eye, contrary to the “visible light spectrum” description. Then, another device with a photodetector reads and converts that light into electrical signal. LiFi’s strengths make it a highly convincing and worthy investment. The technology’s throughput reaches speeds never thought possible, and its wider bands support more users than WiFi. However, it has weaknesses, too. Due to its higher frequency, its range is shorter and the area it can cover is smaller. Using LiFi would mean using more transmitters, which increases deployment cost. Because VLC systems need light to communicate, it requires near line-of-sight communication. Devices don’t necessarily need to see each other to exchange data because light can bounce off objects but the waves cannot penetrate walls. Although LiFi’s narrow coverage is a disadvantage, it also offers a security benefit. With shorter range, the footprint is easier to control, and wireless hacks can be avoided. Will LiFi replace WiFi in the future? Probably not. But both technology can supplement each other. LiFi will be able to support more clients without channels overlapping, higher speeds when necessary, and stronger security when required. It can also be used in electromagnetic sensitive areas where the use of RF could be hazardous. LiFi, indeed, is a promising technology that will, hopefully, continue to develop and improve wireless communications.

Technician - Smart City Hawaii
May
Since Daniel began his tenure with Smart City, he has been both diligent and comprehensive in his efforts and reporting of his daily tasks and long term projects. Being one of Smart City’s newest facilities, there was a substantial amount of infrastructure work to be done to elevate the Hawaii Convention Center to Smart City standards. This has meant tackling every IDF, re-punching/re-cabling hundreds of internal circuits into fresh patch bays. Daniel did not shy from the challenge nor did he ever cut corners in his assignments, moreover, he was thorough in his execution and documentation of his work. The result of which has improved productivity, simplified their ability to deliver services to clients and set the Hawaii team upon a solid platform that can propel efforts there for years to come.
