Rural Aid’s supporters answered the call for help with compassionate gusto.

Rural Aid originally set a fundraising target of $750,000, but that goal was beaten around lunchtime on Giving Day, Friday the 10th of December. A revised target of $1 million was reached early this week.

The team used the emerging ‘net protein contribution’ concept to measure the quality and quantity of protein created by cattle compared to the protein they eat, looking at both grain-fed cattle and grass-fed cattle that may eat small amounts of grain.

They found typical Australian grain-fed beef production systems contribute almost twice the human- edible protein they consume, while grass-fed systems produce almost 1600 times.

Sold on the spot: ag land rises 30% Prices of agricultural land in the Southern Downs have risen about 30 percent since the last pre-pandemic year, mirroring the affordability crisis seen in the residential market.

Ben Lubben, who runs Ray White Warwick, points to three main contributing factors: cashed-up tree changers, a marked reduction in stock, and continued interest from primary producers in local land.

Local real estate icon Helen Harm told The Country Journal that she put up a 1.25-acre block of rural land near Maryvale on Friday night for $85,000. In the morning, she had four offers and within 24 hours she had sold the property for $100,000 with a before-Christmas settlement date.

Stories like these illustrate research done by realestate.com which has found that months of strong demand and low levels of listings "mean the total stock of properties available for sale in regional Queensland is more than a third lower than pre-pandemic levels".

The research also finds that the greater Maranoa region has seen a drop of 36.6 percent of available properties for sale compared to last year. In the Southern Downs specifically, stock has plummeted by as much as 80 percent according to sources in the industry.

When asked about available stock, Ms Harm just laughs. She isn't sure what she will put in her normal pages of advertising one week to the next so slim are the pickings.

The Guardian recently reported that the overall median price of Australian farmland value has seen a compound annual growth rate of 10.6 percent in recent years. The numbers are four times the growth rates of residential properties in capital cities in the same time period.

However, Mr Lubben is keen to point out that it is impossible to make sweeping statements about the rising value of agricultural land in the Southern Downs because "every inch of agriculture land is different" and the complexities of putting a valid price on black-soil land in Killarney has no relation to pricing grazing acreage out in Karara.

However, he told The Country Journal that supply and demand has driven up the value of agriculture land by about 30% from what he has observed.

Ms Harm agrees with his estimates and says that buyers who come in looking for high stock carrying capacity are often in for a shock. They want to see "value for their money" but she has had a few buyers who have severely overestimated what, say,

"If you want to get in, get in quick because it's going uphill," he said. "If you try to buy acreage, it's gone in minutes."

Roy Smith

with gerard walsh

After battling against the odds with rheumatic fever as a child, Roy Smith went on to make a massive contribution to the nation in business and Agro Politics.

He was on the National Farmers Federation Executive for 14 years.

Born at Welford Private Hospital in Warwick on December 23, 1935, Roy was one of six children of Henry and Florence Smith, of Willowvale.

His siblings are Henry, Jim, Noel ,Trevor and Meryl (now Kelly). At one stage, they lived in the original five-room farm cottage.

Henry later built “Rioma” as a new family home.

Roy went to Willowvale State School and passed scholarship (Year 8) at a time he lost 18 months of school due to rheumatic fever.

“I had to spend 13 weeks lying on my back with rheumatic fever. Two years later, Dr Dent told me my chances of survival at the time were one in 100,” Roy said.

He went on the school bus to Warwick State High School in 1949-1952.

After leaving school, he started work as an office clerk/salesman for stock and station agents Donovan and Son at Allora.

At the time, the auctioneering business was owned by Frank Donovan.

Later, Roy purchased the building from the Donovan Estate and he continued to trade as Donovan and Son. In 1963, Roy married Helen Cowley, of Talgai, and they made their home in Raff St, Allora, where they still live.

Their daughters Anne-Louise and Robyn are both retired teachers and youngest

daughter Catherine works with the Department of Agriculture in Canberra.

With the high cattle prices in the early 1970s, Roy felt a cattle price crash was on the way and he decided to sell the business to Mactaggarts Primary Producers Co-op Assoc of Brisbane, in September, 1973.

He stayed on for a year as manager and was a licensed auctioneer from 1962 to 2001.

After a fire at Holmes and Co at 42 Herbert St, Allora, Roy and wife Helen joined with friends, Peter and June Stewart, in opening a drapery and haberdashery store to keep the two Holmes and Co staff employed.

The tag line was “The Shopping Spot – The store created for your convenience” . It was opened in November, 1972.

The building is now home to the Allora Pharmacy.

Roy and his brother Jim put in a public tender for Glengallan Station, in 1972, and bought 1640 acres for $121,000, including the homestead. An additional 240 acres was

added at a later date.

“I wanted to invest in an alternative to auctioneering and we ran a grain and cattle business at Glengallan,” he said.

A long career in agro politics started when Brian Smith and Mick Hughes approached Roy to go to the branch meeting of the Graingrowers to help push for more grain storage for Allora.

On the first night, Roy became the depot liaison officer so was to meet with the State Wheat Board every six to 12 months to lobby for more storage and silos for Allora.

“At the first SWB meeting, the chairman invited me to lunch to make my case for more storage,” Roy said.

“I told the chairman I wanted three new vertical silos and he said we might get one.

We ended up with two.”

Such was their farming success, Glengallan Station was awarded the Vince Crothers Memorial Trophy for best dryland sorghum crop in 2003 by the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland Toowoomba Show.

When Don Eather was president of the Queensland Graingrowers Association, Roy was asked to stand against him to be the graingrower’s representative on the National Farmers Federation.

Much to his surprise, Roy won which started his 14 years on the board of the NFF. The Smith family owned the property including Glengallan Homestead and at one time were offered $95,000 for the homestead.“We were approached by the Glengallan continued page 6...

CSIRO study confirms cause of Black Summer bushfires Australians won’t quickly forget the Black Summer bushfires in 2019-20 that burned down more than 24 million hectares, caused 33 deaths from fire and 450 from smoke inhalation.

The CSIRO this week announced that their analysis confirms for the first time the Black Summer fires are part of a clear trend of worsening fire weather and ever-larger forest areas burned by fires.

The Australian study found that the annual area burned by fire across Australia’s forests has been increasing by about 48,000 ha per year over the last three decades. After five years, that would be roughly the size of the entire Australian Capital Territory (235,000 hectares).

The area defined for receipt of DRFA assistance measures is “Communities within Central, Southern and Western Queensland affected by rainfall and flooding, 10 November – 3 December 2021”.

Gerard Walsh: What inspired you to push for the homestead to be retained by the community?

Roy Smith: I used to travel a fair bit and went on a tour of the family home of past United States president George Washington.

I was so impressed with the home, I decided we had to do the same with Glengallan.

GW: How unique was it?

RS: Glengallan Homestead and Jimbour House were the only two-storey homes of the era in Queensland.

GW: What about your involvement in the National Farmers Federation.

RS: I was on the executive for 14 years and served under six presidents. I was awarded NFF’s highest honour for services to agriculture, the Award of Honour.

GW: At one time, Ian was tipped as a future Prime Minister?

RS: Ian wasn’t diplomatic enough to be Prime Minister. The NFF had been formed to take on the union movement which at the time controlled the waterfront, meatworks and shearing industry. Ian was the toughest leader the NFF has had.

Duckweed: pest or green giant?

I was recently at a Christmas party, as we all are at this time of year, chatting to a gentleman about his career in the field of aquatic biology. My interest was piqued because I had, earlier that day, been musing over what I should do about a recent bloom of “duckweed” on my dam. I’m a farmer’s daughter and was raised to understand that duckweed was something nasty and unwanted. So, I asked my new friend if he had any suggestions as to how I might get rid of this pesky weed. His response fascinated me and I’d like to share it in the hope that it might also fascinate others.

My particular variety of duckweed is more correctly known as Azolla and is a native aquatic plant found in still or slow-moving water bodies. It appears green or red depending on its level of sun exposure. As dams are usually fairly sunny, it is most commonly reddish in colour. It is a type of fern, 1 to 3cm in diameter and floats freely on the surface with little roots hanging down into the water. When you have lots of these, they form a mat and can cover the entire surface of the water.

Azolla grows best when it has access to high levels of nutrients and warm temperatures. In particular, it is a great little nitrogen fixer, removing nitrogen from the water and storing it in its tiny fronds. If you harvest it with a big scoop net, you’ve got yourself some top-notch compost as farmers and gardeners alike know the benefits of nitrogen in the soil. Once left to dry for a few hours, it dies, so there is no danger of it contributing to future blooms.

Dead azolla in the water can reduce oxygen levels so if you harvest it live, everyone, including the fish and the garden plants, wins! Now, it could certainly be argued that an azolla bloom is an indication of excess fertiliser in the water, which is not such a great thing but how fabulous to have a native species that firstly tells you that the system has been overfed and secondly, without batting an eyelid, starts filtering out the excess on your behalf.

Once the bloom subsides, you’ll know that your water system is back in sync.

Azolla is not harmful to stock that drink the water or consume the plant.

Azolla does not have a harmful effect on domestic house and garden water. It can provide habitat for aquatic life and reduce water evaporation by up to 20%. Azolla

much warmer than today. The poles were more tropical and covered in forests, seas were much warmer and, in many places, less salty. Carbon Dioxide reigned supreme in the atmosphere. This phenomenon is known as a Greenhouse Climate. Guess who just loved these conditions? None other than our friend, Azolla. In particular, it went berserk in the Arctic seas.

We all know that plants sequester carbon and store it in their biomass, thus removing it from the atmosphere. An acre of mature forest is thought to sequester around 13.6 tonnes of carbon per year.

But mature forests take a long time to grow. An acre of azolla can sequester 6 tonnes of carbon per year. Not bad for a fellow that can double its biomass in 2-3 days.

We set two new farm records at the Warwick Saleyards last week but only have a share of one of the records. with Gerard Walsh Last Tuesday, we sold two vealer steers for 760.2 cents a kilogram which is a per kilogram record for our cattle operation.

The Angus steer owned by Margaret and I made 760.2 as did the Angus Hereford cross steer owned by our sons, Arnel and Ariel, so we share the record.

Margaret and I ended up with our individual price record for one beast, $2042.63, for a Droughtmaster heifer off grain.

We sold 21 cattle on Sale Corner and only one reached Some of the heifers which made from $1527 to $2042 a head $2000 but no one is comon Tuesday in Warwick. plaining about the prices.

Perhaps we could have a photo of a Speckle Park cow as my wife Margaret is really keen on that breed.

I have asked a few people and seems like Speckle Park are more suited to the vealer market which is what we are aiming for with our calves (the 760.2 ones), especially now that we are experiencing the best season for more than two decades.

Road rage We see a lot about road rage in the media and I experienced it for the first time on Sunday. I was on the outskirts of Ipswich in our 1973 Valiant Charger and two lanes merged into one. I pushed in between two cars and believed there was enough room for the lane change. A minute later, the driver of the car behind was right up behind me with his/her lights on. Weight loss Finally I have had success with losing weight, 10kg, in the past two months. I am now 90kg. Six months ago, I started a weight loss push in this column with Daily Journal staff member Deb Wheeler, Warwick Gymnastic Club president Coby Walker and Councillors Vic Pennisi, Andrew Gale and Steve Tancred. The other five lost 5kg or thereabouts in the run up to Father’s Day and my weight didn’t change much. Each of us donated $50 which went to Safe Haven. My weight loss is due to food intake and exercise. I have been buying Lite N Easy in recent weeks and going for walks or doing 30 minutes exercise in the hydrotherapy pool at WIRAC about twice a week. Chasing the cattle on foot is good for fitness.

Back to blackfish River Blackfish in Killarney and the headwaters of the Condamine River are on the verge of extinction, but efforts are underway to save them.

Southern Queensland Landscapes (SQL) have launched the Blackfish Project which will work with land managers to undertake actions on their properties to reduce sedimentation and increase thermal habitat in streams where blackfish persist.

On their website, SQL said the river blackfish, gadopsis marmoratus, are experiencing severe decline across the entire Murray-Darling Basin and are highly vulnerable to localised extinctions.

They have identified the upper Condamine headwaters as a critical site for maintaining blackfish presence in Queensland due to it being a cool upland area with essential habitat.

The project will be coordinated by Freshwater Ecologist Jacinta Cox. She has completed a thesis through the Australian Rivers Institute studying the effects of water regulation on native fish in the Dumaresq River, and a subsequent univer-

sity position (USQ) in research and data analysis capacity.

The sun shone and the rain stayed away for the last Sheep and Lamb sale for 2021 at the Warwick Saleyards. Agents yarded 1770 head to the weekly sale a very important number in the rich history of the country. There were some good lines of trade and butcher lambs as well as some ideal feed on and mutton types available. Lambs today topped at $255 to average $188.18 ($2up), hoggets topped at $225 to average $170.21($4down),ewes topped at $242 to average $128.97 ($16up), wethers topped at $180 to average $163.43($44up), lamb rams topped at $210 to average $176.95($10up).
