McDonald’s role in the world of beef production has brought the conglomerate under scrutiny, but the company has signed up to a commitment to net zero emissions across its global operations by 2050. The restaurant chain joins Pepsico as a founding partner of AgMission.

While the agriculture industry accounts for 9.9% of GHG emissions in the US, and roughly 24% globally, it is the only sector with the potential to be net negative for GHG emissions with soil and farmlands already sequestering more than one hundred times the carbon that they emit in a year, according to the US Farmers and Ranchers Alliance at least...

Goat meat hits high: time to rethink sheep?

“In 2021, overall goat exports are operating 20 percent, or 1696 tonnes, better than 2020 year-to-August levels, driven by continued growth in the United States and explosive volume upticks from South Korea, with its exports rising 97 percent this year,” MLA said.

“Annually, the US accounts for 67 percent of total goat meat export volumes, demon-

strating its significance for Australian red meat producers as a market. In 2021, the country’s export volumes have seen a 25 percent uptick year-to-date.”

Ellis said that the industry is moving away from feral goats.

“A lot of people are moving into farming goats,” Ellis said, “which is changing the way that we do things. It’s becoming a very viable project for graziers at the moment.

The program takes a whole-of-farm business approach to improve business performance and key profit drivers. It enables industry best practice and new research findings to be customised to local environments and farming systems. Australia's goat meat exports have risen a whopping 20 percent this year thanks to herd recovery.

“In current market terms, the over-the-hook (OTH) goat price has been steady in recent weeks," Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) said.

“Indeed, the improved slaughter volumes compared with 2020 and the national goat herd’s rebuild from drought has been positively supported by the 2021 OTH price, which is 3 percent stronger than the 2020 average in year-to-date prices.”

Drought caused a steep decline in goat meat production, but farmers around Australia have been steadily rebuilding goat herds.

“Goats are very highly sought after at the moment,” McDougall and Sons representative Ross Ellis said. “It’s the most highly consumed meat in the world and it appeals to different populations as their main meat and that’s why we’re starting to see an increase. We’re currently experiencing small goat numbers which is driving the price up.”

Through a new strategy called Future Fields, the Queensland Government will be working collaboratively with the fresh produce sector to develop a shared vision for the future of both the industry and supply chain for the next decade.

Growcom, the peak body representing the state’s fruit, vegetable and nut growers, is charged with bringing key stakeholders along the supply chain together and guiding the development of Future Fields.

“Growcom is embarking on an ambitious plan to bring together all parts of the horticulture supply chain together that will benefit all Queenslanders," Director-General of the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Bob Gee said. “The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries looks forward to working with Growcom and all industry stakeholders across the supply chain and beyond to ensure regional communities continue to prosper and grow from Queensland’s nationally and internationally renowned produce."

Growcom Chair and vegetable grower Belinda Frentz acknowledged that COVID-19 caused enormous pain and disruption in the sector, it has also created opportunities for those willing to adapt.

“The pandemic has kept our focus on the present,” Frentz said. “It’s essential as a sector we now raise our sights to the future. The winners over the next ten years are being determined today. Future Fields will ensure Queensland remains the preeminent state for horticultural production, supply chain innovation and food processing, and that we continue to attract investment from interstate and overseas."

Kong is king of rodeo RETIRED Warwick saddle bronc rider Darryl Kong was one of five inductees to the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre Hall of Fame at this year’s Warwick Rodeo.

He has been joined in the hall of fame by Jim Dix (Taroom) and two American-based Australians, Dave Appleton and Doug Flanigan as well as the Omeo Rodeo Committee from Victoria.

Kong first competed in a steer ride at Brookfield, Brisbane, in 1966, and won first up.

He headed back to Longreach where he was working as a jackeroo and was placed in a local steer ride and made the eight-second whistle in the poley saddle ride.

Kong then joined the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (then Australian Rough Riders Association) and competed in the C3D Rodeo at Clermont where he placed In the bull ride and saddle

bronc ride.

He then headed to Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales for the APRA Christmas Run of rodeos and won enough money to break into the open ranks.

One of his best wins in Australia was in the bull ride at Tumut (NSW) in 1968.

As the parade progressed I grew braver, gesturing proudly, figuring that I might as well bluff my way into contention for the ‘least popular float’ category in the Warwick Rodeo Parade. As all the passengers in our car joined in waving, the crowd roared, puzzled, amused, but seemingly obligated to applaud.

That memory instils in me what it means to live in a community that boasts inclusiveness. From the most prestigiously decorated and themed floats to that barefoot kid on a bicycle with a streamer and two balloons tied to the handlebars, we welcome them all, celebrate the efforts made, and regardless of the content, swear by the old saying ‘who doesn’t love a parade’?

The Long Paddock with Gerard Walsh

I have written already this spring about some heifers having calving problems on our property at Greymare.

The reality is the good winter season has meant calves are much heavier at birth.

When I was engaged to Margaret in 2002, we found a cow having calving problems but we lost the cow and calf.

This time 19 years later, we saved cow and calf so our record is up to 50 per cent.

The new calf is a heifer and Marg has called her Halloween.

The mother was one of the biggest heifers we had but the calf was just too big.

I have been thinking of getting the proper calving chains and definitely will now.

Having the same chains as the vet would have saved us five minutes in delivering the calf last week and time can be crucial.

For $100, we can be fully set up for our next problem calving.
