esearchers at the Leslie Research Facility in Toowoomba were delighted to host the announcement of over $140 million worth of research and extension in agriculture last week.

“It’s a good time to be in agriculture,” Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries, Minister for Rural Communities, The Honourable Mark Furner said. “It’s so important that we develop and enhance the science. We want to make sure that we support the GDP that supports jobs and sees that agriculture goes well into the future.”

The funding is to drive productivity and innovation in

Queensland’s livestock, aquaculture, cropping, horticulture, forestry, timber, and food processing industries.

“It’s important that we make sure we keep up the reputation that our farmers hold,” Mr Furner said, “and that we have the research to back up the good work they do.”

Mark Hickman, Director of Sustainable Farming Systems Research, Development & Extension at Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is excited about the advancements in technology in the agriculture space.

“Technology is improving and enhancing on a regular basis,” he said to The Daily Journal.

Hot chickpeas Chickpea trials will be conducted in areas surrounding the Southern Downs, including Gatton and Toowoomba.

The research is to improve the heat tolerance of chickpeas has sparked the interest of northern grain growers, with imported breeding lines indicating the legume's planting window could be pushed into late summer.

With investment from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and the Australian Research Council (ARC), the University of Sydney obtained a diverse collection of chickpea lines from 'hot and dry' regions around the world through the Australian Grains Genebank.

A selection from this bigger group were crossed with Australian cultivars and the offspring tested for how they perform when planted in late summer The research will look at how these lines, combined with existing commercial varieties, have performed in summer trials.

The point of breeding chickpeas that are heat tolerant is for growers to better cope with climate change and to give more options to northern growers who wish to grow pulses.

The scientists looked at countries which have successfully grown chickpeas outside of the cooler months of the year.

The trials will be conducted over two years across five sites in the northern grain growing region, including Gunnedah, Nar rabri, Emerald, Toowoomba and Gatton.

While the first year of trials have been successful, there is still extensive agronomic testing that is required before growers can implement the research.

However, the crops are showing a lot of promise.

A

fter becoming a farmer and then a shire councillor, I didn’t think I would end up as a sports reporter/editor.

But I always, in my opinion, had a bit of flare for the media and remember the time Rosenthal Shire Council went into committee and Daily News reporter Debra Bull was asked to leave the room.

Before she left, she wrote a letter to the council which upset the chairman of the day.

I stuck up for her saying that if council was to go into committee, it should do so straight after lunch so the reporter wouldn’t have to spend an hour outside waiting for the council to go out of committee mid morning.

After finishing my time with Rosenthal, I covered Glengallan, Allora, Inglewood and Rosenthal meetings as a Daily News reporter for a year or so as well as doing sport. I went to one Warwick City Council meeting which at the time was held at night.

It was interesting to see councils from a different perspective.

Councillors pay

In the 1980s, a position as a councillor or alderman on a city council was definitely part-time and the salary (meeting fees) reflected that.

I had a view that if councillors meeting fees were to go up with

inflation or other costs, they should go up a little bit each year.

That is why I wasn’t happy when pay didn’t go up for many years and then went from $60 a meeting to $100 a meeting as well as a bit of travelling.

As a councillor, you did a lot more than go to meetings.

The phone would ring at anytime and you would see ratepayers about problems. At one time when farm labourers were getting $10 an hour, I worked out my councillor pay at $5 an hour.

No complaints, it was my choice to stand for council at a time it was a service to the community.

We had a cabaret at the Greymare Hall and I was president of the hall committee and still at the hall at 1am when one of the ratepayers left.

I was then a bit surprised when he rang me at 6.30am that morning about a crossing on the road to his land and woke me up.

Now council is a fulltime job and the salary reflects that.

Memories

I am not going to individualise too much on my time in the council but I have great memories of serving with Des Cooper in division 2 during my 12 years.

We didn’t always agree but we worked well together, both when he was a councillor and then deputy Mayor. I still remember his phone number from more than three decades ago.

I also served in Division 2

with Clive Springate until there was a redistribution and division 2 was reduced to two councillors and Clive retired. I was always grateful to Basil Doherty who took over for me in the division for the last term before amalgamation.

Talking councillors, in my recollection, Bev Shelley and Evaline Booth were the first two women to stand for the council.

They were in the Rosenthal Heights area and they were successful in ballots to serve on the council.

There was no anti-women feeling, it just took a while for the first women to stand.

Southern Downs Regional Council is looking at divisions, a move I support.

It gives ratepayers a chance to talk to the councillors who represent their area and a chance for councillors to take some responsibility for an area.

With no divisions, the councillors, who are the most approachable or best known, get more of the opinions or complaints and they all get paid the same except for the mayor and deputy.

After three columns with a council connection, I will move on to other things next week.

Nearly everyone is into the politics of council so I thought three columns with an inside look at local government was justified.

I thought I had another death when I spotted a red steer lying flat out between a tree and a fence.

He didn’t have his legs in the air which is a good hint he was still alive.

There was a broken wire in the fence and the red steer got it caught in his leg, went round the tree twice, and then finally fell over and trying to get up, he got his head between the bottom two wires of the fence.

Proves you need to always have pliers in each farm vehicle, I used pliers to cut the wire to untangle the steer and then pushed his head out from under the fence.

He got straight up after he was free and went straight to a bale of hay so was hungry.

Lucky catch.

Eight layers

I might be the coldest person in Southern Downs Regional Council.

On Thursday I was driving round in the buggy on the farm and had eight layers.

That was a singlet, two T shirts, shirt and four coats and I was still cold.

I took a son to the dentist and I still had eight layers inside the surgery.

Better get some more wool, only one coat was wool.

Gassy cattle?

urping, farting cattle are contributing to global warming. Meat and Livestock Australia advises growers to try to lower methane emissions by using a seaweed feed supplement, now commercially available.

According to reports from MLA, the first commercial sale of Asparagopsis feed supplement in Australia by CH4 Global is a significant step forward for the industry. This comes following the discovery that adding a small amount of Asparagopsis seaweed to a ruminant's existing feed can reduce their methane emissions by over 80%.

The importance of this discovery towards carbon neutrality by 2030 (CN30) has resulted in industry participants working tirelessly to make the product available to producers.

FutureFeed , which was formed in 2020, has issued licenses to seaweed growers which enables supply of Asparagopsis to the livestock market. There are currently three licensees in Australia: CH4 Global, Sea Forest and SeaStock.

FutureFeed the company, is supported by an impressive group of investors comprising of GrainCorp, Harvest Road Group; Woolworths Group; AGP Sustainable Real Assets; Sparklabs and-Cultiv8 Joint Venture.

Beyond licenses, FutureFeed has been busy establishing the foundations for a successful industry. This includes furthering the foundational science through research, development and trials subjected to rigorous peer-review to further support the discovery. Certification standards and a trademark are under development to ensure the robustness and credibility of the value chain.

milestone" in the Asparagopsis journey.

"It's both inspiring and humbling to reflect on how the industry has managed to engage the brains trust, community and investment support in just under four years to make a product launch like this a reality," Ms Kelly said.

"Just a few years ago, Asparagopsis was a largely unknown seaweed that was not cultivated in commercial quantities and had very few applications outside of niche cosmetics and as a condiment in Hawaii."

"Now we are seeing a new industry with the capability to support local communities and the creation of jobs whilst working together to make a meaningful impact on methane emissions from livestock."

CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall said the first commercial sale of FutureFeed was an exciting turning point for translating breakthrough science into solutions.

journey, including going through our revolutionary ON program to accelerate the idea from benchtop to business," Dr Marshall said.

MLA Managing Director, Jason Strong, said emissions avoidance was a critical component of the red meat industry achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

"MLA is continuing to work on a range of tools and technologies for producers to cost-effectively reduce emissions and increase productivity by demonstrating environmental stewardship credentials to customers, consumers and the community," Mr Strong said.

"We are proud to be working alongside FutureFeed in rolling out Asparagopsis to a range of commercial partners.

Asparagopsis is one of many exciting tools the industry can embrace in working towards our goal of carbon neutrality at the end of the decade," Mr Strong said.

Mr Hickman said drones are being used for night mustering out west, dropping seeds in inaccessible areas for regeneration, and spot spraying and spot fertilisation, allowing farmers to spray and fertilise where needed, rather than saturating the entire crop.

“We’re going to see quite a revolution,” he said.

Mr Furner is in awe of how the industry has transformed in recent years.

“I love science,” he said.

“We trusted the science during COVID and the result was thousands of lives saved. Our investment in agricultural science and extension will help

Queensland farmers to lead the nation and the world. It’s brilliant to see what changes can develop in the span of just a few years,” he said. “The tech is really important, but it’s the people that make it sing.

With all the great tech we have, we still need to have great people behind it.”

alling all professional and hobby beekeepers to help observe the native stingless

bees.

The University of Queensland has launched a new citizen science project to better understand how native stingless bee colonies reproduce. Bee lovers on the Southern Downs can certainly add to the project's knowledge base and the university needs our help to understand stingless bee behaviour.

"While all bees are incredibly important players when it comes to biodiversity, native stingless bees are crucial pollinators of our native plants and wildflowers," Dr Gurion Ang, lead researcher, said.

"But there's actually a lot that science is yet to learn about these

fascinating insects."

The project is aiming to build a long-term dataset of the bees, using simple observations of hives being kept in Australian backyards or known native colonies.

"It's as easy as watching the hive's entrance for three minutes a week and recording some information about the bee behaviour you can see," Dr Tobias Smith, another researcher on the project explained.

"After registering your hive online, we supply a unique QR code sticker linking the bee colony to our online data collection form and you can start logging your observations."

Dr Smith said the project's website at https://biological-sciences. uq.edu.au/engagement/ native-bee-citizen-science-project will help citizen scientists identify if their stingless bee colony is

thriving.

"We'll be looking for signs it may be reproducing and establishing a new daughter colony.

"This tells us a colony is strong, well-established and the environmental conditions are suitable," Dr Smith said.

The project is open to collaboration with school groups, as well as the general public.

"It's a great way for school communities keeping stingless beehives to show students how data they collect can contribute to important scientific discovery," Dr Smith said.

The results of the research will be published in peer-reviewed journals.

"And of course, we'll email all the citizen science beekeepers to let them know what we discover about Australian stingless bees with their help," said Dr Smith.

hen it's bitterly cold outside, a big bowl of soup is just the thing to warm body and soul.

From Macaroni and Cheese Soup with Roasted Cherry Tomatoes to thick and savoury Broccoli Stilton Soup, the options for delicious soups are endless.

Creamy Potato Soup with Fresh Dill A potato soup is a welcome guest at any meal. A basic potato soup starts with fried onions, good chicken stock, and lots of potatoes. From there you can build all sorts of wonderful variations. Add sliced farmer’s sausage or diced smoky bacon for a hearty potato soup that smells divine, or keep it vegetarian and amp up the fragrance factor with a generous spoonful of fresh thyme leaves and a cup or two of corn. You could also stir in smoked salmon or oysters for a scrumptious chowder.

Gingery Red Onion Soup This is my take on the tradi-

tional French Onion Soup, and it is the best thing to sip on a cold winter’s night while the wind howls outside. I use loads of red onions fried long and slow until they’re meltingly soft and sweet as candy. At the end I stir in a generous portion of grated fresh ginger and a couple of cloves of chopped garlic.

This ensures a soup that is not only rich in flavor, but full of cold and flu-fighting properties.

I love the addition of bread and cheese to French Onion Soup, so I always add it to this

version too. I use whatever bread I have on hand, croutons, toast batons, or broken crackers, and top it with whatever cheese I can find, parmesan, cheddar, or even feta. They are all rich and scrumptious.

fter finding that apple trees excrete sugars onto their leaf surface as a natural deterrent to codling moth egg laying, Algerian researchers have found that applying micro amounts of sugar to fruit trees reduces the incidence of codling moths in harvested fruit.

By adding sugar to standard pesticides, it increases the level of control achieved.

“This is an environmentally

friendly method of controlling codling moth and is an acceptable method for organic fruit growers,” Apple and Pear Australia (APAL) said. “Given the cost of this treatment and the fact that its effect is present when added to standard insecticides sprays it would seem prudent to start using this treatment in future seasons. It is possible that in years to come the combined treatment will allow for reduced amounts of traditional insecticide being applied in a season.”

Creamy Potato Soup with Fresh Dill Ingredients: 1 large onion, peeled and diced 1 Tbsp butter or olive oil 5 large potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 1-2 Tbsp fresh dill, chopped 1 tsp sea salt 1 tsp ground black pepper 6-8 cups chicken or vegetable stock ¼ cup heavy cream Fresh dill for garnish Directions: 1.

Set a large soup pot over medium-high heat. Add butter/olive oil and onions, and fry until onions are translucent and begin to brown.

Add potatoes, dill, salt, pepper, and stock. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer

20-30 minutes until potatoes are fork-tender.

3.

Remove from heat and puree with an immersion blender. Stir in heavy cream.

4.

Serve hot with fresh dill for garnish.

Gingery Red Onion Soup Ingredients: 2 Tbsp olive oil 4-5 red onions, peeled and diced 1 Tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and grated 2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced 6-8 cups beef stock 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground black pepper 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 cups croutons 1 cup grated parmesan cheese Directions: 1.

Set a large soup pot over medium-high heat. Add butter/olive oil and onions, and fry until onions are soft and melting, about 30 minutes. Add ginger and garlic and stir to combine.

Add stock, salt, and pepper. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer 10-15 minutes.

3.

Remove from heat and stir in Worcestershire sauce.

4.

Ladle into bowls, top with croutons and parmesan cheese. Place bowls under hot broiler in oven until cheese melts. Serve hot.
