Giving Back

T

HIS quarter’s Pinnacle really highlights the heart and soul of the people in our company. Yes, you will still see examples of excellent customer service and plenty of testimonials from show clients on the contributions that our team members made to the overall success of their event. However, with the event schedule tapering off in late November and into December, it gives our various teams an opportunity to Give Back to their local community. A few years back, we asked a small group of field staff to organize community service projects nationwide for this timeframe, and we now have our annual Month of Service each November. Throughout the year, each local team and our corporate team identifies a specific local organization to support with volunteer labor.

Smart City Networks’ Month of Service Initiative

S

MART City teams across the nation spent the month of November giving back to the communities for our second annual Month of Service initiative.

The program started last year as just a week of service but, this year, it was extended to a month to better assist the communities and help even more people throughout November. During this Month of Service, Smart City team members volunteered to support charity organizations that were thoughtfully selected by the local Smart City team to provide the most significant impact possible to those in need. A food drive competition to see which team could collect the most food to donate to a local food bank was held throughout the month.

“Last year’s Week of Service was a huge success, so this year we wanted to create an even greater impact,” said Mark Haley, President of Smart City Networks. “By expanding to a Month of Service, and adding a food drive competition, we gave our teams even more opportunities to give back to their hometown while having fun in the process.”

Local teams scheduled volunteer work with charity organizations including USO, Dallas Life, Random Acts of Flowers, Habitat for Humanity, Hands on Orlando, Humane Society, Ronald McDonald House, Make-A-Wish, local food banks, and many more. With each organization being specifically selected, we hope we were able to help ease the burden on families in need during the holiday season.

Emergency Preparedness Mark Baratti − Operations Manager, Smart City San Diego

RIORITIZING the need to prepare for emergencies is challenging to do when everything is operating normally. Smooth sailing and all systems going is a comfortable place to stay, until the unplanned and unexpected occurs.

While writing this article, an entire swath of the city power, including the San Diego Convention Center (SDCC), went down. It happened to be the final day of move in on one of our biggest shows of the year. If it happened one week ago during Thanksgiving weekend, it would hardly have been an issue, but we don’t choose a good time for emergency measures to kick in. Preparation is key.

One area of preparedness that is easy to overlook is 911 systems. With an abundance of cell phones on the move and hardline telephones that can be relocated between rooms almost daily, it can be impossible to get a reliable location to emergency services. In a complex facility like a hotel, a school campus, or a convention center, having

a system in place that can pinpoint an emergency call can save lives. There are several methods to consider when it comes to getting crucial location information to emergency services. Some include utilizing Automatic Location Identification (ALI) databases, Location Information Servers, or an Emergency Gateway Appliance (EGW). These and an understanding of Enhanced 911 (E911) services can significantly improve safety in the time of need.

Focusing in closer to our Smart City team members, there are a few processes that can be implemented to aid in safety. Simply maintaining a list of staff cell phone numbers is an easy first step. Creating a text message group from this list will allow you to deliver a reverse 911-like message to all staff in an immediate emergency. In the case of an evacuation, the ability to do an electronic roll call will save time in verifying the safety of all team members. Applying the

same cell phone text addresses to a group in Outlook will make this process doubly useful, allowing important emergency information to be delivered to staff cell phones in short order.

Finally, there is the need to be prepared for power outages. Smart City Networks makes careful plans to keep edge and core equipment up and running on uninterruptible power sources (UPS), but in some cases, that is not enough. When intermediate equipment goes down due to power loss, it can affect other needed equipment down the line. Studying network diagrams and verifying backup power on all devices between critical points A & C is a part of the detailed analysis that needs to be done to ensure important connections stay connected.

Today the power in the city was out for just under two hours. Having checked for points of failure and installing adequate UPS units we were able to maintain internet and phone services throughout the facility. In this case, we were prepared and overcame the unexpected. Preparation when the seas were calm paid off in the storm.

Something as simple as knowing what type of morning drink that your client likes and getting it for them, can drive small problems away. I have found, that by going above and beyond for customers, can help diffuse minor issues. Showing the client, that you care not only about their business but about them, can sure go a long way.

Send them emails that are not just about business, wish them a Happy Holidays, or find out their birthday and send them a text!

Center Updates Long Beach Success at ComplexCon 2018

T

HIS past October the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center hosted the 3rd Annual ComplexCon Event. The event is “an expertly curated convention and festival bringing the world of Complex to life” according to their website. As part of the effort to maximize the event’s social media presence, and to make sure their attendees could participate in the numerous raffle giveaways via the event app, Smart City was tasked with ensuring every attendee would have access to fast Wi-Fi. With daily attendance estimated to be 15,000 people per day, before the event, it was necessary to upgrade the network to ensure it could handle the large number of users. Additional Wireless Lan Controllers and Router Boards were added to the network to evenly distribute users of the attendee network over several devices allowing faster processing of network requests which sped up the overall user experience on the Wi-Fi.

In addition, we temporarily deployed separate Wireless Access Points (AP’s) for the exhibitors that ordered private networks for their booths. These additional access points were placed in the booths and put on Radio Frequency channels that were different than the channels being used by the attendee network keeping the attendee network from interfering with the numerous Exhibitor Hotspots that were deployed

Average bandwidth usage on the Attendee Wi-Fi network was 1Gbps download and 600Mbps upload during peak usage. ComplexCon Show management was pleased with the network’s performance and the speed of the Wi-Fi at this year’s event. The ComplexCon event will return to Long Beach in 2019.

A huge thanks to Jim Snook (Regional Operations Director) for the coordination of support and arranging supplemental personnel for this event. There is an old military axiom, “there are no bad teams, only bad leaders,” so thank you, Jim, for your outstanding leadership. Big thanks to the “Home Team” for all the work that went into preparation and execution of this event. Larissa Franzen (CSSR) and Devin Wolery (Technician), you both truly laid the groundwork that set us up well for this event. Our focus is and will always be to learn, both in victory and defeat. Always forward! This event was a big win for us in 2018. Two large repeat Smart City clients that have left our shores testifying that the network had never performed better (ARVO 2018, being another big win earlier this year with stellar remarks).

Smart City Team Hosts ServiceNow The Santa Clara Smart City Team hosted the must-attend ServiceNow event in Santa Clara, Now Summit is the place to learn, connect, and get inspired by visionaries, customers, and partners.

This one day program attended by over 1,000 people offers keynote presentations, educational sessions, access to partner ecosystem and additional networking opportunities in ExpoNow.

As our year comes to a close, I reflect on Smart City Networks at the HCC and her 760th day of operation. I am smiling now as I type this and recall the age-old wisdom of Mark Twain, “It ain’t the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” Ain’t that the truth, Hawai’i.

With over 100 hardline drops throughout the facility many requiring hub and cabling to build several small individual networks, Mitch knew he’d require some additional help to take care of this event’s needs. He reached out to several other Smart City centers, and a number of technicians came to Tampa, along with some additional gear to supplement Tampa’s already robust network.

Not only did the team stay ahead of the installation schedule, but addressed all pop-up orders promptly. Services ranged from standard data drops, fiber connections, dedicated circuits, phone lines, wireless hotspots located in several booths and two customized wireless networks. One Wi-Fi network was engineered to support 1,000 concurrent users and the other for 100 concurrent users with higher speed bandwidth.

NE of the highest priorities is to keep people across the globe safe and secure. By supporting our military, we assure they have the information needed to complete their missions and stay out of harm’s way. Gathering intelligence is the greatest way to ensure we meet this goal. Using satellites, planes, and other aircraft, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), the data is compiled and disseminated to provide a clear picture of threats and challenges to our success. How does this industry keep up with changes and trends, introduce new technology, and create an environment conducive to networking? Communication between those who design and build these technical marvels and the end users who constantly have new challenges to meet in the ever-changing environment is the goal of the GEOINT Symposium.

With over 250 exhibiting organizations and 3,500 attendees the GEOINT Symposium is the most prominent gathering event of this industry. Held at the Tampa Convention Center this year, it was imperative that every aspect of technology was provided flawlessly and at the highest level of customer service. Smart City is proud to have worked with this event for several years, not only at the Tampa Convention Center but also at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Show Management, VIPs, Exhibitors, and Attendees utilized almost 500 Mbps of bandwidth throughout the event, but Smart City prepared by having two Gigabit Circuits coming into the building from different sources with automatic failover capabilities. Checking on customers throughout the event assured that all the hardline services were working smoothly and the Wi-Fi networks performing to their capacity.

After the event, Mitch provided Show Management with a detailed usage report including the amount of bandwidth and how many users were connected. This report was beneficial, not only showing specific usage for the 2018 event, but also providing recommendations as to how to improve services and ordering the correct products for the future.

MART CITY provides technology for a wide range of events, from a single hard line drop and phone line to an elaborate network supporting thousands of concurrent users. Providing technology for events with tens of thousands of attendees have challenges all their own. Imagine sitting with thousands of fellow fans in your home stadium, watching your favorite football team make a fantastic play to win the game. You need to share this with the world in real time.

That’s the expectation of fans at any NFL game.

NFL games require connection services for the needs of internal facility staff, concession’s point of sale, team support, coach’s communication, television production, the news media, and 65,000+ fans which can be taxing on a wireless network. In the Lucas Oil Stadium, home to the Indianapolis Colts, Smart City ensures that each game is provided the highest level of customer service and maintains a network that can support those specific demands. News media alone requires large amounts of bandwidth to communicate their stories to the world in real time. Television production utilizes its own network including satellite to send and receive media throughout the country. The facility requires a robust network to assure fan safety and comfort by connecting security camera systems, automated temperature control, lighting and every other aspect required for facility upkeep, maintenance, and security during a highly attended event.

Smart City’s onsite team monitors the network to ensure there are no issues with providing service to every aspect of the game. The nearly 700 access points throughout the stadium have supported over 20,000 concurrent wireless users.

At peak times the network is moving over 2 Gigabits of data per second. The overall data transferred during one game has been calculated at 4 Terabytes which is equal to 4,194,304 Megabytes of data going to and from the internet.

HE Miami Beach Convention Center’s three-year, $615 million renovation project was completed in time for the 17th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach on December 6-9. The renovations added 10 percent more space and took away the 1980s-era pastels. The new, hurricane-resistant exterior features approximately 500 angled aluminum fins intended to evoke waves.

Educause is the largest community of technology, academic, industry, and campus leaders advancing higher education through the use of IT. Charlotte City Council Approves Expansion

N November 26th, Charlotte City Council gave their final approval on the $110 million expansion that will start in spring of 2019 and continue through 2020. The expansion will add 93,000 square feet to the center, which will require the movement of the DAS.

HE Smart City team in Atlantic City had the pleasure to volunteer at the Jethro Memorial Presbyterian Church’s community breakfast program. Ryan McCart (General Manager) and James Casperite (Technician) manned the buffet line and helped serve over one hundred breakfasts with a smile, doing their part to make the local community a better and brighter place. The first event was so successful that the team committed themselves to assist with every monthly event from now on – offering cooking, serving, cleaning, and anything else that the church might need to continue helping the people in Atlantic City.

Jethro Memorial Presbyterian Church has been providing breakfast every 3rd or 4th Saturday of the month to the community of Atlantic City, New Jersey since 2016; as a commitment to helping those in need. They are currently feeding the homeless, seniors, and individuals and families who are financially struggling. As a small local congregation, they cannot tackle the larger issues of housing, employment, etc.; however, they are comfortable and pleased to offer a hot meal to those in need. So far, they’ve been able to provide breakfasts from contributions from their membership, donations from other agencies within the community, and funding from the church itself.

The combined humanitarian efforts of the church family and philanthropic groups like the Smart City team will ensure Atlantic City continues to grow into a stronger, healthier, and happier community.

The Duke Energy Convention Center (DECC) hosted the 13th consecutive Fall Feast on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, 2018. Established in 2005, what started as 100 guests and 40 volunteers at Washington Park has transformed what Thanksgiving represents in downtown Cincinnati. Over 4,000 guests and 750 volunteers joined to make the Tri-State’s largest entirely free Thanksgiving Day celebration a huge success. Over 8,000 coats were donated, of which, 5,000 were given away on Thanksgiving at the Fall Feast coat shop. Over 500 haircuts were given local hairdressers including celebrity barber ‘Dave the Barber.’ Thanks to Mercy Health, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and Cincinnati Eye Institute over 450 medical check-ups were given at the Fall Feast Health Clinic. Arnold Chavez (General Manager) volunteered to assist in the crowd control during the opening of the gates and served meals in the Grand Ballroom to over 4,000. A special thank you goes to the DECC and its’ partners in service, include Spectra Food Service & Hospitality, Prestige Audio Visual and Creative Service, and Smart City Cincinnati, and the many staff who worked tirelessly to make Fall Feast and Thanksgiving Day a special day for the community.

A few days prior to the feast, to supplement the coat drive, the DECC hosted its’ 2nd Annual Downtown Coat Drivein & Drop-off. Over 750 coat donations were received during the 7-hour event, thanks to excellent media coverage promoting the event. Arnold Chavez participated in setting up the event and collecting coats and other winter gear during the drive-in and drop off.

For Smart City’s Month of Service program, the Santa Clara team provided sponsorship to the Giving Thanks to Heroes program. The Homefront America program provided military families with a full complement of groceries and a turkey certificate redeemable at their local grocer or commissary.

N October, Smart City employees at the Los Angeles Convention Center participated in Breast Cancer Awareness Month’s Wear Pink Day to raise awareness and support those who have been touched by the disease.

Facts about breast cancer you may not know: • About 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer.

• A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.

• Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women.

• Breast cancer death rates have been decreasing since 1989, especially in women under 50.

Our gift helped to provide 250+ military families with a complete Thanksgiving dinner during the holiday season.

N November 19, Michael Nolan (General Manager), Christopher Delane (Technician II), Vanessa Cauthen (Customer Sales & Service Manager), and Darryl Galmon (CSSR) visited the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte. They baked eight dozen “Peanut Butter Blossom” cookies. The cookies were then set out throughout the week so that the kids residing in the house can enjoy, as well as their families that are there by their side. The team also organized and cleaned the pantry, two full-service kitchens, and dining room and then they were able to mingle with the kids and their families, providing a smiling face and casual conversa-

Reno Keeping the Community Beautiful This year in Reno we decided to participate in the Annual Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) Event. Getting to know other people in the community and helping clean the Truckee River and parks were very rewarding. Smart City Reno and others from around town were out by the river pulling weeds and raking up leaves by the piles. When all was said and done the difference we all made was tremendous. It is easy to forget how beautiful our surrounding areas can be with a little bit of love from the people around. There were good vibes and laughing along the way with some blisters and tired backs, but all was worth it in the end. It was pleasant to see the families, students, and workers come together to give back to the community.

The KTMB Event Coordinators greatly appreciated our contribution which motivates us to continue to help and be more involved in future projects. After all the hard work, the Event Coordinators hosted hotdogs, chips, cookies, and drinks for everyone involved.

KTMB is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that has

been dedicated to beautification, promoting a clean community, cleanups and education in the Truckee Meadows for over 25 years. KTMB is an affiliate of the national organization Keep America Beautiful. Locally, we work with businesses, municipalities, community groups and individuals to keep our open spaces, the Truckee River, business corridors, and neighborhoods beautiful and clean for all to enjoy.

The first two blankets took about 3 hours each to make. Then the second two took approximately 2 hours each to make.

Counting in planning, buying the materials added about three more hours.

Then, washing the final products was another 4 hours. So, in all, about 17 hours went into the process of making the Welcome Blankets for the Ronald McDonald House.

Santa Clara Adopt-a-Family

HE Santa Clara team participated in the Adopt-a-Family program during the Holiday Family Assistance 30th Christmas of providing help with food, clothing, and bringing the holiday spirit to farm workers in the Santa Clara Valley living in the Assumption Church Parish area. The Holiday Fam-

enjoyed eating lunch, visiting Santa, and opening gifts. For some of these children, it’s the only Christmas they’ll enjoy. One of the highlights was when Santa and host Steve Raleigh, local newscaster and weatherman, did the countdown to the opening. Right as Santa says “Merry Christmas,” there’s a massive cheer over the excitement and joy. Arnold Chavez (General Manager), on behalf of Smart City Networks, donated $200 worth of gift for the kids.

uth has proven to be a dedicated and consistent worker who has been diligent in learning HR processes at a very rapid pace. She is diligent and continuously strives for perfection in all she does. Ruth has established mutual respect between herself and corporate/field team members. She has gone above and beyond to assist managers with new hire paperwork, PARs, etc.
