The wonders down under
If you see a farmer heading out into the field and burying what appears to be underpants where the sun don’t shine...don’t think the worst. He, or she, is probably just conducting a basic soil test. It’s become something of a global game with a serious (knicker) twist. “Soil your undies” is the name of the campaign here in Australia, jointly run by the University of New England and Cottoninfo, and the test simply involves taking a pair of white pure cotton undies, and burying it soil for eight weeks. It was originally the Killarney School of Arts but it was burnt down in 1913...then rebuilt in 1916, with the original pylons buried into the bed of a creek. Damaged in the 1968 tornado, and beset by the 2011 Condamine River flood in Killarney when surprisingly, the main damage was to a creek bank and one pylon.... Full story, Gerard Walsh back page.
