Remembering Liz

Boris the bull is being considered for entry into the 10k walk at the next Olympics after an escapade that ended at New Year’s. The 800 kg Angus bull Boris walked 10km from Gerard Walsh’s Greymare property to the Cunningham Highway at Rodgers Creek, perhaps looking to spend a night or two out on the town in Goondi or Warwick.

Mum and community stalwart, nurse and aged care worker, netballer and swimmer, Liz Marshall was well known across the Southern Downs in almost three decades of work and life. In this edition, Gerard Walsh remembers a wonderful lady who was perhaps best known for decades of service at the Akooramak Care for Older Persons facility.

Berry good labour Southern Downs strawberry producers can take heart from Queensland Strawberry Growers’ Association president, Adrian Schultz, who reflected on the success of the labour attraction program.

The registration portal opened in early April 2021 and by early October, over 5,500 people had registered to take part in the ‘chance to play to win up to $100,000’ promotion aimed at attracting workers. More than 2,500 people went on to work on the 31 participating farms across the Queensland winter strawberry growing regions.

Surprisingly, over 40 percent of all people registering were Australian, many from interstate.

Interestingly, last week saw one of the better known local berry farms, Ashbern Farms, close its premises to the public to try and ensure that COVID keeps ‘out’ and staff are able to continue (see story in last Friday’s Daily Journal and Stanthorpe Record).

Keep them sweet Global warming will decrease the yields and quality of many berry crops and the concentrations of sugars in strawberries will be affected by climate change.

According to DAF, higher temperatures could lead to lower concentrations of the main sugars in strawberries in the Southern Downs, affecting the eating quality. Efforts need to be made to develop heat-tolerant cultivars with high and stable concentrations of sugar.

Experiments are currently underway on the Sunshine Coast to confirm reports from scientists overseas and the Queensland Government is funding further research with the help of the Florida Strawberry Growers’ Association.

Resilience Plans Queensland Farmers’ Federation has welcomed funding to deliver a Farm Business Resilience Plan project that will build the strategic management capacity of farmers. The program, funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, will identify vulnerabilities for participating farms to improve the resilience of the Queensland agriculture sector. Interested? Enticing Things aren’t going well with trade with China at the moment, but China is not the beginning and end of Asian agricultural exports. A virtual agriculture and food trade mission to South Korea has been announced, part of a "new normal" approach to international business according to Mark Furner, Queensland's Minister for Agriculture.

The virtual trade mission is an effort to support agri-food exporters to maintain and develop business relationships in key export markets.

Last week, 30 emerging agric-food exporters from Cairns to the Lockyer Valley gathered online for the Trade and Investment Queensland's Export Readiness Workshop to learn about doing business in Queensland's fourth largest agricultural export market, Korea.

mangoes and table grapes and has elasticity in the market for more Australian food products.

Korean consumer preferences have changed during the pandemic, and Korean families, much like Australian families, are doing much more home cooking during the various lockdowns. There is increased interest in food and drinks that offer additional health benefits.

As part of the trade mission, a Queensland Food Innovation Seminar has also introduced Korean buyers, distributors

Crystal balling agriculture in '22 After two years of border and customer disruptions, spiking costs, supply chain snarls, Chinese embargos and volatile prices, what can Southern Downs growers expect from 2022? Well if the last two years have proven anything, it is that the art of prophecy isn't getting any easier.

However, most experts agree that the biggest impact is the continued difficulties in sourcing labour. A summary of the ANZ agriculture report, published last month, generally predicts higher prices for most commodities but risks from extreme weather and transport interruptions. And in the background of all of this has been an extraordinary rise in the price of agricultural land. Here's a brief summary: Beef Record cattle prices show little sign of falling sharply and retail demand will remain high, despite elevated prices. Export demand will remain strong. However, damage to the domestic grain crop could impact feedlot economics and ongoing high cattle prices for 2022 could make it more difficult for small processors to remain profitable.

Grain ON the grain front, global grains prices continue to climb, particularly with concerns over Russia's export quota. Russia has confirmed its intention to lower export volumes in early 2022 as food inflation continues in that country.

Rain across much of the grain producing areas, including the Southern Downs, has raised concerns over the harvest. Rain delays are expected to hit the harvest. High fertiliser prices continue to dampen the outlook for the coming season.

Sheep The global demand for sheep meat will remain strong and US demand for lamb stays high. High ewe prices indicate industry confidence and the spring flush has seen a fall in lamb prices.

High saleyard prices and a high Aussie dollar has impacted lamb exports to the US. IN the next six months, lamb exporters will be expecting a recovery from the decline in export volumes which has been down almost 10 percent over 2020. New Zealand exports to the US, on the other hand, have nearly doubled in recent months.

Wool Wool prices will continue to rise as supply tightens. The reduction of wool as a share of overall sheep production value makes oversupply less likely. Finer wool continues to enjoy price premium whilst record volumes of some wool types could dampen prices. Coarser wool prices will remain low.

Overall, the Australian wool market has been volatile over the last few years. The woold selling system is highly dependent on supply impacting price, which reverses shortly after. July to October 2021 saw record volumes of fine wool hit the market.

Dairy A strong increase in global prices is supporting increased returns to the farmgate across many of the nation's dairy farmers.

Good rain has supported a strong growing season and strong demand from China will prop up prices. Exports to China remain up 27 percent on this time last year. Domestic production is down as a result of a cold, wet spring but stronger production is predicted over summer. Competition for alternative uses for dairy farmland continues to impact supply.

Wine Australia produced a record harvest of 2.03 million tonnes in 2021 which may lead to an oversupply for the next year.

The 2021 vintage was 57 percent red grapes, resulting in the larges red wine production in 10 years.

Chardonnay remains the largest varietal in the crush, four times the size of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.

The opening of restaurants and pubs after COVID restrictions have boosted wine consumption, but consumption during lockdown was already 'healthy' at least from a sales perspective.

Australian wine exports are seeing strong growth in the UK and Hong Kong markets.

The boost in domestic tourism is increasing sales at wineries including on the Granite Belt.

The high Chinese tariffs and extended trade ban may not

see Australian wines enter that market for at least five years and the reduction in exports may lead to a domestic oversupply.

The supply chain issues experienced globally should see wine companies re-evaluate grape contracts.

Vegetables Lettuce, tomato, cucumber and zucchini crops were hit hard by rain, hail and strong winds with some growers reporting up to 70 percent of their crops suffering damage.

High labour costs are pushing the price of many vegetables, including tomatoes, to levels usually seen in drought years. Retail vegetable prices have increased by over 8 percent while fruit prices have actually fallen slightly.

COVID throws a wrench in freight As we go press, bare shelves that CEOs are quick to tell us are nothing to do with panic buying (other than maybe the toilet paper) but everything to do with supply chain staffing issues.

Not surprisingly, Queensland has removed the requirement for freight workers and truck drivers to provide a negative Covid19 PCR test to enter the state.

There is no longer any requirement for freight and truck drivers to provide a negative Covid-19 PCR test to enter Queensland.

Instead, there is a new F border pass for freight workers and truck drivers, which

will still need to be completed to cross the border.

Drivers must continue to monitor symptoms, and stay home if unwell, have tested positive, or have been deemed a close contact of a confirmed Covid-19 case.

If a driver develops symptoms while in Queensland, they must immediately undertake a COVID-19 test and not continue their journey until they have a negative result.

Changed requirements Freight and logistics operators are no longer required to: -show evidence of a negative COVID-19

result before entering Queensland.

-keep records of proximate contacts whilst on duty in Queensland.

-Retained requirements: -Freight and logistics operators must: -hold a valid F Pass (Freight and Logistics).

-be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

-immediately undertake a COVID-19 test (PCR or RAT) if you develop symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

-not continue the journey until a negative test result is received, or they have ended their isolation as permitted under a Queensland Public Health Direction.

-check in at all venues and document all interactions by registering applicable QR codes.

RAT tests for wool sheds It is hard to believe, but Rapid Antigen Tests are now key to the health of shearing sheds in Australia.

Avoiding COVID spread, particularly the rife Omicron variant, is key to the sustainability of the wool industry this year.

Shearing Contractors Association of Australia secretary Jason Letchford told Ag Trader that the association expected to receive just under 4000 tests this week, which would then be distributed to members.

He hopes to get everyone tested “as often as possible” which would be daily if supply were there. "This will allow members to progress on the basis that if we have a case it's limited to one or two people being tested in isolation before they join the team that day and they go home if they're positive and it allows the rest of the team to work on.

"Everyone is acutely aware that any loss of productivity now is really additionally devastating to not only contractors and workers, but also farmers and animal welfare issues."

The Shearing Contractors Association of Australia expected to receive further tests on January 12, Mr Letchford said. "We've communicated with members and we've been inundated with requests... there's not many people out there who are not trying to access the rapid antigen tests," he said.

Mr Letchford said while last year they had focused on encouraging as many wool shed workers to get vaccinated as possible, the association had now moved past that point.

"We've abandoned any additional efforts to convince those who at this point are not going to get vaccinated... it's not based on lack of information any more, people have made the decision," he said.

"We've certainly lost workers out of the industry in Victoria and we acknowledge that there's still a black market going on there... we'll leave it up to authorities to deal with that."

Peak bodies are concerned that market demand will mean rural people will have reduced access to RAT kits and will need to

pay much higher prices for them, similar to what rural GPs experienced early in the pandemic with PPE items.

Regional telehealth worry

Regional cancer patients will bear the brunt of the axing of vital Medicare rebates for phone calls with their specialists. The cuts come at a time when vulnerable patients must worry about suring COVID contamination at hospitals and clinics. The nation’s peak body of cancer specialists has expressed grave concerns about the potentially devasting consequences for some of Australia’s most vulnerable patients of the proposed changes to the Telehealth rebates. These changes will see funding for telephone appointments cut drastically. Private cancer specialists were given only 8 working days’ notice (over the Christmas and New Year period) about the changes to their patients’ access to subsidised phone call consultations, that start on January 01, 2022. A Medicare rebate (item number 91835) for phone calls will be scrapped along with a 50% loading (item number 112) for video consultations.for regional and rural patients.

Memories of Liz Marshall Liz Marshall was well known across the Southern Downs in almost three decades of work at Akooramak Care for Older Persons.

She was born at Warwick on January 19, 1949, one of two children of Lesley and Janet Stabler.

Liz went to school at PGC College. Her brother David went to primary school at Warwick West.

She competed in swimming at school and as a member of the Warwick Swimming Club and played netball and tennis.

After school, she did her nursing education at St Martins Brisbane hospital and the Warwick General Hospital.

Liz graduated as a RN Nurse in 1969 and then went on to train in Midwifery in Toowoomba for one year.

In 1972, she married Greymare farmer Don Marshall and they settled at Heather Brae, Rodgers Creek.

Their three children Dougall, Sarah and Scott were born in the Hanlon Ward of the Warwick Hospital between 1973 and 1976.

The children went to primary school at Wheatvale and Liz was heavily involved in the Wheatvale P and C. All three went to secondary school at Scots PGC College in Warwick.

She was a regular at functions at the Greymare Hall and was on the Town and Country Matron’s Ball Committee and

heavily involved in the Warwick Picnic Races.

Liz was a long-time supporter of the Warwick Rugby Union Club, especially from 1966 to 1976.

Soon after leaving school, she would be at Risdon Oval for Warwick rugby union home games when Don was in

the Warwick forwards. She and Don went to home games from 1966 to last year.

As a teenager, she played tennis at Wheatvale State School courts.

Liz started up swimming lessons for the

Combine surge November has been another outstanding one for the agricultural equipment market with tractor sales continuing to break records, supported by another huge month in the sale of Combine Harvesters.

Tractor sales across the nation enjoyed a strong rise of 21 per cent on the same month last year. This now sees the year-to-date (YTD) figure 28 per cent above last year with a running rate now approaching 18,000 tractors per annum.

Sales have been strong in all states, fuelled by the excellent harvest season underway and supported by the Government’s various company tax incentive programs. Queensland was again strong up 19 per cent now up 25 per cent YTD;NSW sales up 16 percent for the month and 43 percent ahead YTD.

Wheatvale students and organised tennis lessons for the Wheatvale district at Heather Brae on a Monday afternoon which were enjoyed by many.

In 1987, she returned to her nursing career when she started work at Akooramak.

She worked for 27 years at Akooramak, mainly working nights in the nursing home and helping out at night with hostel residents.

Liz retired from nursing in 2014 which allowed her to spend more time on the family beef properties at Rodgers Creek and Greymare.

She loved the chance to catch up with grandchildren Oliver, Sophie, Anna, Jock, Abbey, William, Harry, Elsie, Jack, Walter and Milly.

Liz and Don travelled to Longreach, Tamworth and Inverell to catch up with family members.

Don and the children often wondered how did she find the energy to do all the things she did?

“She was a teacher, nurse and counsellor,” her family said. “ To us, when we were kids, we saw her as a chauffeur, cook and friend.

“She found the time to be a playmate for her children, we just couldn’t comprehend how much she did,” they said.

“We see it now as love, Liz made you come whenever she’d call, her inexhaustible love was there for all to see.”

Liz passed away on October 10, 2021, after battling ill health for six years.

She will most be remembered as a keen member of her community and an absolute devoted wife and mother.

We had the best New Year present of all when we found our 800 kg Angus bull Boris who walked 10km from our Greymare property to the Cunningham Highway at Rodgers Creek.

Boris was purchased through our agent and was unloaded at our place on December 13.

We were selling cattle at the same time so needed all the yards so Boris was let into the house paddock.

He then headed almost 600m south west in one of our paddocks against the road.

I have a policy of leaving a new bull on hay in the yard for a week before letting him into a paddock but Boris was a quiet seven-year-old bull and I took the chance he would stay with a mob of 21 cows and heifers in the same paddock.

My view now is that he walked over the fence on to the road where a tree had fallen and flattened the fence.

He was initially heading south west but 18 days later, we found he had headed north east towards the highway.

I spoke to everyone within about 4km of home and drove the roads but no one had seen Boris.

Interesting at the same time, two landholders from Rodgers Creek were asking around to find an owner for a bull with a yellow ear tag, I81.

Tax-free apples?

Granite Belt apples destined for export will have better chances now in the UK. APAL has welcomed the Federal Government’s recent announcement that tariffs imposed on Australian apple and pear imports into the UK will be eliminated over the next three years.

“The announcement is promising for Australian apple and pear exporters.

While we await the details of the phasing, we can begin exploring the potential of exporting into a market that each year imports more than the entire Australian apple crop,” said APAL CEO Phil Turnbull.

“Capturing even a small portion of a market of this size and value would be significant – and we have the product to do it,” said Mr Turnbully. “We’ve always known there’s a niche opportunity in September and October – the final months before the northern hemisphere harvest begins, but Australian apples attract an 8 per cent tariff while apples from Chile and South Africa enjoy zero tariff.”

Madagascar on the Downs Looking for something fun to do this summer? The zoo is heaving with new residents including a zebra foal and a South African cheetah.

Last month, just in time for summer holidays, the Darling Downs Zoo welcomed five new lemurs to their zoo family (pictured).

Three Ring-tailed Lemurs are named Zola, Ven, and, of course, Julien after the famous King Julien from the animated film, Madagascar.

Their cousins, Black and White Ruffed Lemurs, are named Priscilla and Dahlia.

Bush Cricket: Greymare debuts first cricket team in 30 years

Greymare is fielding a team in the Warwick Australia Day Cricket Carnival for the first time since the 1990s.

There are 33 teams in the Warwick Cricket Association carnival in two grades, competitive and social.

Kieran Doherty, Damien Doherty, Dougall Marshall and Paul Cleary are the four players lining up on January 22-23 who also played almost three decades ago for Greymare.

Glen Mosch is one of seven players with a Greymare connection who will play in their first carnival for the team from Greymare and District, Jamie McDonald will play along with his wife Cr Cynthia McDonald and their son Ethan.

Wheatvale club bowler William Gross will play for Greymare after taking 4-10 in Warwick club cricket at Greymare Oval in the last club game before Christmas. It was the first Warwick club game at Greymare Oval in 5o years Down the years, Greymare cricket games were played on the concrete pitch and mats near the Greymare Hall pre and post the Second World War. Greymare played B and then A grade in the 1960s before winning an A-grade Warwick premiership In 19671968.
