A controversial application to build a feedlot in Allora got the tick of approval during Wednesday's Council meeting to the dismay of some community members.

Before approving the feedlot, Councillors visited the property, spoke with community members who were against the intensive farming practice, studied the councils proposed mitigation strategies addressing community concerns, then after intense deliberation and a debate in council gave the farmers the thumbs up.

Country briefs Blowfly new bestie for pollination?

A species of blowfly has startled many by proving to be as effective as bees in pollination.Researchers in Western Australia have been studying the species since 2019 as part of a national project funded by Hort Innovation, and their findings have brought relief to the agriculture industry which was worried about outcomes if the current Varroa mite outbreak in New South Wales gets worse.Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) senior entomologist David Cook told ABC Rural that since blowflies have hairy legs, they pick up pollen almost by accident.Blowflies may not pro-

duce honey like their bee counterparts, but they also don't sting and their size can be bio-engineered to be smaller so they don't fly far from the crops they're intended to pollinate.

What do we value more, our cats having freedom to roam and reproduce or the future of our wildlife? It is becoming more apparent that we can't have both and its time to have your say on the matter.

The Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) is seeking public consultation on its draft Cat Management Strategy 2022-2024 that aims to reduce cats from having further detrimental impact on the environment. Community consultation will begin on Tuesday 12th July and close at 5pm Friday 12th August.

SDRC would like the community to leave feedback on topics such as, should all cats

be registered, should cats be desexed unless they are owned by a registered breeder or should cats be kept safe in their house or in a pet enclosure?

The draft strategy opens the door to conversations about responsible cat ownership and how the community can better address feline management. A

further idea being explored in the draft is the options for cat owners to limit their p e t ' s impact on wildlife w i t h affordable technologies such as cat proof fences, cat net run enclosures and electronic collars.

It is clear that doing nothing will end with the further loss of threatened native species, impacting on local biodiversity.

Southern Downs Councillor Stephen Tancred said that while domestic cats make great

companions, without appropriate management, their impact on native wildlife can be just as devastating as feral cats. "A recent inquiry into the problem of feral and domestic cats in Australia by the Commonwealth Government found that cats kill an estimated 1.6 billion native animals each year," Councillor Tancred said.

Holdings have increased by an average of nearly 2.2 million acres a year since 2015. Forests accounted for 46% of agricultural land held by foreigners. Some 29% was cropland, and pastures and other ag land accounted for 23%.

Lambs topped at $202 to average $160.29($15down), hoggets topped at $170 to average $131.35($16down), ewes topped at $182 to average $113.15($15up), wethers topped at $150 to average $117.88($7down), rams topped at $200 to average $152.09($64down),

Meat report Meat and Livestock Australia reports a slight dip in prices, bringing the lowest average price range since September 2021.

The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) has eased 39c week-on-week to 1,013.57c/kg cwt.

Good quality cattle are fetching a strong price whereas some of the plainer types are going for a heavy discount. The wet and wintery conditions from the last few months have not been aiding the quality and finish on the cattle passing through the saleyards.

This easing in prices has allowed lot feeders and processors to source young cattle under $10, further tightening the premium between feeder and restocker prices recorded recently.

Goat meat is good value. Goat OTH prices are back up to $9.20 c/kg cwt for June - the highest price since late September 2021.

Lamb slaughter has not followed seasonal norms this year, strengthening 16% to 412,570 head week-on-week after the short processing week in the southern states. This is a 36% increase on 2020 levels showing the movement of the 2021 flock rebuild and the continued supply of lambs. Most of these numbers are coming out of Victoria and NSW to reach the second highest slaughter rates in the last three years.

Sheep are also above 2020 and 2021 levels at 90,314 head

this week. The mutton indicator eased 39c week-on-week with majority of the contribution coming from Griffith who was trading 45c under the national average.

Much of this softening in prices is due to the plainer quality moving through the saleyards and the unseasonal increase in supply putting downward pressure on prices.

Cattle slaughter nearly cracked 100,000 head, reaching 99,738 head this week - the highest slaughter rate in 2022 but still 8% under 2021 levels.

The annual Alice Springs Show Feeder Steer and Heifer Sale went ahead last week with yardings of 4,139 head mostly coming from within the Northern Territory. Yearling steers contributed 47% of sales, with the top price for Angus weaner steers under 200kg going for 685c/kg for $1,269/head.

Feedlot gets green light continued from front page... the planning and they were grateful they had used a consultant in the application process to marry the business plan with council requirements.

Weighing up the impacts of the feedlot against its benefits to the shire the Councillors took into consideration the 74 submissions that had been made to council by community members, with 64 speaking against the feedlot.

Submitters had expressed concerns about road safety, visual amenity with the grain silos and cattle sheds, environmental issues from affluent and chemicals, and potential lowering of land value and limitations to future house construction on neighbouring land.

Along with various mitigation strategies designed to reduce the impact of the feedlot on the community, an amendment was made by Councillors to reduce the maximum number of cattle from 1000 to 999.

This allows future homebuilders on adjoining properties to have a 1km buffer instead of a 1.5km buffer and provides greater building options.

Cr Marco Gliori advocated for some of the submitters' concerns and spoke about the negative impact the feedlot may pose to the environment.

"Council needs to ask itself when is enough is enough, including the approval of intensive farming. The fact that we have six intensive farming operations within 10km radius of Allora doesn't necessarily mean we need another. At some stage we need to say this is not sustainable for the environment, the health of our flood plains, waterways and other farms," said Cr Gliori, who did not support the application.

In response Cr Stephen Tancred said feedlots are the most "heavily regulated agricultural industry in the world." The applicants are also under environmental regulations and he thought that "should give rural operators, residents and animal and environmental welfare groups some confidence."

Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley advocated for the economic benefits the feedlot would bring.

"If you can't build a feedlot in a rural

area, where can you build it?"

"Do we want to support our main industry, agriculture, or do we want to look after the real estate market?" The councillor was referring to the increased number of lifestyle blocks now impinging on intensive farming land and explained.

"How we value our rural versus how we value our lifestyle intrusion into the rural."

Cr Tancred applauded the significant investment the family were making through diversifying their farm.

"The application is in line with our corporate plan, community plan and planning scheme."

The councillor gave a concise summary of the mitigation strategies developed by council and the applicants and provided clarity that community concerns had been addressed in conditions to the approval of the application.

"I'm very comfortable with regards to odour, roads, noise, operation hours, environmental water and soil concerns," said Cr Tancred.

Cattle, poultry numbers up Ross Ellis McDougall and Sons

Agents this week saw numbers move up as the cattle numbers saw 541 head make the sale on Tuesday while 1047 head of sheep and lambs met the market on Wednesday. The poultry numbers were up with the pork side of things letting the side down. Conditions in the paddock are starting to influence the yarding's, there are not too many oats crops in and the paddocks are still a long way from being dry so there are more lighter stock being yarded due to some vendors inability to finish them.

Cattle: Vealer steers averaged 519.8c/ kg to a top of 676.2c/kg or $1133.81 to $1677.90. Vealer heifers averaged 431.4c/ kg to a top of 480.2c/kg or $1005.589 to $1476.62. Feeder steers averaged 507.3c/ kg to a top of 596.2c/kg or $2021.43 to $2650.52. Feeder heifers averaged 413.6c/ kg to a top of 540 c/kg or $1574.25 to $2322.00.
