Tax increase for low income earners

The federal government are planning to not continue the tax offset first introduced by the Turnbull LNP Government 201819 budget, which will equate to one of the largest tax increases in history.

The tax offset, initially introduced as a temporary measure,

was extended by the Morrison Government during the Covid pandemic, and again in March last year as a last ditch effort to secure votes.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age reported on Saturday April 8 that the Treasurer, Jim Chalmers will not continue the tax

Warwick and Queensland Bulls' paceman Mark Steketee has finished another season with the Bulls and may head to England for a short season with a county.

He missed most of the second innings of the last Bulls game with a hip flexor injury which is coming good but plans to sit out the month of April.

“I have played cricket continually for 18 months so the body needs a rest,” he said.

“I am hoping to get to

offset in an effort to kerb the spiralling inflation problem our economy is experiencing.

Some experts are describing the tax increase as the equivalent of two Reserve Bank interest rate rises, however economists argue it will save long-term pain.

AMP Chief Economist, Shane

Oliver told 9News that he “knows it will cause lot of pain for many households”.

“But by the same token, if it is extended, it could mean more interest rate rises than otherwise would have been the case,” Mr Oliver said.

Inland rail cut in half... and guess which half they cut?

The Australian government has a few B-Doubles full of gold bullion ($368 billion to be precise to the nearest billion) for a handful of submarines, not now, not next year, but over the next three decades), but is hesitating over less than 10% of that for a key piece of infrastructure above the ground….the Inland Rail. Apparently the price tag of the Inland Rail has expanded ever so slightly, from $16.4

billion to $31.4 billion in two years, according to a report released to the feds a week or so back. So why not just got rid of one submarine, and have a piece of dry-land infrastructure that will never be entirely out of date? Nope. Instead the Commonwealth has decided to commit to just half the railway, and not ‘our’ half: Melbourne to Parkes will be prioritised, leaving some of the more controversial work on the floodplains of southern Queensland hanging dry for another day, another government. Minister for infrastructure Catherine King was on the radio as we went to press declaring “We’ve frankly got a lot of work to do, to clean the mess up that’s been left to us, but also pardon the pun, to get this project back on track.” (OM).

A culturally uplighting night

Saturday April 29 is the night to put on your dancing shoes for a Dinner Dance at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre. Fortunato Isgro and local drummer Frank Maugeri will play their hearts out

at the Dinner Dance to help us all keep warm as the autumn chills set in. Call Frank on 0412 086 983 to book. The night will be supported by the Lions Club who are helping donate funds for those in need and other funds raised will go towards palliative care services at the Stanthorpe Hospital.

The cost of the dinner is $70 per adult and $35 for children.

Operation Victor Easter began on Saturday April 1, with four people killed on Queensland roads in just five days.

"Any death is a tragedy for the family and friends involved, as well as the first responders," a police spokesperson said. "Already this year, 63 lives have been lost on Queensland roads. 23 of those were motorbike riders."

Police Minister Mark Ryan said these numbers "are simply too high", offering sympathies to the families of those who have died.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to those families as well as those who have already lost a loved one on Queensland

Dalveen may be a small village, but it hums with activity throughout the year. The Dalveen Sports Club which was formed sometime in the 1880s hosts a weekly Friday night dinner at the Dalveen Hall. Volunteers run a licensed bar and cook a two-course meal for locals, family and friends. The evenings are an opportunity for Dalveenites to socialise and people new to the area to meet locals. The Friday night dinners began in 2002 as a community resilience initiative during the millennium drought and locals continue to support each other over din-

roads this year," he said. “Police have been out in force on our roads doing their part to bring this number down, but motorists have a vital role to play.

“Don’t drive affected by alcohol or drugs, don’t speed, don’t drive while tired or distracted and wear your seatbelt. These are really simple measures, but they are critical.

“One wrong decision on our roads can end your life or someone else’s, and one death can ruin the lives of dozens of people.

“We know we can do better, and we’re pleading with motorists to do better,” Minister Ryan said.

With the school Easter holidays coming to a close this weekend, police remain vigilant as we all can do our part to make wise choices.

The Dalveen Film Society, a sub-committee of the Sports Club, presents a movie night in the Dalveen Hall every second month. Patrons can enjoy a quiet drink from the bar and a taste plate of food with a theme appropriate to the movie being screened. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a movie night without lollies, popcorn and ice-cream. This month the New Zealand film Juniper will be screened on Saturday April 29th. Details can be found on the Dalveen Film Society Facebook page. No need to worry about the chilly autumn air. Rate of unique offenders lowest on record

An independent report released by the Queensland Government’s Statistician’s Office reveals that the rate of youth and adult offenders is the lowest on record. While the statistics reveal there are less offenders, it has shown that the cohort of offenders are committing more offences, leading to an increase in the state’s crime rates.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said that there will always be a fluctuation in crime statistics, but the police and the government will never relent in their efforts to keep the community safe.

“While the rate of unique youth offenders and rate of unique adult

offenders has declines according to the report, the reality is that there is a hardcore group of recidivist offenders who have to be held accountable,” Mr Ryan said.

“That’s why the government recently passed tough new laws that target those hardcore offenders with a new breach of bail offence, among many other measures”.

“The government makes no apology for doing this, because keeping the community safe is always paramount”.

The independent crime report for 2021/22 indicated that the rate of unique youth offenders had fallen to its lowest number in 10 years to 1,926.4 per 100,000 people, a drop of more than 20% from the 2012/13 report.

The rate of unique adult offenders also dropped, however by a smaller margin of 534.7 per 100,000 since the 2012/13 report.

Member for Southern Downs, James Lister has been vocal in his opposition to the tough new laws enacted by the Palaszczuk Government, telling the Town and Country Journal that he is not impressed by “those carefully crafted statistics”.

“What do they mean about ‘unique’ crimes? He says crime is at a record low point, so when did the records start?,” Mr Lister said.

“Even if those figures are meaningful and correct from a statewide picture, the crime situation is still disastrous, and a consequence of the Palaszczuk Government’s softening of youth crime laws, leaving a generation of young crims with no respect for the law whatsoever”.

“Has he seen our insurance bills lately? I can tell Mr Ryan that thanks to the Palaszczuk Government’s touchy-feely approach to youth crime, they

have skyrocketed!”.

“I said in parliament, that the new ‘tough’ laws have been designed to look tough, but will make no difference as magistrates are still forced, by law, to lock up repeat offenders only as a last resort, or not until their rap sheet is a mile long… how does that protect good law abiding citizens from crime?”.

Of disappointing note, was that the instances of domestic violence was still a major concern.

The Government Statistician raised caution, saying “a change to police data recording methodology has increased the reported number of offences associated with domestic violence matters, and that change needs to be taken into account when making comparisons over the time series”.

“But the reality is even just one instance of crime is one too many… for every crime there is a

victim, and it can be a traumatising experience”.

Police Commissioner, Katarina Carroll said the Queensland Police Service want Queensland to be the safest state and continuing a focus on delivering frontline services to reduce crim.

“Despite the strong population growth in Queensland, the report indicates a sustained decline in the rate of both youth offenders and adult offenders across the state,” Ms Carroll said.

“There are several variables which have affected crime statistics reported… nonetheless, any reported rise in crime is something police take seriously”.

“Police are constantly assessing emerging crime issues and implementing a range of proactive strategies to disrupt and prevent offences occurring at a local level”.

EVERYONE’S ENTITLED with Andrew

I’ve always been a big fan of Easter, for a whole bunch of reasons. The Easter story about the resurrection of Christ. The long, long weekend to spend with family and friends. The eating of seafood on Good Friday. Hot Cross buns…… oh and of course Easter Eggs. Who could forget Easter Eggs.

I mean, sometimes I wish I could forget the Easter Eggs but they are just so, well, ummm, yummy. I can’t. I always eat way too many and then spend the next couple of weeks fearful of a trip to the doctor and a blood test. Because after eating half your own body weight in chocolate a blood test report will come back with a few red lines through it. Followed by some facing up to the truth and the stern talking to from the doctor.

According to some wise person, “It is better to give than to receive", and I agree. But with a large family, trying to keep track of the equitable distribution of eggs is a nightmare. If I give one child a giant Easter bunny or a Humpty-dumpty egg full of chocolate beanies, you need to give everyone exactly the same. Or else there is bound to be wailing, gnashing of teeth and sad looks allround.

Or do you? I’m saying, “no more.”

We have seven kids. Four of them now have spouses or partners. There are four grandchildren for now, but as I write this there’s another one on the way which may even be here by the time this is published next Friday. Some are allergic to chocolate, some to lactose. There’s one I can’t even give real eggs to because he hates them. So how does that work out? How do I make it equitable and fair?

Well, to put it simply, I can’t. I just do the best I can and try to be as fair as possible.

Maybe you reading this and saying that Andrew should just try a bit harder and maybe I could, but….. does it really matter? Shouldn’t everyone I bought something for just be grateful that dad/grandad/ husband remembered this year and enjoy that lactose free/carob/sugar/ vegan or real milk chocolate egg?

If there’s something I have tried to bestow in the fruits of my loins, it’s thankfulness. In a big family you just had to. And thank goodness they show it.

My kids know better than to come to me with “sad stories” that sister got one more egg than them or so on. I will just send them away with instructions to write me a story about how thankful they are for everything they have. Especially yummy Easter treats.

I’m sorry for the lessons in tough love kids, but I’m definitely with Lucky’s dad, you know, from the episode of “Bluey” where they play pass the parcel. (If you don’t, sit down and watch it!)

Otherwise, we are just raising a nation of squibs.

The Voice. Not the John Farnham type where we could all sing along, but The Voice to parliament where despite the words (something like “you're the voice, try and understand it”) we…um, don’t understand it…

There’s a fair bit of wiggle room in the wording of the referendum and I’m one of those who can see as much bad as good in the referendum question. The original owners of this country have a voice to parliament now, but like all democracies, a voice has to be matched by ears. If the ears chose to, they could listen. I’ve read the referendum materials now and it is clear that even on pretty well purely indigenous issues (e.g. let’s say alcohol bans in indigenous communities) the Voice will have no power over parliament—just the power to talk, not the power to veto. Even on ‘purely’ indigenous issues, this Voice is just that—a voice. Australia’s First Nations peoples have had a voice to parliament of sorts since the year I was born (in the form of the right to vote) and more recently, ATSIC was a body with an office close to the corridors of power in Canberra. But there is no single ‘indigenous’ position, any more than there is a single Italian-Australian or AsianAustralian ‘vote’ or ‘voice’ or ‘view’. So it will always be more symbolic, and more fraught than what one would hope, if one were hoping for the best outcomes for indigenous Australians.

The Voice isn’t going to suddenly ‘ruin’ the constitution, and I’ve got no

doubt, if the Yes vote wins, Australia will continue to be run by white men, the majority of whom have either a background in law, or rural or union politics. (Check out the biographies of our MPs.) The Voice will only allow the group to make ‘representations’ to parliament, and hopefully that means they get to speak in parliament…but it can’t force the MPs to vote one way or another, and the parliament will (according to the wording) “have power to make laws with respect to matters relating to the …Voice, including its composition, functions, powers and procedures.” In other words, in black and white, it states that the parliament can force change on the Voice, but the Voice can’t force change on the parliament. So we’re at square one, with parliament still fully in control.

The reason I will be voting ‘yes’ is simple, and it’s the reason a lot of people will be voting ‘yes’—not because of an enthusiasm for the referendum question, but because I can imagine the impact of a ‘no’ vote on both how Australians perceive ourselves, and how the world perceives Australia. The ‘yes’ is full of sound and fury signifying almost nothing, but ‘no’ will be a punch in the guts for reconciliation with our national history—the history that’s a bit older and a bit wiser than the Constitution.

Refresher quiz proposed for drivers

Araft of new road safety measures proposed by the state government could potentially see Queensland motorists being required to sit an online road rules test when they are renewing their licence.

Minister for Transport, Mark Bailey said the state government were considering implementing the refresher course, in response to suggested measures following the Road Safety Roundtable held in January.

The Road Safety Roundtable was called after Queensland recorded its worst year of road fatalities in 13 years, last year.

The Transport Minister said in a press conference on Monday, that the refresher quiz would not require the person renewing their licence to physically attend a Department of Transport office to complete the test, but will be completed online, similar to the courses available for learner and new drivers.

“It’s not about whether we take your licence off you or not, it’s about educating you as a driver,” Mr Bailey said.

“If you don’t get it right the first time, you will get another shot at it and another shot at it until you

do get it right”.

Minister Bailey told ABC Radio Brisbane “one example of that might be, we brought in a whole lot of new measures about personal mobility devices”.

“It’s not designed to be some big onerous test that everyone’s going to have to spend lots of time on”.

Member for Southern Downs, James Lister told the Town and Country Journal he would not oppose the proposal if it is only a minor multi-choice one, to ensure drivers understand any new road rules.

“But honestly, where are the Palaszczuk Government’s priorities?,” Mr Lister said.

“In our electorate of Southern Downs, the biggest killer on our roads by far is driver fatigue, yet they

closed our Gladfield Driver Reviver!”.

“The Palaszczuk Government says they’re concerned about the road toll. So they just closed our much beloved Gladfield Driver Reviver, and instead want us to be educated about lane splitting for motorbikes in congested traffic?”.

“These topsy-turvy priorities are a great demonstration of how disconnected from our community the Palaszczuk Government has become”.

“The closure of our Gladfield Driver Reviver last month, against determined community opposition, was the most miserable government decision I’ve seen in my six years as our local member”.

In addition to the potential refresher quiz, the Road Safety Roundtable also floated the idea of immediate licence suspension for drivers caught exceeding speed limits by 40km/h or more.

The long proposed ‘Ride to Zero’ program to address motorcycle safety was officially announced as well.

RACQ Group Chief Executive Officer, David Carter welcomed the rollout of the ‘Ride to Zero’ program, as motorcycle riders make up 5% of the state’s road users, but a quarter of Queensland’s road toll last year were motorcyclists.

Tax increase for low income earners

"... will cause lot of pain for many households” said Chief Economist

Continued from page 1...

The Coalition opposition have criticised the move declaring it as another hit to Australian families who are already facing tough times.

However, Australian’s within the $45,000 to $200,000 tax bracket will receive further tax breaks when the stage 3 tax cuts come into effect in the next financial year.

These measures are facing heavy criticism as they are believed to benefit the high-income earners unfairly.

Entrepreneur, Dick Smith has criticised the stage 3 tax cuts, telling 2GB in March that rich people should pay more tax.

In a press conference last week, lead-

er of The Greens, Adam Bandt called for the tax offset to remain at the expense of the stage 3 tax cuts.

“Labor is making everyday people pay for the stage 3 cuts for politicians and billionaires,” Mr Bandt said.

“Australian desperately needs to stop the handouts to billionaires and corporations so we can tackle the cost of living crisis by getting dental into Medicare, boosting income support and freezing rents."

Anglicare Australia echoed these calls in January claiming increasing the rate of JobSeeker and other Centrelink payments can be achieved for less than the cost of the stage 3 tax cuts, lifting millions of people out of poverty.

Good Friday storm

Atornado was rumoured to be roaming the Darling Downs region on Good Friday, and while the Bureau of Meteorology said they would investigate the sighting claims of storm chasers, there has been no evidence found at this time.

In this same storm, massive “Mango-sized hail” and “100km/h” winds were reported in Southern Queensland by The Courier Mail.

A “long lasting” storm cell formed west of Toowoomba in the afternoon, and moved up towards the Sunshine Coast, bringing wild winds, heavy rain, and giant hail.

Having driven through some

of this storm on Good Friday, I can say that the worst of the storm we experienced was on The Range.

The fog was so thick you couldn’t see no more than a few metres ahead, apart from the headlights of the car in front, and the road was so wet that you could feel how slippery it was from inside the car.

Once on the other side of The Range, heading to Warwick, the fog dispersed almost instantly, but the heavy rain continued to come down in buckets throughout the Journey, until reaching Warwick, where it eased out.

At the time we were driving, it was after 5pm, so there’s a chance we missed a lot of the storm. We did not see a tornado, and thankfully, the winds at the time did not appear to be going at 100km/h.

Southern Downs Regional Council is continuing to support the region’s recovering communities following last year’s floods, as well as recent bushfire and storm events through a new

series of localised outreach sessions.

Cuppa and a Chat is an informal opportunity for anyone still doing it tough or not back on their feet yet to come and chat with a range of non-for-profit service agencies to find out what support is still available.

Disaster Recovery Officer James Wong said Council and its

interagency partners were committed to following through on the community’s recovery journey and he encouraged anyone affected by the region’s disaster events to attend one of the sessions.

“Recovery is a journey and Council understands that people are still rebuilding their lives 12 months on from the 2022 flood events in particular,” Mr Wong

said.

“Council and its partners are committed to supporting locals and helping restore people’s emotional, social and physical wellbeing.”

The first Cuppa and a Chat session was hosted in Leyburn on Wednesday April 5 and future sessions are planned for Pratten, Killarney, Warwick and

Applethorpe, with the opportunity for more to be scheduled in other locations.

Weather and weeds: The end of La Niña

the median and half are below. It’s handy for weather forecasts as it gives a better idea of the “average” without getting skewed by the outlying very high or very low records.

But no end to weeds

On April 19, HOPE (Householders’ Options to Protect the Environment Inc.) is hosting a weeds forum in Toowoomba offering to help you to “discover everything you need to know about weeds”.

From6.15pmto7pmeacheveningthere

On 30 March the Bureau of Meteorology released its latest seasonal predictions for the period May to July.

The most recent La Niña has now finished, and the equatorial Pacific has returned to neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions. There Bureau expects that there is at least a 50% chance of the next El Niño forming in the latter half of 2023.

For the Southern Downs this move away from La Niña conditions means below median rainfall is likely to very likely (60% to greater than 80% chance). The maximum temperatures are very likely (greater than 80% chance) to be higher than median while the minimum temperatures are expected to be close to average.

Handy tip: the median is the number that's exactly in the middle of a set of numbers (either rainfall or temperature), so half the numbers are above

Speakers include Janet Barker from Invasive Species Queensland, Andrew Davidson and Isabella Murphy from Southern Queensland Landscapes, Bruce Lawrie from Condamine Catchment Management Association and Hugh Krenske from Friends of the Escarpment Parks Toowoomba.

Topics will include identifying common weeds; understanding weed impact in both natural and farming systems; managing weeds within a flourishing landscape; and distinguishing between native and non-native species in grasslands. For those that are lucky enough to have weeds under control, there will be a discussion on how the public can be engaged in weed removal activities such as Qld Weed Spotters Network program and Weed Clean-Up events.

The forum is from 1pm to 4pm at UniSQ Toowoomba Campus in Building L room L209. Admission is free, registration is essential at https:// rb.gy/mbtjap and attendance is possible by Zoom. For more information contact the Project Officer, Isabella Murphy on isabella.murphy@sqllandscapes.org.au

Coolatai Grass is problematic for graziers, and is a major threat to natural biodiversity as it can invade undisturbed natural ecosystems, of John Hosking, NSW DPI, © State of New South Wales.

Ihave a couple of children staying with me on the farm this week, and we've been having all sorts of adventures together.

From collecting eggs and calling goats in from the paddock to feeding chooks and harvesting herbs for winter teas, they've been getting a crash course in what it's like to run a farm.

Yesterday they learned how to tell if eggs are fresh or not by covering them with water and seeing if any bob up to the surface.

Over the weekend they learned how to quickly build a fire with

strips of gum tree bark and keep it going with fallen branches knocked to the ground by the last thunder storm.

Today I taught them how to make a simple farm cheese for us to take on a picnic at Queen Mary Falls.

Of all the cheeses I like to make, this is by far the quickest and easiest. The only ingredients required are milk and apple cider vinegar, and the only tools are a pot, a whisk, and a tea towel or piece of muslin laid in a colander. It can be made over a campfire, a gas bottle with a cooking ring, a hot plate, or a cooker,

and you can use raw milk, pasteurised and homogenised milk, even that box of UHT milk that's been sitting in the pantry for emergencies.

It's a forgiving cheese and a great one to make with kids because they can see and taste results so quickly and it gives them confidence to try more complicated cheeses like feta or halloumi.

It's also a versatile cheese. Since its made without salt, it works in both sweet and savoury

dishes. I like to crumble it and sprinkle it over roasted or preserved stone fruit, scrambled eggs, or salads. I'll often add it to a plate with sliced meats, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and artichokes preserved in olive oil for a quick and delicious lunch.

Country Cheese Recipe

Ingredients:

2 litres whole milk

Apple cider vinegar

Instructions:

Set colander in sink and line

with muslin or cheesecloth. Pour milk into large saucepan and set over medium heat.

Bring just to a simmer (DO NOT BOIL), stirring regularly so it doesn’t scorch.

Remove from heat and add apple cider vinegar, 1 Tbsp at a time, stirring slowly until curd splits.

Darling Downs Health is reminding residents that the onset of winter does not mean a reprieve from pesky mosquitoes.

Dr Liam Flynn from the Darling Downs Public Health Unit said the opposite was true, with some mosquitoes becoming more active now the cooler temperatures have returned.

“In some rural areas, we actually see more mosquitoes at this time of year because it is actually too hot from them during the summer months,” Dr Flynn said.

Whilst also being annoying, mosquitoes can pose a health risk with their bite causing more than just an itchy bump.

“Mosquitoes can pass on a range of viruses from animals to humans,” Dr Flynn said.

“These viruses may cause mild symptoms in some people, but other people may experience severe sickness, hospitalisation, and even death.

“It is therefore important for people to continue protecting themselves from getting sick from a mozzie bite even in winter.”

Personal protection includes:

Wear light-coloured clothing with long sleeves and long trousers, and covered footwear; Use effective insect repellent on exposed skin that contains DEET, picaridin or Oil of Lemon;

Eucalyptus avoid being outside at dusk and dawn; Cover windows or doors with insect screens; Clean up around your house and remove any standing to prevent mosquito breeding.

Caring for the heart

Dear Editor Heart disease is Australia’s leading cause of death and tragically takes the life of one Australian every 30 minutes.

The good news is, heart

disease is largely preventable.

The bad news? Our best tool for heart disease prevention – the Medicare Heart Health Check – is about to expire.

We are seeking a guarantee from the Australian

Government that funding will continue beyond 30 June this year.

Nearly 440,000 Australians have seen their GP for a Medicare subsidised Heart Health Check since they were introduced.

The Heart Foundation is asking the Government to invest $11.5 million per year, to continue subsidising Heart Health Checks into the future.

This is a relatively small investment compared to the $1 billion in healthcare costs that could be saved with broad uptake of Heart Health Checks in high-risk Australians and more importantly, the 67,000 heart attacks, strokes and heart disease related deaths that could be prevented over five years.

It’s not too late for your readers to take action: I urge

you to please help us save Medicare Heart Health Checks by signing our petition, writing to local MPs and sharing the petition with friends and family.

To take action, please visit www.heartfoundation.org. au/save-heart-checks

to a friend of Beyond Blue

Beyond Blue pays its respects to Board Director Russell Taylor AM, who passed away recently.

Russell, a proud Kamilaroi man, had been a member of the Beyond Blue Board since September 2019.

"Russ was a thoughtful, compassionate leader who dedicated his life to advancing the interests of First Nations Peoples," Beyond Blue Chair The Hon Julia Gillard AC said.

"He was a passionate advocate for community social and emotional wellbeing and Beyond Blue is deeply grateful for his contribution. We will miss him.

"We honour his profound legacy and send our deep condolences to his family, friends, and community."

Mr Taylor was instrumental to Beyond Blue’s advocacy and work for better wellbeing for First Nations Peoples, including Beyond Blue’s support for the full implementation of Uluru Statement from the Heart and Close the Gap cam-

paign, and as co-chair of Beyond Blue's Reconciliation Action Plan working group.

He often spoke about his hope for change and his belief that a Voice to Parliament will contribute to better outcomes for First Nations Peoples and communities.

"Russell's deep expertise and understanding, wise counsel and empathy strengthened our thinking and decision making. That has been appreciated by all and especially by those of us who worked closely with

him. It has been a privilege to learn from him over the past four years,” Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman said.

Mr Taylor's work with Beyond Blue was part of a distinguished career that spanned decades of public service.

He received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Technology Sydney in 2019 and was named NAIDOC Male Elder of the Year in 2018.

After retiring as the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Institute of

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, he became an owner and director of the Burbangana Group.

He served on the boards of the Healing Foundation, Lowitja Institute, and Nature Conservation Trust and as a delegate to the National Congress of Australia's First Peoples.

H e was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia in 2015 for significant service to the community as a cultural leader and public service executive.

Stanthorpe Streetscape

It’s an exciting time for Stanthorpe as the streetscape beautification project for the CBD continues to gain momentum.

Council’s project staff are working with contractors to fine tune plans for Stage 1 in High Street and make sure the updated concept reflects the community’s vision for a town centre that manages the needs of shoppers, businesses, tourists, cars and pedestrians, while still maintaining that special Stanthorpe feel.

Council is also in discussions with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to obtain sign off on proposed designs.

Southern Downs Councillor Stephen Tancred said he looked forward to the streetscape project progressing to the next stage.

“Stanthorpe is renowned for its vibrant and diverse food, music and arts scene and the CBD precinct is alive with the town’s unique country charm and quirky localised art,”

“The streetscape project is a labour of love for the community and it’s important that the details of the plan reflect the community’s vision to design a town-centre for both locals and visitors to enjoy. It has to be practical but welcoming.

“There have already been a number of exciting enhance-

ments over the years, including Fromes Lane and the Rogers Street carpark, and the next stage of the project will further enhance the town’s identity.”

After the next round of consultation with TMR on some updated and improved crossing designs, and Councillors have been briefed, Council will engage in further community

and business consultation to discuss the proposed formal crossing in High Street and maximise car parking spaces in the area.

TITANS - BYE

2023 ROUND 7 - OVERVIEW

One of the more amazing rounds of the NRL greeted us in round six, and it wasn’t necessarily a good thing for the tipsters.

A couple of big upsets spoiled hopes of a big score for many, with two of Queensland’s more fancied sides tasting defeat as heavy favourites, while another proved its start to the season has been no fluke.

It all started on Friday night, and after the South Sydney Rabbitohs put a big score on the Bulldogs, many thought it would be a procession for the North Queensland Cowboys when playing host to an understrength Dolphins side in Townsville.

The visitors started hot and maintained that throughout to open up a big lead at half time, and they kept it going in the second to pick up their fourth win of the year. They are starting to make a lot of teams take note, and while many thought they would be an easy two points and treated like a second bye, the Dolphins have certainly proved many wrong.

Then on Saturday it was time for the competition’s hottest team, the Brisbane Broncos to strut their stuff in front of another big crowd at Suncorp Stadium, but it was the Canberra Raiders who played the role of party poopers.

The green machine blitzed the Broncos early and held a solid lead for much of the game, before a late comeback almost threatened to derail a much-needed win.

With the final minutes winding down and Brisbane trailing by four, Jordan Rapana was accidentally clipped on the end by Marty Taupau as he dived to catch a bomb, causing a gruesome scene and dropping the ball.

Controversially the bunker determined the act illegal, with the Raiders getting a penalty that would ultimately seal the game.

It raises the question of are accidents allowed in the game anymore, particularly as most of the league community tries to figure out what a hip drop is and what isn’t.

This weekend kicks off with a blockbuster between the Dolphins and the Rabbitohs, as the master Wayne Bennett comes up against his apprentice Jason Demetriou.

It’s not the only big Queensland clash, with the Titans playing host to the Broncos on the Gold Coast, with both teams starting the year well and well in contention for the finals at this early stage of proceedings.

The Long Paddock with Gerard Walsh

The word about the weather two months ago wasn’t for a wet autumn but that is what has eventuated.

It is hard to be disappointed but we did miss out on our farm at Greymare late last week when there was 12mm at our place and 37mm five kilometres down the road.

The afternoon storm which brought 12mm to 14mm hit our farm but we missed the rain later in the night.

But I am not going to complain after 76mm a couple of weeks ago.

I would admit we probably had a few too many cattle on our farm for a dry autumn but no worries now.

As a neighbour said to me the other day, we are right for winter.

The biggest concern is the drop in the cattle market.

It has dropped across the board after we only

had the high prices for a couple of years.

Prices are far from an all-time low but certainly well back on the peak.

We bought 19 Friesian steers as a bit of a longterm investment late last year and a present we would struggle to get what we paid for them.

So we will have to stick with the long-term bit to make some money.

We are about to notice the biggest drop in cattle prices when we take some of our weaners to the Warwick Saleyards, last year some of them made $1500, this year the odds are our prices will be in the hundreds.

Old times

You only have to look around a farm and see how they constructed buildings a hundred years ago.

At our farm, one of our old buildings is the slab car garage which has stood the test of time.

My guess is that is 80 years old and only for a

JOKE OF THE WEEK

corner post sinking is almost as good as when it was built.

Amazing when you think about it how all the slabs were cut by two men with a cross cut saw. Now cross cut saws.

Mr. and Mrs. Brown had two sons. One was named Mind Your Own Business & the other was named Trouble. One day the two boys decided to play hide and seek. Trouble hid while Mind Your Own Business counted to one hundred. Mind Your Own Business began looking for his brother behind garbage cans and bushes. Then he started looking in and under cars until a police man approached him and asked, "What are you doing?" "Playing a game," the boy replied. "What is your name?" the officer questioned. "Mind Your Own Business." Furious the policeman inquired, "Are you looking for trouble?!" The boy replied, "Why, yes."

Sport Steketee's top season

Continued from page 1...

“There was tight security and I just trained with the team,” he said. “It was great to be part of the squad as we won the series, it was special to take it all in.

“The Australian team is so diligent with their cricket. They are one of the best teams in the world, if not the best, for a reason. You hear them talking tactics.”

Some of the series highlights Mark saw from close range were a five-wicket bag by captain Pat Cummins and Usman Khawaja batting for 160, saying, “Spinner Nathan Lyon was awesome.”

The Bulls finished third in the Marsh Sheffield Shield competition in 2022-2023 with Mark rating the season as one of his best, saying, “I think I

bowled well in all conditions."

He had a few niggling injuries in the BBL season after starting the one-day season well, saying, “I didn’t take as many wickets in the one-day season as I would have liked."

Mark's batting came good at the end of the season when he helped Jimmy Pearson to a Bull's century with a crucial partnership and then put on 50-run partnerships with the tail to get two Queensland innings to decent totals.

He hopes to be back with the Bulls next season and share in a Marsh Sheffield Shield win after missing one final win with injury and then being 12th man for another.

“I want to play for the Bulls for a few more years,” he said.

As for Australian representation, Mark said all he could do

was to keep bowling well and hope the opportunities come.

Asked which players he spent the most time with on tour, the Warwick paceman said “anyone who plays golf, likes fishing or having a beer I hang out with.

During a short break from cricket, Mark will be at home in Brisbane with partner Jordon and seven-month-old daughter Andie.

“Andie is fun to be around. Jordon has been great with Andie as I have been away for three or four months of her life so far,” he said.

When Mark played county cricket last year, Jordon spent three weeks in England with him and he hopes all three came make it this year if he goes abroard.

SportWolves unbeaten

The Warwick Wolves football men’s team is unbeaten after the first four weeks of the Darling Downs/ Toowoomba first-division season.

The Wolves wins have been 2-1 against West

Wanderers, 1-0 versus South Toowoomba Hawks, 3-0 in the clash with Chinchilla and 4-0 against USQ.

Club registrar Rob Davey said the win against USQ was the best so far.

“They were the most competitive team we played and we took our chances,” Davey said.

Alex Newley has been one of the team’s best all season with his strong

defence in his first full season in the men’s competition.

Former New Zealand A League player Brandyn Piere scored two goals against USQ in his first season for the Wolves.

Others to score two goals this season are Matt Spence, Matthew Carey and Saxon Charles with Rob Davey and Shannon Cameron scoring one each.

Warriors chasing victory

Rugby league returns to Clifton’s Platz Oval on Sunday April 16 when local heroes the Wattles Warriors take the field against Toowoomba’s Southern Suburbs Tigers.

Given the Tigers are not fielding an Under 19 team in this 2023

Toowoomba Rugby League season, the program will consist of just two games being Reserve and A Grade.

Wattles ‘Stillwater Pastoral Company’ open line up have yet to post a positive result as the TRL season opens, a situation Coach Travis Burns wants to see addressed this weekend.

A 16 – 4 loss in atrocious weather conditions in the Barrett Family Shield to arch rivals Warwick followed by a hard fought 35 - 28 loss against Dalby in the initial TRL round has Burns keen to have his side back on the winner’s podium.

With the Barrett Family Shield heading Warwick’s way and the Rod Frahm Memorial Cup reinstalled in Dalby, the Platz Oval trophy cabinet has some vacant space.

Wattles line up has certainly

suffered some losses from the premiership winning combination of last year, but the coach feels his team can built into a force to be reckoned with on the back of talent, experience and youth.

Sunday’s contest with the Tigers will be the Warriors first outing approaching full strength.

The green and gold forward pack should make an impact in their first home game of the year, the return to the paddock of skipper Ty Gardner and addition of new faces, former Highfields Eagles forwards Jacob Mouatt and Jacob Leech, along with front-rower Noah Dwyer recruited from Valleys.

Burns will have star premiership winning forward Jordan Crocker back in action to add class to Wattles pack, however former Brisbane Broncos National Youth Cup backrower Brendan McBride is still a non-starter.

Wattles certainly have size, mobility and nous in the engine room, and add home grown book end Mitchell Duff in the mix.

While only two matches into the season lock forward Nick Van Der Poel is the Warriors most consistent performer, his ‘never say die’ attitude, experience and passion will contribute considerably to his team’s 2023 season campaign.

Five-eight Tom Morris was Wattles best on field against the Dalby Diehards and is developing a capable halves combination with Brayden Paix.

Morris and Paix have big shoes to fill after the Matt Duggan/ Travis Burns duo of recent seasons, but they have hit the ground running and impressed their coach in their initial two games.

“They are both handy playmakers, our speed and ability in our threequarters outside them will

benefit and hopefully reap plenty of points,” said Burns.

While Stevens brothers Tyson and Zac have been mainstays in Wattles pack, cousin and premiership winning hooker Ryan Stevens is again an absentee against the Tigers.

Centre threequarter on the rise Lachlan Henry missed the large majority of the Dalby clash after a head knock, but he will take his place on Sunday fully fit.

Reserve Grade

The ‘Tony Morris Tiling’ Wattles reserve grade side are focused on a third successive win in what has been a shining opening to their season.

The Warriors nailed Warwick in a storm shortened match 18 – 10, and the following week accounted for Dalby 20 – 10 in a convincing result.

Coach Tony Morris couldn’t be happier with team performance and results to date.

His Warriors also still have some quality players in contention to return to the reserve grade lineup as the A Grade side takes shape.

It’s been a consolidated effort by Morris’ outfit, keeping the game simple, executing the game plane and limiting errors.

With the experience of veteran campaigners of the calibre of Tim Hentschel and Aaron Scheid, along with skipper Jordan Henry and Garth Lonergan and string of talented youth, the Warriors have taken the first vital steps towards another Grand Final appearance.

Astableford event was on the programme for Stanthorpe golfers last Saturday, April 8, the day sponsored by club member, Simon Shannon who travelled from Brisbane to be in attendance on the day. Thanks to Simon for the day, it was appreciated by all.

A good field of local players plus a number of visitors for the Easter break turned up, not too worried by the rather strong breeze that blew throughout the day.

Scores were again either very good or ‘could do better’ but the early morning players seemed to have the better of the day with the men’s winner, David Burgess being one of the am players. His 40 points for the round was best by two points over the rest.

Runner up went to Mark McCosker with 38 points, although he had to wait for the count back to claim the spot. The ladies found the going tough, with the wind and slow fairways making scoring difficult. Best on the day was Lisa Stuart with 30 points, just ahead of Margie Locke who settled for runner up on 28 points. Both players also collected pin shots, Margie had best approach at 12 and Lisa likewise at 17.

Men’s pin shots were claimed by Mark McCosker at 3, Nathan Stibbard at 12 and Alex Vale successful at 17. Pro-pins were won by Trevor Wren, a good second shot at 1/10 and the Burgess family winning the rest. Andy at 5/14 and David at 9/18. The birdies nest at hole 3, a par three hole, was not claimed.

In the run down, scores of 36 and better were rewarded with Nathan Eccles from City Golf on 38 points, Hamish Adam (37),

Next Saturday (15 April) is another single stableford, this day to be sponsored by Go Vita Stanthorpe, thanks to John Byliki. Last year’s Go Vita golf day was a huge success and all who played enjoyed the day. Hopefully another good field for this day also. The time sheet is on the board at the club. See all on the fairways next Saturday.

On Wednesday April 5, a good field of ladies took to the fairways to contest the Churches of Christ sponsored Single Stroke Event.

Congratulations goes to Anna Cox, who took line honours surviving a countback from Roslyn Darton, Judy Lester, and Melanie McLennan all with 71 nett. Roslyn being the Runner up for the day. It was a great day for golf, but the wind made the conditions hard for everyone.

Melanie took out the front 9, but had to play 3 under par to win on a countback from Wendy Rhea. There was a few gobbles out there as well, Trish on the 2nd, Melanie on the 3rd and 4th, Di Evans on the 5th, Judy on the 7th, Sharron Cooper on the 9th, Carole Brandon on the 10th, and Di Johnstone on the 18th. Awesome work Ladies, it looks like you all had a great day out. Our clever winners for the day

received vouchers from One Table Café & Function Centre, where Noo and her staff no doubt will take very good care of you, with coffee, delicious food, and scrumptious cakes.

We will all be out at One Table Café for our Support our Sponsors luncheon this week, and no doubt we will all have a great time.

On Saturday April 8, our Lady golfers played a Single Stableford. Kath Morrison has found her way up to the golf club again, (I think she forget the directions for a little while there), and is finding her

form. Kath took our the first prize with 32 points, from Lois Wilson with 31. Annice Payne took out the Pro pin for the day, 650mm’s from the hole. The course was very heavy, and the ladies did very well to return the scores they did with the water laying around the course from the heavy deluge on Friday night.

On Saturday April 15 we will be playing the Single Handicap Matchplay Qualifying Round. This will be a stroke event, sponsored by The Little Gallery. and the top qualifiers will play matchplay format over 3 more

rounds, to reach the eventual winner. This is always a great event, an honour board event that is always hotly contested.

Sunday April 16 will be the quarter finals of the Single Handicap Matchplay, with the top 8 qualifiers from Saturdays event playing matchplay. Please take note that this will be played from the Match Index on the card, not the stroke index. The winners of Sundays event will play in the Semi Finals on Saturday April 22, and the Finals on Sunday April 23.

Wednesday April 19 we will be

playing the 9/18 hole Style shoes

Single Stableford. This is always a hotly contested event, as who doesn’t love the range of shoes

Melanie has at Style Shoes!!

Thankyou Melanie for your continued support of Warwick Women’s Golf, you know we all appreciate your continued sponsorship.

With all the rain that we have been having, please make sure that you keep your golf carts to the side of the fairways to limit damage to the course. Our course has reached it’s maximum amount of absorption, hence the water is sitting everywhere. Walkers are fine, but carts please stay to the edges and the rough please. Anyway Ladies, until next week, we hope that you continue to hit that little white ball straight up the middle of the fairways of the beautiful Warwick Golf Club.

After last week's washout things got back into the swing on things on Wednesday April 5.

Mike Hosking kept up his latest good form and took the Easter Chocolates with another 66 nett,

Mikle is hoping his current purple patch can continue for another few weeks.

"Chainsaw"Al Matthews was unable to cut Mike down and took the runner up spot with a nett 68.

Cec Watts also continued his good form of late and lead the run down winners with a nett 69, next were Bob Lester and Wayne Foster on nett 70.

A popular nett 71 seen Herb Bownds, Bryan Slattery, Ian Skillen, Ross Kingston, Josh Manwaring, Mark Thomas, Brett Sturgess and Darrell Bain collect a ball each and Rob Farrell rounded things out with a nett 72 on a countback.

Despite having trouble with the metric system onthe Pro Pin 13th Rob Farrell collected $30. Mark Coote won $20 and Cec Watts

$10.

Nearest the pins were:- 5th Mark Thomas, 7th Josh Manwaring 9th A Skinner, 11th Bill Morrison and 16th Josh Manwaring.

A reminder that the Sporter's "Shoot-Out" is an upfront payment of $40 payable at the Pro Shop, there will be two receipts printed, one you keep the other will be held by the pro shop to

confirm your entry. Your scores will not be counted until you are financial and your best 10 scores will be counted with the final game being the last Wednesday in Februarty 2024 A minor snafu may have seen the shoot-out entries closing by the end of April 2023 but this is not so. Entry can be made up until December 27 (10 weeks prior to the close February 28).
