How I wish it were blazing already.” Luke 12:49 This scripture was a favorite of Blessed Mother Marie-Rose Durocher. May our SMA community be inspired as Blessed Mother Marie-Rose was to ignite passion within ourselves and others for the values and beliefs we hold dear at St. Mary’s Academy.

Emily

I am delighted to introduce our new Alumnae and Community magazine, “Casting Fire”. As many of you know, we chose the name Casting Fire from a piece of scripture that was a favorite of Blessed Mother Marie-Rose, the foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM). We believe that our alumnae are truly casting fire upon the earth in all the ways they lead, inspire, and leave lasting impacts on their families, their communities, and our world.

Ever since the Sisters founded a Catholic school for young women nearly 165 years ago, St. Mary's Academy has blazed a trail and set the standard for being THE PLACE for nurturing and educating extraordinary women leaders. We are grounded in our faith and in the mission and charism of the SNJM Sisters — tenacious, courageous, and dynamic women who continue to play an important role in our school today. To say it is humbling to be entrusted with carrying on their ministry is an understatement, but I couldn't be prouder or more committed to leading SMA into our bright future ahead.

As we approach this monumental 165th birthday, we are reminded we share this milestone legacy with the founding of the state of Oregon. This unwavering commitment to kindling and inspiring the whole person — emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually remains just as strong today as it was when we opened our doors so many years ago.

Though we cherish the legacy of the past, we continue to challenge ourselves to be relevant, forward thinking, and to embrace the rapidly changing world that our young women face today. We are educating ethical critical thinkers, innovative problem solvers, and passionate leaders grounded in faith. We also find ways to center joy and belonging daily — something so critical to young people today. As a current parent myself, I can assure you that my own daughter feels and experiences this and it's so powerful to watch.

My top priorities are to continue to ensure a deep commitment to our teachers — they are the heart of the school, create access for any young woman who will thrive at SMA through our generous scholarship funds, and enrich the student life experience by investing in our physical spaces. I am thrilled to announce the renovation of the Richard & Virginia Mathews Gymnasium — elevating our athletic program and creating a living room for our students. The gym has already hosted sell out homecoming dances, pep rallies, and packed stands for our fall volleyball season.

This fall has been filled with so many wonderful moments of grace and laughter. I hope you will feel a taste of that as you read through the inaugural issue of this magazine and take a moment to step back in time and celebrate all that is happening today.

More than anything, please accept this as an open invitation to join us on SW 5th Avenue. Our doors are always open, and we can't wait to welcome you HOME. Wishing you a blessed holiday season and so many gifts in the new year.

Announcing Our New Principal—Liane Rae!

It is with incredible excitement, pride, and gratitude that we introduce you to our new principal, Liane Rae. Last spring, Liane agreed to step into the Interim Principal role for the 2023-2024 school year and has exceeded everyone’s expectations. She has been named our permanent principal effective July 1, 2024.

We are so fortunate to have such a talented, committed leader who has the unwavering support of the Sisters, board, leadership team, faculty, staff, parents, and students. Congratulations Liane!

I never miss an opportunity to drop into the Chemistry lab during lunch.” For Liane, knowing every student’s name is imperative and she would even welcome a pop quiz the next time you are in the building.

The importance of all-girls, Catholic education has never been lost on Liane Rae. When asked, “why SMA”, Liane shared that all-girls Catholic education was transformational for her and her family. While she is not an alumna of SMA, she attended a school that held those same transformational abilities. Another aspect of St. Mary’s that has always inspired Liane? The SNJM Sisters. While the SNJM mission and values have always resonated with Liane, one rings true: daily–hospitality.

Liane has been a part of the St. Mary’s community since 1992 in a multitude of capacities including Cross Country Coach, Computer Science teacher, Assistant Principal of Curriculum Design and Instruction and this year, Interim Principal. While each role has looked a bit different, one thing continually rings true – the importance of creating and supporting lifelong learners among our students and educators. Liane is continually looking for ways to support our teachers in their craft and in turn give our young women the best educational experience possible.

When asked what a perfect day at SMA would look like, she shared “The day would start with catching up

Who Are the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary?

SNJM

Responsible for the founding of St. Mary’s Academy in 1859, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) is an international congregation of Catholic Sisters, Associates, and Lay Consecrated who are “dedicated to the full development of the human person through education, social justice, contemplation, and the arts.” The work of the SNJMs occurs in settings including schools, local parishes, prisons, immigrant centers, clinics, and in programs and community that see a Gospel path to promote systemic change.

The SNJM Sisters are a vibrant community that promotes the following core values which are at the heart of the order’s charism. Charism is a spiritual gift, given by the Holy Spirit, and means “a gift from God for the good of God’s people.”

Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary

In addition to their core values, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary have Corporate Stands as part of their ministry and justice. These Corporate Stands include migrants and refugees, water as a human right and public good, and against trafficking in women and children.

In the spirit of Blessed Mother Marie-Rose Durocher, who founded the order more than 160 years ago, Holy Names Sisters, Associates, and Lay Consecrated continue to promote the education and development of the whole human person. This ministry continues today in the schools sponsored by the Congregation.

SNJM Sisters have educated tens of thousands of students from pre-school through graduate levels. At St. Mary’s Academy alone, SNJM Sisters have impacted the lives of every one of our over 11,000 alumnae. Holy Names Sisters have served as counselors, librarians, coaches, club advisors, infirmarians, directors of religious education, and mentors. Their outreach includes diocesan and parochial schools and under-served communities.

St. Mary’s continues to be sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, and belongs to the SNJM Network of Schools. In addition to SMA, these schools include Academy of the Holy Names in Albany, NY, Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa, FL; Holy Names Academy in Seattle, WA; Holy Names High School in Oakland, CA; Ramona Convent in Alhambra, CA; and St. Mary's Academy in Winnipeg, Canada.

SNJM Values at St. Mary’s Academy Today St. Mary’s students are introduced to the history of the school and the founding Sisters beginning in their freshman Theology classes. As part of the curriculum, students learn about the founding Sisters and their journey, as well as the modern-day mission, core values, and Corporate Stands of the Sisters of the Holy Names. Those values are present today in every aspect of St. Mary’s culture, across academic department, and incorporated into athletics, and all co-curriculars.

Core to the St. Mary’s experience is a robust and ongoing culture of service. Hands Full of Heart is a service day that SMA holds for the senior class in October, and the sophomore class in May. TA groups visit service sites across the city to affirm our commitment to liberating action, and experience the healing power of human connection, spreading love throughout our community.

The annual St. Mary’s Christmas Families program has been a beloved tradition of service for many years and brings together the entire school community in support of local families at Christmas. In addition, there are many clubs and activities who plan service activities.

The annual Border Immersion Trip is an opportunity for 10-12th grade students in Spanish 4, Honors, or AP Spanish to immerse themselves in life and ministry at the Nogales, Sonora (Mexico) border. This journey brings our mission as an SMJM school to life, embodying the Sisters’ commitment to promote justice, provide services to those who are poor or marginalized, offer hospitality, and respond to the needs of women and children. .

In preparation for this pilgrimage, the Honors and AP Spanish curriculums at SMA include comprehensive components on Spanish-speaking countries that give a broader understanding of religion, politics, language, and culture. Students gain an awareness of US policies such as Title 42 and the asylum application process and how these systems have a significant impact on people's lives. They discuss tangible ways to work toward transforming these policies.

SNJM—Our Charism in Action

“I definitely had a much more black-and-white view of immigration before,” Madison A. ’25 explains her newfound understanding of life at the border, “humanizing those involved in the crisis—both the migrants and the border patrol officers—made it clear how complex it was.”

Madison met two young brothers who had arrived at the border from Venezuela. They shared with her their journey through the Darién Gap, one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes between North and South America, and how they made their way through Mexico by riding atop freight trains.

“Even though we had read about a boy with a similar experience, hearing children recount what it was like for them and the atrocities they witnessed was extremely impactful.”

The Moab Immersion is highly experiential, taking classroom learning and translating that to hands on experiences. The trip directly connects to the social justice curriculum in Theology classes alongside the SNJM Corporate Stand on water as a human right.

Students return to their classrooms to present a comprehensive look at what they’re studying alongside their real-world experience.

As we head into St. Mary’s Academy’s 165th year of educating young women, we are proud of the legacy gifted to us by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. We know staying grounded in our shared mission and values means we are prepared to continue the legacy for the next 165 years and beyond.

Programs like the Border Immersion Trip are a powerful way we are preparing our students to be global citizens, dedicated to service and leadership.

Ella K. ’23 summarized this transformative experience as “a more nuanced understanding of all the different factors involved in migration while also increasing my feelings of sympathy, care, and compassion.” St. Mary’s Academy is grateful to coordinate with existing Catholic and collaborative networks that engage in research and advocacy to transform local, regional, and national immigration policies, and for our students to do the same. .

In the spring, St. Mary’s students can participate in another immersion Trip to Moab, Utah. Students spend five days at Canyonlands Field Institute, camping under the stars, navigating the river, exploring side canyons, and working as a team to reach the destination, all while learning about the unique geology, ecology, and human history of these iconic river stretches. This trip is connected to the charism and mission of the SNJM Sisters focusing on stewardship of the earth, respect for diversity, and care of our common home.

Despite the changes, some things remain – the rich student life experience at St. Mary’s Academy.

As always, students are learning and growing in an environment where curiosity is encouraged, relationships are fostered, and challenging yourself is rewarded with personal successes that everyone celebrates.

All Girls

Some Things Never Change Student life may look different than years ago, but the same spirit of St. Mary’s is alive and well. Each generation of girls that walk these halls have their own student life experience filled with learning, discovery, and confidence.

The day-to-day life at St. Mary’s certainly looks different today than it has in years past – tablets have taken the place of newspaper clippings, the state-of-the-art Fabrication Lab (FAB Lab) has broadened student access to the sciences, and the pay phone is long gone, replaced by visits to local food trucks and trendy coffee shops.

Today, SMA students keep a fulfilling schedule, unique to their interests and convictions. The vast array of clubs, affinity groups, co/extra-curricular activities, leadership programs, sports, and electives allow girls to push beyond what they think they might be capable of and discover new skills and passions. The evolution of these activities mirrors the changing tides of each era at St. Mary’s. From timeless classics like the Marian Singers, to contemporary additions like robotics and coding, student activities have evolved to embrace the diverse interests and talents of each new generation.

Affinity Groups, such as Asian Pacific Islanders Club (APIC) and Jewish Student Union (JSU), create a nuanced environment for students to express themselves in ways they wouldn’t be able to in the classroom or sport field. “I love celebrating the holidays together. I also appreciate the important discussions we have, having a safe space to learn what other people like me experience,” Madison A. ’24, shares her own experience in JSU. We are exceedingly proud of the drive, passion, and participation our students embody year after year.

Alumna, SMA mom, and Vice Principal of Student Life, Ashley Sheridan ’01, shares her experience returning to SMA as an administrator, “My time at SMA was transformational – I became someone new and confident in these halls… Girls can explore who they are without the noise of typical high school issues. You try on something, set it down, pick up something else over

and over again until it all fits into who you want to be right now.”

Just as Ashley described, St. Mary’s students are given a unique set of tools and opportunities to discover what they like and go for it! That’s what the student life experience at SMA has been and always will be.

These tools are not limited to academic resources (though plentiful), they’re a testament to the sisterhood and legacy that transcends time and will follow them for years to come.

Believe It. We Do. At St. Mary’s Academy, our students are always pushing the boundaries of what is possible. From award-winning arts and STEM programs to top 10 sports teams, SMA has something for everyone to excel in. But who are the modern SMA girls?

We believe in expressing your creativity.

More than of SMA students are involved in our award-winning fine arts department – ranging from theatre to music to visual arts to dance. This year, our students will participate in two plays and a musical – each giving them the opportunity to learn what it means to be on stage and behind the scenes.

SMA is home to more than 60 student-led clubs, 10+ affinity groups and DEI leadership opportunities.

Clubs range from debate to cooking, Esteemed literary magazine, Escribe Maria, to improv and Oregon Battle of the Books to Tri-M Music Honors Club.

We believe in pushing boundaries.

Students at SMA have the unique opportunity to be involved in activities like Dragon Boats or The Beta Blues–the only all girls robotics team in the state of Oregon and one of around 100 internationally. Our students get to hold every role on the team including engineering, management, and coding, instead of being pushed into marketing or more creative roles as they might in a co-ed environment.

(OSAA), St. Mary’s Academy is the only all-girls school to compete in 6A level sports in the Three Rivers League. St. Mary’s also competes in lacrosse under the auspices of the Oregon Girls’ Lacrosse Association.

Two Blues teams compete in Nordic and alpine skiing at the club level under the guidelines of the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association (OISRA).

Class Notes Alumnae Accomplishments and Experiences Sr. Maureen Niedermeyer ’53 Sr. Maureen has been a member of the Benedictine Sisters at Mt. Angel for 67 years. She celebrated her 70th graduation reunion at St. Mary’s on Founders’ Day this year!

Mary Sharon Moore ’68 Three stories from Mary Sharon Moore’s latest book, “Nature Notes: Creation as Companion to the Interior Life,” are featured in McKenzie River Trust’s Winter Writers 2023 series.

Her husband, John, retired in 2018, and after almost 40 years in Anchorage they moved to Camas following their children.

Maureen finds herself rediscovering the PNW and sharing it with her two rambunctious grandsons.

MaryJo Wallo McCloskey ’77 MaryJo published her first book this fall. “When Girls Win” is the story of MaryJo’s journey in the golf arena both as a player and as a collegiate coach—the challenges, the ups and downs, the highs and lows, and mostly the self-awareness and mental toughness tips she has discovered along the way that MaryJo truly believes will help others achieve more.

Elisa deCastro Hornecker ’78 After SMA, Elisa went on to graduate from the University of Oregon with a degree in Political Science & International Studies. She had a career in investment/portfolio management in Portland. “Retired” to raise her three lovely children, all now in their mid-to late 20’s.

Currently, Elisa serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of Oregon, is a resident writer for STROLL Portland Heights magazine, and a member of ninety-nine girlfriends, a collective giving non-profit, where she serves as liaison to grantee partners. Elisa loves to travel with her husband, spend time with family including her Husky, Beau, and gardening.

Aneshka Colas-Dickson ’95 Aneshka was named an Executive of the Year 2023 by the Portland Business Journal. She is the Vice President & CEO of Colas Construction which has been in business for 25 years. Aneshka and her siblings have put Colas Construction on a trajectory that started with residential homes and has grown to include construction or renovation of healthcare facilities, office, retail, multifamily, civic and educational buildings, and affordable housing.

Aneshka focuses the company’s projects on environmental, economic and social sustainability for transforming communities. Through keen financial management, she not only maintained full employment levels throughout the pandemic, but increased staff.

Emily Howorth ’99 Emily’s essay “Bird on a Wire” originally published in the New Letters literary magazine was included in The Best American Essays 2022 edited by Alexander Chee.

Hannah Fredrickson Curran ’03 Hannah lives in Orangeville, Illinois with her husband and 6-year-old daughter, Fern. She is entering her 15th year of teaching elementary school. Hannah is a TeachBetter team ambassador and has presented at multiple conferences on Social Emotional Learning, project-based learning and mastery learning. Most recently she was highlighted in “The Mastery Learning Handbook: A Competency-Based Approach to Student Achievement” by Jonathon Bergman. https://a.co/d/9BylCQC Marie Hanawalt Gouz ’03 Marie and her husband, Steve, moved to a small farm in Oregon City where they raise animals, and are homeschooling their children ages 6, and 8. The family is also in the process of building and redesigning their garden space, definitely an adventure for two city-slickers! .

Adelle Dora Monteblanco and Felicita Monteblanco ’03 Both Adelle and Felicita were included in the 2023 Portland Business Journal 40 Under 40 honorees. Adelle is an Assistant Professor of Public Health at Pacific University and has focused on women’s health, conducting research on supporting and providing health care for pregnant women as well as on disaster preparedness.

Chloe Shilaos ’07 After receiving her B.A. in International Relations and Politics in 2011, Chloe received her B.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences summa cum laude from Portland State University in 2015, and her M.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders with academic honors from University of Houston in 2017.

She is currently a pediatric speech and language pathologist at an elementary school with Springfield School District in Springfield, OR. Chloe also has experience working in pediatric and adult acute care, outpatient rehab, skilled nursing, and private practice. She loves working with students who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/ or students who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) while mentoring neurodiverse speech and language pathology graduate students.

Alexandra Holmes ’10 Alexandra joined the Storm Publishing team in the newly created role of Editorial Operations Director. Alexandra oversees Storm’s editorial systems, project management and audio publishing in an expansive role. .

April Hernandez ’14 April’s chapbook “Getting to Know the Stoveman”, was published by Bottlecap Press. "Getting to Know the Stoveman" is a collection of vignettes that delves into the idea that love is more than big gestures and rather finding its warmth in the small, yet habitual acts of care given by the people around you. Additionally, April participated in Powell’s Books Small Press Palooza in support of this book. To order a copy visit https:// bottlecap.press/products/stoveman Bendu Yeany ’17 Bendu, who was known for her moves on the SMA basketball court plans to enter the WNBA Draft and explore her options to play overseas at the end of her college career with Oregon State University, which is something her late brother, Jonathan would have encouraged her to do.

Madeleine Adriance ’19 Madeleine, currently a senior pursuing her BA in Theatre Arts at Brown University, was commissioned by Oregon Children’s Theatre to write a play for their Young Professionals Company.

The play, titled SPIDER, is about iPad kids, collective trauma, and what we trust AI to do. SPIDER opened October 20 at the Curious Comedy Annex in Portland. In addition to this work, Madeleine has received the Robinson Potter Dunn and the S.R. Steinfeld awards, and has had a production of her full-length play, The Living Ones.

She is completing an honors thesis on ecological disaster in American plays, and has studied playwrighting at the graduate level with Julia Jarcho and Lisa D’Amour.

Abbie Schipper ’20 Abbie won an award for a project she submitted to MIT IDEAS Social Innovation Challenge.

Abbie’s solution, LifeSaveHer works on creating a female anatomical CPR adjunct that will attach over existing CPR mannequins on the market to “provide a realistic, low-cost model for performing CPR on someone with breasts.” This project directly responds to studies showing women are 27% less likely than men to receive bystander CPR when suffering an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. This tool is already being implemented at both MIT and Harvard.

Emily Ashton ’22 After winning the Javelin Throw at the UMAC Championships this spring, Emily Ashton finished second in the country in the event.

Emily threw a distance of 36.24m.

Her second-place finish lands Emily the title of All-American for 2023.

This is the first Women’s Track and Field All-American for University of Northwestern since 2018 and Emily is the eighth All-American in program history.

Amelia Nason ’23 Amelia’s book “poems i shouldn’t have written” was published by Bottlecap Press. The book is Amelia’s debut and is full of poems which are the product of Amelia’s last autumn in high school, encompassing a hectic season of college applications, motherly affect(at)ion, self-portraits in stanza, & wasted intimacy.

Composed entirely without the benefit of hindsight, the collection is achingly urgent as it immerses the reader in nostalgia for the present.

Sister Joan Hansen, SNJM August 15, 1933 - April 7, 2023 Sister Joan Hansen, SNJM, 89, died on April 7 at Mary’s Woods at Marylhurst, Lake Oswego. A Mass of Resurrection was held Thursday, May 4, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of the Holy Names, Marylhurst, Lake Oswego.

The daughter of Hans and Annie Holmes Hansen, Joan was born in Coos Bay where she grew up with her older siblings Lois and Jerome.

Joan had an early interest in music and she developed into a skilled accompanist for her school choir as well as her home parish of St. Monica’s.

In 1953 Joan entered the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary at Marylhurst, receiving the religious name Sister Mary Lauranne. She began her ministry career as a classroom music teacher as well as teaching private lessons in Holy Names schools in Oregon including St. Joseph’s/Sacred Heart Academy, Salem; St. Thomas More and St. Peter’s, in Portland; and Sacred Heart, Medford.

Sister Joan went on to the post-secondary level as a member of the music faculty at Marylhurst College, eventually becoming chair of the department. She also served as a music consultant for SNJM

Her next ministry took her to St. Mary’s Academy, downtown Portland, where she served as president, principal and long-time member of the Board of Trustees. She later was called on by the Holy Names Sisters to serve as an Oregon Province administrator.

She also was a long-time member of the Board of Trustees for Marylhurst College, and later University.

A signature note in Sister Joan’s life was her willingness to rise to the challenge of constantly changing needs, bringing a wealth of personal and professional gifts.

Mid-career, she earned a Masters of Counseling/Psychology from Lewis and Clark.

Sister Joan moved into counseling ministry. She served as a parish administrator at St. Ignatius Parish, Portland, and as the Administrative Assistant for Mary’s Woods at Marylhurst, a continuing care retirement community in Lake Oswego. She continued to offer her talents as a skilled piano accompanist for Holy Names liturgies and celebrations.

Also well-known about Sister Joan was her candy-making skills and the gifting of the finished product to lucky family and friends. Joan was also an avid tender of roses and was recognized in 2007 by Portland’s Royal Rosarians and the Portland Rose Festival for her award-winning blooms.

A Holy Names Sister for 67 years, Sister Joan was predeceased by her siblings Lois Hansen Layton and Jerome Hansen. She is survived by her nieces and nephews and the members of her religious community.

Sister Donna Van Laeken, SNJM ’56 December 10, 1938 – July 21, 2023 Sister Donna Van Laeken, SNJM, 84, died July 21, 2023, in Lake Oswego.

A Mass of Resurrection was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, at Chapel of the Holy Names at Marylhurst, Lake Oswego.

Daughter of William and Martha (Neilsen) Van Laeken, Donna was born and raised in Portland. She joined the Holy Names in 1956, teaching in elementary schools in Oregon, Washington and Hawaii.

With the changes in the Catholic Church after Vatican II, Donna took on new ministry challenges. As a staff member of houses of prayer in Texas and Arizona, she assisted people in their spiritual journeys.

Later, noting the trends in aging in the U.S., she completed a master’s in gerontology and for many years offered compassionate care and comfort to elders. .

A Holy Names Sister for 64 years, Donna will be remembered for her spirit of adventure, her concern for seniors, and her love of sports. She is survived by her siblings, Mary Parsons and Larry Van Laeken, as well as her nieces, nephews, and members of her religious community.

Sister Kathleen Hearn, SNJM ’58 April 11, 1940 – July 14, 2023 Sister Kathleen “Katie” Hearn, SNJM, 83, died July 14, 2023 in Tualatin. A Mass of Resurrection was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, at Chapel of the Holy Names at Marylhurst, Lake Oswego.

Daughter of John and Madeline Bowman Hearn, Katie was born and raised in Portland. She joined the Holy Names in 1958, teaching primary children in SNJM schools and in the Early Childhood program at Marylhurst College.

Completing a master’s in religious education, Katie began working with Hispanic families in Washington County. To prepare, she studied at the American Cultural Center in San Antonio, Texas, and spent time in Mexico where she lived with a local family. .

Her ministry evolved again when she completed CPE training and served as a registered chaplain at two Northwest hospitals, and, on retiring, volunteered for 10 years in pastoral services at Mary’s Woods at Marylhurst.

A Holy Names Sister for 62 years, Katie appreciated beauty and spirituality, loved good conversation and delighted in the successes of others. She is survived by siblings, James and Rita Hearn; her nieces and nephews; and the members of her religious community.

Sister Caryl Bastasch, SNJM ’56 December 6, 1938 – March 19, 2023 Sister Caryl Bastasch, SNJM, 84, died March 19, 2023, in Lake Oswego.

A Mass of Resurrection was held at 11a.m., Thursday, March 30, 2023, Chapel of the Holy Names, Marylhurst, Lake Oswego.

The daughter of Frank and Frances Hogan Bastasch, Caryl was born in Portland where she grew up with her five siblings. After high school, she entered the Holy Names Sisters at Marylhurst receiving the religious name Sister M. Carolyn Frances.

Always a creative and enthusiastic teacher, Caryl taught children from grades one through six in SNJM schools in The Dalles, Salem and Portland. During this time, she completed an MS in Elementary Education.

She later went into parish ministry, first becoming a shared Pastoral Associate for Lincoln County parishes in Newport, Waldport, Siletz, and Lincoln City and then Director of Religious Education for Resurrection parish in Tualatin.

When she retired, Sister Caryl continued to share her pastoral gifts and loving presence as a volunteer at Mary’s Woods, a senior living community, visiting the sick and bringing communion to the room bound.

A Holy Names Sister for 64 years, Sister Caryl is survived by brothers, Paul and Tom; her nieces and nephews; and the members of her religious community.

The Newly Renovated Richard & Virginia Mathews Gymnasium is Complete!

Throughout the summer of 2023, St. Mary’s was hard at work as we launched the first phase of a comprehensive Athletics Campaign. First on the list of strategic upgrades to our athletics facilities and programs was the Richard & Virginia Mathews Gymnasium—ensuring that our entire student body and community would benefit from this central, shared space.

We know that sports and physical activity have far reaching effects on girls that last a lifetime. Athletics and sports play a critical role in childhood development and provide valuable life skills to help with future success.

Through team sports and activities, girls learn the value of teamwork, competition, and how to take healthy risks. At St. Mary’s, 52% of our student body competes as a student athlete and 100% of our students utilize 3. the gym through other classes and programs. .

While the gym is critical to our athletic endeavors, it also serves as a primary community gathering space for pep assemblies, dances, and to invite the public at large to engage in the life of St. Mary’s Academy. It is also our most public facing space and often the first p lace t he community experiences. Every alumna can tell a story of “something that happened in the gym”. It is the place where memories are made and where the community comes together.

This September we celebrated the completion of our newly renovated gym – a space we are deeply proud of. The impact of this space is already paying off in spades, with our volleyball competing at a heightened level this past season, match crowds gathering in bigger ways than ever before, pep assemblies capturing the life of the school and key community events, such as our Food for Thought Tuition Assistance Fundraiser this winter, taking place in this beautiful new space.

The gym renovation included major physical upgrades such as brand new, modern bleachers to replace those dating back to the 1980’s, a state-of-the-art digital scoreboard and sound system – the first of its kind in our league – new balcony seating, fresh paint and design elements, as well as a full remodel of the athletic training room, allowing our student athletes to receive the very best medical care and physical training possible through new, modern medical training technology and equipment.

Between pep rallies, sporting events, parent parties and an all-school free throw contest – this space has become the living room of the school. We are deeply grateful to our lead donors, The Clark Foundation and Mary Mathews Stevens ’80 & Mark Stevens, as well as Mike & Tracey Clark, Candace & Jon Holzgrafe and Brittney Clark ’94 & Chris Brooks for making possible the renovation of our gym and athletics initiatives – elevating sport & wellness for all young woman at St. Mary’s Academy.

It is not often that a family so deeply dedicated to service, generosity, and faith comes along – and The Harold Family is just that. For more than three decades, Bob and Sue Harold have been instrumental to the life of the school, demonstrating a commitment to honoring the charism of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Bob and Sue have volunteered, shared their wisdom and tangible resources, enthusiastically participated in events and fundraising campaigns, and

advocated for the mission of St. Mary’s in every way.

Sue worked at St. Mary’s for a time and Bob served as chairman of the Board of Directors and Finance Committee. Regardless of the roles in which they were serving, they developed relationships with school leadership to help address the greatest needs of the moment to keep the school thriving. They have been invaluable to St. Mary’s and the students served by its mission.

Right in line with the Sisters of the Holy Names, the Harolds have a heart for the underprivileged. Bob and Sue created an endowed scholarship, the criteria for which is based solely on financial need. When Bob’s mother passed away, the Harold family created an endowed fund

that supports wrap-around services, providing funding for students on financial aid who have needs beyond the cost of tuition such as lunch money, bus fare, neurodiverse educational testing, athletics fees, and more.

Bob and Sue were both highly educated and are strongly committed to their Catholic faith, so support of St. Mary’s is tantamount to their life’s values, not to mention their gratitude for the education their daughter Joan Harold Chaney ’94 received at SMA. In recent years, through Bob’s tireless work on the Board of Directors, it became clear that a critical need had to be addressed imminently: teacher salaries. St Mary’s has always endeavored to attract and retain the best faculty for our students, and to do so would require resources from a dedicated endowed fund to meet the growing need of competitive salaries as a supplement to tuition and annual fundraising.

Sadly, in 2021, Sue passed away but not before making advance plans for a cornerstone gift to launch The Sue Harold Endowed Fund for Faculty and Staff Salaries.

As part of the St. Mary’s endowment, the corpus of this fund will remain intact for so long as St. Mary’s exists with a portion of its investment income drawn down each year in perpetuity for teacher salaries.

Mary’s Academy for three decades. Over the course of her tenure, Christina shared an unwavering commitment to the education of young women and the uniqueness of St. Mary’s Academy. She remained dedicated to the mission and values of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary as she helped usher in change and advocated for faculty, staff, and students.

SNJM Catholic values inspired Christina to lead with compassion, integrity, and strong decision-making skills that allowed her to make the hard choices. Her distinguished career began as a teacher at St. Mary’s and transitioned into leadership.

Under her direction, St. Mary’s underwent tremendous change, building renovations, endowment growth, and a shifting Catholic school landscape. Her vision continued to elevate the position of the school and has ensured St. Mary’s will carry on our long history within the University District of Portland.

In honor of Christina’s leadership and legacy, The Christina Friedhoff Endowed Fund in Leadership for Professional Development was established to advance the talents and treasures of our valued administration, faculty, and staff. This fund is dedicated to leadership and professional development opportunities as we continue to invest in the growth of our community.

Respected for their integrity and humility, the Harolds have always given quietly without fanfare, but Bob is not shy about asking others to join him in his appreciation for and support of St. Mary’s Academy and the Sisters of the Holy Names, especially through the endowed fund in his beloved wife’s name: The Sue Harold Endowed Fund for Faculty and Staff Salaries.
