etting accurate measures of rainfall--and indeed weather data--is key to planning everything from the Inland Rail route to the best time for planting, so it's not surprising that one local council has been lobbying the Bureau of Meterology hard for changes to reflect 'reality on the ground'.

The Goondiwindi council met with from representatives from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) to address concerns about the measuring of flood levles and rain fall events in Texas and beyond.

"During a workshop in Texas, residents were able to give their feedback to the BoM and look for opportunities to improve local flood gauging, modelling, and warnings," former local MP and now Goondi shire mayor

Lawrence Springborg said.

"We had landholders attend from both sides of the border, who had been concerned about insufficient communication of flood warnings following major flooding in the Texas area and upstream in March 2021."

The meetings were also used to feedback local observations of the more recent November '21 flood, triggered by a worry that official warnings about he volume of water flowing into local catchments was inaccurate.

Heritage weekend back on

After terrible weather cancelled the original Stanthorpe Heritage Market Day, the festivities have been rescheduled for Saturday 3 September from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

he ongoing issue of preserving agricultural land while accommodating encroaching semi-rural development was raised in a recent community advisory meeting.

The Shaping Southern Downs advisory group met last month to discuss a range of issues, including setbacks for new houses build in rural zones.

Cr Jo McNally, whose company is involved in a contentious battle with Council on this issue over an application in Dalcouth, left the room for the discussion.

In her absence, the Manager of Planning and De4veloopment and the Planning Services Coordinator showed the group a table of current SDRC information and what other Councils have as standard setbacks.

Feedback was solicited from the group on whether to keep the current setback or change the status quo.

The attending members, which included Cr McNally, Cr Gliori, Sue Keong, Tricia Chant and Nathan Parks, also discussed opportunities to expand or change planning zones due to growth in the region.

General discussion was centred around buffering and other mitigation measures for visual amenity. According to the minutes of the meeting, other matters for review included the threat of bushfires and the need for long term maintenance of structures.

Out of the five strategies for the meeting - including road and rail transport, rural prosperity, population growth, resilient workforce and strong governance - a range of actions were identified by the members.

One was to undertake asset management planning and prioritization of upgrades to key roads and bridges.

Other critical areas of discussion included strategies to retain and attract youth to the region rural communities by conserving agricultural areas, particularly those that provide the community with an affordable supply of fresh food, food security and export earning potential.

The minutes of the meeting were tabled at the last ordinary meeting of Council last week.

The next Shaping Southern Downs advisory meeting will be held in November in Stanthorpe.

Texas crime Police intercepted a vehicle on Saint John Street, Texas, on July 29 and conducted a roadside drug test.

The driver, a 28-year-old man from Texas, allegedly provided a positive result and was allegedly driving the vehicle while unlicensed.

He was issued a notice to appear at Inglewood Magistrates Court on September 15 charged with disqualified driving and driving a vehicle with a prohibited drug in his system.

On July 30 police intercepted a vehicle on Kemp Street, Texas, and conducted a roadside breath test.

It is alleged the driver, a 38-year-old man from New South Wales, had a breath alcohol concentration of 0.108 per cent BAC. His licence was suspended and he was issued a notice to appear at Inglewood Magistrates Court on September 15 charged with drink driving.

Ag plans for S Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi's recent meeting with MP Mark Furner, Minister of Agriculture and etc, has elicited a positive response.

During the meeting, the mayor discussed the some of the goals and issues facing the Southern Downs and Granite Belt including labour supply and shortage of accommodation.

In a letter to the Mayor, Mr Furner acknowledged both issues are an "ongoing issue for a number of regional councils throughout the State" but noted the mayor's suggestion of using Leslie Dam recreation center facilities "as a possible solution."

Minister Furner also admires this Council's proposal of using the under-utilized TAFE facilities in the shire to attract universities to deliver additional trade qualifications for residents.

This Council's hope to

create a protein hub on the Southern Downs also received a positive reaction from the Minister. He noted the "strategy" and was particularly impressed with the idea of "sheep and goad industries" and noted concerns about restrictions concerning fish passageways and "related planning issues".

Texas show Texas Show, July 30-31 Police give credit to the Texas Show committee and volunteers for a very wellrun event over the weekend.

Large numbers of patrons and competitors from all over New South Wales and Queensland attended and police were not required to assist with any unwanted behaviour whatsoever at the event or from people leaving the event, which is great to see.

Everyone attending had a plan B to get home, displaying respect for each other and local residents.

Welcome to the Town & Country Journal The Country Journal has always held a special place in my heart.

The Small Newspaper Company started publishing it about a year ago in order to bring news to rural householders who wouldn't otherwise have access.

Believe me, it took a very long time and a pile of headaches to figure out how to get the Country Journal out to the regions, but we did, and for that we were all grateful. It's lonely enough living out on a farm without any news coming in at all except through dodgy satellite internet.

Every week as I put the Country Journal together, I give extra thought to what sort of information our rural readers would find informative, entertaining, helpful and interesting. It is a pleasure writing it.

This week is the first week that we will be distributing the new Country Journal, now called the Town & Country Journal, in Stanthorpe and Warwick and other villages as a free paper.

rowers in the Southern Downs will have to source local bee pollinating services to pollinate crops this year due to the Varroa mite crisis unfolding in NSW. Fortunately,Australian researchers are getting closer to developing a world-first hormone-based pesticide that is safe for honey bees but fatal to Varroa mite.

“The development of a commercial pesticide that is fatal to Varroa mite and small hive beetle, but not honey bees, will lead to a worldwide market opportunity to export Australian-based technology,” Hort Innovation chief executive Brett Fifield said. “It will also offer a significant step toward protecting global agricultural systems that are reliant on honey bee pollination.”

Grower-owned research and development corporation Hort Innovation has joined forces with the University of Sydney for the $1.2M initiative.

Scientists will create molecules that selectively bind to and inter-

fere with the hormone receptors of Varroa mite and fellow honey bee pest, small hive beetle, interfering with reproduction, development, and behaviour. The target receptors are absent from vertebrates, making the pesticide safe for other beneficial animals in the environment.

Mr Fifield said pesticides are a crucial aspect of sustainable agriculture and disease control, explaining that there is a pressing need for more environmentally-friendly pesticides that have selective action against ‘bad’ versus ‘good’ insects.

“Thirty per cent of global agricultural production is reliant on pollination by honey bees,” he said. “And across the board, this production is currently under threat from pests including the Varroa mite and the small hive beetle.”

Until the recent outbreak, Australia was the last known inhabited continent in the world that was not permeated by Varroa mite. Chemical control methods exist but research shows Varroa mites globally are building up tol-

erances and some treatments aren’t suitable for the Australian environment.

University of Sydney project lead Professor Joel Mackay said insecticides that target Varroa mite and small hive beetle receptors have not been successfully created before.

“There has been international recognition of the potential value of insect hormone receptors as targets for safer selective control agents,” he said. “Several companies have tried and encountered

technical difficulties largely because these proteins are challenging to express, purify and characterise. However, our team has had over a decade of experience tackling and overcoming these technical challenges. We have one of only two laboratories in the world that have determined atomic structures of the hormone proteins of the receptors we are targeting. We have also developed a unique receptor-based chemical library screen for discovery of new pesticide leads molecules.”

La Trobe University and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute are also contributing to the fiveyear project.

In addition to their work in developing the pesticide, Hort Innovation is also investing more than $61M into research and development projects that aim to enhance and protect pollination security in Australia, from work with flies and native bees that are not affected by Varroa mite to mechanical methods of pollination.

A

fter their successful Annual Poultry Show held on Sunday, the Southern Downs Poultry Club is taking a moment to celebrate before planning for the next season.

“It was massive!” club president Leanne Doepel said. “All sorts of people came here. It was really great to see everyone in here enjoying themselves and looking at all the different breeds. It’s bright and clean and people really like it.”

Ms Doepel is especially chuffed since her Light Sussex bird won Champion Soft Feather and Reserve Champion in spite of fidgeting during the judging because she needed to lay an egg.

“I love the Light Sussex,” she said. “They’re such beautiful birds. They’re hard to breed because they don’t lay a lot of eggs, but hopefully, they want to lay well this year.”

With the poultry season winding down to give chooks ample time for laying eggs and raising chicks for the next season, now is a good time for reflection and planning as the Southern Downs Poultry Club looks toward the future.

“We’re trying to get the young ones involved,” she said.

“Anyone interested in chooks can come along to a meeting and have a look. It’s just getting together and talking about our chooks or ducks.”

Ms Doepel hopes people will

see the Club as a place to learn and grow and have fun rather than a place only for experts, explaining that other members would love to help newcomers learn everything from how to wash a chook and interact with different breeds to how to prepare a bird for show. They’re also open to hosting workshops for the community at the Ernie Young Poultry Pavilion at the Allora Showgrounds.

“If anyone wants to learn anything, just let us know,” Ms Doepel said.

She knows what it’s like to start with a blank slate. When she arrived in Allora 17 years ago, she knew nothing about chooks, but local poultry legend Ernie Young happily shared his knowledge.

“Ernie taught me everything I know because I knew nothing,” Ms Doepel said. “He was my mentor. I’m a bit of an animal lover so it wasn’t hard to get involved with the chooks.

They’re just great to have around. Mine are free range and it’s just lovely having them in the

yard. They chase the bugs and look for different grasses that they like. They’re little characters.”

Club fees are $15 Family, $10 Adults, and $5 Juniors, and membership only requires an interest in poultry and a willingness to pitch in.

“There’s always little jobs to do,” Ms Doepel said after taking a break from vacuuming sawdust out of 360 chook pens.

“They can fill up water troughs, put tags on cages, fill pens with sawdust, or help with fundraising.”

Community participation and support is important to her, for she readily acknowledges that without community support and the dedication of local sponsors, poultry shows simply wouldn’t happen. She made sure to thank Jenco, Olsen’s, Riverina, Pursehouse Rural, Percy’s Fruits, Gardens Galore, Mark Pillar, June Bool, A and J Galloway, and even herself for donating feed, plants, and money for ribbons, trophies, and more to ensure the poultry show continues to thrive.

“Without our sponsors we’d be buggered,” Ms Doepel said.

“We wouldn’t be able to run our show.”

ocal farmers are welcoming visitors to their farms to observe a variety of regenerative practices on the Southern Downs Regen Ag Bus Tour on Sunday 21 August.

“The three farms that we're going to are diverse in how they operate but have all taken a ‘whole of operation’ approach to their farming,” Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group Landcare Coordinator Tanya Jobling said. “And that includes working with their families, their products, the markets for their production, waste streams and their whole resource base.”

Running from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the tour will meet outside the Allora Showgrounds and visit Echo Valley at Goomburra, Gleneden at

Maryvale and Burge Pastoral at Allora. The tour will take a whole farm approach in each visit so participants can see the production choices and consequent systems in place on each farm.

“The three farms have different ethics, different production systems, different outputs, and so they were chosen to give a wide example of approaches to

farming,” Mrs Jobling said.

“These farms have also engaged with practical works in the past, for example, Natural Sequence Farming and using microbes to improve soil condition, so participants can see and hear about practical examples of improving the resource base.”

Across the three farms, participants will see cover crops, beef, pork, pastured eggs, lamb, grains

crops, hay and fodder production, direct marketing and large scale nutrient cycling. “Farm tours are important because learning is an important part of the farming journey,” Mrs Jobling said, “and moving our thinking and actions to meet current and future challenges in farming is the only way we are going to be able to manage well, whether we are new to farming or ‘not so new’.”

elebrating the lives and achievements of early writers connected to the Darling Downs is the focus of "Words from the Past", a new book by Shirley Chambers.

“The book really came from my love of reading,” Ms Chambers said, “and of my attachment to the Darling Downs because that’s where I grew up.”

She was raised on her parent’s farm in Rocky Creek near Milmerran, and there developed a lifelong love of books and local history.

“The book begins in the 1870’s because 1875 was about the first time that travellers began writing down Aboriginal words,” she said. “I put in information about the Aboriginal languages, even though many of them have since been lost, because they were storytellers.”

The book follows the expansion of publishing throughout the region, touching on writers from as far north as the Bunya Mountains, out west to the Western Downs, and south to Warwick, Stanthorpe, and the border with New South Wales.

“In the 1880’s, the newspapers started getting set up,” Ms Chambers said, “and writers started submitting things to the paper.”

The book focuses on writers from the past who have connections to the Darling Downs, delving into their personal con-

nections with the Darling Downs, their literary achievements and the importance that is placed on their works.

“Many of the writers featured in the book have spent only a short time on the Downs,” she said, “their experiences inspiring their writing.

Others have lived in the region for many years, some their whole lives. There are writers like Steele Rudd that people know, and others that no one has ever heard of.”

Some of the writers included are Bruce Dawe, Mabel Forrest, and Dorothy Cottrell.

It was her work with W o r d f e s t Toowoomba, an annual celebration of all things books, writing, and the spoken word, that prompted Ms Chambers to write “Words from the Past.”

“Wordfest Toowoomba wanted a history of the background of local writers,” she said. “A friend of mine asked me to be involved and it kind of snowballed from there. I already had a bit of interest and I’ve had that interest for a long time and had read material the writers had written.”

With that interest motivating her, she began writing and researching in October 2021.

“I realised that the digitised newspapers from the past are a fantastic source of information,” she said, “and the State Library of Queensland was fantastic.”

When her book was ready for publication, Ms Chambers was thrilled to receive permission from Hugh and Sue Huston from Mt Marshall to use a painting by artist Wyclif (Clif) Huston for the cover.

ast week it was the yellow tie that stood out but on 30th July, it wasn't just the Akubra that was part of the news, to anyone taking note of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's hope for reform.

The vocal PM announced suggested wording for a referendum question to be put to Australians to vote on altering the Constitution, from Arnhem Land at the Garma cultural festival in the Northern Territory.

The PM opened his speech by paying respect to the Yolngu traditional owners in their language and the proposed question was: "Do you support an alteration to the Constitution that establishes an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice?"

Listening to commentary afterwards, it was understood that this was a step in the right direction, and one that was appreciated.

This will be the first referendum in 20 years and the wording is not locked in, Mr

Albanese said, stating that the question should be clear and simple "to give the conversation shape and direction".

"I believe the tide is running our way, I believe the momentum is with us, as never before ... (and) I believe the country is ready for this reform. I believe there is room in Australian hearts, for the Statement from the Heart," the PM continued.

ednesday 27th July 2022 marked the 69th anniversary of the armistice of the Korean War. For the majority of us the only thing we know about the Korean War, we learnt by watching episodes of MASH on television as we grew up. So in reality, we didn’t learn very much.

The Korean War was fought between North and South Korea

from 25 June 1950 until 27 July 1953. Almost 18,000 Australian servicemen and women were involved in this conflict which ended in a stalemate, but not before Australia lost over 300 service personnel and around 1200 wounded.

Men and women from the Southern Downs region have long supported our Defence Force and this was no exception. I have found the details of some of those who left the tranquil setting of their homes in southeast

Queensland and stepped up to once again ‘answer the call’.

The following list is in no way complete, but the paper wishes to honour some of our brave local soldiers who were involved in the Korean conflict. My apologies to anyone whose name I may have not yet uncovered but I did not want this day to fade away without some recognition. Lest we forget.

A

new policy to recruit doctors to regional Queensland may have the opposite effect, a peak body claims.

The Federal government is implementing a change in policy to boost GPs in regional and outer metro areas by expanding the distribution priority area status.

The DPA status is a system designed to boost the number of doctors in regional and remote Australia by channelling doctors there who are subject to location restrictions - including international graduates and those in bonded medical programs.

Under the changes announced last week regional cities and metro areas will be included in the catchment areas which means that regional cities, outer metro areas

will be on par with rural and remote parts of the country in priority status.

This is likely to have unwanted consequences says the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

Currently, recruiting medical professionals to the Southern Downs and Granite Belt is difficult.

The RACGP calls it "robbing Peter to pay Paul" and does not

solve the GP shortage in rural communities. Complicating the matter is the fact that only about 16 percent of medical graduates are choosing GP training.

"What's going to happen is that doctors will move from rural and remote locations where they've been required to work…to areas they may perceive as more 'desirable'" a spokesperson said.

What is “tea”?

hink about popular sayings of late. What comes to mind?

"Laugh out loud" - or LOL took off ages ago and stuck.

You might be quite over it, although in the scheme of things, it isn't offensive and is simply a sign of something that gives delight.

As the mum of young adults, I've also had to become accustomed to other abbreviations, hence the "idk" in text messages which stands for "I don't know" and questions like, "What's the tea, mum?" being the equivalent of "What's the latest?"

"Spill the tea," in case you're wondering, isn't literal, thankfully, as that would be a complete waste of time and tea, plus potentially harmful, but asks for more information.

Right.

My nine-year-old tells me "gtg" is "got to go" and "brb" is "be right back", plus "tbh" is "to be honest" - all not too earth-shattering.

At this point I am however wondering what is actually wrong with the English language, as in, using real words.

My feeling is that real words take some time, not much time mind you, but more time nonetheless, to express, to write and to think about.

Lamenting the proper use of the English language and the reality of shortened attention spans, let's further realise this "super spreader saying" of a tendency of late to use "reach

out".

Yes, Telstra was "reaching out" to us as consumers, to check on our views on this, that and the other. Not once were they "reaching" but three times actually in the same month, and even in store, the very friendly lad serving us informed me he'd be "reaching out in about 25 minutes", when presumably less reaching elsewhere. Good.

Even our local Southern Downs Regional Council sent me an email communication "reaching out" about my request for information.

If you saw the Chris Rock and Will Smith debacle at the Oscars over some very unfriendly phys-

ical attention in front of a captive worldwide audience, you might like to know that Smith has said via Instagram recently that he "reached out to Chris.... (and) he's not ready to talk".

What was going on with all this polite "reaching", I started to ponder?

Previously we might have said and written "to be in touch" or "I'll get in touch" and maybe the notion of touching isn't such a good thing anymore so we've gone to "reaching". Could that be an explanation?

I asked some meanderers down Maryland St on the weekend if they wanted to comment on the "reaching out" concept

and trend, and this is what I heard: "I've had someone write a letter and say 'we're reaching out' for your opinion, or something along those lines, and I thought it was quite polite," Bernard said.

"Can't say I've heard of the 'reaching out' idea but maybe I'm not really caring," Darren said.

"My phone company wrote an email to 'reach out' and I thought it was good," Sarah said. "'Reaching out' is just being kind, I think," Marjorie said.

At the end of the day, being in touch and reaching out are friendly concepts. They aren't threatening and both offer a sense of respect.

In taking note of these passing or staying crazes, it seems my penchant for correct apostrophe use has now changed focus - and that's pretty "sick" apparently, says my much younger but apparently wiser, teen, nothing, of course, to do with my health.

ccording to the Bureau of Meteorology, the 2020-21 financial year was the coolest and wettest for Australia since 2016-17. After three exceptionally warm and dry years a weak La Niña influenced Australian climate, resulting in the third-wettest December on record and the wettest northern wet season since 2016-17. Improved rainfall conditions resulted in average to above average annual streamflows and water storage across large parts of the country, particularly in northern Australia and coastal catchments in the south-east. Although water storage levels improved compared to 2019-20, in many parts of the country groundwater levels

remained below average, according to reports from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Improved water availability resulted in agricultural businesses increasing their irrigated cropping with notable increases in the area of cotton and rice

planted.

The quantity of land under irrigation increased in 2020-21, with 1.9 hectares of crops and pastures under irrigation.

A

nything that includes egg custard is pure comfort food to me, and when it’s encased in a buttery puff pastry like this easy Portuguese egg tart recipe, the comfort level goes through the roof.

Portuguese egg tarts (pasteis de nata) are a specialty of Portugal, a rich egg custard nestled in a delicate pastry and baked in an oven so hot that the pastry becomes shatteringly crisp and the custard is blistered beautifully.

While most of us don’t have ovens that hot, we can still make a successful version with careful use of the broiler.

Easy Portuguese Egg Tart Recipe Equipment A delicious egg tart starts with a baking tin. In Portugal, egg tarts are made in individual minitart pans which allow for even browning on all sides.

For those of us without a stash of these specialised tart pans in our kitchen cupboards, we can make do with a muffin tin. Just be sure to rotate it once during the baking process so browning is consistent, and use a fan-forced oven if possible to ensure the heat is distributed well around each cup.

Pastry While it is fun to make pastry from scratch, Portuguese egg tarts can be made well with store bought puff pastry so long as it’s made with real butter. The butter does make all the difference in this dessert, and is wellworth the extra expense.

Rather than cutting out circles of pastry and pressing them into each muffin tin, the puff pastry is cut into strips and pressed into the tins in a spiral pattern that looks quite beautiful when removed from the tins after baking.

The trick to getting a crisp, flaky crust for these tarts is to chill the dough well after it’s been pressed into the tins. This will return the butter to a solid state and make for better crispy layers that shatter beautifully when you bite into the tarts.

Egg Custard Filling Portuguese egg tarts have a

lusciously smooth filling that is sweetened by a spiced sugar syrup rather than granular sugar.

The sugar syrup is simmered with a whole cinnamon stick before being mixed into the custard, providing a heavenly scent that fills the whole house during the baking process and makes each bite a fragrant pleasure.

Baking It is rarely a good thing to leave baking in the oven so long it turns black, but that blackening is essential in this easy Portuguese egg tart recipe. The blistered tops are a distinctive mark that set these tarts apart from their custard cousins, and provide a wonderful burnt caramel layer that goes wonderfully with the smooth custard underneath, much like the melted sugar topping of a crème brulee.

If you don’t have a commercial oven that will blast your tarts with heat sufficient to blacken the tops and crisp the bottoms, turn to your trusty broiler for the last few minutes of cooking.

Just be sure to keep a close eye on things so you don’t end up with burnt pastry.

Easy Portuguese Egg Tart Recipe Ingredients: 2-3 sheets puff pastry 1 cup granulated sugar ? cup water 1 cinnamon stick 1 1/3 cup whole milk

½ cup white flour 6 egg yolks Ground cinnamon Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 250°C. 2. In a heavy-bottom saucepan, combine sugar, water, and cinnamon stick and bring to a boil over high heat. Cook for one minute, then remove from heat and set aside.

3. Lightly flour your counter, then lay out puff pastry sheets and cut into ½ inch sliced.

Take one strip and press one end into the centre of each muffin mould, pressing into a spiral pattern, adding more strips until bottom and sides of each mould are covered and a ¼ inch of dough extends above each rim. Refrigerate

about 10 minutes.

4. While pastry chills, place 1 cup of milk into a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until bubbles form at the edges. Remove from heat. In large bowl, whisk together flour and remaining milk until smooth, then add hot milk, stirring constantly.

5. Remove cinnamon stick from sugar syrup and add the syrup to the milk mixture, whisking constantly until smooth.

6. Pour mixture back into the heavy-bottom saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens.

7. Once mixture is thick, add the egg yolks, whisking constantly.

Pour through a fine-mesh sieve, then pour 1-2 tablespoons into each pastry shell.

8. Bake 15-20 minutes, turning once, until shells are browned and crisp, custards set, and the tops blistered. If necessary, turn broiler on for the last minute of baking so the tops blackens well.

9. Let tarts cool in pans about 5 minutes before removing to cooling racks. Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve warm.

I

don’t claim to be any great expert on farming but do believe it is a good idea to strip slash long grass.

While we have slashed one corner and four rounds around the outside of a past cultivation paddock, dubbed the Six Acre, we have only done one strip in the middle of the paddock.

The plan is to slash about eight metres of long grass and leave eight metres if needed if spring turns dry which appears unlikely.

If part of the paddock is slashed, it will respond quickly to rain in the spring.

The Six Acre is the best cultivation paddock on our property and was used in the 1950s and 1960s to grow lucerne.

I don’t remember it but John ‘Hop’ Wickham from Buckhurst down the road brought his machinery to make hay for us and I assume we paid him or gave him a share of the hay.

I have grown oats in the paddock but due to the number of roos and my media involvement, have only grown it three times in the past 31 years.

I know the years as I can relate to when I started at the Daily News as sports reporter/editor

I bought a second-hand slasher at a sale at Nobby for $600 last year and it is around six foot in width, one foot wider than our Superior Slasher we bought from Rod Frahm in Clifton 30 years ago.

Rod and his wife Jeanette had an excellent machinery business next to the railway line in Clifton and it was a shock when he died suddenly.

He was easy to deal with when we bought the slasher. Rod was also heavily involved with the Wattles Rugby League Club and owned a few racehorses.

We had 5.4mm rain on Monday night which takes the annual rainfall for the seven months and a bit of this year to 507.2mm.

Our annual average rainfall is around 660mm and here’s hoping we better it this year.

Good to see a bit of fine weather as I know a lot of producers wanted fine weather to plant crops and even get some

late sorghum off.

Our tracks on the farm have noticeably dried out in the past fortnight.

Selling cattle

With the cattle market under pressure in recent weeks, I am back to my old ways of panicking.

I decided to sell our steers off the feedlot a week earlier this week but it worked out well as we have one and a bit tonnes of feed left which will do the remaining eight for three weeks or thereabouts.

Three weeks ago, we sold eight steers, 11 this week and eight to go in the future.

I am also a panic buyer, whether at a cattle sale or clearing sale.

Last week, I picked up some two-inch poly pipe from a clearing sale which I didn’t pick up at the time and will advertise in this newspaper to sell it with three other items in the next few weeks.

I paid $50 for 100 plus metres

and someone offered me $15 for 10 metres and a foot valve so I reduced my cost. I can’t see a use for it on our property and bought it on impulse as I didn’t bid on a slasher a bit earlier for our grey Fergey tractor which I regretted not buying.

The slasher sold for $300 but who knows, the buyer might have been prepared to pay twice that amount.

Years ago, I took my wife Margaret and mother-in-law Fay to Goondiwindi for a store cattle sale probably 20 years ago and kept my finger up all day buying a large load of cows for Frasers Livestock Transport to cart home. Can’t remember how many but enough for a Frasers trailer.

After the sale, we had lunch in Goondiwindi and I rang my agent to see if I had done the right thing.

The clouds in the sky added to my impulse buying but they were gone by the time we had lunch.

anaging water usage will soon be much easier for rural residents with the launch of the Water Information Queensland (WaterIQ) program.

“Water is the lifeblood in rural and regional Queensland, so it’s important we do what we can to make access to important information as easy as we can,” Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing and Minister for Water The Honourable Glenn Butcher said.

“Everything these days has been modernised to be at the click of a button, so this is just in line with the direction the industry is going. Better information about our water use will help stimulate economic development in regional communities, enabling businesses to thrive, diversify, expand and ensure our precious water resources are managed sustainably, protecting our unique environment.”

The new platform is part of Rural Water Futures, a program which is driving more transparent and sustainable water resource management in Queensland, through the delivery of better systems, policies and processes.

WaterIQ will enable users to access better, timely information and data about their water use and entitlements and include a customer portal and mobile app.

Rural water users will be able to input water meter readings via an app, streamlining the current process creating greater efficiencies, and entitlement holders will also be able to readily access their water entitlement information, and potentially, related water market information.

The consortium Adasa Systems and Clade (Simient) are working closely with the Queensland water department to deliver on the significant investment being made in the $22.7 million a year WaterIQ project.

The new platform is part of Rural Water Futures, a program which is driving more transparent and sustainable water resource management in Queensland Queensland Water Minister Glenn Butcher said the Queensland water department is investing in technology and digital solutions to ensure customers and the community have better access to accurate and timely water information and services.

“These projects will harness existing data from a range of sources and make it easier for water users to provide informa-

tion about their water usage,” he said. “The work also includes the development of platforms that allow water users and regulators to access timely water data, water services and general water-related information.”

An internal, departmental staff tool is also being developed to support the customer facing tools and progressively replace out-dated processes,

reduce red tape and shift compliance data and activities to more efficient, online processes for water users across Queensland.

“Bringing this data together and creating opportunities for water users and government staff to get timely information that helps them on a daily basis is what government should be doing,” Commonwealth Minister for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek said, “making information transparently available and helping all stakeholders make informed decisions.”

The WaterIQ app and customer web portal will begin user trials later this year.

Oh nettle, where is thy sting?

ne of the first signs of spring is the proliferation of stinging nettles in our paddocks and along the dam wall.

When I was little, the sight of stinging nettles sent me scurrying for safety, but these days, the moment I spot them my eyes light up and my brain starts planning all the things I'll be making with them.

Stinging nettles are an amazing plant. They are good for our bodies, good for our gardens, and even the fibres can be woven into fabric.

High in vitamin C and iron, plus a host of other vitamins and minerals, stinging nettles are an essential herb in my pantry. Each year I harvest the young ones before flowers set or they go to seed, and dry them. Once they're dry, the sting goes away and I can easily crumble them and store them in airtight jars in my pantry. I use the dried leaves in herbal tisanes, tinctures, and infusions, and stir them into soups, stews, and casseroles.

My friend Susan in Canada also dries hers, but she pulverises hers into powder and sprinkles the powder over whatever they're eating all winter long. I'll definitely be adding that to my repertoire this year.

Last weekend, armed with a sturdy stick and pruning shears, I harvested a wheelie bin full of stinging nettles and comfrey leaves then filled the bin with water and closed the lid. I give it a stir each day and in about two

weeks it will be ready to strain and use as compost tea concentrate.

I water it down and add it to all my plants either at the roots or as a spray.

My Scottish friend Trevor said his aunt swore by stinging nettle tea as a spray for her roses to get rid of greenfly and other bugs.

Even the sting was used in medieval times to ease pain from arthritis and rheumatism. They would apply the fresh plant to the painful joints and the sting would provide a numbing sensa-

tion that would help the sufferer.

I don't have arthritis, so I can't say which would be worse, the sting or the pain.

When harvesting stinging nettle, I cut off what I need rather than pulling the plant up by the roots because I want it to grow back. And I always make sure to leave plenty to flower and seed so I'll get an even bigger crop next year.

Note: when ingesting stinging

nettle, be aware that it can cause constipation if taken in large amounts. So, be sure to keep an eye on things and eat ample fibre and drink plenty of water to keep things running smoothly.

Sapphire Shield results Linda Mantova Downs Polo

T

hree weeks of quality country polo came to an exciting climax on Sunday with the A grade finals of the Sapphire Shield tournament held at the Downs Polo grounds in Clifton.

After a hard fought match, the local Downs Hooper Accountants team of Jack Mantova, James and Stuart Hoey, and Damien Allport, came out victorious winning by one goal in a nail biting finish to a spectacular weekend of polo.

Champion A grade pony was won by Aidan Nunn of Beaudesert, and the team of ponies was won by James Hoey of Clifton.

B grade winners were the Downs Raff team of Angus Gunn, Haydn O’Leary, Derek Gilmore and Richard Marchant, with Angus Gunn winning the B Grade team of ponies.

The Rosewood team of Lauch

Leishman, Paul MacGinley, and Beau and Simon Skerritt were winners of the C grade competition, with the sub zero winning team members being Kate Campbell, Alex Rigby, Jaun Falcon and Lach Leishman of SS Polo.

Polo action moves west over the next two weekends, with the North Star and Goondiwindi polo tournaments being held on August 6-7 and 13-14 respectively.

Around the ovals with Gerard Walsh

T

he Slade School principal from 1955 to 1958 Peter Mayhew has the sporting oval at the now Warwick Christian College named after him.

Eddie Prince, who was a later principal, named the oval after first meeting Peter in the Second World War in Burma.

When he became principal, Peter Mayhew contacted Eddie in England and he came out to work at Slade School.

The oval was established in the 1920s and the turf wicket was used when a lot of interschool cricket and many school sports were played in Warwick.

There was a grandstand on the western side to the past two decades but it was demolished due to damage from white ants.

For at least the last 50 years, the oval has been used for Warwick cricket.

It was originally known as

Slade Oval before Eddie named it Mayhew Oval.

The girls residential house at the school was later named Prince House.

The oval is now also used for

A day for hockey

ast Saturday brought another great day of hockey at Warwick Hockey Juniors.

Teams are now playing their best hockey hoping for a place in the finals in five weeks. The U7s played some fantastic hockey building their skills each week under the fabulous guidance of Carly Hansen and parents.

U9s saw Lauren R and Henni E take on the roles of coach and umpire. The games were hard fought, and bodies were put on the line both during the games and during warmups! These may be some of the smallest hockey players, but they make up for that in their fighting spirit. Go Under 9s!

Both games for the U11s were close with Fire taking out the win by one point (2-1) against Tigers.

Ruby-Fay G scored both goals for Fire while Angus H scored the sole point for the Tigers. In the Thundersticks v Blaze game Blaze won by one point too (3-4).

Thundersticks goal scorers were Leo B 1, Millie P 2. Goal scorers for Blaze were Will C and Joshua M both scoring 2 goals each.

U13s saw the usual hard slog of hockey. Blaze went down to

Tigers 7 -1. With the Blaze goal scored by Will C. Tigers goal scorers were Lachlan G 4, Cooper R 2 and Piper G 1. Fire took on the Thundersticks and lost 0-2.

Thundersticks goal scorer was Angus E with 2 goals. Our top 10 goal scorers for the season so far are Lachlan G with 27, Malcolm B 17, Will C 12, Cooper R 11, Lincoln B 9, Angus E 9, Ella R 6, Ryan K 3, Tyson P 3, Leo B 2, Ty C 2, Piper G 2, Noah H 2, Taylor R 2.

Tigers are leading the point score with 25 points, followed by Thundersticks on 19, Fire has 16 and Blaze has 12. With three more round games the possibility to make the final is any team’s game. Good luck to all teams.

Redbacks winning streaks ends

T

he South Toowoomba Bombers proved too strong for the Warwick Redbacks in their round 15 AFL Darling Downs clash at Southern Cross Oval.

On a perfect day for footy it was the Bombers who struck first. The Redbacks weren’t far away though with two goals of their own for the quarter off the boot of vice captain Shane Iles.

The second quarter was a real arm wrestle with both sides going goal for goal, kicking five each. The Clarkson swooped on a rushed kick out, converting the set shot then kicked another goal on the run shortly after to bring the Redbacks within two goals of the Bombers, however former Holman Medallist Trent Saxelby had other plans for the game, dominating the midfield battle and sending it deep into the Bombers forward line. Gabe Robbie was proving a handful for the Redbacks up forward kicking five goals for the game.

The Bombers took a 13-point lead into the

main break and came out firing in the third with a four goal to one burst. Redbacks Veteran in headgear Bardsley kicked the

Redbacks lone goal for the quarter after making the switch into attack.

Behind by 30 points heading into the last quarter and without star player Brendan Iles due to hamstring awareness in the third quarter, the Redbacks threw all they had at the Bombers, knowing a loss would end their dream of finals for 2022.

However, it was all Red and Black in the last quarter with the bombers proving to be too strong and kicking away to a 16-11-107 to 8-5-53, 54-point margin.

The Redbacks Players player for the day went to arguably the best winger in the competition Jayden Grogan who ran all day, was strong in every contest and used the footy well!

The Warwick's Gardens Galore Redbacks take on the Hawks at Warwick Credit Union Oval this Saturday and will be celebrating old boys' day!
