Bureau asked to add gauges, improve recording, in wake of floods Staff writers

G

etting accurate measures of rainfall--and indeed weather data--is key to planning everything from the Inland Rail route to the best time for planting, so it's not surprising that one local council has been lobbying the Bureau of Meterology hard for changes to reflect 'reality on the ground'. The Goondiwindi council met with from representatives from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) to address concerns about the measuring of flood levles and rain fall events in Texas and beyond. "During a workshop in Texas, residents were able to give their feedback to the BoM and look for opportunities to improve local flood gauging, modelling, and warnings," former local MP and now Goondi shire mayor

Lawrence Springborg said. "We had landholders attend from both sides of the border, who had been concerned about insufficient communication of flood warnings following major flooding in the Texas area and upstream in March 2021." The meetings were also used to feedback local observations of the more recent November '21 flood, triggered by a worry that official warnings about he volume of water flowing into local catchments was inaccurate. Council advocated to the BoM for a number of issues across the region, including: • Texas - improved automatic gauges that are more appropriately placed, especially on the New South Wales side of the Border Rivers catchment • Inglewood - at least two additional gauges in the tributaries upstream of the dam, and an(07) 46 619 835 additional gauge further upstreamE warwick@rfsteelbuildings.com.au in the Mosquito Creek / Canning Creek catchment area
