Stanthorpe swim-

mer Ben

Armbruster has set a new Australian Allcomers Record in the 50m butterfly at the Australian Swimming Championships at the Gold Coast. He was fastest qualifier in the Monday morning

heat after swimming beside Olympic gold medallist

Kyle Chalmers and then won the final on Monday night.

Ben is improving dramatically under coach

Chris Mooney at the Bond University club where he is also studying parttime.

He went into the championships ranked number four and took .2 of a second off his time in his heat swim and then swam 23.05

for a clear win in the final.

Ben broke the allcomers record of Geoff Huegill.

The 50m butterfly was the first of five events on his program at the nationals, he is also in the 100m butterfly, 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

He also won the junior 50m butterfly on Monday night.

Ben will now contest the world championship trials

in Melbourne mid year where he has a chance to secure a top-two finish in the 100m butterfly to secure an individual swim in the championships.

While there is a 50m freestyle at the worlds, they don’t have 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke. Australia will also be selecting a relay team so a strong performance in the 100m freestyle will boost Ben’s selection chances.

Ben on top of the world with new record ANZAC significance is more than a day

April 25 is Australia’s national day to recognise all military personnel who have served our nation over more than a century.

Next Tuesday, Australians will commemorate the 108th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings on a local, national and international scale.

Secretary of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), Alison Frame said there's more reason than ever to remember the significance of April 25.

“With COVID-19 restrictions now lifted, I expect many more Australians will be planning to attend public services this

Anzac Day,” Ms Frame said.

“I encourage everyone to check online for local services being organised by the RSL and other community groups. Some of the most poignant Anzac Day events are

held at Australian War Cemeteries and Gardens of Remembrance.

“If you are planning to travel overseas, there is still time to register for the Dawn Services at Gallipoli in Türkiye and VillersBretonneux in France.”

For those planning a commemoration, or gathering at home, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs has designed "a digital Kitbag" of 10 printable and adaptable factsheets to assist.

To access these go to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Anzac Portal at https://anzacportal. dva.gov.au/resources/anzac-day-kitbag

As is customary, the ABC News Channel, and other media, will broad-

cast the Dawn Service at Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux, which will also be available on the DVA Facebook page. Deborah Wheeler at the most recent showing of her award-winning documentary, inside.

Not Necessarily the News

Here we go again

For something different, we have more reports on emails and text messages prompting recipients to "click" and consider whatever they are selling, or not.

It's such a time waster! What might flag your interest amid the time wasting is that an estimated 3 billion was lost to Scammers in Australia last year alone.

A legitimate email last week warned that an email from the "Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) or another government agency" would, more than likely, be a scam.

"Scammers are targeting people who speak Mandarin by pretending to represent a government agency," the advice read. "Some calls give an English language option.

The caller will claim there has been illegal activity involving the recipient’s phone number and threaten to disconnect the service. These callers might also mention genuine ACMA phone numbers and website addresses to appear legitimate.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up."

Good advice. And note to scammers about my email, NAB don't email and they don't space out the acronym (see here). Learn more about how to protect yourself and your family from phone scams on the ACMA website and make a report to Scamwatch.

If you’re concerned that your identity has been compromised or you’ve been a victim of a scam, contact your bank immediately and call IDCARE on 1800 595 160. (SV)

Staff Reports with the Rotary Club of Warwick

The Rotary Club of Warwick said they are "proud to announce" their 90th Anniversary Celebration luncheon, to be held on 29 April 2023 at the Kidszone Australia Pavilion at the Warwick Turf Club on Victoria Street.

This milestone event "will celebrate the Rotary Club's long history of service to the local community and beyond".

"We are thrilled to be celebrating our 90th anniversary," said Rotarian of 50 years and secretary of the Rotary Club of Warwick, Neil Maxwell.

I wasn't his mum...but his spelling and language was pretty persuasive. I wrote back and called him 'son'. Maybe I got the gender wrong, because after a couple of texts, they stopped...)

Red sky

"A red sky at night is a shepherd’s delight! A red sky in the morning is a shepherd’s warning”. Apparently it is true, at least in Australia’s southern states. Red sunsets, mean that there is more likely to be a high pressure system in the west, from whence cometh most of our weather. South west if I remember rightly from my Glen Aplin days. If there is a red sky in the morning (i.e. in the east, it means that the high pressure system is likely to be in the east, pulling what is likely to be a low pressure system eastward, our way…. I’m telling you this because, despite a life time of saying the words, I’d never understood what they mean until now.

I’m glad the Mayor understands the rate system. He and his council have just given a valuation rise for at least three houses in Percy St of 33% which is a rate rise equal to $11.73

per house per week. Your excessive rates are greater than a large block on the banks of the Brisbane River at Kenmore. It must make you proud.

The long awaited reconstruction of the Cunninghams Gap section of the Cunningham Highway began this week, earlier than our newspaper had previously reported.

As a result of the reconstruction, the roadway is closed in part from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, from now.

Member for the Southern Downs, James Lister told our newspapers that the reconstruction is highly needed.

“I understand that the department has been consulting with the Queensland Trucking Association and others regarding the best way to press on with those particular road-

works involving -on-off opening of the road and perhaps closure at certain times of the day that is notified,” Mr Lister said in parliament recently.

“That is probably the best way for the community to adapt to the issue.

“I acknowledge the federal and state governments for funding the works that will be going on at Cunninghams Gap, particularly the stabilisation of the rock face that overhangs that particular road by about one hundred metres… we certainly do not want to see a landslip there that could kill people or the road for months or years."

One of our journalists is driving through Cunninghams Gap as we go to print for this edition and our Friday papers will report on what was experienced.

Allow more time through The Gap Queenslanders commemorate

For commemorations this ANZAC Day, the RSL Queensland prompts Queenslanders to "to recognise service people, past and present, across the country".

ANZAC Day marks the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in 1915 and is a day to commemorate the contribution of the 1.5 million service personnel who have served our country in all conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations.

RSL Queensland State President Major General Stephen Day DSC AM acknowledged the importance of all Queenslanders supporting, recognising, and participating in ANZAC Day.

“ANZAC Day is a day where we remember and commemorate all of those who have sacrificed so much to secure the freedoms and way of life that we, as Australians, are so privileged to have,” Major General Stephen Day said.

“There’s no greater way to honour the selfless contribution of our past and present service personnel than by participating in your local ANZAC Day commemorations and keeping the spirit of our ANZACs alive.

“Not only is this a profoundly meaningful time to remember those who fell at Gallipoli, ANZAC Day is an important date to commemorate all those who have served in a range of modern conflicts and peacekeeping operations at home and abroad.

“It is also an important occasion to acknowledge the contribution of Defence families and those who have played a pivotal role in supporting veterans both during and after service.”

RSL Queensland is working with its vast network of more than 230 Sub Branches which will be hosting more than 400 services this year for all Queenslanders to pay their respects and honour the service and sacrifice of veterans.

EVERYONE’S ENTITLED with Andrew Gale

Like many old footballers, the stories I tell about my time on the field get better year on year, so I’ll warn everyone from here on in, take anything I say about football that portrays me in a good light with a grain of salt.

I did play all sorts of football from an early age - soccer, rugby league and finally rugby union. It dominated the colder months my year from perhaps when I was six or seven years old, right up into my late 30s. My coaches mostly hated me. I was a very poor trainer, hated anything involving running but loved whinging, fighting and beer drinking.

In the end, I retired from rugby as a broken, bent and bruised front rower. Considering I started playing as a skinny, nimble soccer winger and emerged after 30 years as a 125kg prop. It certainly was a varied journey.

I learned a lot of life lessons from playing football. Being part of a team. Not letting your mates down as well as the importance of committing to the entire 80 minutes of a game and to an entire season. Probably the biggest lesson I learnt however was to remember the state of the game and always take a look at the scoreboard, literally and figuratively. I mean, after all, everyone plays to win. Well, at least sometimes anyway.

Sure, I did play for other reasons -

fitness, camaraderie and of course, the love of the game. Being successful at it was a definite motivator though and a big bonus when it happened.

I had football seasons where we ended up on top and others where we ended up on the bottom. Games where we won by 50 and others that we lost by the same. Even one terrible season where that seemed to happen to us week in and week out. Yeah, that got tough.

It really is the same with life. It gets to be a terribly hard slog living your life if you “lose” at what you are doing all the time, get kicked from one end of the park to the other and only have pain and bruises to show for all your efforts.

It’s times like those you need to take the small victories where you can get them. The fact that you may have been flogged by 10 tries but you still pinched a couple of lineout throws or won a scrum against the feed. Anything. Those small victories can help carry you through to the next big one.

It’s the big stuff we all want though. The wins, particularly that last game of the year.

I remember the dying minutes of a big game once. We were down by more points than even the Harlem Globe Trotters could come back from. Another season down the tube. Right in the shadows of full time I put a tackle on my opposite number and he went down and stayed down. I felt about 10 feet tall.

Then I made the mistake of making a big-mouth comment to him and his teammates. The obvious reply came back. “Look at the scoreboard.” That brought me back down to size. And some.

Idon’t want to defame anybody but… OK, that’s a risky way to begin a screed if there ever was one. It’s a little like “I don’t want to be racist but”, an early warning that one is about to be racist, but… I’m sure the newspaper owners will be happy to hear I won’t be mentioning names, and the beginning of this piece relates to events far from home… One of the great joys, as I’ve mentioned before, of working in Bangladesh is that it reminds me over and over again how wonderful things are in Australia.

If you think you have a ‘rotten government’ and they are ‘all corrupt’, you really ain’t seen nothing yet. Let me tell you a story that is true, but I’ve changed the names etc on the very small chance that this will be read in a country far far away…

We’re struggling with a dispute with a local bloke, in that country far far away, in relation to the ownership of a piece of land we’ve been running a school on for nearly two decades. The gent’s MOTHER donated the land to us, way back then, and duly passed away…and we deeded the land to the government, because we aren’t in the business of accumulating real estate, but of educating youngsters who otherwise would remain illiterate.

Anyway, this gent has no claim to this land, and hasn’t been interested in claiming the land anyway…until the World Bank built a four storey cyclone shelter on the land, a gleaming (by local standards) concrete edifice

designed if a tsunami like 1970 were to come again. Remember this is a part of the world where around 500,000 people died one dark and stormy night back then. Anyway, this cyclone shelter had room for our school, and so we agreed to let the World Bank build…and then greed set in.

The local gent suddenly experienced an affinity with his traditional land…and used a minor flaw in the land deed to the land to launch his claim… It’s hard to simplify a court case, but this one is simple: there is one fact slightly in HIS favour, and there are 50 facts smack bang in favour of us. With that one fact he launched legal action, backed by a few brown paper parcels with the local court, and anyway, it came to a head… A local official, duly ‘encouraged’ by one of the said brown paper bags lodged a document with the court which was full to the brim with perjury. I began organising an appeal etc based on the facts and the clear perjury…when I was suddenly informed that I’d missed a crucial point. The local official was not just a land office employee…but he was the assistant magistrate in the case. In other words, ladies and gentleman, we had a rare case of the court lying to itself.

I rest my case. We live in paradise.

Southern Downs locals remember RAAF Trauma Nurse to speak at War Graves service

Trauma nurse and mother of two, RAAF Squadron Leader Koryn Roberts will be the guest speaker at the Warwick War Graves' ANZAC Day service at 8.30am.

Koz, as she prefers to be called, a regular visitor to Warwick's RSL Sub-Branch, works with them to fund more palliative care "cuddle beds" for hospitals throughout the district.

The "Cuddle Beds Project" came about when she met Flight Lieutenant Belinda McGowan at the Wagga Health Centre. Belinda, who was married to Warwick local Bruce McGowan, was at the time, diagnosed with asbestosis and Koz became her Health Liaison Officer.

Belinda had come into contact with asbestos in East Timor

when she and her squad were renovating a building to be used for the RAAF there.

The firm friends were both later transferred to Amberley RAAF base where Belinda could be closer to family in her last days.

It was also in Warwick where Belinda became aware of the need for cuddle beds where family members can lie beside their dying parent or partner to comfort them in their remaining time.

Growing up in Canberra, Koz said military service was not something discussed at home but she always wanted to serve.

“I wasn’t really aware of how to do this so put the idea to rest,” she said. “My grandfather had served in the RAAF and he suggested I joined as I appeared to be ‘the right fit’.

“I met my future husband, Adam, when I was sixteen, just before I started nursing training

at University. His father was a serving RAAF member so after graduating as a nurse, aged twenty-one, I joined.

“While I don’t agree with violence and war, it will occur, and as I nurse in the military, I aim to reduce the suffering and death of those fighting to protect our Nation and our Allies.”

In her career to date, Koz has served at Williamtown, Tindal in the Northern Territory, Richmond, Wagga Wagga and Amberley. She has been deployed to Samoa, the Middle East region and Afghanistan.

“I have travelled all over the world retrieving injured and ill service personnel and aero medically returned them to Australia,” Roz said.

“I have a passion for trauma nursing, which has driven me back to University on a few occasions, and it’s something I will continue with while ever I can.”

Yes and No Vote gathers momentum

As most school children began Term 2 on the Southern Downs last Monday April 18, aligning with their Queensland counterparts, former Liberal MP Pat Farmer set out to run an estimated 14,000kms in support of the "Yes Vote" of The Voice to Parliament.

A media cross to Hobart with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese heard from the national leader and the enthusiastic runner who offered gratitude.

“I want to say thank you to our Prime Minister for giving us ordinary Australians a chance to have a say in the Referendum,” Mr Farmer said. “We are honoured and lucky to live in a country to have a say in something as significant as this.”

Mr Farmer, who is famous for running from the North to South pole, credited his wife and children, Dylan and Brooke, saying it was his daughter’s idea for the run to potentially highlight the positive “Yes Vote” of the impending Referendum, flagged for some time from October to December.

“Brooke said, ‘Why don’t you do a run for the Voice?’,” Mr Farmer said. “(And) for every person under the age of thirty, it’s a no-brainer. They can’t understand why we are having a Referendum in the first place. It’s up to us to show our maturity and to learn from our kids.”

Mr Farmer further quoted his father who offered advice that, “The most precious commodity on this

earth is time” and then thanked the “dignitaries” who were present on Monday to see the race begin, as he was flanked not only by media but others, of all ages, running as well.

The start of the race coincided with the launch of advertising in support of the “No Vote". Campaigners for that stance were saying to media that they “can’t attract the ‘Star Power’” of the “Yes Vote” and they are presenting “the everyday indigenous Australians who don’t agree”.

There is confusion about what the “No Vote” stands for, some saying that their “No Vote” stance doesn’t necessarily oppose the “Yes Vote”, mores that the "Don't Know, Vote No" campaign is opposed to some of the wording to be put forward.

Moving indoors to further speak to media last Monday, Prime Minister Albanese said he “couldn’t run eighty kilometres a day” but is hopeful that “politicians can get out there and promote the work of the people in the community who will come up with their own way of supporting The Voice and Reconciliation”.

“Each of us, in our own way, have an opportunity to make a difference,” the PM continued. “When we wake, the morning after the Referendum, there is only two options, yes or no. A Yes Vote will mean we are more forward-thinking as a nation.

“As Pat (Farmer) said, this is over to the Australian people. This isn’t determined by politicians. Running fourteen thousand kilometres is inspirational and is matched by the people in 2017 who issued the

Uluru Statement of the Heart.

“I am confident and hopeful that Australians will take up that gracious invitation.”

Prime Minister Albanese announced the proposed Referendum question on 23 March 2023, as: “A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?”

Mr Farmer will finish his run in Uluru in November, media reports have said.

Taking to the streets of the Southern Downs, our newspapers tracked the following when asked what people thought of Mr Farmer raising awareness in this way:

“I think the voter-enrolment rate of indigenous Australians is very low in certain parts of Australia and this needs to be addressed for the Vote, Yes or No, to count, no matter who is running to raise awareness, or doing something else,” Amanda said.

“Who’s Pat Farmer?” Shirley asked.

“I watched Pat Farmer set out on his run from Hobart. I think it’s admirable, but I also think the government have a long road ahead to get the wording of the Referendum question right,” Candice said.

“Most people already could vote, Yes or No. I think Australians are like that. All this talk and running is fine but not sure it makes a difference,” Roger said.

“I think Pat Farmer needs to be careful when he says that all young people would align with the Yes Vote. Young people are pretty cluey, and yes, they are social justice aware, but best not make generalisations,” Tracey said.

Looking for more from Pat Farmer Boy insured in crash

Asking Southern Downs MP James Lister for his view on Pat Farmer setting out for Uluru, from Hobart, on Monday April 18, the well-known local was somewhat indifferent.

“Good luck to Pat Farmer," Mr Lister relayed. "(But) I’d be much more impressed if he were running for issues like homelessness and housing affordability, rising crime, the state of our roads and hospitals and the rising cost of petrol, electricity and groceries.

"They’re the issues that people in our electorate of Southern Downs raise with me."

The Brisbane-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew flew a boy to hospital last Sunday April 16 after a motocross incident in the Toowoomba region.

It was reported that the boy was riding a motocross bike with a group at a private property "when his and another rider's handlebars collided, causing him to crash".

The rescue chopper assisted at about 1pm and the pilot landed at the scene where the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Critical Care Doctor and Nurse met with local Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics to offer help.

The boy had reportedly suffered serious head injuries and was taken with his father to the Queensland Children's Hospital "in a serious but stable condition".

The Toowoomba-based LifeFlight Surat Gas Aeromedical Service (SGAS) helicopter crew airlifted a young girl to hospital after she was injured while riding a pushbike on Sunday April 16.

It was reported by the rescuers that the primary schooler "had been riding with her family on their property when she fell down a steep two metre embankment".

The aeromedical team worked alongside local Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics to treat the child for facial injuries.

She was reportedly airlifted to Queensland Children's Hospital in a stable condition.

With aircraft based in Roma and Toowoomba, the LifeFlight SGAS helicopter service is fully funded by the four SGAS partners.

I've had a lot of company on the farm lately, with dear friends coming in from far and wide to stay for a few days of campfires, walks in the bush, and visits over good meals.

They've slept in tents in the backyard, set up cots in the sheds, or curled up happily in a comfy armchair, sleeping soundly after long days in the crisp Autumn sunshine collecting fallen branches for the burn pile and helping me get my gardens ready for winter.

Although my grieving heart prefers to be alone, I know it's important for me to regularly be around good people who love me, love my late husband Bear, and are here to help me figure out a way forward.

My favourite moments are mornings when everyone is still in their pyjamas, cold hands wrapped around big mugs of coffee for the grown ups and hot chocolate for the kids, cuddling under blankets and visiting and making plans for the day ahead.

We've explored the caves at Donnelly's Castle, hiked Queen Mary Falls, and stretched out on

our backs at night in the farm yard to watch the stars.

We've made cheese, ground wheat for Norwegian waffles, and read books aloud.

We've also done a lot of cooking together, everyone joining in to chop veggies and collect herbs from the gardens, chatting away as we make hot breakfasts to warm our bones and hearty lunches to keep us going through our adventures.

One of my favourite lunches this time of year is a roasted vegetable salad with a sprightly lime dressing topped with whatever cold, shredded meat is leftover from previous dinners.

It's a versatile recipe for you can use whatever veg you have on hand and it's always delicious.

These days I like a combination of green beans, corn, and artichoke hearts topped with shredded roast chicken and plenty of fresh coriander. I know fresh coriander is one of those herbs that people either love or hate, so, if you're a coriander hater, substitute a herb you love such as basil, tarragon, mint, or a blend.

While this salad is great cold in

summer, when the weather begins to turn in Autumn, I like it best warm or room temperature served with toasted sourdough or a savoury cheese scone.

with SDRC

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) will continue to support mental health initiatives, renewing its groundroots partnership with Borderline Australia, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to youth.

Southern Downs Councillor Cynthia McDonald said Borderline’s camps extend a valuable and supportive lifeline to young people "amid challenging times".

“Council recognises the importance

of young people to the future of the community and we are committed to addressing the needs of our youth through meaningful collaborations that build partnerships and support young people to have a voice,”

Councillor McDonald said.

“Borderline champions youth wellbeing by providing a safe, inclusive and engagement environment for kids to feel heard and supported."

In 2022, 100 teenagers from around Queensland, including 25 from the Southern Downs, benefited from the experience of attending the free camps.

“These camps change lives and are relevant, real and relatable for teenag-

ers," the SDRC representative continued.

“I was fortunate to attend a camp’s graduation last year and saw first-hand the positive impacts of the mentoring on the kids.”

Young people ages 13-15 years an apply to attend the camps which will be held at Cherrabah Resort, Elbow Valley with the first camp to be held from 29 April – 1 May.

Attendees are said to "expect an action packed weekend of special guests, activities, leadership and confidence-building skills".

To jab or not to jab?

editor@thedailyjournal.ink

Vaccinations are again in the spotlight with flu-season ahead.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk received her flu vaccination publicly last week and is encouraging Queenslanders to also have the jab, following a gradual increase in state-wide flu case numbers since January.

“I urge all Queenslanders to go and get vaccinated to protect themselves and their loved ones against the flu," she said. “Because the flu strains change every year, it’s important to get the flu shot every year.

“Queensland has already seen a steady rise in the flu cases across the state and getting vaccinated now provides the best protection before the likely peak in August.

“Flu affects people of all ages, but it is particularly serious in young babies and children, as well as pregnant women and the elderly – so let’s do everything we can to protect our most vulnerable communities.”

More than 6,300 influenza cases were recorded between 1 January and 9 April 2023 and there were only 69 influenza cases during that same period last year. Vaccines are available from a range of primary care immunisation providers,

with several cohorts able to access free vaccines under the National Immunisation Program.

7 easy steps to help fight the flu according to government:

1 - Get a flu shot every year

2 - If you are unwell, stay at home and avoid contact with others

3 - Wash your hands often and properly with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser

4 - Cover your cough and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow. Throw your tissues away immediately and wash your hands afterwards

5 - Try to stay 1.5 metres away from anyone who coughs and sneezes

6 - Clean frequently touched surfaces regularly with soap and water or detergent

7 - Don’t share items such as cups, glasses, cutlery, lip balm, toys or anything that has come into contact with the mouth or nose.

Further information:

Influenza cases and influenza associated deaths in Queensland from

Nikki Wood is a landscape painter whose works are characterized by sweeping vistas and harmonious colour that captures the essence of nature. Her art is an expression of her love for the natural world, in particular her beloved home on the outskirts of Warwick on the Southern Downs. Wood's artistic journey began at a young age when she was taught to draw a landscape by her grandfather. As a child, she developed her aptitude for painting and drawing which she pursued studying at TAFE, then achieving a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Art from the University of Southern Queensland. After more study, Nikki commenced working as a teacher of Art and English, which fostered her love of teaching, with several emerging local artists finding success after years of her tutelage.

One of Nikki's signature techniques is using photographs as a reference for

her paintings. She spends hours scouting locations and taking photos that capture the essence of a particular scene. She then uses these photos to create her paintings, often making minor adjustments to enhance the composition.

Nikki's art is popular with Southern Downs collectors as she depicts the stunning beauty of the countryside surrounding Warwick. In addition, she captures delightful snapshots of her home garden that bring joy and a sense of familiarity to her audience. Despite her busy life, she is a dedicated and prolific artist, inspired by the world around her and the infinite possibilities of paint on canvas or pastel on paper.

Nikki’s exhibition From My Own Backyard is a collection of pastel drawings and acrylic paintings capturing the artist’s love of her home and quintessential scenes of the Southern Downs. Inspired by small snippets of stimulus in her garden to the sweeping landscapes of the Warwick district, the artist’s love of her home town is sure to be contagious and appealing to locals and visitors.

The exhibition will be at Warwick Art Gallery from the 13th of April to the 20th of May. Warwick Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm. Closed on public holidays.

WESTS TIGERS - BYE

2023 ROUND 8 - OVERVIEW

Another week has passed and things have stayed the same so far to start 2023 for Queensland teams.

Brisbane led the way with a big comeback over the Titans to hold onto top spot, while the Cowboys were bitterly disappointing once again as they went down to the Warriors in New Zealand.

They started the Saturday across the ditch and showed some good signs throughout, but once again they were unable to get the job done as they slipped to 16th on the ladder, with only the Wests Tigers below them.

It’s a far cry from last year where they led deep into a preliminary final and were just minutes away from making the big one, to now looking highly unlikely they will get anywhere near the top eight, unless something changes fast.

Their rivals the Broncos find themselves at the other end of the spectrum, flying high in first after what turned out to be a big win over the Gold Coast in front of a sellout crowd. Things looked a bit tense in the first half as the Titans got out to a handy lead, but a try before half time sparked the Broncos into action, racing away with a dominant second half.

Reece Walsh was again the star of the show with an impressive display, turning in another Dally M worthy performance for good measure.

Even though they lost, the Dolphins can take plenty out of their loss to South Sydney. For 40 minutes of the game, they were the far better team and well and truly had the Rabbitohs on the ropes as they looked way too speedy around the middle of the field. Unfortunately for them they couldn’t maintain that intensity, conceding too many points in the second half to fall short.

This week we’re treated to an extra long round with games ranging from Thursday through to Tuesday, with the traditional ANZAC Day fixtures between the Roosters and Dragons, followed by the Storm and Warriors at night. Also on the agenda is another all-Queensland derby as the Dolphins play host to the Titans on Sunday, while the Broncos make the trip to the Northern Territory to take on the Eels in what promises to be a blockbuster, and the Cowboys finally look to break their run of poor form when hosting a gritty Knights side.

Teitzel family share history …

NEXT Tuesday during the laying of wreaths at the ANZAC Day commemorations, members of the Teitzel family will join with others to pay their respects to fallen family members from the First & Second World Wars. The family has a strong military history and they are justifiably proud of the many sacrifices endured by their relatives. They will be laying wreaths in memory of Louis Walter Teitzel K.I.A. 1916, Louis James King Teitzel K.I.A. 1942 and Leonard King Teitzel K.I.A. 1945.

Louis Walter Teitzel born on the 20 October 1816 in Warwick and was the one of six children born to Heinrich & Betsey Teitzel of Warwick.

Louis worked as a telegraphist and just prior to his enlistment he was working as the Post Master at Mount Surprise in northern Queensland. He enlisted in Townsville on the 15 February 1915 and was a member of the 25th Australian Infantry Battalion.

On Saturday 20 November 1915 the Warwick Examiner printed a copy of a letter written to his parents by Louis during his time in Gallipoli. After Gallipoli Louis went on to serve in France. He was killed during a battle at Pozieres where he had been injured and blinded. His name was listed on the Red Cross missing file before being confirmed as Killed in Action. Lieutenant Louis Walter Teitzel died on the 29th July 1916 aged 30.

After the war Mr Heinrich Teitzel tried unsuccessfully to twice locate his son’s remains. It was not until after his own death in 1926 that the remains on his son, he had so diligently searched for were located and buried in 1927. The remains of Loius Walter Teitzel are buried at the A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers, France. His brother Lieut. Arthur Leslie Teitzel survived the war and was returned to Australia.

Louis Walter Teitzel will have his name projected at the Australian War Memorial on the 6th June 2023 at approx. 2.14am.

Leonard King Teitzel was born on the 14 July 1913 in Warwick and was the son of Harry King and Florence Mary Teitzel. The family moved to Maryborough where he attended the Maryborough State High School.

His brother Louis James King Teitzel was K.I.A. on 4 November 1942.

Get those hogs gone

Green Gals

Interested locals have banded together to try the Hoggone baiting program for feral pigs. A group of seven landowners in the district have pooled resources to share two Hog-gone bait boxes. The boxes are deployed based on where there is recent pig activity. We had read about the trial of the Hog-gone system in protected areas on Kangaroo Island, said one landowner. The trial showed no evidence of secondary poisoning, or of native fauna accessing the bait, so we thought it seemed safe enough to try.

Another landowner liked the portability of the bait-box. According to them, often pig activity is in areas that are not close to the house and so it’s good to be able to place the bait-box close to where the pigs are.

A recent first try at poisoning was successful. The landowners involved gave Green Gals a run down of the operation.

We had a sow and piglets around, so we secured the baitbox and then placed corn at the site, they said. After two days the pigs came in, and then we fed every day slowly lowering the lid of the bait box. Once the pigs were lifting the lid and feeding from inside the bait-box we tried the placebo baits. They were licked clean, so the next

night we used the poison baits. While it obviously wasn’t as appealing as the placebo they ate enough to kill them.

Part of the appeal of Hoggone is that there is no risk of secondary poisoning, so bodies don’t need to be collected and disposed of. Involved landowners agree that this is a real plus in the Granite Belt, as the baiting

Positively impacting documentary

Staff Reports

editor@thedailyjournal.ink

After "two very successful" recent showings of her international award-winning documentary, SecondGeneration ANZAC: The Story of Alf Carpenter, Warwick author Deborah Wheeler took time to answer questions at the third and most recent showing on April 13.

“It has been a great privilege for me to share Alf’s story in the lead up to ANZAC Day," Ms Wheeler said last week.

Australian War Widow’s Queensland ex-president, Nancy Payne and former Korean Veteran, Ray Price both were positive about what they viewed.

“This film should be shown to all high school students in the region," Mr Price said. "Many of these children have no idea of the sacrifices made by thou-

sands of young men and women who were not much older than they are now."

Ms Wheeler said she was grateful for local support and "the amazing support of the Warwick RSL" who have allowed the work to be shown at the club.

"Furthermore, it would have been very difficult to have produced the documentary without the financial support received through the RADF and SDRC grants program," she added.

COVID interfered with many production plans however This Story Australia producer Jeff Hughes was said to "work through a myriad of setbacks to ensure the film was completed on time" which allowed Alf Carpenter to see the film before his passing in September 2022.

“To have a documentary made from one of your books is a very special feeling, especially when it means the story of one of our Veterans will live on long

after I am gone,” Ms Wheeler continued. For those who were unable to

attend recent showings, the Warwick author will link in with Jumpers & Jazz in July and

Orlando on holidays

Well these holidays have been quite a treat, hope you have enjoyed them too. We visited some Southern Downs pet stores, which was fun, and when home, there were more animals to focus on, with this puzzle.

The funny thing was that when we arrived at finishing it, one piece was missing! Seems like we need to look in all those areas that puzzle pieces can hide.

I’m looking forward to going back to school in some ways, but in others, it’s been great to have friends over and

stay home on the Granite Belt. My great grandmother even came to stay - grazie Nonna Maria!

I was going to show you my pottery but I have to wait because it’s a present for someone special, and she might see it here!

Happy back-to-school.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

Pete the Punter was at the pub early and got a few under his belt before he noticed a large sign on the wall: Lunch 12 to 1.

“That’s good odds” he said to himself. He called the barman over and said he wanted to put a hundred for a win.

“No gambling here” said the barman and ordered him out. Pete wandered down the next pub where he saw another sign: Lunch 11 to 2.

“The odds were already down” he muttered. “It must be a good thing.”

He went straight to the bar and said he wanted to place a bet.

He was thrown out for the second time.

He wandered around the corner where the third pub displayed the sign: Lunch 1 to 2.

“That’s blown it. It’s odds on now.” But he decided to go in and listen to the result. As he entered the pub the chef delivered a plate on the bar and called “Sausages one.”

Pete the Punter breathed a sigh of relief. “Just as well I didn’t back that bloody Lunch.”

The “worrying” unknown of vaping

Dr Gal Strasberg of Applethorpe, who visits patients all over the Southern Downs, warned that vaping “is not harmless, not considered safe, and carries significant risk of harm to human health and wellbeing”.

He recognised the concerns raised by parents and schools surrounding the use of unregulated vaping products, especially among the vulnerable demographic of school-age children, many of which are attracted to a sense of vaping being “cool” and the products being “colourful”.

The Southern Downs medic confirmed that “risks are serious and numerous”. These include, but are not limited to “addiction, poisoning, seizures, throat ir ritation, and burns and injuries relating to batteries”.

“Anything that emulates and encourages the physical action of smoking is very problematic,” Dr Strasberg further stated.

“A recent study shows that young, non-smokers who use e-cigarettes are much more

likely to smoke. We’re actually talking in the range of three times as likely to go on to smoke regular cigarettes. That has me very worried.”

Dr Strasberg said that in some cases “nicotine vaping can be used to help people quit smoking under close medical supervision”.

“In these cases, nicotine-containing vapes would are required to pass rigorous safety, quality, and efficacy assessments by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration).

“GPs take a ‘person-focused’

approach. There could be a number of reasons why people smoke... from situational or other stressors, challenges with addiction, undiagnosed or under-explored mental health conditions... (and) we need to look at people and their health behaviours in context to best suppor t them.”

The bottom line was that Dr Strasberg affirmed that the unregulated nature of vaping carries significant risk to individual and community health, the risk involved is still somewhat unknown.

The regulated avenue of Quitline has proven to be helpful to quit smoking. That number is 13 78 48.

Asking Granite Belt locals and visitors on the streets this week, about their thoughts, here’s what we gathered:

“I’m a teacher and am very concerned about how easy it is for young people to get their hands on Vapes. There isn’t a parent I know who isn’t concerned,” Charlene said.

“I smoked in my teens as all the lads were doing it. I regret it. Am glad I stopped but it wasn’t until my for-

ties,” Craig said.

“There is so much to worry about with young people at the moment and vaping is just another thing. Thank God my kids don’t go near it. They know it’s wrong. It’s not that hard to explain to them it’s addictive,” Karen said.

“I wish I had a dollar for each time I’ve seen adults vaping as they are setting a bad example. The colours of the vapes do make it look cool. They’re colourful and kind-of stylish. This is clever of the manufacturers but our kids and grandkids will suffer in the long-run,” Sebastian said.

“I find that it’s actually hard to smell the vapes. No wonder schools don’t know what the students might be doing out-of-sight,” Bob said.

“It’s good you don’t see people smoking, now, in public, like before. Smoking has become a bit of a stigma. I don’t smoke but my husband does and I’m glad he can’t do that anywhere. I wonder if there will be a law about not vaping when driving with kids, like there is with smoking?” Sam asked.

“Remember the days when public servants could smoke at their desk? Well, those people suffered. Kids and teens today will suffer in the future. They just don’t know it yet,” Carmen said.

The Long

Paddock with Gerard Walsh

There is a lot of publicity about scams and I had one of those phone calls this week.

The call was from Visa and Mastercard to warn me that a bogus payment of $600 was being made from my account to Amazon and he was ringing me to avoid the payment coming out of

my account. I asked him for his address and he gave me 100 Arthur St, North Sydney.

I didn’t check the address on google to the next day but it is a 23-storey block of office and retail space owned by Capital and Integrated Commercial Trust.

He had my address and kept asking for my bank. That was when I saw red and refused to give him my bank.

I was a little taken in by the attraction to stop the payment to Amazon.

I hate to admit it but I spent 18 minutes of my day talking to a bloke who said he was based in North Sydney.

In the end it was him who hung up as I wasn’t going to give him what he wanted which proved to me it was a scam.

I just hope talking to him for 18

minutes saved someone else. Straight after the phone call, I rang my bank and the lady on the other end of the phone said there was a current scam centred around using the Visa and Mastercard names. She had six similar calls to mine that day, usually she has one. She said Visa and Mastercard were separate so there was no way anyone would be calling on behalf of both.

The bank representative also said the main thing I did right was not open my bank details on the computer when I was talking to him. That is the way they get into your

accounts.

He didn’t ask for passwords, I suppose if I wouldn’t give the name of our bank, I wouldn’t give a password.

In answer to one of my questions, she said there were scams when they call on behalf of your bank but are trying to scam you.

So never be too prepared to give information over, you can always tell the bank you will call them on the regular contact number and if it wasn’t a scam, the earlier conversation will be in notes form.

"Good results" in Stanthorpe golfing circles

Stanthorpe golfers played a single stableford event last Saturday April 15, the day sponsored by Go Vita of Stanthorpe and thanks to John Bylicki for the day and presenting the prizes at the end of the day.

A good result for David Burgess, following his win last week, another good round to post the best score of 39 points and the win on the day. Junior member, Hamish Adam, continued his good form of late with another good round of 38 points to tie up runner up position.

Ladies event was won by Lyn Ludlow and she was very pleased to accept the winning prize, as well as the special extra of least number of putts for the round with 25 needed. Mandy Benussi also posted a good result of 35 points to secure runner up for the ladies.

A sad but amusing incident which occurred on the day concerned one golfer who is often seen at the course during the week practising and one would think knew the difference between solid ground and water. The player spotted a lone ball lying in the waterhole on what he thought was solid ground and decided to go and retrieve the said item. He soon discovered that under the grass was not solid soil but plenty of

water. After sinking almost to his chest, he decided it was not such a good idea after all. Pity no one had a camera on hand at the time. Not daunted by the situation, the player continued his round to completion but disappeared from the clubhouse very quickly after the game.

For others who did receive a prize at the par three holes, Barry Hughes collected at 3, Scott Constable at 12 and 17 for the men was not claimed. Fiona Kelly, Mei Bell and Helen Jones each collected for the ladies. Pro-pins went to Hamish Adam at 1/10, Alan Kerr at 5/14 and Brendan Barker at 9/18.

An encouragement award went to Richard Reardon for his not a lot of points

There was a very good attendance on Sunday April 16, the pleasant weather also contributed to some excellent scores from the shooters.

In the standard class John Cooke continues to show good

form with another victory, just beating Greg Wilson by three x points on equal scores.

The open class was once again very closely contested with several shooters in the running for top spot but Richard McKillop eventually coming out the winner. The Sporter/Hunter class was popular this week with Steve Lee and Hayden Aspinall both scoring maximum points

Steve winning by six "V" bulls, just three short of a perfect score (105.21).

It was great to see young shooters Jack Hildred and Sierra Reck competing along with their fathers Grant and Clint, we hope they continue to enjoy the sport as they progress. Next Sunday 23rd April we will be at the 600 yard mound, sign on at 8.30 am for 9am start. Contact

on the day and others were rewarded with a ball for a run up on the day. In the run down, a ball for scores of 34 points and better for the men and 31 points for the ladies.

Stanthorpe’s long weekend of golf is nearly here, Saturday 29 being a four ball with Kilcoy players on the way followed by the Black Toyota day on Sunday 30, a three person ambrose event. The time sheets have been posted and they usually fill up quickly.

This Saturday April 22 is also a 4BBB stableford sponsored by the RSL Sub Branch, the time sheet is on the board at the club.

Stanthorpe Bowls Club's notes to April 16

Len Girgenti

The wet, windy and not-so-ideal conditions for bowling did not stop the 2023 Club Self Selected Pairs final from going ahead on Friday morning April 7. Last year’s title holders, Frank Gallo and Wendy Hurnall went head-to-head with first time combination of Rocky Thompson and Len Girgenti for the 2023 crown. Rocky and Len skipped away to an early lead and by the eight end were well in front by 9 shots to 1. However, by the 17th end, the game was well and truly in the balance with the scores locked up at 14 shots a piece. Rocky and Len managed to regain their

composure for the last four ends to score another 8 shots to nil to take the title 22 shots to 14.

Congratulations to both teams for a great game of draw bowling and for the good sportsmanship displayed during the final.

In windy conditions on Wednesday April 12 two games of Social Bowls Triples were played. Helen Jones, Barry Murphy and Greg Hammond had a 17 to 13 shot win over H. Jones, Toby Robinson and Dot Rankin and in the second games, Tammy Robinson, Margaret Harvey and Brian Brown had a convincing win over Amanda Jeffs, Colin Denning and Len Girgenti 22 shots to twelve.

In very pleasant conditions on Saturday April 15, another two games of Social Bowls were played and in the first game Colin Denning, Bruno Stefanon

and David Rose had a 6 shot win over Barry Feedler, Rocky Thompson and Peter Smith defeating them by 21 shots to 15. In the other game the team of Robyn Smith, Jack Bell and Len Girgenti had a convincing win over team Polly Lay, Greg Hammond and Brian Brown. The long-awaited Open Fours Carnival went ahead without a hitch on Sunday April 16 at the Stanthorpe Bowls Club with 14 fourteen teams from around the district taking part in the event. Teams from Stanthorpe, The Summit, Warwick City, Warwick East, Warwick Southern Cross and Clifton did battle for the $1,200 prize money. Some great bowls were played on the day and the overall winners were Warwick Southern Cross Bowls Club with a score of 3 wins + 36. The runners up with a score

Sunday April 16 was a special day - The Maureen Bates Memorial Day. There was a good field of ten ladies who took advantage of

the beautiful conditions. The event was a Four Ball Best Ball competition. Filomena Silver and Mei Bell won the trophy with a beautiful

of 3 wins + 22 were Peter Collis’s composite team. Third position went to the team of Rocky Thompson, Amanda Jeffs, Bruno Stefanon and Len Girgenti of the Stanthorpe Bowls Club with a score of 3 wins +14 and last round winners for the day were Gordon Assay’s composite team with the top score of +16

A big thank you to our Major Sponsors, Stanthorpe Bendigo Community Bank and the Stanthorpe Golf Club for sponsoring the Carnival. Without their ongoing and generous support, these types of events would not be possible. Thank you also to our ladies for supplying the refreshments and lunch, our members and supporters who donated prizes for the multi draw and to everyone else who helped in any way to make the

score of 42 points. Mandy Benussi and Fiona Kelly combined well and were runners up with an also excellent score of 41 points. Mandy won the pin shot on the 12th. Lynette Ludlow took the pin shot on the 17th and Mei had an excellent shot to the green on the

day an outstanding success. Also, a special thanks to our umpire for the day Paul Beaman and our scorer Jeff Alldridge for giving up their time to officiate at our carnival. Our Open Triples Carnival will be held later in the year on Sunday October 8 and will be sponsored by the Stanthorpe RSL Services Club.

Thanks to the generosity of Stanthorpe Bendigo Community Bank, Stanthorpe Golf Club will soon have a Defibrillator machine on the premises. This life saving machine will be so very beneficial to patrons including Golfers, Bowlers, Croquet players, supporters, and visitors.

Thank you also to Bendigo Community Bank manager Kurt Empton and also Don Gaske for their input during the process of acquiring the machine.

5/14th. Every year since Maureen passed Rex Bates has provided trophies for her Memorial Day. Rex and Maureen were popular Sporters players and Rex sponsors a day for Sporters as well. His ongoing support is much appreciated by the golf club.

First up win for Suburbs

Atry in the 79th minute by Ian Brown secured Eastern Suburbs a win first up in men’s rugby league in the Border competition.

Playing at home on Saturday, the home side was reduced to 11 men and Tenterfield to 12

after the referee came down hard on a pushing and punching incident after 20 minutes of the game.

Fullback Aaron Hinch scored the first men’s try for Suburbs since the club last played open rugby league in 1985 when he shot through under the posts.

Captain-coach Matt Marshall converted.

Tenterfield led 16-6 at halftime but Suburbs took the lead 24-20 with six minutes to play.

The visitors regained the lead again with three minutes to go before Mick Brackin and Marshall went the short side to put Brown over for the winning try.

Hinch scored three tries, Brown one and Joel Ray one with Marshall landing four goals.

Marshall said with Tenterfield one player down, it gave player of the match Hinch more room to weave his magic. He has

already played for the under-18 Clydesdales this season and decided to play for the Suburbs Hornets rather than a representative level.

In the ladies league tag game, premiers Tenterfield led 20-0 at halftime before winning 42-4. Dracie Delphine was the Hornets try scorer and Mia Ammenhausen the players player.

Warriors win threefrom-three over Tigers

The Wattles Warriors adjusted their season focus on Sunday April 16 at Platz Oval scooping the pool against the luckless Southern Suburbs Tigers as they nailed wins across all grades in front of a big crowd.

A grade coach Travis Burns’ ‘Stillwater Pastoral Company’ A Grade team were desperate for a winning result to bulk up confidence as they prepare for this coming Saturday’s clash with the Warwick Cowboys at Father Ranger Oval.

In their first two season outings Wattles crashed against Warwick in the Barrett Family Shield, and Dalby in Round 1, albeit in closely fought tussles.

The Tigers may have come off a win over Oakey in their previous outing, but their top side was no match for the Warriors on Sunday.

Burns was pleased with his charges across the paddock in their 42 – 4 win, especially their defence.

Exciting fullback Matthew Christensen was in everything across the eighty minutes showing a more than generous dose of class in an above average Wattles attacking game.

In recognition Christensen collected Player of the Match honours and was also judged the Toowoomba Rugby League Player of the Round for Round 2.

Winger Mitch Bourke also enjoyed a cracking game harvesting a hat trick of tries.

Bourke was denied a

four-pointer in the fourth minute when his effort was ruled a double movement.

But just six minutes later giant free running front rower Mitch Duff crashed over for the home sides initial try.

Bourke claimed his elusive first try, on hand in support as Christensen broke through in the twentieth minute.

Tries by Jake Meddleton and Tom Morris saw the Warriors head to half time comfortably ahead 22 – 0.

Bourke bothered the scoreboard attendant again in the fifth and thirtieth minutes of the second stanza with touchdowns, while Christensen, who had been leading the Tigers on a merry chase throughout, cashed in with a well earned try courtesy of a Souths ingoal error three minutes from full time.

“Our back five were in sensational form” said Burns, “Matty Christensen at the back, wingers Jake Meddleton and Mitch Bourke along with centres Nick Van Der Poel and Austin Jennings”.

The team mentor also heaped praise on his halves five-eight Tom Morris and halfback Brayden Paix.

“It was a special day for Tommy especially, after marrying

Holly McNamara on Saturday”, and he was rewarded with a classy try against the Tigers to add to the celebrations.”

Wattles backs created room to move and gave the ball plenty of air as they ran in seven of the Warriors eight touchdowns. Their forward pack surged upfield with regularity as they carved out room for the backs to weave their magic.

Burns’ line-up is gelling in place to near full strength for the coming Warwick Cowboys clash.

Premiership winning forward Ryan Stevens is expected to line up for his debut 2023 appearance however impact bench star Brendan McBride will continue to be a short-term absentee.

Cowboys win at Oakey

Gerard Walsh

Coach Col Speed still wants improvement despite a 42-16 Warwick Cowboys win against Oakey in round 2 of the Toowoomba Rugby League com-

petition.

Fullback Nick Chapman was the player of the match with two tries and seven goals from seven attempts.

In fact the Cowboys won three games against Oakey on Saturday at Oakey and only missed one goal all day.

In A grade, the Cowboys led

Saturday evenings Wattles verses Cowboys clash won’t be for the faint of heart, as the emotion fuelled Cowboys, fresh after a big win over Oakey last weekend, strive for the premiership points and the prestigious Basil Nolan Memorial Trophy.

Well-known and respected community member Basil Nolan Jnr enjoyed a very close involvement with the Warwick Cowboys over his lifetime, and sadly lost his life in a farm accident in 2018. He is remembered in local rugby league circles with the trophy bearing his name contested annually between Warwick and Wattles.

Wattles 42 (Mitchell Duff, Mitchell Bourke 3, Jacob Meddleton, Tom Morris, Brayden Paix, Matthew Christensen tries; Braydon Paix 5 goals).

Reserve Grade - ‘Draper Hat Trick Launches Victory’

Livewire ‘Tony Morris Tiling’

Wattles Reserve Grade winger Warren Draper scored three tries as his Warriors outfit took their game by the throat on Sunday on their way to a 42 – 4 success.

Draper crossed in the second, sixth, and 27th minutes to have Wattles ahead 16 – 0, before experienced centre Tim Hentschel tapped in with a try double to present the home side with a 28 – 0 half time lead.

Front row skipper Jordan Henry impressed with his powerful running and defence, while Drapper and Hentschel shone in the backs.

Coach Tony Morris showered accolades on his team who have

a three from three winning record, undefeated this season to date.

“We had a good pre-season, and while our two fixture rounds have been excellent, our line up isn’t quite set as yet.

Wattles 42 (Warren Draper 3, Tim Hentschel 2, Brayden Wilson 2, Tom Duggan tries; Jordan Henry 5 goals)

Under 19 – ‘Marley Leads

Warriors to Initial Season Win’ Hard toiling forward Marley Tunstead set the example for his team mates against Souths with a superb effort that underlined Wattles hard fought 40 – 22 success over the Tigers.

Coach Cameron Hamblin credited all his team members, but singled out Tunstead given his inspiring performance.

Gifted five-eight Judd Rei was also among the Warriors to fire with his impressive kicking game, along with classy forward George Nott.

Wattles 40 (Aiden Suhan 2, Harry Schwenke, Chris Watt, Daniel Morris, Lachlan Hearn, Koby De Luca tries; Koby De Luca 6 goals)

early and then 18-10 at halftime.

Lock Mitch Wilson and three quarter Tyrelle Ross each scored two tries and Tate Brombal one.

Chapman was well supported by lock Mitch Wilson and forward Dan Conn who also received player of the year points.

“Everyone did their job. Half

Nick Carrie is starting to come into this own at halfback,” he said.

In defence, Speed was happy with the work of hooker Harry Sullivan in the middle and second rower Morgan Byrne.

“We need to fix up our completion rate before we play Wattles on Saturday night,” he said.

“The team has been winning ugly.

“We conceded two tries when we had two players in the sin bin against Oakey.”

The Warwick reserve-grade side is performing well with Dylan Lippi and Matt Henry two of the best along with two Fijian players who are known to their teammates as Joe and Ian.

Warwick will host Wattles in three games on Saturday with the under-19 game at 3.30pm, reggies at 5pm and A grade at 6.30pm. Speed has no doubt Wattles will be tough to beat.

“They had a good win against Souths,” he said.
