The Warwick Agricultural Show was a three-day fun-fuelled extravaganza with rides, local produce, animals, fireworks, live entertainment and the like for guests to enjoy last weekend.
The show had various bits and pieces for attendees to observe, including a Pet Parade (where children could show off their family animals), a Ute Show, a dinosaur exhibition, FMX stunts, and equestrian competitions.

The Warwick Potter’s Association showed off its talents with this year’s local judge Lindsay Muir, reportedly being
“really impressed” with the entrants.
“We had a really good turnout,” a representative of the Warwick Potters’ Association said, “Had a lot of entries this year.”
“He (the judge) found it really difficult to pick a winner,”the representative added, “He had to keep going back and changing his mind.”
Mr Muir is a well-known, professional potter, who’s only recently moved to the Granite Belt. His own collection of pottery creations can be found online.
Pottery entries on the day included creations of people,
animals, houses, and nature, as well as practical items like pots and plates.
The Champion of this year’s pottery competition was Roslyn Lang, for her rectangular vase.

Samoyeds were on the scene on Friday March 24, with Marnie and Romeo (show names Snowweb and Stormboy respectively), standing tall at the entrance to the Dog Obedience Club.
“Samoyeds are ancient breeds,” vereran dog trainer Lynette Harvey explained. “They were used to protect reindeer, and people used to give their babies to these dogs, who
would keep the babies warm and sometimes fed.”
Ms Harvey has been training dogs for 20 years, and says they have several Samoyed dogs at home. “Never shave a Samoyed,” she said, “Keep them cool with fans and in the shade.”
Ms Harvey’s entrant is Romeo, who at the time was attending his first show. They were scheduled to attend two more shows on the weekend.
Marnie is an Australian Grand Champion, who has been in the showdog business since 2018, and is on her way to becoming Supreme Champion.

Cowboys overwhelm Wattles in Shield win
Glyn Rees sports@thedailyjournal.ink
The Warwick Cowboys rose to the occasion on Saturday evening, March 25 at Father Ranger
Oval to overwhelm the Wattles Warriors top grade outfit and fierce weather conditions to
drive home a 16 – 4 Barrett Family Shield win in front of a very supportive home crowd.
The match was preceded by a memorial and minute silence in recognition of Warwick Cowboys Club stalwart, Denise Sullivan who passed recently.
The Shield is a bench mark for both clubs as the door opens to the Toowoomba
Rugby League premiership annually and, and on Saturday night the weather added another dimension to the usual fiercely contested contest.
It was the eighteenth Shield success for Warwick on the end of a busy pre-season that also saw them involved in trials against Marist Brothers and the Kyogle Turkeys on
their path to the premiership season kick-off on April 1 and 2. For Warwick Coach Col Speed the game was the ideal result and intensity as his charges prepare for a clash with the Highfields Eagles next Sunday at Father Ranger Oval.

Not Necessarily the News
What's in a name?
For a whole host of reasons, the correct name for anything, is important. So when poor Karina Carvalho on the ABC on Friday night, March 24, read, ongoingly that the Broncos were playing the Dolphins "at Lang
Park", this former Brisbane resident thought that surely, surely, it would be corrected to Suncorp Stadium before the next news run.
Needless to say it wasn't, and Lang Park was again named, likely because they ran exactly the same clip. If you are in the know, Lang Park was renamed Suncorp Stadium in the mid-nineties. The question is, can a newsreader
change the autocue? I can assure you they can, if it's incorrect and as simple as an incorrect name.... but really, how about them Broncos? That name is synonymous with "Brisbane" and doubt anyone can mix it up. (SV)

Voice to Parliament not supported by the Nationals
Jonathan O’Neill oneill.jonathan1@outlook.com
An election promise to seek recognition and a Voice to Parliament in our Constitution has been met with fierce opposition by the opposition.
Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese announced last week that the proposed referendum question will be, “A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve of this proposed alteration?”
Not-for-profit organisation, Reconciliation Australia say on their website, a Voice to Parliament will provide a route for Indigenous communities to help inform policy and legal decisions that impact their lives, leading to more effective results.
“Embedding a Voice in the Constitution would recognise the special place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people [have] in Australia’s history, but importantly would also mean that it can’t be shut down by successive Governments”.
But the junior party in the opposition coalition The Nationals, oppose any change to the Australian Constitution on
this front.
Leader of the National Party and Member for Maranoa, David Littleproud told The Town and Country Journal that the Voice to Parliament would undermine the core tenet of the nation, causing a divide between the First Nations Peoples and other Australians.
“What is being proposed is constitutional recognition through a mechanism that will give one race, one creed, one religion a greater say than another… that goes against the core tenet of Australia’s society and fairness,” Mr Littleproud said.
“How they want to achieve this is through a bureaucratic body that will not address the challenges of closing the gap”.
“We don’t support this, particularly as Nationals who see this through a unique lens of representing the most remote communities, where most of the disadvantage is, is from lived experience”.
“All we’re doing to close the gap and this is add another layer of bureaucracy that will add to the 1000 Indigenous groups that already give advice to governments around the country”.
“We don't need bigger bureaucracy, we need a better bureaucracy, one that empowers local communities at a local level”.
“This is about getting bureaucrats out of Canberra and into
"We don't support an Indigenous Voice to Parliament... [but we] support acknowledgement that Indigenous Australian were here first" - Leader of The National, David Littleproud
communities, designing specific programs for specific communities, and that's going to be different in Cunnamulla as it would be in Wadeye to that of Carnarvon, and thinking that we're going to keep doing the same thing we've done in the past is something that will not close the gap”.
Yanyuwa women and Labor Sentor for the Northern Territory, Malarndirri McCarthy argues that taxpayer funded programs to support Indigenous communities in the past have not worked in achieving their goal of closing the gap.
Senator McCarthy told the ABC’s Q&A panel on Monday evening that First Nations people were asking for their voice to never be cut off by successive Governments.
“In every change of government there has been a change of policy around
Aboriginal people’s lives and as a result, their lives have been turned upside down and they’ve had to start again with a new leader of a new government and then again, and again,” Sen McCarthy said.
“Even though we’ve spent millions and millions of dollars over decades trying to fix a lot of problems, something’s not working, it’s clearly not working”.
The Nationals leader argues that the proposed referendum will just be repeating the same mistakes of the of the past by putting in another layer of bureaucracy.
“It didn’t work last time… it won’t work this time… and in fact, we live with those consequences in these remote communities,” Mr Littleproud said.
“I say to those that have never been west of the Great Divide, in particular, that out into these remote communities, we come to this with genuine intent to close
the gap… but we come with this, with lived experience of knowing what will and won't work in closing the gap”.
Despite his opposition to the Voice to Parliament, Mr Littleproud told the Town and Country Journal that he supports a statement of acknowledgement that the Indigenous Australians were the first Australians and the traditional owners of the land.
“They were here first, that’s a historical fact… I don’t think any Australian is disputing that because it’s not in their Constitution,” Mr Littleproud said.
“I’m saying where you can do it is in the preamble of the Constitution… you can acknowledge that in our founding document, is that Indigenous Australians were here first, that we’re a better country having been together while having made mistakes… but if we stick together, we’ll continue to be a better country”.
“That's the solution that we say is a better one in acknowledging history, not only what is fact, but also the fact of them being here first, but the fact of that we have made mistakes, but we have been generous as a nation in trying to rectify that and to bring that disadvantage back or take away that disadvantage, I should say, where it exists… but we have achieved that in some areas”.

JobSeeker increase not enough Charges laid
Jonathan O’Neill oneill.jonathan1@outlook.com
Increases to Centrelink payments made this month, may not fully address the cost of living crisis faced by many Australians, those living in the Southern Downs with median rental prices remaining out of reach. While the increases to Centrelink payments see a marked rise in the dollar value, the indexes the Government make twice a year (March and September) only reflect the changes in inflation, without providing an increase in purchasing power.
As of March 2023, welfare payments such as the Age pension, ABSTUDY, disability support pension, carer payment and JobSeeker increased
by around 3.7 per cent, reflecting the steady rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) over the past year.
Age pension, disability support pension and carer payments saw an increase of $37.50 for a single person to a fortnightly payment of $1,064, and $28.20 per person for those who are in a partnership.
However, for those on the JobSeeker welfare program will see their payments increased to $693.10 per fortnight, an increase of $24.70.
While this increase will give minor relief to those who receive the payments, the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) argue that these increases do not go far enough and fail to address the inadequacies of income support.
ACOSS are lobbying the
Government to increase the JobSeeker payments to $76 per day, in line with the payments received by the age and disability support pensions.
“The Albanese Government must put people with the lowest incomes at the forefront of its first major budget by relieving financial stress and tackling inflation directly in a way that reduces hardship,” an ACOSS Spokesperson said in a press release.
“In the past year, living standards for people on lower incomes have been significantly eroded by the soaring costs of essentials such as food rent and energy”.
The Southern Downs is no different, with the median rental calculated by property investment firm Real Estate Investar being $350 per week for houses and $250 for units.
Miles
Southern Downs Regional Council estimate the median rental price at $265 per week, however this remains of our reach for those on JobSeeker payments.
Real Estate companies providing property management for rentals calculate the afford rental price as being one third of an applicant’s income, so for a single person receiving JobSeeker, the affordable rental price is just shy of $115 per week.
This changes in the event of a partnership, with the partner’s income affecting the payment the welfare recipient receives.
Even the ACOSS lobbied payment of $1,064 per fortnight would make rental prices unachievable for many JobSeeker recipients in the Southern Downs
"Operation Victor Decade" ensured the charging of a 26-year-old man in relation to the death of a 44-year-old male at Miles, in the Western Downs, on March 21.
Detectives allege an altercation occurred outside a Hawkins Street address, in which the 44-year-old man "was struck before falling".
Already deceased, Emergency Services attended and located the man unresponsive, before taking him to Miles Hosital for the official pronouncement of his death.
Following extensive investigations and the closure of the location as a crime scene, detectives took the 26-year-old into custody.
He was charged with one count of murder, and is expected to appear before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on March 27.

EVERYONE’S ENTITLED with Andrew Gale
Iwas having a good old chat to the bloke I am honoured to share this page with the other day. Fellow columnist Professor Olav. The esteemed editor of this paper. “The man in Yellow” just to the right of me.
Call him what you like, but I’m always up for a chat with Olav. Mostly to get some honest feedback about my writing but I also like to get the latest gossip from around the place (i.e. find out what I’ve allegedly been up to).
The main reason I chased him up the other day was because, lately, I had seen a couple of columns from him, both here and in the “Daily Journal”, lamenting about the latest conspiracy theories and how easily people seem to be influenced into that mindset. Maybe I was over-thinking it, but it seemed to be getting him down a bit. Well, that’s what I gathered from the tone of his writing, so a little check-up call was in order.
Don’t worry, he was OK. So we shared our thoughts with each other.
I’m not a big believer in conspiracy theories either to be honest. At least not the big ones that some people foam at the mouth over.
Maybe I should qualify that a bit. In my experience conspiracies do exist. 2 people sitting down to plan a house break-in for example, is a criminal conspiracy. I tell you what though, I didn’t see a lot of successful conspiracies in my time as a cop. The more
complicated and the more people involved, the faster they folded and failed. Benjamin Franklin said, ”three can only keep a secret if two of them are dead.”
I believe that. Humans are social beings. We all love a chat. Many love to gossip and very few people can really keep a secret. They just have to blab it out.
Bearing that in mind how do some of these mind-boggling conspiracy theories logistically occur? How do thousands of people keep schtum?
Look at the moon landing for example. The subject of many conspiracy theories. There were about 400,000 people involved in that project. Yeah sure, some only swept the floor, but let’s imagine 1 percent of the people involved had full security clearance and knew everything that went on. That’s 4,000 people. A tenth of one percent is still 400 people. Yeah, good luck keeping that under wraps.
One of the latest conspiracy theories is about “targeted individuals” and “gang-stalking”. People out there, maybe even some reading this, actually think the government, (in Australia that means ASIO and our police forces), are actively harassing them, in an organised way. For no real purpose other than to make those “targeted individuals” lose their mind and have others think they are crazy. For example, just driving past them in police cars when they drive or walk down the street. (Psst. It’s called patrolling)
If you don’t believe me, google it. As a former copper of some experience I find that completely absurd…… or do I ????
Because the police do target people you know. All sorts of people. Their called offenders. You know, speeders, drink drivers, car thieves, breakers and enterers, bank robbers etc. Good grief…. Don’t they think the coppers have enough to do??

My hair had grown to the point where I was learning to windscreen wipe my own face to remove obstructions when finally I settled into a barber’s chair the other day and, apparently, along with my locks, had years cut off my looks. Even vanity will not tempt me into being covered with a white tent, and knives and scissors applied to my scalp. I watched Dances with Wolves the other night, and it brought it all back to me.
But strangely enough, inserting myself like tobacco into a white tube at the Brisbane Private Hospital held few fears for me. My bad back has been bad, positively naughty in fact, the last few months, but it is I who have been punished, and now it was time for met to get my revenge, inside an MRI scanner. They asked me to strip to my underwear and wear a white gown, which of course was missing one part of the belt so I had to clutch it shut or risk my modesty. “You might get a little hot in there,” the attendant said, handing me a little squeeze toy to call if I was being boiled alive. Then she gave me some earphones and Cold as Ice came through the wires as the machine began to clickety-clack, whirr and jackhammer around me. Take that, evil back, I said silently as the jackhammers of sound began beating my torso.

I had to sign a form saying I was not claustrophobic, which was easy to sign. I’m phobic about drowning, but the
thought of dying in a packed aeroplane is positively appealing to me. I can remember one time leaving the island in Bangladesh, and every ticket north was taken because it was Ramadan or Eid, I ended up taking a ‘room’ which was a little like a dog’s kennel, not far from the prow of the ferry. I couldn’t sit upright; I could lie down, as long as I was willing to lie on some rags a dog would have rejected as beneath him. The claustrophobia didn’t get me down…just the thought of being locked inside a dog kennel if we keeled over—that bit got me. I stayed awake all night, with my backpack for a pillow, and fleas for company, ready to undo the latch and leap out at the first sign of trouble. I think that particular visit ended up in hospital as usual—dehydrated as usual due to diarrhoea. I remember the female nurses looking at me as if I was poisonous - Muslim nurses are in a bind in Bangladesh due to their strict rules about touching people of the opposite sex that they don’t know - but the male doctors were happily stroking my arm to prep it for the needle…
I am happy to report that the MRI seems to have done the trick. It’s not registered as a cure for sore backs, but I think it’s like giant rattling bottle of placebo pills, scaring spines and vertebrae into submission. I feel much better now.

Farmer David's the apple of a lucky lady's eye Tragic fall, too close to home
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
Pozieres apple grower David McMahon's parents Rosemary and Jeff said they are "pleased with the outcome" of the "Farmer Wants a Wife" show that kicks off on Channel 7 and 7Plus on Easter Monday, April 10, with their son front-and-centre.
Rosemary McMahon told our newspapers that not only are they pleased, but also that David "lives life to the fullest" and is deserving of happiness in every aspect of life.
"Since he has come home, he has taken on responsibilities in various areas, one of those being staffing," Mrs McMahon said of her son's return to the Granite Belt. "He did a good job of
sourcing labour during staff shortages during Corona Virus lock downs, which helped with the harvest of our crops."
Asked if she thinks the show will bring further tourists to the area, Mrs McMahon said, "The show will highlight various locations around Stanthorpe which may attract extra visitors."

If you are anything like me at this time of year, you're helping someone consider the Easter Bonnet parade offering. In fact, it might have been a consideration for a few weeks now, if you have had the time and inclination.
This can be quite a task, depending on the person you are advising.
Said household youngster is quite particular about what's to be adorned and so, there was no end of creating taking place over the weekend. And he had to do it on his own. Good, no complaints from me. Bring on creativity and no screens any day of the year.
Checking in, seeing there was complete silence from the room of the escapade, there were a healthy trail of pastel feathers, there were brightly-painted eggs, of course, thankfully not of the consumption-kind, and there were items from the craft box
106 Palmerin St 4661 1944
Health Centre Pharmacy 4667 0692
that I didn't even remember existed in this millennia.
But, I have one rule about anything to do with creative thinking and that is .... please, please, just for me, can we not use glitter?
Can those little tubes of so much destruction from here to oblivion please be left to go-a-sunder? "But glitter is so fun to use!" came the pleading.
Swift motherly side-swipe meant that said glitter did go-a-sunder before anyone could say Jimmy-Cricket-Isn't-aRabbit or something to that effect.
Back to the point.
As I type, said creation is almost done. There have been several interruptions but Master-Agreeing-toSunder-the-Glitter seems pleased with what he will adorn for the end of the term.
I will be the one at the parade marvelling at the creativity of children and adults alike when all those inexpensive household items can creatively come together in what is a yearly celebration of Easter colour.
Happy parading and here are some other adventures (in gray box below), probably minus the glitter because I can't imagine even resident poet Councillor Marco Gliori likes it either, that SDRC are hosting.
Hop to it... and send us your Easter Bonnet parade photos, so we can share, as well as any egg hunting that might happen to not go-a-sunder at your place.

Flo and Daphne would be proud
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
Kayleen Yates was keen to share about how the "inseparable sisters" that were her Mum Daphne and Aunty Florence - or Flo - were the inspiration for a store in their honour in Stanthorpe, opened last November.
"Both ladies were very opposite," Kayleen said. "Aunty Flo was old-fashioned and very reserved while Mum was fashion conscious and very social. One never changed, sticking with tradition, and the other embraced all things new and modern."
Kayleen, who owns the outlet with husband Rob Yates, said it is a mix of vintage and modern pieces, her husband adding to the wall of "fluid art".
By honouring the "great bond" of the Redden sisters, the couple are keeping family history alive every day, in a unique way.
The outlet supports local jewellery and keepsake makers too, why Kayleen herself is an interior design specialist.
Florence & Daphne is a must-visit, with an outside area to welcome patrons who happen to also come with book and beverage in-hand.
Opening hours are 9am to 2pm Tuesday to Friday and from 8am to midday on Saturdays.
Dr. GAL: ON THE PULSE
General Practice: Things are Changing (for the better!)
In my last bulletin I wrote of artificial intelligence and robots in Medicine not being able to replace the healing power of human interaction, compassion and care. This got me thinking about how we might instead combine human knowledge and skill with medical technologies in order to improve our patients' health and wellbeing across the human lifespan. Our team recently introduced the Butterfly IQ+, a high-tech portable ultrasound that connects directly to a smartphone or tablet device. It's not a replacement for detailed ultrasound assessment, however, the amount of information that can be gathered at the bedside is actually quite impressive. This single ultrasound probe is around 300 grams, fits in the palm of a hand, allows us to perform basic head-to-toe ultrasound, show the patient images in real-time, save pictures and videos, and send these images directly to specialist teams. In an emergency, this technology gives us the ability to send images and video to paramedics en route to transfer an unwell patient, and to the
ED doctors waiting to receive them!
This is an example of "point-of-care" technology, i.e. technology used at the time of consultation for assisting in diagnosis of acute conditions and, to a lesser degree, monitoring chronic conditions (e.g. tendon or muscle tear due to sport injury).
Such technology allows us to acquire useful clinical information immediately while we're with a patient. This avoids unnecessary referrals where they're not needed, and unnecessary delays when they are needed urgently. This technology is especially useful in facilitating accurate, comfortable placement of an IV line, improving accuracy and reducing the number of attempts required.
We've also introduced point-of-care HbA1C testing for the benefit of our diabetic patients; another example of how far this technology has come!
As your GP, I am on the pulse when it comes to innovative medical technologies. Watch this space!

Finding peace through grief
Krista Bjorn www.ramblingtart.com
It's dark and still on the farm this morning, the air damp and cool after heavy rain over the weekend.
It's finally beginning to feel like Autumn.
It's good to be writing here again, finding comfort in the familiar cadence of sharing the weekly happenings of life on our little farm.
I'm slowly making my way forward since my beloved husband Bear died in my arms in October after a brief and brutal battle with cancer. My world collapsed that day, and I needed to pull my borders in close and care for my grief-stricken self until I could find solid ground again.
Our farm has kept me going simply by requiring me to get out of bed each day and tend it. Although my heart was shattered and grief made me feel like I needed to curl up and never
leave the house again, the animals still needed to be fed, the gardens watered, and the fences mended. And those daily tasks have slowly brought me back to life.
Planting seeds, baking bread, and collecting eggs may seem minuscule and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but they're actually pretty powerful. Their simple, mindful, repetitive natures are the very things needed to soothe a broken heart, calm anxious thoughts, and remind the body what peace feels like.
This week my friend Michelle gave me boxes of apples and peaches she picked for me on her farm
outside Stanthorpe. I spent several days washing, peeling, coring, and processing them, filling my freezers with juice and fruit to be turned into all sorts of delicious and nourishing things through winter.
Standing at our sundrenched kitchen sink as I cut peaches for cobblers, pies, and jams and juiced apples for my favourite Canadian spiced apple cider, I caught myself smiling as I

remembered all the times Bear and I did these things together, visiting companionably while we worked. I don't have his physical presence with me anymore, but his spirit is with me always, cheering me on, keeping me company, and laughing when the apple juice goes rogue and splatters everywhere. Grief is hell, but it's also evidence of great love. And love is worth it.

Shirley's commitment honoured
Contributed
Allora Show Society President Shirley Cornhill’s long serving commitment to the community has been acknowledged through the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Volunteer Recognition Program.
For more than 30 years, Shirley has been "a tower of strength" in organising and overseeing show society volunteer activities and advancing infrastructure upgrades at the Allora Showgrounds.
In nominating Shirley for the award, Southern Downs Councillor Sheryl Windle said her name was synonymous with the agricultural show movement on the Southern Downs, specifically the Allora Annual Show, the Allora Show Society and Allora Showgrounds.
“Shirley is a highly respected citizen of the Allora region and across the Southern Downs, known for her devotion, loyalty, community drive and work ethic,” Councillor Windle said.
“She is very passionate about what she wants to achieve and not only selflessly
volunteers her time, but is totally committed to achieving the best outcome possible for the Allora Show Society.
“Shirley has been the driving force behind several major showground upgrades, including the construction of the new canteen facility in 1998 and the relocation of the Allora Livestock Saleyards.
“Both of these upgrades attracted significant events to the showgrounds and
opened the door for new activities and prosperity for Allora.
“Her commitment to the Allora Show Society and community can’t be questioned given her 27 years as Society President, along with two years as VicePresident in 1995 and 1996.
“In recognition of her hard work, ded-
ication and commitment to the Allora Show Society, Shirley was awarded Life Membership of the Society.
“Considered an Allora citizen who is not afraid of a challenge and doing hard work to make the community a better place, Shirley was awarded a prestigious Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellowship by the Rotary Club of Allora in 2009 despite not being a member of Rotary.
“At almost 74 years of age, Shirley’s decision to continue in her role of President of the Allora Show Society and to also offer leadership and vital voluntary service for the benefit of the community has to be commended.”

Charity visits Warwick
Staff Reports
editor@thedailyjournal.ink
There was more colour and action in Warwick yesterday, March 29 when Variety 4WD Adventure passed through as part of a six-day adventure dubbed the “ultimate feelgood charity” event.
Organisers said an estimated $120,000 in donations and spending was to be injected into regional New South Wales, our own Granite Belt and beyond for Children’s Charity.
“The Variety 4WD Adventure … takes 4WD vehicles off the bitumen and into the environment that they were built for, traversing granite outcrops, navigating river runs and chasing waterfalls, all for kids in need,” a spokesperson said.
“While taking the road less travelled, participants of this special feelgood adventure raise funds for children who are sick, experiencing disadvantage or living with a disability. The event showcases regional travel through stunning scenery, boutique accommodation, great food and wine and plenty of entertainment.”
On Sunday march 26, more than 35 4WDs hit the road in Coffs Harbour and travelled to Lamington National Park, making their way through Nymboi-Binderay National Park, Inverell Pioneer Village, Lockyer National Park, Condamine Gorge and River and 0’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. Each of the towns they stopped in overnight were said to “benefit from around $20,000 in tourism dollars.
In Warwick, the local Girl Guides received a grant of approximately $6,500 to “help their effort supporting local and remote young women living with disabilities and doing it tough following the recent droughts then flooding”.
“The grant will help provide laptops, projectors, speakers and sports equipment for the enjoyment of each and every one of its twenty-one local attendees,” a spokesperson said.
Another stop along the way will be the Glen Innes Aquatic Centre where its 150 Swim Club members will benefit from a grant from Variety.
More in The Daily Journal tomorrow.
Variety representatives were keen to give when on the road.

2023 ROUND 5 - OVERVIEW
All the talk was about the Battle for Brisbane and it most certainly didn’t disappoint. Brisbane took down the Dolphins to give the new franchise their first loss of the season in a thrilling 18-12 scoreline in front of more than 51,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium.
It was a low scoring affair for much of the contest, before a silly error let the Dolphins right back into the game and set up a grandstand finish.
The Broncos hit the front once again, before a length of the field try from Kotoni Staggs put any hopes of a comeback on ice, capping off what was a massive night for the code in Queensland.
Not far away the Brisbane Lions had their match at the Gabba, with a tick over 30,000 fans, but the television audience figures will indicate the move to bring the Dolphins in was definitely the right one.
It wasn’t the only Queensland derby to take place over the weekend, with North Queensland and Gold Coast going to war in Townsville.
It was another high quality game, with the Cowboys getting their second win of the season to end a two-game losing streak.
The Titans will be left to rue missed opportunities, as they blew a handy 8-0 lead to their northern rivals.
Elsewhere it was a touch of divine intervention from above perhaps, as South Sydney scored a famous 13-12 victory over Manly.
There was a touching moment after 13 minutes where fans applauded for the late John Sattler in what was a very touching moment, with the Rabbitohs wearing jerseys with his famous half rabbit logo, and didn’t they look great.
As for those in tipping comps, there were a couple of upsets to keep people on their toes, most notably with Parramatta getting their first win of the season in a golden point thriller over the Panthers.
In a rematch of last year’s grand final, Nathan Cleary kicked a two-point field goal to send the game to extra time, before a penalty gifted the Eels great field position, and Mitch Moses slotted the field goal to cap off a great day for him, after signing a new contract with the club. Newcastle also claimed a win against the odds for good measure, taking down Canberra after they started the second half with a three-try blitz.

Next leap across the stepping stones
Green Gals

The last fortnight has seen the Quoll Society of Australia start planting in earnest in its “Stepping Stones in the Southern Downs” project, which aims to restore habitat and expand remnant vegetation
supporting the swift parrot and regent honeyeater (and, of course, the spotted-tailed quoll) across the Southern Downs.
Paul Revie and Jessica Lovegrove-Walsh of QuollSA brought together volunteers and landowners to plant wildlife corridors and stepping stones on 15 of the 25 properties involved in the project under the $238,300 grant from the Australian Government’s Environmental Restoration
A safe place to learn and play in Maryvale
Maryvale State School on the Southern Downs is a co-educational P-6 school established back in 1913. The school has undergone numerous changes and additions over the years, including a demountable being constructed in 1969, serving as a classroom for the students. Then on 28th October last year, a new demountable was turned over to the school which students are using as a classroom. The final part of the project, a basketball court, covered walkways and turf, was completed only last
week. These new buildings have meant much to the students of Maryvale, giving them a safe place to learn and play. Well done to Maryvale State School!
Fund. An astounding 9,000 plants were put in the ground over the two weeks.
Paul says the Granite Belt, as usual, has put on perfect weather. The rain on the first weekend and follow-up rain later that week provided ideal conditions to get the plants started in their new homes. Although, while the precipitation was good for the plants, the dogged volunteers and landowners who planted 700 seedlings during the 35mm of heavy rain on 12 March did at times wish the weather was better for humans.
Paul says getting to this point in the project has been quite a challenge due to the sheer number of plants required. With the permission of participating landowners, local seed was gathered for propagation to ensure that the seedlings were well suited to the unique Granite Belt conditions. The propagation itself was done by Sarah Caldwell’s team at Mole River Nursery outside Tenterfield as well as Natura Pacific’s prison growing program.
The QuollSA team will check on the plantings over winter while they continue their research in the district. Come spring, they will have their fingers crossed for more good weather as they move on to the second group of properties.
Traprock’s Regen Farmers Mutual “great example”
Earlier this month Farmers for Climate Action launched its new report “Farming Forever: A national plan for climate change and agriculture”. The report emphasises the driving need for a
JOKE OF THE WEEK
national plan for climate change and agriculture, and outlines the key policies that can support farmers in their efforts to cut their emissions and increase farm productivity.
At the national launch, guest speaker Dr Kate Andrews of NRM Regions Australia highlighted the local traprock farmers who are involved in Regen Farmers Mutual’s carbon farming initiatives. "There’s a great example happening now", said Dr Andrews, “If you’ve got a group of farmers who individually don’t have quite enough, but together can actually work well to get a large enough size of carbon and also get the co-benefits for the environment."
The report argues that future-proofing farms can reduce national emissions and increase productivity, positioning Australia as a renewable energy superpower, ensuring food security and market accessibility, and unlocking exciting new opportunities for Australian farmers.
A further benefit of a shift to a low-emissions world would also present farmers and rural communities with drought-resistant income from carbon credits.
The Union rep was checking on the farmer who was suspected of underpaying his employees and was being introduced to the farmhands.
“This is Harry” said the farmer, “he milks the cows, and looks after the dairy and gets $200 a week with room and board.”
“And this is Mary. She cooks and does the housework and gets $130 a week with room and board.
“Fair enough so far,” said the union rep. “Is there anyone else?”
“Yes,” said the farmer. “There’s the half-wit. He works fifty hours a week and gets around $15 a week with room and board.”
“Ah, Ah,” said the rep. “I’d like to speak to him”
“You’re talking to him right now,” said the farmer.

Warwick show highlights

Her trainer and owner, Joan Webb, was very proud to be with Marnie at the Warwick Show, who was a runner up to winning Best of Breed at the Warwick Show and went on to win “Best of Breed” twice in a row at two other shows on the weekend.
“These dogs are best friends,” Lynette Harvey said. “They have a nice nature. Wonderful dogs.”
“They’re not just toys.”
The SDSR Model Train Association was proud to be at the Warwick Show to demonstrate their designs.
Secretary of the club, Al Cutmore, said that putting together model trains was more than playing with toys, it was an artform and a passion.
The club enjoy coming together to exchange building ideas and put them into action, in order to complete their large model railway projects.
One project currently underway, is a sizable layout of the Stanthorpe, Wallangarra, and Tenterfield Railway Stations,
incorporating the significant landscape in-between these locations. The final product is expected to include mountains, bridges, creeks, rivers, farms, and villages, among various other finer details.
Mr Cutmore developed an interest in his youth, when he used to catch the train to school.
He invites people from all walks of life to join the club, currently made up of 15 members.
Impressive first go
Warwick local Betty Spalding has made her mark on the local sowing society through the completion of her massive quilt, which is due to make appearances at the Ekka in Brisbane later this year.
The judge Mary Worthington was “most impressed” and decided that “nearly everything here (in the quilt) is worthy of the big shows.”
Ms Worthington is also going to take Ms Spalding’s quilt to Sydney next year, to appear at the Royal Easter Show.
“The overall quality was representative of the larger shows,” Barbara Cutmore said.
“I’ve always liked sowing,” Ms Spalding said, who explained that she first started sowing as a child with her aunt.
She was “overwhelmed and shocked” at the judge’s enthusiastic praise of her quilt.
This is the first quilt she has ever sown.
Both Mrs Cutmore and Ms Spalding are members of the Saturday Sowing Club in Warwick.
Recycled masterpiece
Local blacksmith Ray Gavin made his own shield entirely out of recycled materials.
The shield is made from flatsheet and leather, and the artwork on the front was drawn and painted entirely by hand.
He similarly also made axes, with the axe heads made completely out of recycled material, and the wood for the handles coming out of his own backyard.
He was very happy to have his shield on display at the show.

Cowboys overwhelm Wattles in Shield win
Continued from page 1...
Speed’s troops handled the abysmal conditions better than the Warriors, taking full advantage of opportunities in the slippery lightning lit conditions.
While he was happy with his players across the park, lock forward Darryl Erepia was a shining light in the Cowboys stable.
“Darryl’s talk, energy and uplifting approach added much to the Cowboys performance,” according to Coach Speed.
Erepia’s outstanding effort saw him named the recipient of the ‘Terry Doyle Memorial Medallion’ as best and fairest player.
Front-rower Tui Oloapu took the challenge to the Warriors across a busy 70-minute spell while Cowboys young guns Nick Pails, Daniel Conn and Sam Raumati served notice they will figure prominently in the season ahead.
While Wattles looked to have the best of the first half, it was the Cowboys that took a marginal 6 – 4 lead in to the half time break.
Wattles errors denied them the ability to bank their scoring opportunities throughout the game that would have given them
a vital edge.
Exciting fullback Matthew Christensen crossed for the initial try of the game to give the Warriors a lead after 24 minutes.
The home side hit back though nine minutes later after a penalty 20 metres from Wattles try line saw half back Mitch Wilson edge Warwick ahead to a 6 – 4 lead.
Coach Speed rated Cowboys strong defence as a key victory factor with the kicking game of Wilson and hooker Ben Sullivan in the atrocious conditions contributing much to an impressive result.
Tries by rampaging centre Joe Fuimaono and five-eight Harry Sullivan saw Warwick gather their winning lead of 16 – 4 with twenty minutes remaining on the match clock.
While disappointed with the loss Wattles coach Travis Burns felt his side took a lot out of the game.
Our younger brigade stepped up and stood tall with the likes of halves Tom Morris and Brayden Paix along with long striding centre Lachlan Henry impressing.
Veteran forward Aaron Scheid set the example for his younger team mates with an outstanding
effort in the engine room. New arrivals in forwards Noah Dwyer and Jacob Leech are welcome inclusions in Wattles pack while skipper on the night Nick Van Der Poel was considered Wattles player of the match.
Warwick 16 (Mitch Wilson, Joe Fuimaono, Harry Sullivan tries Nick Chapman 2 goals) defeated Wattles 4 (Matthew Christensen try)
Reserve Grade. Concerns regarding the severe thunder storm over Father Ranger Oval, saw the reserve grade trial concluded with 32 minutes to play.
Wattles Michael Marshall ran in a try after just five minutes before Braydon Wilson crossed ten minutes later to allow Wattles a 12 – 0 lead.
Warwick responded as half time approached with touchdowns by back-rower Morgan Byrne and halfback Dylan Lippi and a goal by Corey Stewart.
The Warriors took an 18 – 10

Stanthorpe golfers played their end of month 4BBB stableford last Saturday (March 25) under some ominous looking clouds overhead. Luckily, the lightning and rain came very late allowing the competition to finish. The day was sponsored by club members, John Green and Brendan McMillan and we thank them for the trophies on the day. With four teams returning the
best score, 43 points on the day, the count back was in overdrive to find the winners. Lucky for Keith and Helen Jones who had the best back nine to claim the prize. Both players shared the scoring over the eighteen holes and the only washed hole was replaced by a very good par at 6 which yielded 4 points for Helen on that hole.
Of the rest, Ron Batterham and Christine Hood managed to hold onto second place, again with a better back nine than the others. In third place was the team of Ivan Juriss and Eric Ree leaving the remaining team of Mark and Racheal Hendry to settle for the
run down on the day. Pin shots and pro-pins were doubles and singles, Brendan Barker taking two pins, 12 and 17, Nikki Waterworth taking two ladies’ pins, 12 and 17. Filomena

The Final of the Championship B Grade Singles was played last Saturday and what a fantastic Final it was between Faye Flint and Craig Thurgate. Faye couldn’t do anything wrong and led by 17-10 on the 20th End. Craig then changed the Length of the Jack and settled down to tie with Faye 18-18 on the 26th End. Faye then scored 4 on the 27th End and went on to Win 25-19. Wow what a match! Both played excellent draw bowls. RSL are the 2022/23 Jim Mitchell Shield Premiers after tight grand final victory last Saturday,
March 25. The weather held off just enough for the game to be completed.
Seeking redemption after last year's grand final loss, RSL won the toss and sent Souths in. All of Souths big guns failed to fire with the bat. It was the RSL bowlers who all did their job. Duane Lihou, showed his experience and skill to claim four wickets. Souths were all out in the 40th over for 128.
RSL still had a job to do with the bat. The weather was threatening, so everyone constantly had
the Duckworth-Lewis par score in their mind. Souths bowling lineup is relentless and they claimed a couple of wickets early on to give them some hope. But the Dowie brother stood tall. Sam's 38 and
Will's 36, put on a partnership that saw RSL home quite comfortably in the 37th over. Sam Dowie was awarded the "Keith Pickstone Memorial Shield" for player of the final.

On Saturday April 1 we will be playing our May Monthly Medal, kindly sponsored by the Condamine Sports Club. Thank
you for your great sponsorship of this hotly contested event. This game is always played off the white marker course, making it a little more challenging. Played in two divisions, and the winners will automatically qualify for the Medal of Medallist’s played later in the year.
On Wednesday April 5 we will be playing a 9/18 hole Stableford. This event is sponsored by one of our Lady sponsors, and many thanks to those who have sponsored days for us this year.
Wednesday is also Goombungee Open Day, we wish all of our travellers a safe journey, and great golf while you are there. It is so wonderful to see so many of our ladies enjoying not only the hospitality of other clubs in our districts, but playing so many other courses as well. There’s nothing like appreciation you have for your own course until you have travelled away and experienced others.
