With the help of some travellers, Ms Hibberd freed the kangaroo.
“Kangaroos when they are scared, can get a condition called stress myopathy, which when the animal is trapped, the blood pressure and heart can lead to essentially a heart attack," she said. "There was absolutely no way any animal could escape without us."

Worker shortage hits Southern Downs Council
Jonathan O’Neill oneill.jonathan1@outlook.com
Areport issued to the Ordinary Council Meeting of Southern Downs Regional Council on April 26 indicated that 21.3% of Council employees had exited the organisation, revealing a progressive increase at each reporting period.
Southern Downs Regional Council CEO, Dave Burges said that no trends are becoming evident to reveal the increased separation rates, but noted that the location of employee residences, lack of affordable housing in the Southern Downs and higher wages in the private sector are contributing.
“Of note lately, location seems to be a factor," he said. "Quite a number of our employees don’t
live in the Southern Downs, they live in Toowoomba, Ipswich and various places and travel arrangements can become quite onerous, particularly if they’ve got young families.
“We’re just finding that people are prepared to move, but remuneration and other things would be a factor as well. I have noticed a trend lately where location seems to be important too."
The CEO told Councillors at Wednesday’s meeting that developing a strategy to address this is on his task list within the next six months, and also voiced that he thought the separation rate was starting to trend downwards.
“I thought that was starting to trend downwards, but that’s certainly not the case with the latest stats,” Mr Burges said.
“I did have access to the annual workforce survey undertaken by the LGAQ… the data I
accessed a month ago was for the year to 30 June 2022, so it was a little bit out of date, but it did inform that for rural and remote councils, which we are one of, the separation rate is at 20% on average across the state.
“We are pretty much on that average… whilst it’s extremely challenging, it is endemic across the industry.
“SEQ are faring a lot better, they’re down to 10%, and they’re dragging the state average down, mainly because there’s such sheer numbers there.
“It is a problem state-wide. There’s a twenty percent turnover rate state-wide.”
Councillor Stephen Tancred spoke on the report, noting that his recent conversations with Councillors across the border in Tenterfield illustrate a similar scenario.
“There’s just so much going on
in private enterprise. Even though it’s not a good trend, it’s nice to know that we’re not Robertson Crusoe,” Cr Tancred said.
CEO Dave Burges reiterated that the turnover rate for local Councils is expected to improve nationally over the coming years, the upcoming 2032 Olympics present SEQ with a massive challenge and a brain drain.
“The 2032 Olympics are providing no short term improvement in SEQ and we’re being impacted by that,” Mr Burges said.
“Consultants and contractors will continue poaching our staff over the next 10 years, which is not a good outcome.”
Our newspapers have heard unconfirmed reports from previous Southern Downs Regional Council employees that a "toxic culture" within Council was the
reason for them resigning.
While these rumours have not been confirmed, if true, they do present a concerning reason for the tumbling staff attrition rates.
The reasons released by Council at the April 26 statutory meeting reflect the issues faced across the state by local Councils.
The decline in staff number is impacting on the workload of remaining employees, who are forced to take on the extra workload.
“If you have twenty percent of your staff turning over every year, that’s one fifth of 350, so it’s a lot of staff that aren’t in those seats,” Mr Burges said.
“You lose a lot of corporate knowledge and a lot of experience. There is a huge downside to it.
“It is a problem, and we just have to manage it as best we can.”
Enjoy a social get together and learn about a service often very misunderstood.

• Do I need to have a funeral and how much control do I have of what it will look like?
• Where will my loved one be between when they pass and the day of the funeral?

EVERYONE’S ENTITLED with Andrew Gale
Iwas According to a statement on research released by the Australian Road Safety Foundation last week, the friendly “thank you” wave between motorists is thought to be dying out. Apparently motorists are more and more reluctant to acknowledge other road users, even innocently, for fear that the wave may be mis-interpreted for more sinister hand signals. Thus, triggering roadrage responses.
Wow! How sad it is that we have come to that. However, are we really surprised?
The whole waving or not waving debate led me to wandering down a thought-path and reminded me of a few incidents in my life where waving had some strange outcomes.
Thankfully, out on the water, it is generally a lot more relaxed than travelling our roads. Having grown up and worked on and around the waterways of our east coast I’m used to waving at every boat that passes. It’s just what you do. In days of old ships would “dip’ insignia or utilise other forms of respectful signal to passing ships. Nowadays a radio call or a friendly wave is more in vogue.
I recall working in the Water Police in the 1990’s. Everyone waved to us, and vice versa. In fact it was that common that if someone didn’t wave it was so unusual it triggered alarm bells.
One time I was on patrol when we passed a small “tinny” with a couple of
guys in it. I waved and they just stared at us goggled-eyed and didn’t wave back. “What’s up with them”? I thought. I quickly wheeled the boat around and chased up next to them but they immediately bolted. They headed for the shoreline, parking the boat in the mangroves and jumping overboard.
Unfortunately for them the tide was out, and they quickly became stuck in the mud. We then had to go into rescue mode.
The reason they bolted. Inside the boat were two massive garbage bin liners packed with freshly harvested cannabis plants. These guys were so happy though to be extricated from the mud that they actually took us back to where they had been growing it on a nearby island to show up their clever growing setup. Complete with water collection system and a little swimming pool to store water in.
I bet they wish to this day, “If only we’d waved back!”
Another time I remember working with a new guy at Water Police. He had just transferred there from an outer Brisbane suburb he had worked at for a number of years and it showed. I won’t say where he was from, let’s just say it was a suburb where plenty of battlers lived and battles with the police were pretty regular events.
Anyhow, this day we were partnered up and were patrolling the river and bay in one of our boats. People were waving and I was waving back as I do, but after a bit I noticed my deckhand wasn’t getting into it. In fact, he was getting angrier and angrier every time someone passed and waved.
When I asked him what was up, he truly couldn’t believe that people were being friendly. I suppose that happens when you come from a place where people only wave at you with the back of their hand. With a finger extended.
I think that’s called conditioning.

The world has shrunk to the degree that there are relatively fewer flatearthers around. We’re moving so fast that we’d reach the edge of the earth before lunch if we’re not careful. But there are still some flat earthers around. Let me quote one of the more prominent, a Ultimate Fighting Championship chap called Bryce Mitchell, aka Thug Nasty, who putting aside the question of whether Thou Shalt Not Punch or not, has found Jesus, and declared “Hey y’all!!...if y’all don’t know by now, NASA is fraudulent. They're evil. That’s why their logo is the tongue of a snake. They make up lies like big bang and moon landings cause the elites don’t want you to worship God!” (Some spell checking, punctuation added by myself for clarity.) I’ve included the NASA logo, so that all those of you who have been punched in the head too many times can admire the tongue of the snake. NASA itself announced a couple of years back that it was resurrecting the “a bold, patriotic red chevron wing piercing a blue sphere” but what do you see now…a snake tongue or …what the hell is a chevron?)
know any actual flat earthers, but I do know a Moon Landing Was Faked person, and I have said to her, why don’t you fly…errhm…to Cape Canaveral. Land in Cape Canaveral and watch a rocket launch. What’s your thoughts now?
For the flat earthers, they didn’t have to travel to Cape Canaveral to have their world view challenged visually. Yes, there is no curvature to speak of even on a ten story cruise ship… but the navitgation of the ship works on the basis that the earth is spherical…and there’s no “reaching the edge of the planet” alarm in sight in the captain’s quarters. In fact if the earth was flat, only three satellites would be required for the ship to navigate a circle the size of the planet…but a ship’s GPS relies on 24 satellites, because…the satellites can’t ‘see’ outside their piece of the curve of the earth.
Unfortunately, despite all of us having access to satellite technology— regardless of whether you’re a Taliban or a tech true believer—in our hands these days, it seems we are flat out believing in anything except what we can see from the balcony of our flat, drinking a flat white...feeling flat...

"Exhilarating" Girraween
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
When Farmer David (McMahon) took one of his ladies from the farm, Lorelei, to Girraween National Park on a recent show for Farmer Wants a Wife, the footage of our Granite Belt outlook was spectacular, no doubt worth thousands in advertising revenue.
Over the long weekend inclusive of May 1, there were carloads of visitors seen with picnics to enjoy and backpacks to steady the way while taking on one of the treks. Here's what some of them relayed while sitting in company or securing their walking boots:
"Girraween, what a natural wonder," Jono from
Toowoomba said.
"I wish we had the time to do the Sphinx (walk) but we're going to run out of time to be able to get back home. We'll definitely plan an earlier start here," Cindy from Brisbane said.
"What a great spot. Can't believe we haven't been here before," Anna from Tenterfield said.
"Girraween is a great spot for families and hikers or bushwalkers of all ages. Today was nice weather and it wasn't too cold. It was really fun," Stephanie from Esk said, and her husband, Adrian added, "Girraween's exhilarating."
With the early morning fog on May 1, the walkers and visitors, not to mention locals, might have had a sleep in. The chill reportedly went to three degrees overnight for the change of month. Granite Belt winter, here we come.

The Rotary Club of Warwick held a luncheon on April 29 at the Kids Zone Pavilion at the Racecourse to celebrate 90 years of service to the community.
Thirty-six guests attended the function included Mayor of Southern Downs, Vic Pennisi, several Past District Governors of Rotary, Rotarians, former Rotarians and partners.
Held in very pleasant surroundings overlooking the beautiful racecourse, the guests were treated to excellent music from the Fern Brothers, and a delicious lunch prepared by club members.
The Master of Ceremonies was Past District Governor Ross Smith from the Burleigh Heads Rotary Club. He entertained the guests and led the proceedings in a very interesting and relaxed fashion.
The toast to the Rotary Club of Warwick was delivered by a Past President of the Stanthorpe Rotary Club, Stephen Tancred,
who brilliantly outlined the history of Rotary in Australia and in Warwick.
Past District Governor Neil Maxwell, a past president and the current secretary of the club, responded to the toast and outlined many of the activities of the club over the last 90 years particularly those which had benefited Warwick and its residents. The early building pro-
jects, community support events and youth activities the club has undertaken and supported were all covered in the address by Mr Maxwell.
The club is looking ahead to a bright future led this year by President Claudia Eather and next year by Joshua Jones and with support from community members the club is looking to strengthen its membership base
so it can continue to do good in the community both locally and internationally.
President Claudia Eather praised several attendees and thanked the Mayor.
"This is a great milestone to achieve for a small club with new members," she said. "Past President, Neil Maxwell and his wife Dell, put in a big effort to have the intimate celebration run smoothly.
"It was a pleasure to have Mayor Vic Pennisi attend and say a special word of thanks to all our past and present volunteers.
"We heard many stories from our past, and I’m very excited to see what stories we create for our future."

Funeral information evening
Taking the mystery out of death and funerals
Contributed
Have you ever wondered what exactly a funeral provider does when a person passes away?
Or what options are available to you when you die?
Have you thought about pre-planning and pre-paying for a funeral, but don’t know the first steps to take?
Warwick Funerals is hosting an information evening to answer these and any other questions you may have about this often misunderstood part of life.
You will learn about what happens when someone dies, from the transfer of the deceased from place of death, right through to the day of the funeral.
Funeral services vary greatly, depending on individual preferences. The many available
preferences will be discussed.
If you have any questions at all about this industry, come along and ask your questions. No question will be taboo or off limits. There is no such thing as a silly question.
Following these discussions, you are invited on a tour of the entire funeral home, to assist with breaking down any barriers or mystery surrounding what happens at a funeral home.
You can then join the funeral team for complimentary refreshments afterwards, where the opportunity will be available to ask the team any personal questions you didn’t want to ask at the public forum.
This educational, yet light hearted evening will commence at the Warwick Funerals Chapel, 48 Willi Street, Warwick on Wednesday 10th May at 5.30pm.
For catering purposes, please RSVP on 07 4667 8700 or email warwick@burstows.com.au
on the issues that best serve the community,” Councillor McDonald said.
“I first met Kempy during one of our region’s worst droughts. He worked tirelessly to assist the community at every opportunity, and he was involved in fundraising and distributing food and water to those in need," she added.
Mr Kemp is the President and Vice Chairman of the Warwick & District Road Safety Advisory Committee and is “one of Warwick’s leading road safety advocates".
Councillor McDonald noted his most significant achievement to be when Mr Kemp successfully lobbied for improvements to the Eight Mile Intersection, which resulted in 30 million worth of funding from the Federal Government.
“In the time I have known him, he has continually demonstrated to me that he is one of the most community-minded members I know and I’m proud of the constant effort he makes to assist our community," she said.
"Death trap" uncovered beyond the Downs
Continued from page 1...
However, when Ms Hibberd returned to the area a few days later, she came across a second cattle grid to find a dead kangaroo, which she believed to be the same animal she saved earlier in the week.
“It was literally a concrete tomb," she continued, “The newer versions of cattle grids are supposed to be open at the bottom to allow any animal to escape and prevent them from being trapped and dying.”
A spokesperson for Southern Downs Regional Council said they were aware
of Ms Hibberd’s concerns, but that they had “no plans to remove the cattle grids".
“The grids on Springdale Road form part of the wild dog exclusion fencing for the area," the spokesperson said, further adding that the grids were licensed and in good condition.
“Council is unaware of a solution for the existing grids on Springdale Rd that would effectively reduce wild dog movements yet prevent animal entrapment.”
Grids are not owned by council but have been reported to be effective against reducing wild dog movements. We will continue to track this story.
JOKE OF THE WEEK
The old magician was completely down on his luck – couldn’t even afford to buy a rabbit to pull out of his hat or even pay for one of those attractive leggy blonde assistants. He was working on the Titanic on that fateful voyage when the mighty ship sank. It was on the Titanic
that he had to make do with a parrot as an assistant, but to give credit to the parrot it had developed repartee and would squark to the audience: “It’s up his sleeve”, or “It’s under his cloak, folks.”
They were half way through their act when the Titanic hit the iceberg and sank.
The magician swam all night while the parrot fluttered overhead. He swam all next day and the parrot still fluttered overhead. It was evening of the second day when the parrot finally alighted on the magician’s head. “Okay, I give up. What have you done with the bloomin’ ship”

There was colour and merriment, as well as the utmost respect shown, when Fun
Over 50 Holidays came to the Granite Belt last week.
Calling their guests the "Funstars", the group were at the Amiens Legacy Centre on April 24 and then took part in April 25 commemorations before returning home.
"We embarked on a helping hand holiday to the Granite Belt region, to honour the legacy of fallen ANZAC heroes by sewing a field of poppies at the Amiens Legacy Centre," a spokesperson for the group said.
"The dual-purpose of the Poppy Project was to restore the field to its former glory to provide visitors to the region with a unique, and vibrant setting to pay their respects and create an opportunity to inject funds into
the local economy, for years to come.
"The money for the plants, soil preparation and irrigation system were donated to Amiens Legacy Centre from the Fun Over 50 Holidays Greenbank, a fund which exists on the generous donations of guests."
The travel entity "donated their comfort-plus Gold Class Coach for the occasion and Greenbank funds were also used to make a five-hundred-dollar contribution to the Amiens State School to build a vegetable garden".
"Funstars travelled from across Queensland for the project, with one individual even flying down from Townsville in North Queensland," the spokesperson said.
In November, Fun Over 50 Holidays will revive their renowned "Cherries, Berries Poppies and Wine" tour series to coincide with the summer harvest and Remembrance Day to see poppies in flower.

Retrofitting homes for cold weather
Green Gals
Contributed
As the winter months approach, many Southern Downs residents find themselves struggling to keep their homes warm and comfortable. Retrofitting your home for cold weather can not only make your living space more comfortable during the colder months but also reduce your energy bills and environmental impact.
Here are some tips on how to retrofit your house for cold weather:
Insulation
One of the most effective ways to keep your home warm in winter is to install insulation in your ceiling and walls. Different insulation products are given different R-Values, which measures how effective insulation is at reducing conductive heat loss or gain. In our region, the recommended R-value for ceilings is at least R4.1, and for walls it is at least R2.8. By installing insulation, you can reduce heat loss by up
to 50%, making your home more energy efficient and comfortable.
Windows
Windows are a significant source of heat loss in homes, particularly if they are single-glazed. Double-glazed windows have two panes of glass separated by a layer of air or gas. Retrofitting double-glazing is expensive, and it’s more likely to be used on new builds.
A cheaper option for reducing heat loss through windows is to install good-quality curtains or honeycomb blinds. Make sure to install a pelmet above the fittings, and that they fit well at the bottom of the window or floor, as cold air moves up and down along the window, rather than side to side. Another option that might suit some very cold rooms is to have corflute cut to the exact size of your internal window area and put it in the window frame each evening and remove it in the morning. The local print shops can cut corflute to size. It’s lightweight, easy to wipe down and has a double wall to help with insulation.
"Windows are a significant source of heat loss in homes:"
Green Gals
Draught proofing
Draughts can make your home feel colder than it actually is by letting cold air in and warm air out. Draught proofing involves sealing gaps around doors, windows, floorboards, vents, and pipes to reduce heat loss and improve insulation. You can light a stick of incense and move slowly around a room to detect draughts.
Heating systems
In our region wood fireplaces are commonly used for winter heating. They have a great atmosphere and warmth, but do cause air pollution both inside and outside the home. Wood smoke contributes to heart and lung problems as well as asthma. Operating wood heaters correctly to minimise smoke generation and using well-seasoned hardwood can reduce, but not eliminate the health risks.
Reverse-cycle air conditioners provide both heating and cooling, making them a versatile and
energy-efficient option. If you’re considering upgrading your heating system, look for models with high energy efficiency ratings to reduce your energy bills.
Retrofitting your home for cold weather can make a significant difference in reducing your
energy bills and improving your comfort during the colder months. By taking these simple measures, you can make your home more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly while staying warm and comfortable all winter long.
Green tick for locals

On May 6 in Warwick's Queens Park, the grand opening of the Farmers Market expansion will debut following council approval, boosting the stall capacity past 40 stalls, which will potentially “attracted thousands to “put a focus on buying local".
An emphasis has been placed on “Warwick produce for Warwick resi-
dents” in order to reduce food miles and encourage locals to buy local, according to the Courier Mail.
Lisa Hansford, contributor for the Warwick Farmers Market, said they "were extremely excited for the 'relaunch'".
“Since starting eight months ago, we’re really keen to put the call out there and bring even more stalls with high quality fresh produce for all to enjoy,” Ms Hansford said.
“If you spend fifty dollars at a local business, it’s far more likely that that fifty dollars will stay in your community rather than a supermarket CEOs pocket, and

Nobody can deny the heart with which this team plays. They keep stepping up and have exceeded all expectations in season 2023.
While talking about teams showing heart, full credit has to go to the Wests Tigers, who scored their first win of the year by knocking off the defending premiers Penrith.
Conditions were horrendous in Bathurst as the rain continued to tumble, but they dug deep to cause without a doubt the biggest upset of the year to date. It's the reward for a few good weeks of play they've put together in recent times, obviously without the results going their way.
They now get a golden shot to make it two wins on the bounce when they come up against the St George Illawarra Dragons, who have lost their past four games and were very disappointing in going down to the Bulldogs at the weekend. This weekend sees the rugby league world turn its attention to Brisbane for the annual Magic Round, with all eight competition games to be played at Suncorp Stadium.
One of the big talking points is how the surface will hold up after how it looked during the Broncos and Rabbitohs fixture last Friday, but here's hoping it stays the course for a great weekend of action.
Saturday looks to be the pick of the days, where you would assume a large portion of the crowd will be cheering on the Dolphins to take down the Sharks. That's followed by the clear game of the round, as two premiership contenders in the Melbourne Storm and South Sydney Rabbitohs go head to head for the second time this season.

After the previous round, who would've thought it would be up to the Gold Coast Titans to fly the flag for the Queensland teams in the NRL? They did just that on Saturday in scrappy conditions, outgunning Manly and finally putting two decent halves of football together following their capitulation against the Dolphins.
Speaking of the Dolphins, they were most unlucky not to add another win to their tally after going down in golden point to the Canberra Raiders. Again they showed plenty of fight to come from behind and level the scores with the Raiders in Wagga, and ultimately had their shot to win the game in the closing stages, only to go down by the barest of margins.

STORM - BYE
2023 ROUND 10 - OVERVIEW
2023 Footy Tipping Competition!
Autumn has always been my favourite time of year in Australia.
The foggy, cold mornings are perfect for hearty breakfasts and numerous cuppas while tucked under a blanket and the brilliantly sunshiny days are just right for harvesting chillies, leeks, and herbs to turn into scrumptious things in my kitchen.
For twelve years Bear and I
would work side-by-side chopping apples for cider, dicing onions for caramelised onion jam, and washing pears for our favourite pear and ginger jam.
I work alone now, but I carry those beautiful memories with me and they make me smile as I continue our traditions and share our concoctions with the people we love.
This week I'm infusing vinegar and oils with spices and herbs to give the winter sauces
The Long Paddock with
Gerard Walsh
If you want to plant some trees around a house or on a driveway, get in and do it. Don’t wait around, I waited around for 40 years and now the new trees are less than a metre high.
Early on, the trees were short of water but we did put a poly pipe to two trees on the hill on our driveway so we can water them now when needed.
The past two years have been pretty good from a weather perspective, we even got 4.4mm on Saturday night.
I saw someone ploughing on Sunday morning and thought it might have been a bit more rain but that is enough to make a better job of cultivation.
I can’t really remember what our house paddock was like when I got John Loy Snr in with his dozer to clear it for cultivation. Perhaps I could have asked him to leave a few more trees.
I do know my mother saved one tree near the house, John was asked to clear the Windmill Paddock but when Mum saw the biggest tree in the paddock was down for demolition, she got me to stop the dozer man.
To this day, that tree has a few dead limbs from when it was ripped before I said to leave it.
Mum’s idea to leave it was a good one as the cattle often use it for shade.
The only downside is that every tree that is left in a cultiva-
and marinades I make an even greater depth of flavour and fragrance.
Chipotle vinegar is ideal for adding to slow-cooked meats to make them extra tender, tarragon oil is lovely drizzled over pan-fried fish, and garlic oil is good with nearly everything.
I also like to use the infused vinegar to make quick fridge pickles with extra root veggies like carrots, beetroot, and rad-
ishes or to add a delectable kick to pickled cherries or a fruit-filled chutney. And, frankly, I like them because they’re beautiful. It gives me a happy little thrill to see glistening glass bottles of deliciousness lined up on my pantry shelves, filled with fresh herbs, colourful peppers, and whole spices.
tion paddock takes some moisture from the crop.
At present, we are not doing any cultivation due to the number of marsupials in the area.
The option is to put up some exclusion fencing or an electric fence so the cultivation is just for the cattle and sheep.
As for planting trees near the end of the drought, we planted seven and five survived.
A couple of times, they nearly died.
We also put some netting around the trees, we have some Friesian dairy steers and they are particularly good at eating the trees.
So if you are wanting to plant some trees, do it in a wet season like this one as it will take a while to get them established and useful for shade.
None of ours after three years are any good yet to shade a car or even a buggy.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup fresh or dried chipotle peppers
2 cups vinegar
Directions: Combine all ingredients in a sterilised glass bottle, seal, and set in a dark, cool place for 1-2 weeks until it reaches the flavour you like. Strain and use.

The Warwick Gardens Galore Redbacks took on the South Toowoomba Bombers in their round 2 AFL match at WCU Oval on Saturday April 29 and continued their winning start to 2023 with a comfortable 10.11.71 - 7.8.50 victory.

The Bombers came out flying in the third quarter blasting four goals to three and threatening to take the game from the home side.
Robert Blood kicked two goals and Sam Platz chipped in with one of his own to keep the Redbacks on top heading into the last quarter, 11 points in front.
Will Jamieson found plenty of footy and used his speed to get out of trouble and debutant Alex Dwan was very handy, taking a few strong marks, spoils and nail-

The last quarter, possession was dominated by the Reddies however the conversion inside 50 was of concern kicking two goals, five behinds, for the quarter.
Samson Lowney started the Ferrari in the last quarter, finding plenty of the ball and kicked a

Women's golf in Warwick

Firstly this week we need to congratulate our Women’s Pennants team, comprising of Majella Kahler, Anne Lyons, Roslyn Darton, Melanie McLennen and Jill Barnes. This mighty team defeated Oakey at Cabarlah last week, bringing us home, six very valuable points. We are now sitting on 12-and-a-half points, ahead of City and Pittsworth who are both on 7. Cabarlah are yet to play their second game, so things could change this month when we play at City.
Thank you to Club Warwick RSL for sponsoring our Women’s mid-week medal again this month. This is a much sought after win, as winners qualify for the Medal of Medallists in December. So Wednesday April 26, we played this great event. It was all the “Anne’s” in the winning circle. With Anne Lyons playing under her handicap, taking out Division 1 with a great 70 nett, & Anne Tomkins playing a great game to win Division 2 with 74nett.
Runner up for Div 1 was Majella Anne, and Runner up for Div 2 was Roslyn Ann. So there ends our bit of trivia for the week.
So the rest of Division 1 faired as follows- Anne 70, Majella 76, Marg Adcock 77 CB, Annice Payne 77 CB, Janine Stewart 77, Kath Devereux 78, Narelle Norris
81, Jill Barnes 83, Judy Lester 85. Narelle taking out the Division 1 putting, with 30 putts.
Division 2 scored as followsAnn 74 CB, Roslyn Darton 74, Trish Bell 76, Tub Ingall 77, Carole Brandon 79, Maria Carey
81, Vicki Bennett 82 CB, Lyn McKillop 82, Dianne Evans 85,

Another excellent attendance last Sunday April 30 for our competition. The weather was good with a fine sunny morning and as usual the wind had to be watched carefully if a good score was to be recorded. In the open class Kevin Birsh put down an impressive total, just one point away from maximum score, with Mark Paroz hard on his heels in second place. The standard class was once again led by John Cooke with Kevin Jones runner up. The sporter/ hunter class was well supported this week, Nick Kent having a successful morning , recording a score just one point from maximum, Gary Snelling not far behind in second place. Next Sunday 7th May we will be at the 300 yard mound sign on at 8.30am for 9am start, contact Margaret on 4666 1018 for details if required.

Saturday April 29, Jill Barnes found her true form again, winning The Cherry Tree Coffee and Dining Voucher with a great 39 points. That one will hurtle you up the Shoot Out board Jill. Runner

This week also saw the Final Contenders of The Lane Cup finalised. Charlie and Kath Morrison defeated Daniele Seibel and Slim Eldridge in a great match. Daniele and Slim were 5 down on the turn, yet scrambled back in great style, to only go down 2/1.
The 2nd semi final match was won by Di Johnstone and Wayne Wells, they defeated Shane & Molly Scotney. So bring on the Finals!
On Wednesday May 3 we will be playing a Single Stableford off the red markers sponsored by our long time Sponsor Red Rooster. Thank you to Neil and Samantha, your support from all avenues are so very much appreciated.
Saturday May 6 will be The Birdie Bistro and Bar Monthly Medal. Played off the white markers, and in two divisions, with the winners from both divisions qualify for Medal of Medallist held later in December.
Sunday will be the final of The Lane Cup. This should be a great match, so we will wait eagerly to hear the results.

Seventeen-year-old Stanthorpe
hooker David Williams has scored two tries in his side’s 12-8 win against Texas in the Border Rugby League at Stanthorpe on April 29.
Men’s coach and club president Roger O’Brien has paid tribute to Collegians, Texas and Stanthorpe clubs for putting on a gala day of rugby league at Sullivan
Oval.
“We had 14 games on what was a very successful day, Collegians and Stanthorpe have teams in every junior grade which not many clubs have,” he said.
In the men’s game, Jake Burnell landed two goals to give the Stanthorpe Gremlins 12 points.
O’Brien said prop Brendan Perkins also had a good game while winger Hamish Hamilton, 20, is showing plenty of promise in his first season of rugby league.
“He hasn’t scored a try yet but will,” O’Brien said.
Stanthorpe led 6-0 early, then 12-4 before Texas scored a try with two minutes to go.
In ladies league tag, Texas won 20-16 with Brooklyn Favero the players’ player for Stanthorpe.
O’Brien said numbers were good for both the men and ladies’ teams.
There is a bye in senior footy this weekend so players can head to Suncorp Stadium to watch some of the Magic Round footy.

On a very windy post ANZAC Day game, 59 players braved the conditions with Peter Farrell coming out on top with a very impressive 42 points.
Coming in second with 37 points the "unluckiest golfer" in the Club
Garry Adcock could only rue Peter's timing to put in his best game for some time.
Balls in the run down went the way of Kel Lucasd 36, together on 35 points Ian Skillen, Ron Simon and Phil Economidis, on 34 points James Bradshaw, Troy Alsford and Bruce Howells.
Finishing things off with a count back on 33points were Laurie King, Clive Pulley and Greg Wallace
The Pro Pin 13th had Danny Lyons take the major prize with Ross Bell in second spot and Garry Adcock third.
Nearest the pins were 5th Jesse Ollerton, 7th Garry Adcock, 9th Craig Burgess, 11th Kris McLennan 16th Wayne Watt.
After a recent hip operation Mick Payne has run into a few problems and we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back playing sooner rather than later

& Suburbs make it two wins
Gerard Walsh sports@thedailyjournal.ink
The Eastern Suburbs ladies have two wins from three games after beating Inglewood in Warwick on Saturday afternoon, April 29.
After a first round loss to Tenterfield, Suburbs has beaten Macintyre and Inglewood.
It was the first defeat of the season for Inglewood in ladies league tag.
Suburbs led 12-10 before scoring a late try for a 16-10 win.
In the men’s rugby league game, Inglewood scored a try three minutes from fulltime to win 24-20.
After regathering the ball from a short kickoff, Suburbs had a chance to score but couldn’t get the ball over the line to record a last-minute win or draw.
Suburbs took the early lead with a try from Aaron Hinch before Inglewood
fought back in the middle of the first half and led 14-12 at halftime.
Hinch scored two tries, Tyson Trahair and Kai Etherington one each and Matt Marshall landed two goals for Suburbs.
Captain coach Marshall said his side invited Inglewood back in the game with a lot of penalties and dropped balls.
“We conceded too many points midway through the first half,” Marshall said.
“Once we get our discipline and ball control right, we will do well, we have proven we can match it with the top teams.”
As for best players, Hinch won the Suburbs best player award for the second time this season.
Marshall was high in praise of his forward pack who gave away a weight advantage to Inglewood but kept going all day.
Halfback Brent Osborne led the Inglewood side well and scored one try from 10 metres out.
“Brent got them going and they rolled on from there,” Marshall said.
It’s a must win according to Burns

After a weekend break, the ‘Stillwater Pastoral Company’
Wattles Warriors top grade team are fully focused on returning to the winner’s podium after their local derby clash with neighbouring TRL club the Pittsworth Danes at Platz Oval on Saturday, April 29.
The Warriors have just a single fixture success from three outings since the season got underway, a second round win over Southern Suburbs and losses against the Dalby Diehards and Warwick Cowboys.
Coach Travis Burns isn’t taking the Danes lightly, nor should he with them perched above his Warriors on the Hutchinson Builders A Grade premiership ladder.
Pittsworth are coming off a healthy 30 – 16 last start win over the Oakey Bears, and will have a spring in their step as they run on to Platz Oval.
Wattles have struggled to take the field with their top line-up this season, however bustling top draw back-rower Brendon McBryde will don his boots on Saturday for the first time in the new season.
Former Brisbane Broncos aligned McBryde last ran on in
green & gold in last year’s season decider, and his re-emergence will add plenty of polish to a forward pack that already commands respect.
On the down side, concerns rise over representative threequarter Austin Jennings fitness to take on the Danes.
The lightning-fast Jennings, TRL top try scorer last season, was seen to grasp his hamstring after effecting a tackle against the Warwick Cowboys.
He left the field and is in serious doubt to be among the Wattles ‘17’ this Saturday.
Form reserve grade threequarter Tim Hentschel steps in for top grade vice-captain Nick Van Der Poel who is an absentee.
Hentschel, the top TRL reserve grade try scorer hasn’t run on in premier grade since Wattles 2014 premiership win, the Warriors Mr Resilience actually making his A grade debut back in 2004.
Burns considers a win on Saturday as vital with key matches against TRL high rollers the Gatton Hawks, Goondiwindi Boars and Valleys Roosters on the horizon lined up after this weekend.
“We need to consolidate and commit” according to Burns, “The Dalby and Warwick games were tough challenges, but we could have and should have won.”
“Pittsworth will be looking at the immediate season in the same light, which will add to this Saturday’s intensity.”
The coach is impressed with the continuing development of his halves, five eight Tom Morris and halfback Brayden Paix.
“It’s all quite new for them, a new combination bearing significant responsibility, but they are proving an excellent bond between our forwards and backs.
It’s building confidence in a team that is going through a significant rebuild.”
Tony Morris Tiling Reserve Grade
Balanced at the head of the TRL Clive Berghofer Land Sales reserve grade ladder, Wattles undefeated reserve graders can be considered a healthy bet to continue on their winning way against Pittsworth.
The Dane’s have a single win
from their three games, their most recent outing where they walloped Oakey 40 – 14 at Club Pittsworth.
Coach Tony Morris has stepped off to an impressive start in his coaching career, with an undefeated record after the pre-season and three TRL rounds.
Aside from team captain Jordan Henry who is an injury uncertainty and Tim Henschel rising to A grade, proven forward pack performers Will Manley and Garth Lonergan will be absent for personal reasons, but Morris’ line-up will still be a formidable force for the Danes clash in front of a home crowd.
Black Toyota, Warwick Under 19
After a tough night against the Dalby Diehards back in Round 1, the Cameron Hamblin
coached Wattles colts have been on winner’s street for their last two outings.
Given the team comparisons against the Danes, the Warriors will start favourites and hopefully continue their success.
Team mentor Cameron Hamblin isn’t coming in to any suggestion of the result being in the bag though, “the team has a great opportunity to cement another win but Pittsworth won’t be giving anything away as always. We will need to be committed and willing to earn it.”
The Warriors are hoping to have their best line-up on the paddock against the Danes, something they have yet to accomplish.
Hamblin is impressed with his talent and ability across the park, “more games together as a team that boasts a number of new faces will bring benefits.”
