rotection athlete Brodie Frizzell was badly injured by a bull at Professional Bull Riders’ bull ride at Dittmann Bucking Bulls.

"It was just a regulation situation while fighting bulls Saturday night when this cheeky fella caught me out getting his horn up under my vest and pinning me to the chute," Brodie said after the accident. "Words can’t describe how grateful I am to the ambos and Careflight for making a plan super fast and keeping me stable all way to hospital. Not sure when I’ll be back into the game but one thing for sure it won’t be long."

RACQ Central Queensland airlifted Frizzell to Mackay Hospital with injuries to his head and abdomen.

Beef recovery Toxicity tool steady but slow Rabobank reports that while Australian beef production recovery is well underway, it is "unlikely" to reach full potential this year.

Rabobank predicts that the national herd will continue to rebuild, but supply chain limitations will impede sector growth in 2022. In the report, titled 'Recovery well underway but the process will be slow', the agribusiness banking specialist says as cattle numbers start to lift, they will create additional pressures in the already-constrained supply chain and have implications for sales and prices.

"Increased cattle numbers will see some of the urgency leave the cattle-buying market, so prices will drift down. But domestic consumption and export markets are favourable, and we don't believe there will be any rapid price drops," the report says.

"As cattle numbers increase, buyers will become more discerning. If people are going to continue to pay high prices, they will choose the better-quality cattle."

Report author, Rabobank senior animal proteins analyst Angus Gidley-Baird said it was expected heavier discounting would be seen of "poorer cattle and those that don't meet specifications".

"Additional cattle will also load up the supply chain. And existing constraints like freight costs, container access, port congestion and labour availability at processing plants will come under further pressure," he said.

"These constraints will limit the ability to expand capacity to meet the increase in cattle numbers and may lead to some delays in processing cattle and to additional downward pressure on prices."

HORTICULTURE NOW INVITED TO SHARE

$10 million in netting funds

Hail, birds and flying foxes are slightly less of a worry this week compared to last week thanks to an additional $10 million in Federal funding for crop netting. Not only has the pile of funds available increased, a wider variety of crops are eligible for the funding on the Southern Downs.

"It is disappointing that the Queensland Labor Government won't take the opportunity to match this funding," MP and Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud told the Country Journal last week from an orchard in Applethorpe.

State MP and Ag Minister Mark Furner had to be reminded to sign off on the agreement in time for the deadline, he claims.

"We nearly lost it," he said.

The first tranche of Horticulture Netting funding in 2019-20 allocated $2.16 to Queensland. That figure rose by a further $10.9 million for the 2021-22 round. The dollars have increased and so have the categories of eligible

crops. Now the netting schemes are available to more than apple growers and include a wider array of hor ticulture crops in the region.

S a r i n a Maggiolo from Sunstate Fruits in Applethorpe told the Countr y Journal that the third-generation family farm lost 80 percent of their crops in a 2019 hailstorm.

She and her husband, Anthony, hosted Mr Littleproud in their orchard for the netting funding announcement, as apple trees all around groaned under the weight of ripe fruit.

"We can't grow without hail netting," Anthony says, particularly as the big retail buyers only want fruit without blemishes.

"They're very rigid in their expectations," he says.

Horticultural netting provides a range of benefits beyond protection from storms, including keeping out animals and reducing water usage. Queensland's horticulture sector produced more than $3 billion worth of fruit, nuts and vegetables in 201920.

Ukrainian journalist Iurii Mykhailov has reported in Successful Farming that Russia has increased its plundering activities in the Ukraine.

"They plan to withdraw grain from the occupied territories of Ukraine. Deputies of the city of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia voted almost unanimously to take grain from the Kherson region because in many Russian regions, there is a catastrophic shortage of grain and vegetables as well.

This shortage is caused by the Western sanctions imposed on Russia. The decision was immediately published on the Legislative Assembly of the Krasnoyarsk Territory website but was later removed. Authorities claim the website was hacked."

Mr Mykhailov told the journal that from early March, Russian marauders looted John Deere harvesters (S770 and S760 with headers), John Deere tractors (6195M), as well as Väderstad Tempo seed drills from the Melitopil site (Zaporizhzhia region) of the Dnipro-based company Agrotek. The company is the official dealer of John Deere in Ukraine. All equipment was transported to Chechmya, a Republic of Russia.

However, the equipment has

reportedly been rendered useless by a remote-locking system that prevented the thieves from turning the equipment on.

Russian looters also took 20 tons of lubricants. Together with the stolen farm machinery the loss for Agrotek is 1.5 million euros (approximately $1.6 million).

On March 15, five foreign ships (different flags and crews: mostly Turkish or Russian) left the port of Berdyansk (Zaporizhzhia region) on Azov sea, loaded with Ukrainian grain. Earlier, two Russian patrol ships with painted identification marks entered the port of Berdyansk.

On April 26, 2022, armed Russian military, threatening

to use physical violence, looted a branch of one of the agricultural companies in the city of KamenkaDneprovskaya (Zaporizhzhia region). Marauders took out 61 tons of wheat and other property stolen from the enterprise on a GAZ-53 truck, which also was the property of the company.

These reports are only the latest in a series coming from growers and farmers in the Ukraine. The losses, destruction and shortages are causing havoc to Western commodities markets and will continue to do so for the rest of 2022, according to most pundits.

Leyburn accident A serious accident in Leyburn this week resulted in emergency evacuation to hospital for the two people involved.

Paramedics and a rescue helicopter were called to Leyburn on Thursday (5 May) after a single-vehicle accident involving three people on Leyburn Forest Road at about 5:19 pm.

A teenage girl was airlifted to Toowoomba Hospital in a serious but stable condition with burns to her arms. She also maintained spinal and pelvic injuries. A man in his 40s was also transported, by ambulance, to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition with burns to his face.

The Southern Downs is awash in water, Federal grants, and glorious autumn weather but not all was great news on the shire this week.

Your elected representatives, Federal MP David Littleproud and State MP James Lister, talked down recent reports that indicate some weaknesses in Maranoa and the Southern Downs. The Climate Council reported that the number of properties that will be deemed "uninsurable" by climate change in the Maranoa is the third highest in the nation.

We caught up with Mr Littleproud in an apple orchard in Applethorpe on Wednesday where he questioned the research behind the announcement.

He didn't seem too impressed with the Climate Council's methodology and warned that reports like that will do nothing but scare off insurers and reinsurers.

MP James Lister was scathing of the Climate Council and pointed out that, in his opinion, they have made quite a few bad calls in the past. The Council is "climate change doom merchant Tim Flannery's mob" and they not long ago predicted that "our dams would be empty and that we'd have no more snow in Australia".

A smaller than expected yarding of 865 head was presented to the selling panel by the Agents for the weekly sale.

The market was firm to dearer with some categories up as high as we have seen. The processing platform was undermined by the lower numbers but the local processors and the restockers were in full flight. "There's always a sense of nervousness," Anthony said.

He hopes that young farmers entering the industry need support and encouragement.

Producers are expected to be able to apply to Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority for netting grants by the end of May. The funding program will allow growers to access 50 percent of the cost of purchasing and installing protectdive netting.

UNDERSTANDING ROO BREEDS IN S DOWNS Kylie Hiberd Kangaroo Kapers Wildlife Sanctuary

Kangaroos are part of the background scenery for growers in the Southern Downs but one resident would like to educate us about the macropods in the region.

Kylie Hiberd, who operates Kangaroo Kapers Wildlife Sanctuary in the Southern Downs, told the Country Journal that there is an increase in the number of joeys coming into care at the moment.

"I thought I would quickly write up some information about the species of macropods you are most likely to see, and some timely reminders about what to do if you come across a joey."

Grey kangaroos are the most common species that come into care. This is due to the increased likelihood of kangaroos being near traffic, they also tend to run into fences more due to their size, they are slower to react to potential dangers compared to other species, and the length of their development.

When in care they can sometimes be tricky and stubborn little things. They tend to over exaggerate their feelings or not show a single sign whatsoever that something is wrong. Out of all the species, they have the most issues in regard to illnesses and diseases. Out of all the species it is absolutely essential that greys

are raised and released in a mob, around four joeys are minimum.

Swamp wallabies.are the most adorable and cuddliest critters out of the species.

The love nothing more than to sleep on your heart, and wildlife carers tend to go a bit silly and crazy over their smell. Dedicated Swamp wallaby carers live for it. At around the 2 kg mark, Swampies tend to develop their stranger danger behaviour, and it's really important to have hidey holes and tunnels. They are the most solitary out of all the species, and you tend to never see them again once released.

They tend to be the most bulletproof out of all the species and have very few health problems. This has changed over the last four years or so, with a suspect

mosquito virus causing epileptic seizures and fatalities.

Wallaroos are the naughtiest of them all. Dedicated wallaroo carers have the patience of a saint. Wallaroos are prone to stomping around, being very loud, very bitey, very wilful don't hesitate to hit, or kick or throw something. They have an A + attitude and get away with so much mischief. They are best raised in multiples, and their character is certainly something to see. Underneath all of that bravado though, are seriously sooky animals. You really need to know what you are up against when raising wallys. They are very good health wise with no known issues.

Redneck wallabies look like they are the most fragile of all the species. Thay have the widest range of behaviours,

from sooky and cuddly to being pretty independent.

They are the quickest out of all the species to stand up, being independent, weaned, and released.

They should be raised with at least a buddy, and it doesn't really matter of what species, they tend to be everyone's friend. They used to be pretty bulletproof health wise, but they have developed a number of issues including the seizure disorders, and toxoplasmosis which is caught from cats, is hitting the species pretty hard.

So, things to remember when you find a joey: never ever try to raise one if you are unlicenced and unregistered. It is illegal.

Never give cow's milk, and preferably don't offer anything at all unless it is the middle of summer. Keep warm, furless joeys need extra warmth so a hot water bottle nearby will help. Keep quiet in a dark area, as joeys normally live in a humidicrib of sorts being the mum's pouch. Don't over handle as stress and shock are the biggest issues within the first few hours of care. COUNTRYJOURNAL It is week three for our 30 steers on feedlot mix (grain) in a small paddock on our property west of Warwick.

Seems like the cattle market has peaked for now so the hope is the market will be strong enough when we sell to make something out of the lot feeding.

Without a set of scales, you can't make an accurate assessment of your profit from lot feeding as you can't weigh the cattle when you first put them on grain.

You need to calculate the grain they consume and estimate the value to the cattle when they went into the feedlot.

The major expense is grain but you also need to have some roughage which means buying a round bale a week which is an extra expense.

We buy six tonnes of grain at a time and have three feeders, one which holds four tonne and two which hold two tonne each.

The balancing act is to work out when you need the next load of grain and especially when the cattle are ready for market so as not to have too much left at the end of the feeding program.

You climb up the ladder to the top of the feeders and estimate how much is left.

are no 'essential jobs' or exercise periods, let alone a trip to the shops each day, as we had during the Australian lockdowns. There it is total and enforced, until the government says so. The impact on the Chinese economy is expected to quite severe, and President Xi has reportedly said he will do whatever it takes to restore economic activity. This would obviously involve large government infrastructure stimulus - probably not too many more apartments though.

Nevertheless, supply from Australia is beginning to wane - as is usual for May - with only 41,000 bales rostered for sale next week. This may be contributing to the current Chinese buyer enthusiasm, or perhaps like wool growers in Australia, they are just an optimistic bunch.

With the other major natural fibre - cotton - having a stellar price run, on the back of supply concerns, it is difficult to see wool prices coming down too much.

New plantings of cotton across Southern USA are reducing by the day as rain fails to materialise.

China has begun stock buying from the US as well, indicating that perhaps their usually secretive government stockpile levels are not as big as expected. This, and

the potential lack of export from India is pushing the cotton price up higher and higher. Current prices are well over double the pre-pandemic level, so it is pretty hard for processors and retailers to be complaining about the price of wool, which in USD terms is only at the same price point as when the virus first emerged.

So, downside for wool prices in USD terms should be limited, and potentially higher in AUD terms if currency trends continues.

Upside however is probably limited or capped by the uncertainty of where we will be in 6 months' time. Given that most of the wool for the Autumn/Winter 2022/23 season has now left our shores, and we will just be refilling the pipeline from now on, buyers in any market will be a little reluctant to pay more for something they are yet to sell.
