Tragedy and alarm
Staff reports
Three separate serious road incidents should have Southern Downs on high alert as we head into holiday period with tourists, grey nomads, truckies and schoo lies creating a mix of risks on the roads heading into summer.
Tragically, Year 12 graduate of Scots PGC College, Will Turner, died days after completing high school, in a multi vehicle crash in Gladfield on 20th November.
The Forensic Crash Unit identi fied his ute was travelling west on the Cunningham Highway when it collided with two oncoming vehi cles near Gladfield Back Road.
17 year-old Will died at the scene and the occupants of the other vehicles were transported to hospital with what were described as “non-life threatening injuries”.
Police appeal for any assistance to their investigations with school tributes emerging this week (see inside).
In an unrelated incident on
Monday 21st November, a white utility was seen veering off the New England Highway near Severnlea, just after 3pm. The vehicle came to an abrupt halt and truck drivers and other passersby stopped to assist. Emergency ser vices were in attendance shortly after. There were no injuries reported.
On Saturday 19th November, Lily’s Cafe in Stanthorpe was impacted by a vehicle damaging their Lock St entrance, the busi ness closing until further notice.
McVeigh’s mixed verdict
George Joseph McVeigh (pictured) has been found guilty of two counts of sexual assault and one charge of assault with intent to rape, but not guilty on charges of rape and attempted rape. McVeigh is facing sen tencing as we go to press, over an inci dent that occurred in the victim’s home on 31st January 2021. The 58-year-old father of five had pleaded not guilty on all counts. McVeigh was sentenced to 18 months in jail with the convictions recorded.
The jury had diffi culty making a deci sion on the guilty ver dicts, McVeigh report edly unaffected when they were announced in the Warwick District Court.
In his sentencing,
Judge Craig Chowdhury said women should be able to “feel safe” wherever they are, particularly when in their own home.
“The jury have found you had the intention to have sexual intercourse without the woman’s consent, which is the aggravating feature,” Judge Chowdhury told McVeigh.
“I will act on the basis that your offending has had significant adverse effect on the woman.”
Character references on McVeigh’s behalf are said to have been consid
ered in terms of a shorter jail term.
The woman at the centre of the ver dicts gave her evidence in a closed court last week. McVeigh, who had a substantial reputation in local sporting circles, and acted in a leading role in the locally-made and produced movie Outnumbered, will be free after 8 months, under the decision handed down by the judge.

Delving into the past
We often wonder where time has gone. For the Lions Club of Stanthorpe, they have answered this question and helped Granite Belt locals literally dive into the past, discovering more about their families of origin and mak ing connections for today.

Diabetes Medication Shortages Making the best of a tough situation
Welcome to my monthly column and thank you for the warm welcome to Stanthorpe and surrounds!
Diabetic medication shortages have been widely reported on in recent months, namely Ozempic (semaglu tide), and Trulicity (dulaglutide). Current indicators suggest that shortage of these medications is likely to persist until late March 2023.
My diabetic patients, and those with overweight/obesity, are presenting to me with questions and concerns regarding future management of their conditions. The first thing I tell them: don’t panic, GPs have access to a range of highly effective medication options for managing Type 2 diabetes and overweight/obesity. Furthermore, I use this opportunity to work with my patients to reassess whether their medications might need to be adjusted or reviewed.
I seek to empower patients to fully understand their condition and encourage them to ask questions and be actively involved in managing their own health. This involves much more than just providing a
of factors: personalized care, an investigative approach to patients’ health, optimising nutrition, regular physical activity, and commencing and reviewing new medications at the right time to try and prevent problems before they arise. This is the ultimate goal of Functional Medicine.
Knowledge is power. Ask questions, seek answers, and enjoy good health.

Babysitter jailed
Staff reports
A42-year-old woman has been found guilty and sen tenced to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of a local toddler. The hearing at the Supreme Court in Toowoomba heard that Lisa Rose Halcrow, who was originally charged with murder, grabbed the twoyear-old victim by the jaw and hit him in the back of his head with sufficient force that to send him tumbling down stairs. The victim was found to have suffered blunt force trauma to his head and seri ous internal damage, including haemorrhaging to his bowel and pancreas.
The babysitter originally pleaded not guilty in the Warwick Magistrates Court after being committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court. Evidence in Warwick included the statement made by Halcrow that “I’ve killed him (Connor)”, evidence
which was not contained in the toddler’s grandmother’s original statement.
The Prosecutor in Toowoomba, Philip McCarthy. told the Supreme Court, the defendant had waited for 20 minutes, and changed out of her bloodied clothes, before taking Connor to hospital.
The youngster was barely alive on arrival at the Warwick Hospital and staff attempted for around an hour to resusci tate him.
The committal hearing did not involve examination of post-mortem evidence related to the toddler’s death, instead involving the cross-examina tion by Halcrow’s defence bar rister David Jones of several witnesses, including Connor’s mother Emily Horan, and a friend and a workmate of Halcrow’s, as reported in The Daily Journal earlier this year.
Also cross-examined by Mr Jones were Emily’s parents Russell and Deborah Ballard.
Mr Ballard told the court he and his wife had provided
extensive personal and practi cal support to Emily, who had struggled at times as a single parent with Connor’s care, and that at times Halcrow, who was described as a trusted family friend, had urged them to counsel Emily about her parental responsibilities.
Deborah Ballard related to the court details of the phone call she received from Halcrow on the morning of her grand son’s death, with Halcrow informing her that Connor had experienced “a fall”.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Steve de Lissa tendered 78 statements of evidence to the Warwick Magistrates Court, which were ‘handed up’ to the Supreme Court for Halcrow’s trial.
Halcrow had been charged with one count of murder and one count of grievous bodily harm (relating to a separate incident in which the boy suf fered a burn to his hand), and Halcrow originally entered pleas of not guilty to both charges.

some 12.7 million camping trips in the first 6 months of this year with some 770,000 caravans and campers registered nationally.
As we move into the summer months and the Christmas School Holidays, the thoughts of many will no doubt be moving to having a break away from home. A holiday. Some will fly off around the country or around the world but for many of us it will be a simpler option.
For an increasing number of Aussies, that trip away will involve camping or caravanning somewhere in our beautiful country.
I’m personally a big fan of the camping trip and the statistics say I’m not alone. According to Tourism Research Australia a part of the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, Australians undertook
Add this to the number of tents that must exist out there and you start to see what I mean. If you still doubt me, take a look at the proliferation of camping and fishing type stores in recent years, big and small and the everincreasing ways to buy gear online.
I’m a life-long camper having started that journey as a child, in both an old fibreglass caravan and a big canvas ex-Army tent. I can’t remember which one came first. In later life I’ve had tents big and small, campertrailers, camped in the backs of vehicles and even camped in swags on the ground.
I’ve written previously about the challenges of driving to your chosen camp spot so I won’t go over them again, other than to say ensure both your vehicle and any trailer you are towing is in good condition. Oh, and check your spare wheels, that always helps.
The other advice I’ll
give is to practice setting up your equipment, be it a tent, trailer or van. Whether that’s in the back yard or down at a local camping area. And take the people that are going to help you set up with you for the practice. Practice makes perfect.
Take it from me, there is no worse way to start a trip than with a big family argument setting up a tent or camper trailer, pop-top or even parking a caravan. Add this to the likelihood that you may arrive at the campground in the dark or in the middle of a storm perhaps and you can see how it goes wrong. I’m not saying I know because those arguments have ever happened to the Gale family. They just happened to this guy I know. (honest)
Regardless. It’s never the way to start a holiday. Remember, its supposed to be relaxing and fun.
Anyway, it never happens to the Gales. We have a camper-van. Park it and open the door. All done – time for fun. Happy Camping.

COLUMN CENTIMETRES
My brother and I are, to put it mildly, contrasting types. I tell people he’s the best horse surgeon in Australia, whereas I dropped out of medicine the way Elon Musk dropped out of physics: without having done any of it at all. In fact, in fairness, I had put on some bandaids and Savlon in my time, if that counts as surgery, but having decided a long time ago I would be a doctor, I ended up, um, dropping out, when I watched a BBC series tracking the life of medical students from high school through to them settling into their professional lives. There was so much of it I couldn’t stomach. Apart from having a stronger stomach than mine, you only have to look at my brother’s study, and my study to release he has a critical ingredient of medicine, veterinary or otherwise, that I most definitely lack: precision, order, tidiness. I once arrived a week early at the airport for a flight…and another time a week late. I even arrived for a flight to New Zealand without my passport. This is just a tip of what I would call an iceberg, but an iceberg has around 10% of its body above water, and these incidents do not represent 10% of the problem.
But we have a few things in common. We love solar panels, and believe that people who complain about wind generators killing birds are ridiculous hypocrites. Well, let me briefly explain. In the UK, where there are a lot of wind generators, death by massive white blade is a common event for birds. Somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 birds
every year are killed by blade strikes. That’s around 273 birds a day at the high end. Cronkite to date has killed three birds in the last year, so wind generators in the UK are responsible for as many bird deaths as 33,333 newspaper cats.
Sounds bad doesn’t it. Ban the blade? OK…but before you do, let me give you another fact. Every year birds are also killed by cars. Along with many other animals. But let’s start with birds. The death toll on Britain’s roads is estimated to be a minimum of 30 million (a study actually took a random sample of roads, weighted them by traffic flow, and then counted the bodies). A book called the Flattened Fauna would be good reading for anyone frightened of a wind turbine’s blades. You can get it for $8.60 from Amazon, but beware, if you do, you’ll probably kill a couple of additional birds… because the book will arrive by plane. Planes are not as bad as cars, but globally, the numbers still are in the many millions. Remember “Sully” Sullenberger miraculously landing his US Airways A320 jet on the Hudson River without engines? No-one speaks of the event as a tragedy, but it was, for a flock of geese…
And by the way, a Norwegian study found that by painting one of the turbine blades black, you could reduce bird deaths by 70%. So let’s not talk about those deadly wind turbines again, shall we?

Men, it’s time for a cuppa

Did you know that 19th November was International Men’s Day and in fact, that November is men’s health awareness month?
The day might have come and gone and men and women were unaware which seems a little unusual considering the amount of coverage that International Women’s Day receives around 8th March.
Checking in with Kev Armstrong from Stanthorpe & District Men’s Shed, he said it’s not unusual for women’s issues to have the exposure they do, considering how significant women have needed to work for change and recognition in the employment sector, for exam ple.
Kev further said that the Men’s Shed initiative exists to be a support for men any day of the week, regardless of particu lar days that come and go on the national scale. Plus, he more often hears from women rather than men, saying, “I receive calls from women who ask, ‘How can I get my husband involved?’”
The Club Rd, Stanthorpe, facility often has men “sitting around, talking and drinking coffee”, Kev saying that’s “not the only thing” they do but if it is, it would be worth it, adding, “Having a bit of a yarn among men is what we are all about.”
Secretary of Stanthorpe & District Men’s Shed, Phil James, told us “most members are retired, and following a lifetime of work and contribution some
may feel at a loose end and have trouble adapting to life in the slow lane”.
“This is where men’s sheds can fill the gap,” Phil said. “They play a vital role in allowing men to keep busy, utilise and pass on skills learned in careers often spanning decades, and provide a sense of purpose.
He agrees with Kev in terms of the social aspect, saying, “For
men, who are arguably not quite as good at networking as women, the shed provides the ideal environment to form net works, discover mutual interests, connect with others, and gain a sense of belonging.”
The fellows also “look out for one another” and host guest speakers on subjects such as mental health awareness, alco hol, tobacco and other drug use,

banking and finance, and first aid.
“Men’s Sheds play a very important role in society,” Phil said.
Whether awareness of Sunday’s date was known or unknown, this month is set aside to highlight a wide range of men’s health issues and their ability to seek help especially in the mental health space, the
Men’s Shed initiative with a vital part to play.
If in need, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Phil James on 0411 300 869 and Kev Armstrong on 0428 712 629. To find your nearest Men’s Shed, contact the Queensland Men’s Shed Association (qmsa.org.au) for locations and contact details. New members are said to be “always welcome”.

Staff reports
Year 12 graduate Will Turner (pictured) from Texas has been remembered fondly by the staff of Scots PGC College in Warwick in their “profound shock” of the incident that took his life on 20th November near Gladfield.
Scots College Principal Kyle Thompson said the 17 year-old was a gifted student and a “much-loved member” of their college community.
“Will was an avid campdrafter and was looking forward to embarking on the next step of his journey after school as an apprentice boilermaker,” Mr Thompson said.
The College has extended support to the Year 12 cohort to which Will belonged, and the students still at school this week.
“Support services are in place for stu dents, including our graduated Year 12s, staff or any college community mem bers,” Mr Thompson said.
“We understand that this event will have a deep impact on Will’s cohort, who are in our thoughts even though they are not on campus with us.
“We are all profoundly shocked by this heartbreaking accident ... (and) our imme diate thoughts are with his family during this extremely difficult time.”
Will was said to be “well known” within Campdraft circles.

Australian War Memorial Director Matt Anderson said: “We are thrilled to welcome Lendlease, Hindmarsh and Kane Constructions onto our site to help us continue to tell the story of Australian service. “This is an exciting milestone for everyone working on the development as it will allow the contractors to bring each of the three stages into real ity.”
Canberra-based construc tion company Kane Constructions will manage the Southern Entry, Hindmarsh has been handed
responsibility for the C.E.W. Bean Building extension, and Lendlease has formally agreed to build the new Anzac Hall.
“Charles Bean wanted to cre ate a memorial, an archive and a museum, and the building works embody this vision,” Mr Anderson said.
“In a fitting finish, the roof of the new Anzac Hall takes its inspiration from the iconic Australian rising sun badge.”
In more specific details pro moted, the oculus in the Southern Entry is to be built as an inversion of the dome of the Memorial. To the north of the
original sandstone building, the new Anzac Hall will “contain an aperture of similar size to the oculus and dome”. Further, the aperture will “provide a visual connection between the two large gallery levels of the new Anzac Hall”.
Australian War Memorial Executive Program Director, Wayne Hitches, said: “These works are fully designed and documented, of the highest quality and the best val ue-for-money solution to meet the needs of the Memorial for the next 50 years.”

Locals heading north are likely to encounter some susbstan tial changes in the Toowoomba region.
Temporary works are underway to repair a cut ting above the eastbound lanes of the Toowoomba Bypass.
One lane will be open to traffic later this month, weather and con ditions permitting.
Both eastbound lanes were closed in late October for the safety of motorists, after heavy rainfall caused significant movement in a cutting on the northern side of the road.
Regional Director (Southern Queensland)
Bill Lansbury said the safety of motorists was his priority.
“The contractor Nexus is working as quickly as possible to reopen this important connection, but we’ll continue to pri oritise the safety of the work crews and our community,” Mr Lansbury said.
“Extreme wet weather over 2022 has caused moisture to find its way into the cutting above the eastbound lane, causing movement to large wedges of material, and cracks in the con crete.
“A short-term solution has been planned which will allow one eastbound lane to reopen.
“The temporary works involve the installation of shipping containers
filled with ballast, which will act as a protective barrier to prevent any rock fall impacting the traffic lanes.
“In the critical section, the 20-foot shipping containers are being secured by restraint wires connected to 72 anchor bars which are drilled and grouted into the sandstone under the road.”
The installation of the double-stacked shipping containers will require the use of a crane parked on the bypass westbound lanes.
The westbound lanes will be closed on Friday 25th November to facili tate the work. The exten sive work required to permanently repair the cutting is scheduled to start in 2023.

What does it mean to be “Amber”?
Selina Venier stanthorperecord@gmail.com
Some of you might be wondering where we are at with Covid19?
Naturally it’s not going away although life has seemed to have resumed to a semblance of normal, especially following last weekend’s Berry Festival on the Granite Belt and other events going ahead.
And yet, while the windy weather keeps us guessing as to what’s next in the wind within the semblance of normality, we heard earlier this month that Queensland has entered “a new wave” of transmission.
This new wave has more been liked to a “soup of variants”, The Courier Mail reported this wee, and one that is “yet to peak” but likely on the down
ward spiral at Christmas.
Epidemiologists are suggest ing the daily recorded number of cases will be “four to six times higher” at the peak of the current wave of about 10,000 a day.
Associate Professor in Epidemiology at Deakin University, Hassan Vally, said it was his “optimistic take” that the inclement “wave” would be “shorter” and “sharper”.
Currently, within the 11th November “Amber” mandate, here’s what’s recommended:
“Masks are recommended (not required) in healthcare set tings, indoors where you can’t socially distance, on public transport, for older or medically at-risk people, if around vulner able people.” Of course some settings insist on a mask and on The Granite Belt, it seems we are to simply follow what is
requested.
“Stay home if sick” is the sec ond suggestion which isn’t too earth-shattering but there aren’t the monetary reimbursements now if the condition is serious and genuinely Covid19-related. Opinions vary on this subject, read below.
“Maintain good hygiene” is a given. It seems that there is agreement on the fact that many of us are using more means of keeping clean with better hand washing especially. It’s hearten ing to still see hand sanitiser in local petrol outlets and most grocery stores.
“Keep up-to-date with vacci nations” is the next government suggestion which goes without saying as to why they do so.
“Take a RAT if you get Covid19 symptoms” because these are still readily available. Remember when they were as rare as hen’s
teeth?
Here are some other sugges tions within the Amber stage: Take a RAT every two days if someone in your household has Covid-19, register your positive test result, stay home if you test positive, wear a mask for seven days if you test positive and avoid visiting hospitals, aged care or disability care for seven days after positive test.
Some of you on The Granite Belt told us this week:
“I filled up at the Woolies servo in Stanthorpe today and it was good to see I can still clean my hands. I tend to do it more now but it’s a given each time I fill the tank. We tend to have sanitiser in the car,” Belinda said.
“Not sure anyone really knows what being ‘Amber’ means. Think people are over it. I kind of turn off when Covid comes
on the news,” Jono said.
“Covid is here still, we are liv ing with it and getting on with it,” Don said.
“I think kids are better at san itising their hands now. This will mean they are better during their life too. That means we might have a future with less transmis sion of bugs in general,” Michelle said.
“People are still dying of Covid19 related conditions. Some might have other serious illnesses too. Sometimes I think we don’t get the whole picture of the real statistics. I think we still need to be careful with hygiene and going to public places, especially inside,” Mary said.
“My daughter in Brisbane works in a nursing home. They are back to wearing masks and glasses as staff. It’s a given,” Sue said.

It was barely worth a 30-minute drive on Sunday to have a look at North Pine Dam.
The dam is a water-supply dam for the South-East corner but doesn’t look anything like as big as three other Brisbane dams, Somerset, Wivenhoe and Wyaralong.
We stayed a night at Samford and saw a sign to the dam and had a look.
It was not like Leslie Dam where you could walk along the top or Connolly Dam where you could see all of the dam wall.
A quick look at Google tells me the size of North Pine Dam is 215,000 megalitres, twice the size of Leslie Dam but not as big as Glenlyon Dam east of Texas.
You think you have seen some pretty big dams until you travel to Emerald in Central Queensland and see Fairbairn Dam of 1300 megalitres, more than 10 times the size of Leslie Dam.
Talking dams, one Town and Country Journal reader told me recently that Leslie Dam was only full twice in 30 years but
The Long Paddock with Gerard
has filled more than 10 times this year.
Water is often flowing down Sandy Creek this year when released from Leslie Dam which is great news for the farmers along the creek as it builds up the underground water supply.
For those new to the area or too young to remember when Bob Hawke was Prime Minister, I need to add that Leslie Dam Stage 2 boosted the capacity of the dam by 50,000 megalitres.
I don’t remember when Stage 1 was built but definitely remem ber Stage 2 which was the addi tion of gates.
There was a long battle to determine where the water from stage 2 was allocated with down stream irrigators in areas like Brookstead campaigning for more water against the Cunningham Irrigators. The Cunningham group were irriga tors from the dam wall north and west from the dam, in most cases the smaller irrigators.
There was also a push for more town water for Warwick. Many have suggested down the years that Leslie Dam is in the wrong place and you could have almost won that argument up until this year.
If you have information on how often Leslie Dam has flowed over since it was built, welcome to email me on edi tor@thedailyjournal.ink for a future column.
Down the years, two other

dam sites have been suggested around Warwick, both on the Condamine River.
One was at Pratten, west of Warwick, where the rumour was the water would back up to the steps of the Horse and Jockey in Warwick which seemed like a bit of a story.
Another was at Elbow Valley which would have backed the water up towards Killarney.
The argument against both dams down the years has been
the loss of top agricultural land.
There has been a lot of debate about the proposed Emu Swamp Dam at Stanthorpe but I haven’t studied the issue enough to come up with a definite opinion. In round figures, the capaci ties of the five dams in our area as 254 megalitres at Glenlyon, 105 at Leslie, 67 at Coolmunda (Inglewood) and two megalitres for both Connolly (Warwick) and Storm King (Stanthorpe).

Plants in the picture
President of Indigenous Plants for Health Association, Andrew Pengelly reported a healthy turn out to their 19th and 20th November workshops at Foxbar Falls, Amiens.
The gardens at the Amiens Legacy Centre were said to bene fit with “several bushtucker plants” and Melissa Thomas from Washpool Supply Co. gave an
“invaluable” demonstration on making skincare products using native aromatic plants.
She said: “Essential oils typical ly draw the lion’s share of atten tion when it comes to aromather apy, however essential oils are concentrated and powerful and not always the right option for every application.”
“All too often we see sugges tions to add some drops of essen

tial oil to a bath for ‘relaxation’, when the reality is that those droplets bob along at the surface of the water coming into contact with warm skin in their concen trated form,” and followed her words with a demonstration that highlighted “the aromatherapy benefits of native plant materials in bath salts and lip balm”. Energy analysis for Australia
Roger Willis Contributed
We must decarbon ize Australia, not only to help save the planet but also for the security of Australia as it depends so much on imported oil products in an uncertain world. To solve a problem you must first under stand it, and basic principles are a good place to start. This analy sis focuses on the scale of the challenge for Australia. It assumes that all fossil fuel use should be phased out by 2050, a target with bipartisan support. The approach is not new and was prompted by an article by Roger Pielke in Forbes magazine in 2019 entitled “Net-Zero Carbon Dioxide Emissions By 2050 Requires A New Nuclear Power Plant Every Day”. However, I thought that his con clusions were extreme and so I have done my own analysis for the Australian situation.
First we must understand the units of energy, as this can be confusing. For example, a toast
er may be rated at 500 Watts (W). This equates to 0.5 Kilowatt (KW) but when talking about the energy produced by a power station, a country like Australia, or the whole world, watts are not a big enough unit. So here are some options: 1000 KW equal a Megawatt (MW), 1000 MW equal a Gigawatt (GW), 1000 GW equal a Tetrawatt (TW), 1000 TW equal a Petawatt (PW), and 1000 PW equal an Exawatt (EW).
Also, we must understand the relationship between nameplate capacity of a power station and the power actually produced by it in a given time. For example, if an electricity power station has a ‘nameplate’ capacity of 500 MW, it means that the power station is capable of producing 500 MW of electricity when operat ing at continuous full power. If it does this for 24 hours, it has produced 500 x 24, or 12,000 MW Hours (MWh) of energy. Thus, MW measures the poten tial to do useful work and MWh is the amount of energy actually delivered over a period of time.
Actual capacity is the maxi mum electric output a generator can produce under specific con
ditions. For example, a nuclear power station can run at about 90% of its nameplate capacity if required. A solar power station can operate at 30% of its name plate capacity because useful sun shines for approximately 7/24 of a day.
In its review of global energy the company BP produces an annual report, and the one refer enced here is the Statistical Review of World Energy 2021, 70th edition, page 11. It is easily found in an Internet search. It tables primary energy consump tion by fuel for each country in 2019 and 2020. The fuels are oil, gas, coal, nuclear, hydro, and renewable, plus totals. The units are Exajoules for that one-year period. Since a Joule is a Watt Second, there are 3,600 Joules in a Wh or 3,600 Ejoules in an EWh. Thus we must divide the BP table numbers by 3,600 to convert to EWh and multiply by 1,000,000 to convert to TWh.
Since the total energy generat ed for the whole world in 2020 was 557.10 Exajoules, Australia produces 1% of the world’s energy.

New players conquer the green
Warwick Bowls Club held thier Christmas party and break up on Thursday 17th November at the Condamine Sports Club. Dozens of members enjoyed good company, good conversation, good food and Christmas cheer.
Part of the proceedings involved the presentation of badges to veteran bowlers and the winners of various competitions held throughout the year. It was great to see two new
