Emu Swamp EIS lapsed, will the dam go ahead?
Jonathan O’Neill oneill.jonathan1@outlook.com
The controversial Emu Swamp Dam has hit another road block, with the CoordinatorGeneral’s evaluation report of the environmental impact statement (EIS), having lapsed on April 1.
The Coordinator-General’s report on the EIS for 12,000
megalitre irrigation dam on the Severn River, 15km south west of Stanthorpe was initially released in September 2014, with the initial lapse date of April 1 2022, being extended an additional twelve months.
Member for the Southern Downs, James Lister submitted a Question on Notice to the state parliament on Thursday March 30 regarding the Granite Belt Irrigation Project.
The question to the Minister
for Regional Development and Manufacturing and Minister for Water, Glenn Butcher asked, “What the Palaszczuk Government will do to compel SunWater to engage with Emu Swamp Dam and to avoid the expiry of approvals until such time as the outcome of the Regional Water Assessment is known?”
The Member for Southern Downs told The Town & Country Journal that SunWater
have been stalling on answering questions regarding the Regional Water Assessment.
Mr Lister said that the inaction by SunWater risked the expiry of valuable hard won approvals before the project proceeds and that the dam operator has resisted engagement with Emu Swamp Dam.

Lang Park or Suncorp Stadium?
Thanks to Darryl Chapman who wrote to us about my quip of the ABC referring to the decade's-changed "Lang Park" title being used instead of Suncorp Stadium when The Broncos played The Dolphins recently.
He said, "The ABC never refers to any sports ground/stadium by its corporate name. ABC will never refer to Lang Park as Suncorp Stadium, just as they never refer to AAMI, ACCOR, Bankwest, etc. It is ABC policy not being a commercial entity." Agreed to an extent but I queried with Darryl that the ABC will refer to some corporate names in their reporting and he further said: "Yes, the ABC has done live broadcasts from the Wellcamp airport promoting Wagners which is purely commercial. Macca on Sunday mornings is the only ABC personality that does his own thing."
Thanks to Darryl who is also paying attention and the bottom line for him was that Lang Park "will always be Lang Park". Am sure others can relate. (SV)
Vending machines with healthier options
Well, there you go, we were in a Toowoomba Hospital this week and noticed that the sugar of vending machines was lacking, as well as the more traditional crisps that were gone by the wayside. Not a complaint at all when Master Nine asked for popcorn instead. A nurse happened to comment that she "often has to direct patients to where they can find 'real Coke'" as the most constant question she hears. A good move for our hospitals. (SV)
Elections on policy!
What's next?
In the last couple of weeks we've had a couple of really strange elections in Australia. We had the NSW election which has gone down as one of the most civil in history, with both sides (let's not talk about Mark Latham...he's not so much a 'side' as a 'sideshow') campaigning on deep intake of breath) issues! Policy. ... and then the Aston by-election, proving that Australia is undergoing a sharp shift to Labor at the moment. With a Liberal state MP attending an anti-trans protest in the company of some people who think they are Nazis, our own Federal MP said that the Liberal brand was having a moment...but he pointed to the NSW poll and contrasted it with the character-focused campaign to the south, including attacks on opposition leader Peter Dutton. The by-election may have advanced Labor's cause, but it hadn't "advanced the narrative of federal politics" Mr LIttleproud said, continuing to sound a note I rather like - one that we have to lift politics up a few rungs on the moral and behavioural ladder. A 33-year-old woman has been charged with the “Unlawful use of stock” after stealing two horses she and her ex-partner sold for $8,200.
The horses were sold to the man in 2019, one horse, a mare, being valued at $7,000.
At some point following the transaction, the woman and her ex-partner had stolen the horses, and a complaint was made to the police.
In 2020, the ex-partner voluntarily went to the police, and told officers that the horses were located on a property in NSW, a location which neither he or the defendant were willing to divulge.
The defendant’s partner in crime was fined $8,200 for the crime, the exact amount of the horse selling price, which Magistrate Victoria Sturgess said “was fair.”
Magistrate Sturgess added, “Fines and sentences are high
for these crimes, as stock is considered valuable.”
The woman kept the horses on the property for four years, until police discovered her location and were granted a warrant to search the property, allowing them to seize the
horses.
In that time, the woman had reportedly made some amendments with the victim, as he sold her back one of the horses for $3,000.
The victim has reportedly been returned one of the
horses, which is now 12 years old.
The woman was fined $5,000, and a conviction was not recorded.

You would have seen the news of another terrible mass-shooting in a school in the USA last week. I stress the word “another” because sadly, they just seem to keep coming.
This time it was Tennessee. Next time, who knows? I hope against hope that there won’t be any more next times, but I honestly don’t have too much faith. I just don’t know why representatives don’t stand up against the gun lobby in the USA, but they won’t.
Whilst mass-shootings draw the big, world-wide media coverage, there is another brutal killer in the USA that kills innocent people at a rate exceeding gun crime. For reasons that are as equally perplexing in my opinion.
Drink Driving!
The USA has one of the worst road accident death tolls in the world. (In fact, they register as the worst of all OECD countries). Both in the sheer weight of total deaths, deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, deaths per 100,000 cars and so on. In comparison to Australia our American friends manage to kill themselves and each other on their roads at rates more than double we do on ours.
Considering studies show that around half of those deaths are attributed to drivers with alcohol in
their systems, well, you can start to see the correlation.
But why? Why can’t the police in the USA just start pulling people over, breath testing them and taking their licences off them? The same as our police do here? Well, it has to do with the complexities of the laws they deal with. If you’ve watched any legal drama tv shows or movies from there I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. Probable cause, reasonable suspicion and all that malarky means that American police can’t just pull up anyone they like and stick a roadside breath testing device in their mouth like our Aussie Police can. Hence the horrendous numbers of drink drivers and subsequent related accidents.
If you like, get on Youtube and search for body cam footage of actual drink driving stops. They go on for 20 minutes or so. Doing all sorts of checks of the driver to determine if there is a reasonable suspicion that they can then breath test them. These field sobriety tests include walking a straight line, oneleg stand-test and the “horizontal gaze nystagmus” test. (An examination of eye movement that shows intoxication.)
All in all these tests take from 10 to 20 minutes or more to complete, Certainly a lot longer than the 30 seconds or so it takes one of our Aussie people in blue to do a “breath-o.” I just can’t for the life of me see the Americans setting up booze buses any time soon.
Don’t get me wrong, I do love our friends in “the Land of the Free.” After all, they gave us things like muscle cars, KFC and NASCAR. I just think that when I travel there, I’ll get around by helicopter and stay off the interstate.

It was interesting to read former mayor Tracy Dobie’s comments about the impact of the closure of physical newspapers such as the Warwick Daily News on country towns (see picture). The ABC spoke to Ms Dobie as well as the former editor of the Mandurah Mail (a West Australian newspaper that is about to close after being published continuously for….well I think the technical term is ‘yonks’). The two women put the view that the closure of newspapers like the Daily News have allowed substitutes to fill their empty shoes…and those substitutes are TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn…Telegram, Instagram….I can’t keep up. We’re humans. We need information almost as much as we need oxygen, water and calories. Our emotional attachment with our phones is because they drip feed us the sweet sugar of information, good calories, bad calories, raw sugar and the processed variety. This attachment to the telephone started many decades ago, but in those days it was attached to our ears. Now it’s snuck around from our ears, and has attached itself to our eyes, and sits there, even more compelling now because we don’t need language to understand what it’s trying to say.
If I had to pick a single thing I don’t like about online media, it isn’t just that everyone is handed a megaphone and allowed to tell as many people as they can whatever they want. In fact what really has gone wrong predates people discovering the hashtag, and the art of getting ‘friends’

and ‘followers’ to listen to their unfiltered thoughts and look at their highly filtered pictures.
It's actually the newspapers fault, in a sense. It all went downhill when standard newspapers like the Daily News and The Courier Mail put their news online, and people started clicking on stories. That was the day that the media discovered that what we, the people, wanted was not three serves of vegetables, but sugar sugar sugar.
So open a physical copy of The Australian now and when I first started reading it, and you’ll see the two don’t resemble each other. It’s not just the design that’s changed, or the news that’s changed. Then, the pages were filled with news from around the world, and one page for opinion and letters to the editor. Now the pages are filled with the ‘hot takes’ of commentators. Thanks to the internet, newspapers are increasingly giving people what they want, rather than the news we really need to know. Why do we need to know anything? Because apart from loving information like sugar, we need accurate complete information, information we don’t want to know just as much as information we do want to know. We’re humans. We have the ability to see the future. But the phone in our hand is increasingly becoming a mirror for our brain, feeding us what we want to see, again and again.

Recycle Easter egg wrappers?
Jonathan O’Neill oneill.jonathan1@outlook.com
This time of year can be a very exciting one for the whole family, a chance to put your feet up, maybe adventure out for a long weekend of camping, and sink your teeth into some delicious Easter eggs.
But with all that foil wrappings left over, there’s a dilemma… can they be recycled?
Your first thought might be that they can, it’s just aluminium foil after all… but the answer isn’t that simple.
Southern Downs Regional Council Waste Management Officer, Eva Norton says that small pieces of recyclable materials can not be recycled on their own.
“The way our recycling machines work, small pieces just get blown away… so you need to hoard all the wrappers together and put them into a bundle
amount the size of a fist or a credit card, but with some bulk,” Ms Norton said.
“It’s got to have a bit more bulk than just being one sheet so that it doesn’t just blow off with the materi al separators… and if it’s flattened out, it need to be big enough for the sensor to see it… it’s not about necessarily having a ball”.
As always, if the choco late comes in a cardboard box, that can be recycled, but must be separated from the wrappings.
The machines used to manage the recycling have many different magnets, trommels and crushers to differentiate what materials are and the method needed to recycle them.
“Plastic bags are a big problem… the machine confuses them for cardboard, so when the machine blows them out of
the way thinking it’s cardboard, it’s actually a plastic bag which then causes massive issues”.
“Everything stops… it’s like Styrofoam blowing everywhere”.
The Southern Downs Waste Management team said that after enjoying a couple of beverages, it is possible to place all of
Find yo next advent e in the South n Downs
the containers (cans or bottles) into a box and place that in the recycling bin, as long as the box isn’t sealed shut.
To overcome the issue of having small bits and pieces, such as bread clips, that may cause issues for the machinery, Eva Norton suggests putting them inside a cereal box or a jar with a lid and closing it.
Yes, you can recycle bottles and jars with lids on them.
“We have a different system to containers for change, and we can accept bottles with lids on them,” Ms Norton said.
But unfortunately, when it comes to takeaway coffee cups, the lid is the only component that can be recycled in the Southern Downs.
“Our material recovery facility doesn’t take coffee cups… take the lid off, they can be recy-
cled… but not the coffee cups”.
“It’s got multiple layers of stuff in there and a waxy coating to keep them waterproof”.
“There are certain material recovery facilities that can take them, but it’s a lot more expensive for them to do it, because of the different layers of cardboard and the inner layer of wax”.
“When something goes through as plastic, they wet it and then chop it up… and if you’ve got plastic or wax in there, it just gums everything up and it’s expensive”.
“Not many of the material recovery facilities have the technology to separate the plastic out of the big lump of everything… the one that we use doesn’t”.
“It would be very exciting when and if they change that and it will be a big news story… but at this stage we can’t do it, so it just turn into contamination at this point."

“The school holidays are a great time to get out and about to explore everything that Queensland has to offer but road safety must come first,” he said. “Police are always doing their part to promote road safety and enforce road rules, and you can expect to see them anywhere, anytime.
"It is also critical that motorists prioritise their own safety on the roads. Plan your trip, take regular breaks, share the driving, and ensure everyone is buckled up.
“If you see police officers out and about over the break, remember they’re sacrificing time with their own families to make sure that you and yours get home safely."
Acting Assistant Commissioner Chris Stream reiterated the advice and said that drugs, alcohol and speeding are contributors that police will be looking out for.
“Day or night, ensure you drive to the conditions. Don’t speed or drive affected by drugs or alcohol," Mr Steam said.

cantly reduce fatal crashes if motorists avoid the fatal five behaviours: speeding, drink or drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, driving tired and distracted driving. Expect to see police conducting roadside operations and patrolling our roads, doing everything we can to reduce road trauma and keep Queenslanders safe.
"Getting stopped by police might be an inconvenience to you, but for us, it is often the best-case scenario when the alternative is responding to a fatal car crash. One life lost is one too many so please be careful. Every decision you make behind the wheel, counts.
“(And) remember, there is no second chance if you make a fatal decision behind the wheel."
Easter long weekend 2022 statistics included:
That one life was lost 60 injury crashes were recorded in Queensland
3,788 traffic infringements were issued
1,217 infringements were issued to speeding drivers
471 motorists were caught while
driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
Let's do our part to improve these statistics.
In Allora on Monday April 3 we asked motorists at the local petrol station about what they think of travellers in our region at Easter and heard this:
"I worry about young people on the roads, especially all the P drivers you see in Toowoomba and around. They take some risks," James said.
"It's not-too-bad through Allora, people are okay with sticking to the seventy kilometres through this stretch," Mick said.
"Night time in Warwick is full of hoons actually. There's one spot that they rev their engines and make all kinds of noise," Cindy said.
"I think that the rules for getting a licence these days are better as it's stricter. You would think the result is better drivers," Sean said.

Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
The Evacuation Centre Training on the Granite Belt were pleased to have Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi in attendance on March 29 in Stanthorpe.
"(We were) honoured to have Mayor Vic Pennisi ... talk with the trainees," a spokesperson said. "As the Chair of the Disaster Management Group, he is acutely aware of the importance of this training."
Sixteen Granite Belt locals attended and learnt "how Evac(uation) Centres operate in a disaster scenario - the people, the roles and the layout".
Those who went along were said to have brought "community knowledge and a range of key work and life skills highly relevant to disaster resilience".
The organisation were pleased to promote that they "work seamlessly" with Michelle McNeice, the local Emergency Management Coordinator Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) and SDRC Community Recovery and Resilience Officer, James Wong (pictured).
Mayor Pennisi told our papers that "evacuation is an important function that gets triggered during emergencies such as flooding or bush fires, and has many moving parts".
"Often when communications channels are down, evacuation relies on physical contact through door knocking," he said. "Having the resources to manage such events is difficult for local governments to fund and local government relies on

On March 27, police intercepted a vehicle on Flemming St, Texas, in relation to a traffic incident. A 21-year-old Warwick man is alleged to have been driving an unregistered vehicle and had never held a licence.
He was issued a notice to appear at Inglewood Magistrates Court on April 17, for unlicensed driving and an unregistered vehicle.
Between March 18 and March 23, alleged offenders entered a shed on a rural property on Arcot Road, Silver Spur, and broke into a gun safe and stole multiple rifles.

Condamine Sports Club is happy to announce the completion of its most recent renovations, the bar.
The bar has been redone with an “elegant stone top finish,” and the addition of wine on tap “which people are liking.” The renovations reportedly
took five weeks to complete, and were done through 95% local trades.
Condamine Sports Club Manager, Stephen Domjahn, is
very pleased with the changes, saying they’ve had a “lot of positive feedback, no negativity.”
These renovations are part of a three year journey for the club, which first started its revamps in 2021 to redesign the function room and the pokie area, giving these areas “more space” and a modernised feel.
The plans continued into 2022, with plans beginning in the bar to re-carpet and paint the area to make it match.
Mr Domjahn added that the renovations created more space and a cleaner atmosphere. “It feels more like a club than a pub now, but we are keeping to the history and charm of the old place, while having a nicer feel.”
Three words he would use to describe the new atmosphere, are, “elegant, friendly, and charming.”
There are reportedly “more upgrades in the pipeline” for the club.

Dear friends arrived this weekend to spend three days on the farm helping me with projects, visiting for hours around the campfire at night, and spending chilly mornings cosy in the cottage with stacks of books and numerous cups of coffee.
We worked hard in my gardens getting them weeded, covered with manure from my neighbour's horses, mulched, and ready for winter plantings.
Although I wasn't able to garden the past six months, we still found all sorts of treasures under the forest of weeds: sweet potatoes, asparagus, horseradish, leeks, sorrel, and a whole lot of
herbs. Those discoveries made me smile.
Bear built those gardens for me when I first arrived in Australia. He wanted me to have a part of the farm just for me where I could experiment and grow whatever took my fancy and heal from the pain of my past. The gardens continue to do what he intended, helping me heal through my grief, find small joys to keep me going, and invest in my future.
Today I'll start planting again, putting in the seeds that will feed me all winter long. I'll tuck fat cloves of elephant garlic in the earth, sprinkle lines of watermelon radish, chioggia beetroot, and
purple carrot seeds, and fill punnets with peas, sweet peas, and brassicas under protective mesh frames that Bear made me to keep the seeds and seedlings safe from marauding rodents and birds.
While I wait for them to grow, I'll be quick pickling carrots, beetroots, radishes, and other root veggies Skandinavian-style with caraway seeds and cumin seeds. These pickles are fast and easy to make and keep beautifully in the fridge. I love serving them with a wedge of Camembert for an afternoon pick-me-up or alongside cold roast pork or beef
for an easy lunch. Drained well, they add zesty crunch to a salad roll or toasted corned beef sandwich.
Scandinavian Quick Pickles
Ingredients:
2-3 carrots, 2-3 small beetroot, 5-6 radishes, scrubbed and trimmed
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 tsp sea salt
6 pink or black peppercorns
1/4 tsp cumin seeds or caraway seeds
Directions:
Using mandolin, thinly slice the vegetables and pack loosely into a small, clean, sterilised jar. Set aside.
In medium saucepan combine remaining ingredients and bring to boil over medium high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let cool. When cool, pour over the vegetables to cover by 1-2 cm, gently tapping jar on counter to release air bubbles.
Cover and refrigerate 2-3 days until ready to eat.

The Green foods time bomb
Cities cannot survive without refrigeration. But green policies ensure that electricity generation will become more unreliable and expensive.Wind/solar infrastructure is also sterilising farming lands, thus reducing their capacity to produce food. Now greens are promoting another food disaster - the vegetarian diet. All human ancestors were hunter-gatherers and
meat was their favoured food. When the hunt was successful, the tribe feasted before the meats spoiled. When hunters failed, tribes relied on the gatherers for ripening fruits, honey, tubers, wild onions, nuts or laboriously harvested survival foods like grains. Party foods like sugar and alcohol were more recent inventions.Politicians should not force meat lovers to pretend they are granivores with crops and gizzards, or ruminants who spend ages re-chewing their vegetarian
cuds. Intense farming, fertilisers and irrigation have swamped our food chain with grains, greens and seed oils with their unhealthy lectins, glutens, oxalates, phytic acid, harmful oils, artificial sweeteners and chemical additives and sprays. Grazing animals that once roamed grasslands are now locked in feedlots gorging on grains. Grain-dependent feedlots also produce much of our pork, salmon, prawns, chickens and eggs. Now greens are promoting denatured fake “meat” and “milks” containing zero meat or milk.Pretending humans are plant eaters has
produced an epidemic of ill health. Obesity, arthritis, heart disease, Alzheimers, leaky gut, fatty liver, dental caries, heart failure, cancers, brain fog, knee replacement, stomach stitching, caesarean deliveries, birth defects and gender confusion seem to be hall-marks of the vegan age. While human diets race off in the wrong direction, health research seeks magic bullets to generate profitsvaccines, patentable medicines, expensive surgery and genetic wizardry. The bun has swamped the meat in the “beef” burger and there is more batter and potato than seafood in “fish
and chips”. Breakfast cereals have replaced bacon and eggs, and fake “meat” and fake “milks” are lauded as healthy choices. We can see the obese results of this green food revolution waddling through supermarkets and sipping green smoothies in food courts.Green energy will prove a disaster for our economy, and green foods will be a deadly choice for our health. Future footpaths will be crowded with mobility scooters, and hospitals and care homes will be overwhelmed by unhealthy aging vegans.

All the single ladies...
For our free Town & Country Journal last week, March 30, I mistakingly wrote that the single ladies in the upcoming "Farmer Wants a Wife" series are "edible singles" instead of "eligible singles". All the eyes that proof our papers didn't notice the error either.

It's always helpful to apologise for errors but I am hopeful this one was seen for its amusement more than anything. Maybe I already have Easter feasting on the brain?

“First of its kind” is how the pilot Traprock Regenerative Agricultural Landscape Project was described at a very well attended presentation on Thursday March 30 at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism (QCWT). The event was held to present the results from the pilot, a joint project of Regen Farmers Mutual, Southern Queensland Landscapes, Granite Belt Sustainable Action Network and Carbon-eight.
Andrew Ferrier of Mallow, a member of Regen Farmers Mutual, explained that the 15-month pilot was established to see whether local farmers could access the carbon market and the anticipated biodiversity market, to generate “off-farm” income that reflects remuneration for looking after the land and improving biodiversity.
Rick Humphries of GBSAN said the recently announced safeguard mechanism will drive more opportunities in relation to the carbon market. Rick said the bipartisan support for the biodiversity 30x30 pledge now also puts a future biodiversity market on the map.
Andrew Ward of Regen Farmers Mutual thinks that the Traprock project is the most advanced project of its kind in the world. Andrew said that Regen Farmers Mutual is genuinely pioneering, not just in this area, but across Australia. He explained that the benefit of the collective model is that for small farms with high biodiversity it can take 10 years to accumulate sufficient credits. However with an aggregated model they can be cashflow positive from the start.
The pilot has developed a system of data collection and reporting that opens up opportunities to access the carbon
market. More infor mation on the farmer-owned Regen Farmers Mutual can be obtained from its website at www.regenfarmersmutual.com

following the map to low emissions
On Tuesday March 21 the Queensland government launched the Low Emissions Agriculture Roadmap together with AgForce and the Queensland Farmers Federation. The Roadmap charts a clear route for Queensland
Key areas identified in the report included livestock emissions; horticulture emissions; on-farm renewable energy and carbon farming. Actions on these areas include a plan for industry-led research into methane reduction stock feeds for livestock, industry-led support for development of green fertiliser options, exploring opportu-
Queensland Agriculture Minister Mark Furner MP said the roadmap would help Queensland agribusinesses thrive while they reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and that the aim of the roadmap is to provide a structured, smooth transition.
Queensland Farmers’
Federation CEO, Jo Sheppard said farmers need to be supported to achieve environmental outcomes whilst still being able to do what they do best in producing the world’s best food, fibre and foliage. Ms Sheppard stressed how important it was for Government to work closely with industry to achieve the goal of a viable, sustainable agriculture sector, sound environmental outcomes and stronger regional communities.
Tragic and concerning incidents
Continued from page 1...
Toddler and 50 year-old hospitalised from horse incidents
In their Sunday April 2 report, the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) outlined that a toddler was "trampled by a horse" at
Postmans Ridge. She was reportedly "transported in a stable condition with bruising and abrasions" to Toowoomba Hospital from a private property at 5.38pm on the day prior.
In the same report but unrelated, there was a notification of a 50-year-old female from Glenvale
also being "trampled by a horse" and taken with back injuries to Toowoomba Hospital from a private residence at 9.51pm.
RACQ LifeFlight needed
Also on Sunday April 2, it was reported that the Toowoombabased RACQ LifeFlight Rescue
helicopter crew flew a man to hospital "after he was seriously injured in a crash, involving a motorbike, in the Scenic Rim".
T he 70-year-old-man was believed to shear off the road and the rescue chopper was called to help at approximately 12:30pm.
Once on scene, the aeromedical
crew met with the QAS to render assistance.
"The man was treated for chest and possible head injuries before being flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious but stable condition," the report said.

2023 ROUND 6 - OVERVIEW
The run of the mighty Brisbane Broncos just continues to grow as they made it five straight wins to sit alone atop the NRL standings. While their opposition didn’t pose much of a threat, the way they were able to take care of business and push the Wests Tigers aside with such ease was very impressive. Again it was fullback Reece Walsh that led the charge with another star performance at the back, setting up multiple tries and looking dangerous every time he touched the ball. This side is playing with a lot of confidence, and they get every chance to make it six wins on the bounce when they host the Canberra Raiders on Saturday night, after they were handed a lesson of their own in a huge loss to Penrith at the weekend.
That was the only bright spot for the Queensland teams in round five, with the Dolphins suffering a hammering at the hands of St George Illawarra, and the North Queensland Cowboys going down in heartbreaking fashion to Canterbury.
The Cowboys led with less than a minute to go, before a late try to Josh Addo-Carr gave Matt Burton the chance to win the game from the sideline.
He missed, but he more than made up for it in golden point, slotting a field goal at the end of the first period to give the Bulldogs their third win of the season and keeping them in the top eight.
Both of those teams will meet on Good Friday, with the Cowboys playing host to the team based in Redcliffe.
Last weekend also saw our first draw of the season, with Manly and Newcastle unable to be split after a high-scoring affair in Mudgee.
The country faithful played witness to a brilliant spectacle, with both sides really turning it on in glorious conditions.

This weekend we see a blockbuster on Thursday with Melbourne playing host to the inform Roosters, and traditional Easter clashes with Souths taking on the Bulldogs on Friday, and Parramatta facing off with the lowly Tigers on Easter Monday.
The pressure is certainly on the Tigers and some of their players to show their fans something after a bitterly disappointing start to the current season, with some highprofile recruits unable to help them get over the line just yet.

Lizz was in the Alice
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
We've again heard from our intrepid traveller Lizz Hills, who was in Stanthorpe only a few short months ago and is now past her "halfway point" of Alice Springs.
The teacher and environmental advocate has walked "from coast-to-coast" with her team, on an 8 million-step expedition from Queensland's Rathdowney to Kalbarri in Western Australia.
Called Trek2Reconnect,
the journey aims to raise awareness of the environmental challenges faced "and create community-led conversations about how to solve them".
Lizz said that for some Australians, environmental issues are abstract, adding, “Many feel that these are problems for the government to solve. Others, however, know too well that our planet is struggling, but the issues feel too overwhelming to face.
“The effects of devastating fires and floods over the last decade have had a profound impact not just on our planet, but also on our
communities’ mental health.”
With the help of her support crew, Lizz will visit 32 towns and 24 Aboriginal Nations as part of Trek2Reconnect. Along the way, she’ll run immersive learning programs at dozens of regional schools.
With a goal of increasing awareness of (and developing solutions for) our nation’s environmental challenges, Trek2Reconnect has already raised over $51,000 to help support Australian school students vision a positive future and take action locally.
“I want to bring the prac-
tical tools from our Wild Mountains educational centre and stories from across Australia to inspire communities to take action,” Lizz said.
Above all, she tells us she's "still smiling" with more to be seen at https://chuffed. org/project/trek2reconnect
Wild Mountains is an environmental education centre in Queensland that has delivered hundreds of earth education workshops for young students with remarkable results. Elizabeth (Lizz) Hills (pictured) is its Program Director with studies in Environmental Psychology.

Anew local store has arrived in Warwick, with Alanna Clark taking the helm in the recently opened “AJ’s Store” located in
Rose City Shopping Centre.
The store opened Monday 27 April, with Alanna’s father, Jeff Clark, saying that they had a “really good first week. The community have been really supportive.”
Miss Clark was an employee at Sanity, which closed down a fortnight ago, she
had said to her father “This place is doing well, but it’s shutting down,” and suggested they do something with the newly opened space.
Mr Clark owns an online store “What the Pop Collectibles” and took up his daughter’s suggestion, bringing the online-only business back to a physical store.
“We find out what people are after, and we can put that on the shelves.” Mr Clark said, “We have a bit of variety. We don’t have the budget that Sanity had, but we

will build up our stock over time.”
The local, family owned and run business is planning to only stay in Rose City Shopping World for three months, before moving across the road beside Silly Solly’s, where they intend to use the bigger space to create a space for role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons.
“This is Alanna’s Store,” Mr Clark stated, “She’s the expert on movies and the like. This is her store, we’re just along for the ride.”
They were sitting at a waterside bar and a young fisherman was describing the crayfish he had pulled up to the surface. “It was at least a metre long” he said. Those around him listening were amazed. “Well where is it” they asked.
“Oh, it busted the top off the pot and got away,” he said.
An old fisherman he had been leaning on the bar listening to the story said ”I was fishing one time and my line hooked onto an old ship’s lantern on a reef renowned for shipwrecks. When I hauled it up the lantern was still burning.” The young man eyed the old fisherman with a look of suspicion. “Fair go mate, you don’t expect us to believe that do you”.
“Well,” said the old man, “you chop half a metre off your crayfish, and I will blow the bloody candle out.”

A New Direction opens at Artworks

Gail McCaffery’s exhibition at Artworks in the Ann-Marie O’Callaghan Gallery is the culmination of an artistic journey of many years.
The exhibition opened on Saturday afternoon, April 1, with Gail’s close friend and fellow artist Lindsay Muir using a unique method to present her artistic journey as he "interviewed" Gail, getting her to relate her story and experiences.
This lovely presentation was prefaced by Mary Findlay’s introduction of the artwork on display in the Station Café. These works are the result of three workshops held at Artworks specifically for clients of Granite Belt Support Services (GBSS).
Mary spoke of the important relationship between GBSS and Artworks and how the initiative of Art on Davadi which began in the now Aldi site, was the genesis for Artworks now placed in the station.
The three workshops were guided by artists Roz Wilson in Watercolour, Louise Jenkins in
etching, and Patti Moxham in pottery and nine of GBSS clients took part to produce the display we can now enjoy for the next two weeks.
Gail’s story was an inspiration as she related her efforts to master first pottery, and then when illness prevented her continuing in this field, took up and mastered pastel painting to produce the engaging and beautiful works on display in ‘New Directions’.
Gail explained her love of the art nouveau and its shapely lines – evidenced by her depiction of human forms and face which hold so much within their depths.
‘New Directions’ is on display until June 11. The Heritage Station Café and gallery is open every weekend from 9am-2pm.
Artworks is staffed completely by volunteers and often trains folk in customer service and café duties, there is also a garden division managed by Barbara Bowyer, who have reclaimed the neglected part of the precinct on Davadi Street which now hosts games and, occasionally weddings.

Funding for Warwick's pedestrians
Contributed
In response to community concerns about pedestrian safety, Southern Downs Regional Council has secured $1.33 million of additional funding to improve busy Warwick CBD pedestrian crossings.
This additional funding was obtained under the Australian Government’s Black Spot program and it will be administered by the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Council is currently progressing the details required to enable the commencement of works that will provide a consistent approach to the CBD road environment by improving safety for all road users at roundabouts and intersections.
Director Infrastructure Services Gary Murphy said that now the financial shortfall to fund the project had been filled, designs and approvals can move forward with certainty.
“Council’s comprehensive roads maintenance program is a significant body of work that
needs to accommodate the repair, maintenance and review of the region’s 3,000 km long road network as well as 56 bridges, amongst other road assets,” he said.
“With important funding now secured for the Warwick CBD Black Spot project, without additional expense to the rate-
payer, Council can now progress and finalise design work before construction can begin.
”A CBD project of this nature is contingent on lead times associated with Ergon lighting designs and approval as well as Council resources to accommodate the project in the works schedule of planning and con-
struction.
“Encouragingly, designs and approvals are already in train and Council anticipates that we will start to see some initial works as early as this calendar year, weather permitting."
Progress on works: Designs for all the rounda-
bouts and crossings are progressing and anticipated to be completed by mid-2023. Designs are being undertaken utilising a combination of internal and external resources.
Comprehensive street lighting designs will be submitted to Ergon for approval on completion of designs.
Construction and delivery methodology shall be reviewed on completion of designs and external approval processes to ensure minimal impact to residents, businesses, road users and pedestrians. It is likely that all works shall be constructed outside of daylight hours to minimise disruption.
A detailed construction plan shall be prepared for the delivery of the crossings and delivery dates will be confirmed in due course but it is anticipated the works will be completed prior to the end of June 2024.
Previous Black Spot projects have included safety works such as improving sight distances, improving curves and removing road side hazards.
More on this in our papers as it comes to hand.
Feedback sought on "black spot"
SDRC

Southern Downs Regional Council is seeking community feedback on the preliminary plan to address safety issues at a notorious black spot on the intersection of Willi Street and Glen Road, Warwick.
Community members have expressed concerns that although road line-marking and signage indicates that traffic travelling south-east on Willi Street is required to give way to traffic travelling east along Glen Road, there is the possibility of confusion due to the Y-shaped intersection.
Council has received funding through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program to improve safety at the intersection by diverting traffic through Tooth Street.
Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Gary Murphy said that Council has a comprehensive program of road works and the Black Spot Program is a vital component to
ensure the most hazardous roads are targeted for improvement without expense to the ratepayer.
“Council is dedicated to addressing dangerous roads and intersections as part of its ongoing commitment to road safety
and improving the liveability of the region,” Mr Murphy said.
“Every year, Council targets dangerous black spots for upgrades to improve road safety and the community has expressed its concerns about the impaired visibility at Willi Street
and Glen Road intersection.
“With black spot funding secured, Council is now seeking feedback from the community on the proposed plan to change the road conditions to create a cul-de-sac at the Glen Road end of Willi Street and make the
area safe for all road users.
“Upgrades of identified black spots on the Southern Downs also creates jobs for locals through construction and industry contracts and Council is all about the means to support our community and regional economy.”
Black Spot projects that meet the Government’s funding criteria include safety works such as improving sight distances, improving curves, removing road side hazards, increasing safety at intersections and providing protection to pedestrians.
The Australian Government’s Black Spot Program is funded through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications and is administered through the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads.
The community is invited to provide feedback before 5pm on Friday 28 April 2023 through the form on Council’s website at https://www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/ living-here/have-your-say

Dalby diehards hoist Rod Frahm Cup
Continued from back page...
Dalby lock forward Xander
Dunemann in the 51st minute and ‘Player of the Match’ Chris Woodbridge in the 57th minute crossed for touchdowns to advance the home side lead to 28 – 16.
Almost immediately Diehards experienced skipper Steve Franciscus off loaded to send Ryan Welsh away to score advancing their lead to 34-16 with 20 minutes remaining.
All was not lost for those in green and gold with Tyson Stevens and Ty Gardner in his debut game as Wattles captain claiming tries to ease within six points of their opponents.
The scoreboard read 34-28 with seven minutes on the match clock, but when
Woodbridge was on target with a late field goal the match was sealed 35-28 to the Diehards.
Halfback Woodbridge was outstanding for his new club, and in a new position, as were front rowers John Palavi and Tevita Folau.
Travis Burns felt his team had much of the running of the first stanza, “our defence scrambled well, but a few shortcomings and costly errors cost us, a couple of opportunist tries stood Dalby in good stead.”
“Our structure worked well, and while a loss I am reasonably happy with how we went.”
Halves Tom Morris and Brayden Paix were among Wattles better performers, as was reliable fullback Matt Christensen.

April strides on the Stanthorpe green
Aaron Simmers

The first Saturday of April was the monthly medal and putting competition for players at Stanthorpe Golf Club. A good field turned up for the day which was sponsored by club member, Richard Reardon and we thank him for the day. Looking at the scores returned, it would appear that players fell
into one of two categories, either quite good or struggle street.
Best score for the men’s division came from Ivan Juriss who had the low nett score, and winning score, of 68 nett. His back nine was very solid, 38 hits for that nine. Shawn Yates also had a good round and his nett 69 secured runner up place.
Lisa Stuart returned to the winner’s platform, leading the ladies event with a nett 76. As with the men’s comp, Lisa’s back nine was very good, a 44 for the back nine.
Christine Hood was also in the mix and her nett 78 secured runner up for the ladies.
Gross score winners went to Scott Constable (77) for the men and Lisa Stuart (90) for the ladies.
Putting honours were claimed by the day’s sponsor, Richard Reardon and Christine Hood for the ladies.
Men’s pin shots were claimed by Dustin Steele (Meadowbrook GC) at 3, Keith Jones at 12 and Keith Barnett at 17. No takers for the ladies at 3, Nikki
Waterworth successful at 12 and Lyn Ludlow at 17. Pro-pins were won by visitor, Dustin Steele,1/10 and Matt Waterworth claimed the others at 5/14 and 9/18. Birdies’ nest at 2 was unclaimed.
The run down went to scores of nett 75 and better for the men and nett 79 and better for the ladies.
A couple of big golf days are in the near future, at the end of the month, the club is expecting visitors from Kilcoy for their annual trip to Stanthorpe and the
next day is the ambrose event sponsored by Black Toyota of Warwick. Early warning of getting partners and teams organised for the weekend of golf.
Next Saturday (April 8) is a single stableford sponsored by club member, Simon Shannon. The timesheet is on the board at the club and tee off time from 11.30am for the afternoon session.

Dalby diehards hoist Rod Frahm Cup
Glyn Rees sports@thedailyjournal.ink
The Wattles Warriors reigning premier top graders fell short of resurrecting themselves after their recent unsuccessful Barrett Family Shield challenge against the Warwick Cowboys, losing the season opener Round 1 clash to the Dalby Diehards on Saturday evening at Dalby.
The Diehards snatched the match in the later stages 35 –28 regaining the prestigious
Rod Frahm Memorial Cup, the silverware contested annually between the two clubs.
A Wattles Club Life Member and Clifton business identity, Rod Frahm also shared a close association with Dalby rural industry.
The cup named in his honour was first contested in 2007, and since then Wattles have secured the award on seven occasions and the Diehards nine.
The ‘Stillwater Pastoral’ Warriors first minutes in the 2023 Toowoomba Rugby League fixtures saw the loss
of up-and-coming three-quarter Lachlan Henry who left the field with a game ending head knock.
Henry has been a player on the rise in recent seasons, and looks to have cemented a slot in Wattles A grade line up, with coach Travis Burns looking forward to the youthful centre back in action in the team’s next outing.
Both teams were locked at 16 all at half time, but it was the home side Diehards that took up the challenge the better for the final forty minutes.
