ELIZABETH VONEIFF, COUNTRY JOURNAL Preparation for bushfires is an urgent responsibility for everyone living in the Southern Downs, particularly the Granite Belt.

Free bushfire preparedness workshops will be held in Glen Aplin this month which will offer advice on property fires and fire management.

Sessions will provide information to landholders and guidance on creating individual property fire management plans. These plans will aim to mitigate the risks associated with bushfires, with a specific focus on helping communities in safeguarding individual properties. We also wish to build upon the experiences and learnings from those landowners that protected their properties from the 2018 & 2019 fires.

An information afternoon and fire management planning workshops are planned. Representatives from the Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium, Southern Down Regional

Council, Rural Fire Service Queensland, SQ Landscapes, Stanthorpe Rare Wildflower Consortium and government land management agencies, will share information about their roles and offer advice about planning for the approaching fire season.

Minimum requirements for the planning workshop is 1.5 hectares unless the property is next to or adjoining a very large natural area.

The Queensland Department of Agriculture is asking for you to help them help you. “As rain continues across South East Queensland, we’re encouraging primary producers to fill in our online Natural Disaster Impact Survey,” said a spokesperson for the department.

“Simply tell us about damage to infrastructure, livestock or crops – and upload a photo or two. “ The survey can be accessed via https://arcg. is/1j5Ge8 or you can also report damage to the DAF customer service centre on 13 25 23.

DAF has been working with industry on this online survey. The information will help assess the level of assistance required to support community recovery.

Council wrap Councillors migrated to Killarney this week to meet and mix with the locals.

The Wednesday session, which took place at the Killarney Senior Citizens Centre, attracted about 10 residents, the media and a full cast of Councillors barring Cr Jo McNally, who is at a conference, and Cr Cynthia McDonald, whose son has COVID. The main topic of conversation centred around Council’s “core business”: namely, roads, drainage and mowing. The Condamine River Road and its long list of attendant anxieties and complications were discussed for at least half an hour between residents, the Mayor and the Director of Infrastructure.

Traditional native food knowledge and production systems will take centre stage at the 26th annual Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ (DAF) popular Hermitage Research Facility Schools Plant Science Competition in August.

“This year’s competition is themed around our first nations’ 60,000 years of traditional native food knowledge and production systems combined with 125 years of DAF’s agricultural science research,” Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said.

Elderly man robbed in car purchase BY: KRISTA BJORN STAFF WRITER Three men have been charged after allegedly assaulting and robbing a 75-year-old man at Pittsworth last Saturday. Around 1.30pm, the three men attended the 75-year-old’s Taylor Street property to negotiate the sale of a vehicle.

Negotiations broke down and the group allegedly began to assault the man by punching and kicking him. During the alleged assault, one of the men allegedly struck the 75-year-old over the head with a rock. Bystanders intervened, causing the group to run off, not before allegedly stealing the man’s mobile phone.

Toowoomba detectives today travelled to

Tiaro and arrested three men aged 26, 31 and 51.

All three have been charged with robbery whilst armed in company. They have been refused police bail and will appear in Maryborough Magistrates Court tomorrow. The trio are known to each other.

Beware the mozzie bite The risk of mosquito-borne illnesses is high in South-east Queensland after heavy rainfalls created prime breeding ground for insects.

“Mosquitoes carry multiple and potentially dangerous illnesses, and people in rain-affected areas are particularly vulnerable right now given these conditions are ripe for mosquito activity,” Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said. ““Some of the most common mosquito-borne illnesses are Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and malaria, though these are only some of what can be spread by a mosquito bite.”

The situation has worsened thanks to the detection of Japanese encephalitis virus in samples taken from a commercial piggery in southern Queensland.

“Disease caused by the virus occurs most commonly in pigs and horses but can be transmitted to humans from mosquito bites,” the Minister said. “Most people infected with the virus are asymp-

tomatic, but it can cause fever, headaches, rashes and – in severe cases – serious neurological illness including convulsions. An expected rise in mosquito activity in south-east Queensland means there may be a higher chance of the virus being transmitted now, so people must protect themselves.”

Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard encouraged people to take simple but effective steps to minimise the risk of mosquito bites. One: Apply insect repellent Two: Wear loose clothes to cover arms and legs

Three: Wear closed-in shoes Four: Remove standing pools of water from around homes and yards “This is critical for people who may need to clean-up in and around their properties affected by recent rainfall and flooding because standing water allows mosquitoes to breed in large numbers,” Dr Gerrard said. “If it is safe to do so, people can reduce potential breeding sites by removing any standing pools of water around their house and yard, including clearing debris from ditches and filling in holes and vehicle wheel ruts. Most mosquito bites will result in no issues or symptoms, but it is important people speak with their doctor if they experience body aches, diarrhoea, headaches, fever, feelings of nausea, or any other notable symptoms.”

Krista’s patch....

Stormy weather Like most places in the region this week, our farm is a soggy place indeed.

Everywhere you look are puddles and mud and crevasses in the hillsides where water rushed down in temporary waterfalls.

There’s also green grass. So much grass.

Grass in places that haven’t seen grass in three years.

It’s gorgeous and lush and slightly terrifying as I wade through it to do chores, fully expecting snakes to nibble at my ankles any moment.

We didn’t do much on the farm this week except make sure the animals had shelter and feed, but we’re going to have a busy weekend of weeding and planting and bringing the goats and sheep into the house yard to eat down the grass and make it less of a snake haven.

There are kitchen shelves to finish building, spruce tip cough syrup to make, and bread rolls to bake.

With the rain keeping us indoors, I spent most of the weekend

in our kitchen making a big pot of ham and potato soup, five jars of white peach jam, and two batches of roasted tomato sauce.

I also kept busy filling glass jars given to me by a lovely lady from Spring Creek. They now hold bulgur wheat, three different kinds of sugar, pasta, rice, popcorn, and other dry goods. It feels so good to have them safely out of reach of the mouse we saw scurry-

ing through the living room last night.

I recently made two trips to Stanthorpe and came home with boxes of Roma tomatoes, white peaches, yellow peaches, sugar plums, blood plums, muscat grapes, a couple varieties of potatoes, yellow onions, red onions, and new season apples that are wonderfully crisp and sweet.

I’m excited to make onion jam, apple butter, and perhaps a golden peach liqueur to warm our bones this winter.

It’s almost time to harvest our quinces and pomegranates, so we’ll trudge into the muddy orchard once the ground dries out a bit to see if they’re ready. They look so beautiful on the trees, the quinces soft and fuzzy and the pomegranates red and glossy. I hope they taste as good as they look.

Sea of destruction STAFF REPORTS While we’ve escaped the worst of the flooding that has occurred in all the regions around us, spare a thought for growers in the Northern Rivers who are bracing for even worse flooding after a massive deluge in the region earlier this week. There’s been a sea of destruction, both in the fields and the supply chains that have seen supermarket shelves stripped of fresh produce--even locally.

NSW Farmers Lismore Branch Chair and macadamia farmer Warren Elvery said there would be major losses as a result of the flooding, which was the worst he had ever seen.

“There are going to be big losses in the industry in terms of quality and quantity,” Mr Elvery said.

The area had 347 mm of rain on Monday and all the work to prepare for harvest could be for wasted. “I remember the sea of water we had back in 1974 and 2017 – this is far worse than that already and they reckon this rain could hang around a while yet.”

Brisbane Markets turn into aquarium

Fruit and vegetable growers in the Southern Downs and Granite Belt would have been inconvenienced by the closure of the Brisbane Produce Markets over the weekend and early this week. Many traders struggling to make alternate arrangement to sell, or even store, their fruit and vegetable produce.

The management of Brisbane Markets Limited asked wholesalers and fresh produce companies not to attempt to access the markets until further notice, with water inundation expected to reach eight metres (AHD), around one metre lower than the 2011 floods, with water covering the Central Trading Area.

Personnel is on-site who have implemented our flood management plan to ensure that critical services and infrastructure can be reinstated once floodwaters start to recede.

Drone photos show the extent of the water levels at the markets, with water covering the entire wheels of some of the trucks, with the entire site covered by floodwaters.

One employee of the markets reported earlier this week that levels of flood waters inside the market have not subsided even though the sun is out. There is no sign of when operations may be able to resume or clean up begin.

“We have been told that we cannot get in until further notice, it hasn’t relaxed at all from what we know,” he said. “I, like many others, have produce stuck in warehouses that are flood affected, and in turn without cool storage due to a loss of power in site. There will be some really bad losses. I don’t know exactly, but I don’t see it improving for the next week or two. If the markets aren’t open, there are not really any other points for produce to be sold in Brisbane or distributed, unfortunately. We’re facing the fact that people might just have to deal with the shortage of fresh produce for the short term.”

Some other wholesale businesses at the markets have set up ‘satellite sites’ in other parts of the city to be able to sell a select range of their produce, where possible, while others have had to send produce interstate to Sydney, with external storage facilities starting to fill up. Mr Bicknell added that for Produce Art, it was a scramble to be able to sell produce that was just able to arrive in the city today.

“Fortunately, we have been able to work around it and use some of the freight forwarders that aren’t affected and able to load out of their sites and also we have redirected a lot of our

Turnip Apple Soup with Elderflower KRISTA BJORN, COUNTRY JOURNAL

A recipe for turnip soup may sound like torture or a bad joke, but with the addition of apples, elderflowers, and a bit of maple syrup, the dreaded turnip can become something delicious and comforting.

This turnip soup recipe is a beauty, so easy to make and, even though it’s both dairyfree and gluten-free, full of flavour.

It’s nice served hot or cold and looks beautiful topped with fresh elderflowers, fresh lemon thyme leaves, and chopped toasted hazelnuts. It’s great for lunch with buttered toast soldiers or a grilled cheese sandwich or as a starter for dinner with a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese, some herbed croutons, and a pile of crispy fried onions.

Lemon thyme and elderflowers for garnish Directions: In small saucepan, bring 2 cups broth to the boil then remove from heat. Stir in elderflowers and set aside to steep for 5-10 minutes. Strain. In large soup pot over medium heat, add olive oil and onion. Cook 3-5 minutes or until onions begin to soften but not brown. Add turnips, potatoes, apples, second portion of broth, lemon thyme leaves, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine. Raise heat to medium-high and bring to the boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes until vegetables are soft. Remove from heat and stir in elderflower-infused broth and maple syrup. Pour carefully into blender and pulse until smooth.

In a week of tumult, at least wool remained calm CONTRIBUTED BY: BRUCE MCLEISH, ELDERS In a week of turmoil, the Australian wool market has maintained a calm demeanour.

Reasonable demand from China, Europe and India overcame the effects of increased supply, as the Cape came back on line, and the wool buyer fraternity managed their cash flows just to allow the wheels to keep turning smoothly.

Australia’s greasy wool market managed an overall gain of 1 cent, as measured by the AWEX EMI. In USD it closed 4 cents lower and the Europeans saw an increase of 11 Euro cents, although that is hardly their biggest worry right now. The resumption of sales in South Africa after a one-week hiatus to try and clear some of the wharf backlog saw a strong jump in prices there with a 2.9% increase, which equates roughly to a 40-cent jump in our terms. As usual around 25% of their catalogue of mostly finer micron merino wools were certified sustainable wools, compared with a much smaller percentage of these wools currently available in Australia.

The actual premiums received both here and in the Cape for these certified wools continues to be large, providing the traditional specifications are also correct in terms of length and strength etc. However, there is also a limit to the market for these wools, and there are some early signs that current volumes are approaching equilibrium and the premiums have certainly stopped increasing as they were consistently earlier in the season. Still, a premium of around 20 to 25% over ‘normal’ wools is worth chasing if one’s current farming practices allow your farm to become certified as sustainable under one of the existing schemes.

Superfine merino types were again very

solid at auction this week as European buyers competed strongly with Chinese interests for the remaining high quality lots on offer. With a solitary designated superfine sale remaining on the calendar for this season, this week in Sydney, buyers of this type of wool will have had to manage their purchasing requirements to cover the gap between this coming week and Early July, when they start to reappear.

Medium merino wool is seeing solid demand, although buyers are reacting to the increasing degree of fault in the clip as overseas buying instructions dictate. Low VM, well grown, high yielding wools are in high demand, but the limitations of processing capability in China begins to have an effect on prices as soon as the yield drops, or the VM increases.

As usual, skirting types followed the price action of their relative fleece components, and crossbred wools held up remarkably well given the large, and increasing supply of these, especially crossbred lamb’s wool which seems to be everywhere at present.

Cardings were a bit choppy as processors try to work out the hazy demand signals in what is normally the zenith of their processing season.

Although the first shots were not fired in Ukraine until after the Australian wool auctions had been completed for the week, the suspense and tension has been building for some time and it is certainly affecting the psyche of everyday Europeans.

Buying and processing wool is still a key behaviour for those involved in the early stages of the processing industry across Europe, but increasingly wholesalers and retailers will be assessing the consumer sentiment, or the potential damage to it as this conflict continues. Business is still going on between the rest of the world and Russia, but costs of doing so are increasing

substantially, and the flow of funds to and from Russia is about to become very difficult. Whilst not a huge amount of Australian wool goes directly to Russia, they are a large consumer market for finished products given their climatic conditions and historical appreciation for the thermal benefits of wool. Hopefully many more Europeans will also ‘wool up’ in coming weeks as the 30% increase in energy costs makes heating their homes just that bit harder.

The other major market for Australian wool is still more concerned with domestic covid problems than global territorial issues. Moving product around China for processing and keeping the actual mill workforce covid free remains a challenge and production is only just able to keep up with current demand. There has been a reduction in capacity in recent years, as smaller, older mills have been wound up, and in a busy period as we have now, the remaining processing capacity is fully utilised, or even stretched. The usual slow return of workers after the Chinese New Year holiday period is adding to the challenge of regaining 100% efficiency, and shipping delays compound the issue further. The Chinese domestic market appears to be undergoing a quality evolution this season, with brands not focussing solely on price as before, but with the current supply chain issues, quality, delivery service and reliability are deemed more important. This bodes well for the future of the wool business in China, and for Australia as a supplier, as previously substitution and acceptance of poor quality often meant that high quality, expensive Australian wool was left in the warehouse in favour of cheaper, lower quality alternatives.
