Coronial inquiry into local death

Acoronial inquiry will be held into the death of 38-year-old disability pensioner and historian Steven Harrison on the Southern Downs last week. The case is also under investigation by the Ethical Standards Command of the Queensland Police Service, a police spokesperson told the Small Newspaper Company. Investigation is taking place on behalf of the State Coroner and

is subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission, and follows allegations of mishandling of what was the second siege in less than a week in Queensland.

Mr Harrison’s connections

with the Australian Federation Party, associated with the anti-lockdowns movement, appear to be linked with what unfolded last Monday night, March 13, with AFP’s local candidate Brett Tunbridge claiming to have been in communication with Mr Harrison during the siege, alleging police unnecessarily inflamed the situation. Mr Tunbridge has implied the death of Mr Harrison is part of a campaign against 'conspiracy theorists' stating on radio the police commissioner Katarina Carroll has said publicly "conspriacy the-

orists, we're coming for you, we'll hunt you down". A police spokesperson has flatly denied the comment was ever made.

What both sides agree on is there was a complaint about Mr Harrison having been seen with a gun, but beyond that the stories diverge: Mr Tunbridge claims Mr Harrison had a gel blaster toy, while a close friend of Mr Harrison believes the historian may have had replicas of old firearms - reflective of his love of the British empire. Dirty water complaints

Our newspapers were in tune with local complaints towards the end of last week of the quality of town water in Stanthorpe, noting a whitish discolouration by those offering commentary online.

A Southern Downs Regional Council spokesperson responded, stating that Council was “not directly aware of any

issues with the water quality in Stanthorpe”.

“Crews have been replacing interconnections in the Stanthorpe water network as part of its commitment to upgrade ageing infrastructure and this could have had some initial flow reversal effect which can result in dirty water being experienced,” the spokesperson said.

“Council encourages the community to contact Customer Service to report any issues or concerns regarding water quality. Concerns can also be reported

through the free My SDRC App which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.”

Council receives regular reports on the water quality through the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA), who’s “accredited laboratories” ensure that the “supplied water meets the current Australian drinking water guidelines.”

Readers are welcome to contact The Town and Country Journal if they wish to share their thoughts on this matter.

of firearms.

What also appears to be clear is that police surrounded Mr Harrison’s apartment, using spotlights, loudspeakers and sonic devices to attempt to dislodge Mr Harrison from his home.

“He was an educated academic, a political adviser, and constitutional historian,” Mr Tunbridge told TNT Radio’s controversial talk host Chris Smith. “He was a small harmless guy, very studious, walked with a cane, hardly a Rambo killing machine.”

No more reviving in Gladfield

Southern Downs volunteer John Griffith vigilantly called our newspapers on March 20 when he’d heard the Gladfield Driver Reviver operation “would have to clear out”.

He was given the news via Gladfield’s co-ordinator John Newley who had been informed by Paul Anoleck, General Manager of TMR (the Department of Transport and Main Roads), in Toowoomba.

“I just got off the phone and told them there is no way we can be out this weekend,” Mr Griffith told us, admitting to feelings of “great disappointment”.

At the turn of the new year we had brought readers the story of how many passersby use the service and how all

hoped it would continue.

The issue is that as the outreach isn’t on Council land, it can not. Gladfield Driver Reviver operates on land occupied by TMR.

Mr Griffith had, before a phone call to us, contacted Member for the Southern Downs, James Lister who had been a vocal supporter.

At the time of going to print, Mr Lister wasn’t available for comment.

In the past the local MP had said that “Gladfield has the best Driver Reviver in the state”.

“The proud volunteers who staff it just want the Palaszczuk Government to get out of their way and let them do what they do best – providing a friendly cuppa to weary travellers and in the process, saving lives,” Mr Lister said in January this year.

As promised then, we will continue to track developments.

Styrofoam ban rumours resurface

Rumours are beginning to resurface that the federal government are looking to enact a ban on Styrofoam nationally.

Waste Management Officer with the Southern Downs Regional Council, Eva Norton mentioned during a Council Information Session in Stanthorpe last week that the Australian Government were investigating an extension to their single-use plastic ban to include Styrofoam. Styrofoam and other forms of

closed-cell expanded polystyrene items faced the chopping block in mid-2022 under the national plan to combat mounting plastic waste by the former Morrison LNP government.

The federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s National Plastics Plan says that expanded polystyrene used for fresh produce packaging, packaging for organ transport or pharmaceuticals, and home-delivered meal services were not in the scope of the ban.

Despite this assurance from the

Department, fresh produce farmers are concerned that polystyrene will be completely banned given calls by conservation groups saying the plan does not go far enough.

Southern Downs Councillor, Cameron Gow who is a fresh produce farmer in the Granite Belt, raised his concerns that a blanket ban will impact farmers in the region hard.

“From an agricultural point of view, we package up our brussels sprouts in styrofoam boxes, if the government gets rid of that, what are we going to use?” Cr Gow said.

Councillor Gow argued that polystyrene is actually recyclable given the boxes his business use feature the recycling stamp on the bottom, however, it was noted that the Southern Downs does not have the facilities to recycle it.

The Southern Downs waste management team told the Councillors that there are facilities in Toowoomba to recycle polystyrene, but given the possible federal ban, it may not be a wise decision for the Council to invest in those facilities.

Councillors Sheryl Windle and Jo McNally stated that home food delivery businesses such as ‘Lite n’

Easy’, ‘HelloFresh’, ‘Youfoodz’ etc. are supposed to pick up the polystyrene boxes the kits are delivered in, but they don’t always follow through with this obligation.

It presents the customer with the dilemma of whether to incorrectly dispose of the expanded foam items in the general waste, or make the journey to Toowoomba to recycle them.

Waste Management Officer Eva Norton stressed the importance of not putting polystyrene in the recycling bin within the Southern Downs Regional Council area.

Warwick Courts, March 20

What’s best for the kids

A father-of-two has been charged $500 for breaching domestic violence orders.

Previously in court, he had disputed the charges, but has since accepted the evidence and pleaded guilty on the day. He reportedly was struggling with the separation from his ex-partner, the aggrieved.

The man was reported to have called the victim a number of abusive names while their children were present, and had clung to her car while she attempted to drive away.

Later that same day, he had sent her eight emails, which were stated to have no relation to the children whatsoever.

“If you want what’s best for your children, belittling and abusing their mother in front of them is not the way.” Magistrate Victoria Sturgess told the man, “You are exposing them to domestic violence.”

The defendant had previously breached the domestic violence order in Dalby, when the order had first been implemented.

Facing the consequences

A 30-year-old woman was seated in the box at the Warwick court on Monday, to be charged for stealing an approximate $1500 worth of stolen items while on parole, as well as possessing several utensils used for taking drugs.

CCTV showed two people entered the premises of a store, and stealing two expensive security cameras off the shelves

on March 17.

“This is somebody running a business,” Magistrate Victoria Sturgess said to the defendant. “These people are just trying to make a living, they don’t deserve to have their items stolen.”

The woman reportedly has a 10-yearlong criminal history, dating back to 2012, which included convictions of stealing, entering premise illegally, and dishonesty.

Her lawyer Mr Chapman, made a case for her financial situation, stating that she lives on a disability pension and pays for several expensive medications to assist in her mental health.

Magistrate Sturgess acknowledged the defendant’s financial situation, but due to the long history of offending, stated that she didn’t “See any reason why (she) should not face the consequences of (her) actions.”

The defendant attempted to speak throughout the hearing but was ignored or shut down several times.

“Stop talking, I’m talking,” Magistrate Sturgess told the defendant.

The woman was charged to a six-month sentence concurrent with her current sentence, with the chance to apply for parole “As soon as today,” stating that it was up to the police to decide whether she was fit to be at large.

Mixed Messages

A Warwick woman has been fined for stealing $200, and for obstructing police.

The defendant had committed an “opportunistic theft” according to Magistrate Victoria Sturgess, as she had

stolen money from the wallet of a person while they were on a poker machine. CCTV camera’s picked up the offence.

The defendant stated after being caught, that she knew she was guilty and shouldn’t have picked up the money.

The woman was further charged for obstructing police, when she had called them to the house to deal with a matter regarding her son. She had reportedly let

them into the house, but when they grabbed her son to arrest him, she took her son’s arm to attempt to stop them from arresting him.

“I’ve not yet seen a case where the police say, ‘This is too hard, let’s just let it go.’” Magistrate Sturgess told the defendant. The defendant was fined $500 to cover both offences, and ordered to pay a further $200 to the victim of the theft.

EVERYONE’S ENTITLED with Andrew Gale

Just a few short weeks before the end of last century, (November 1999 to be specific), we became the proud parents of a gorgeous little girl. A sister for her two older brothers.

I recall it was a straight-forward birth with no complications. (Yeah, it’s probably easy for me to say that, I know). But she did come into the world quicker and easier than her boof-headed brothers and then, in later years, than her four younger brothers did.

Yes, you can add up. That makes six brothers all up for that little girl. Something that has been a blessing and also a bit of a curse for her too at times.

My little girl both delighted and scared the life out of me from day one. She just seemed far more delicate and fragile than the boys. She was much fussier when it came to food and to be perfectly honest, the thought of what lay ahead, into the future was terrifying.

Sure, I was worried about her having a good education, being well behaved and all that. I was worried about the state of any future world she might grow up in, both politically and environmentally, all that stuff. But what really worried me most were all

those boys out in the world.

Probably the scariest time were when her teenage years approached, but in the end, there really was nothing to be scared about. I suppose a lot of interaction between the sexes at that age comes from curiosity and to not put too fine a point on it, with 6 brothers, she really didn’t have a lot to be curious about.

It wasn’t until she was 20 and was most of her way through Uni that she got a boyfriend. It was right in the time of one of the first Covid lockdowns in Brisbane (where he lived) and he had “somehow” managed to get stuck in Toowoomba where she was studying and living.

My wife and I became aware of this and decided to do what any good parent would do and go check this young man out, all the while pretending we didn’t know he was staying at her student unit with her. So anyway, we went over and went inside. We could tell that our little princess was a bit apprehensive at our arrival when all of a sudden this young bloke walked out of her room. “Umm,” she said” this is my friend B…..” I immediately stuck out my hand and said, “put it there B….” He hesitated and said something about bumping elbows because of covid.

I just laughed and kept my hand out and said something like “You just walked out of my little girl’s bedroom young fella. We shake hands like men!!” And we did.

Don’t worry. It was all good-natured fun. They’re still together and he’s a great guy. I mean anyone who goes out with a girl that has six brothers and a crazy father must be a good bloke. As well as that, he has obviously has exceptional taste in girls to boot.

COLUMN CENTIMETRES

Agood friend of mine plaintively, almost hopefully, asked me the other day, “in your circles, or Elizabeth’s, do you know anyone who is seriously sick at the moment?” It’s one of the strangest questions I’ve ever been asked, but it’s a sign of the times. My mate was a firm Jehovah’s Witness as a kid, became a Communist as a teenager, and has progressed to the extent that now he is completely up-to-date with the latest conspiracy theories. He seems disappointed of late that his predictions of a whole generation being lost to ‘Bill Gates’’ needles have not come to pass. He’s genuinely worried that his wife (who had the vaccine) is going to die, and even the fact that she clearly is still alive doesn’t seem to trouble his theories. In fact none of his prophecies of the last few years (“Hillary Clinton will be arrested”, “Trump will sweep the 2020 poll” are just two I can recall) have come to pass, and it seems to make no difference to him. There’s always an explanation of why what he said would happen, didn’t happen…and the explanation is never “oh, I was wrong…” My mate is in a relatively small minority who thinks Putin is trying to rid the world of neo-Nazis, but exposure to him reminds me that fever of “something’s wrong” and “they” are out to get us, has spread to some of our smartest minds. Which brings me to the death of Steven Harrison. I never met Steven I think, but the people who have met him have remarked on his intelligence. I’ve listened to Steven speak about history in a YouTube clip, and count me impressed. But just as some people are arguing that “the police” are responsible what happened to Steven, I think we

should also recognise that this madness that has infected so many of us, is also responsible. This is the second event in recent times where people’s beliefs about the wicked government have led to their beliefs coming true. The Tara tragedy is the other. If it wasn’t so terribly sad, it would be funny.

For example, during 2020, when my mate was switching between COVID being a Chinese weapon and COVID not being anything to worry about, I tried to bring to my mate’s attention that actuaries, insurers, statisticians were all counting hundreds of thousands of Americans dead who should be alive—the ‘excess deaths’ numbers. He wasn’t interested in ‘excess deaths’ then, but he is now. Now he’s all over the ‘excess deaths’ figures, claiming they are COVID vaccine side-effects. I point to the excess deaths before the vaccines were released, and his eyes glaze over…he’s not interested. Of all the things that really worry me in the world today, this is the one that worries me most: our willingness to believe in things on the basis of a couple of well put together YouTube clips or TikToks.

Think back to that question my friend asked me. He has got to a stage where bad news is what he needs, to confirm his madness. His latest fear is transgender individuals…he claims that one in 20 children are being coerced or lured into having a sex change. Before that he claimed the world was coming to an end because of Muslim terrorism, but he’s lost interest in that now. So this is what is amongst us now—an incurable appetite for fantastic doom and gloom.

Fletcher Road upgrade

Roadworks are now underway to improve safety on the New England Highway at Fletcher, between Ballandean and Stanthorpe.

The New England Highway will be widened with dedicated right-turn lanes installed into Fletcher Road and Horans Gorge Road.

The upgrades are anticipated to be finished by June 2023, weather and conditions permitting.

The works are being carried out between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday with a reduced speed limit of 40km/h during these hours.

The $6.25 million intersection improvements are funded by the Australian and Queensland governments on an 80:20 basis under the Roads of Strategic Importance program.

Assistant Minister for Regional Roads, Bruce Saunders said the project

Coronial inquiry into local death

“is an example of how the Albanese and Palaszczuk Governments are working together to upgrade infrastructure in the Southern Downs and stimulate economic activity in the region”.

“The dedicated right-turn lanes at this intersection will improve traffic flow for vehicles travelling on the New England Highway as other motorists wait to turn right in the new lanes,” he said.

“Safety of motorists and road workers is our number one priority, and this upgrade will improve safety at the intersection for all road users. Motorists are reminded to remain aware as traffic conditions will change during construction.

“At times, traffic management will include road shoulder and lane closures and some minor diversions through the intersection.

“Motorists are encouraged to drive to the changed conditions, obey all signs and traffic control in place during construction.”

For more information on the project call (07) 4639 0777 or email DownsSWR. Office@tmr.qld.gov.au

As Mr Tunbridge tells it, Mr Harrison claimed the first he knew of the siege was after it had already begun. He’d heard a knock on the door, “thought it was a joke, and showered and went to bed. Next thing he noticed strobe lights and sirens.” Describing Mr Harrison as “fearful of police” and a man who regarded “his home [as] his sacrosanct castle” he ignored calls to leave his premises. “He contacted me via encrypted app. He stated that someone had put him in the corner. He didn’t understand what it was about,” Mr Tunbridge told the radio announcer. Mr Tunbridge claims to have been in contact with a police commander during the

siege, calling for a de-escalation of the situation, saying on air, claiming he was told sonic equipment was being used to “provoke a response”. He alleges that Mr Harrison’s father was outside the premises during the siege but was not allowed to speak to his son. The 38-year-old “was [inside] in a fetal position on the floor praying” Mr Tunbridge said. The last time he spoke to Mr Harrison, Mr Tunbridge claims the deceased said, “I am so tired, I can’t take this any more. I just want to go to sleep.”

Even though no shots were heard, Mr Tunbridge alleges he was informed by police the deceased died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A friend of Mr Harrison who lived close by told The Small Newspaper Company that he was with the deceased on Monday night until 7.30, and claims there was a dispute between Mr Harrison and a neighbour which may have triggered a complaint. “The idea that Mr Harrison was wandering the streets with a gun is nonsense, because he wasn’t wandering around - he was with me,” the man told us. The man has since given a statement to the police, but the incident has lead to an unusual public gathering by Federation Party supporters in Leslie Park on Sunday to pay respects to a man who acted as an adviser to the party during the federal election campaign.

Seven new faces on the Downs

The Southern Downs welcomed seven new citizens on March 16 in Stanthorpe. “In Australia everyone can be proud of who we are,” SDRC Mayor Vic Pennisi stated at the event, adding that, “Ours is the land of the fair go.”

He further added that this is the land of equal opportunity for all, and proudly welcomed the new citizens into Australia.

The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem, and mingling over sausage rolls, cake, and fresh tea. The new citizens all appeared joyful on the day, alongside their proud family and friends.

Australian Citizenship gives immigrants the right to vote, apply for work in the Australian Public Service or Defence Force, seek election

in Parliament, apply for an Australian passport, receive help when overseas from Australian officials, and register children overseas as Australian citizens by descent.

The process of becoming a citizen can be a long process, with several requirements immigrants are expected to meet, including residing in Australia for at least four years, and being a permanent resident. Permanent residency is obtained via a visa. Applications for citizenship can take up to 15 months to process.

“The Citizenship Application process is governed by the Department of Home Affairs. Council’s role is to facilitate the ceremony only.” A Council Spokesperson said. Our newest citizens hail from Italy, United Kingdom and The Philippines, visibly enthusiastic and overjoyed on the day to receive their citizenship.

Warwick Art Gallery Exhibition Finding connection and belonging in nature

Warwick Art Gallery proudly presents a unique new exhibition experience for Gallery visitors with Sunshine Coast based artist Anne Harris’s exhibition Belonging: the embodiment of landscape. Anne explores the natural world and uses the stillness created by acutely listening to look deeper into the

internal landscape for a universal understanding of identity, rites of passage, and the cycles of life. Using traditional craft practices Anne embodies the mnemonic wisdom of plants, re-imagining the women’s ceremonies and rituals of her European, pagan and witch ancestry.

the Southern Downs Youth Council aims to:

develop a better understanding of the role and function of local government, our community and local issues; raise issues, exchange ideas, discuss community issues, provide input in to Council planning, programs and services and influence local government decision making processes and have genuine and regular communication about issues that are important to them directly with the Mayor and Council Officers.

Through performance, installation, textiles and works on paper, Anne uses plants and detritus from the natural environment to make inks, dyes and installations. This work creates space to understand the interconnected and unspoken life force that is in all beings.

The process creates a direct conversation between identity, self and place. Anne is sixth generation Australian of English and European heritage and investigates this ancestry to inform and question her spiritual connection and sense of belonging.

“My work discusses notions of connection and belonging,” says Anne, “particularly in relation to women reclaiming sovereignty of self. My process-based practice creates space to understand the interconnected and unspoken life force that is in all beings.”

Belonging: the embodiment of landscape is on display at Warwick Art Gallery 2 March to 8 April 2023. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm. Closed on public holidays.

The work in this exhibition references remembered landscapes to explore identity, rites of passage and the cycles of life. Listening deeply to messages from the natural world, Anne uses traditional craft practices and performance to investigate the interconnected life force in all beings.

Warm welcome for the Clarkes and a worthy cause

Contributed

Sue and Lloyd Clarke, the parents and grandparents of Hannah Clarke and her three children who were murdered by Hannah’s estranged partner in 2020, spoke to a crowd of approximately 150 at Warwick RSL on Saturday 18th of March at the Protea Place Warwick Luncheon. They shared their journey to ensure laws are changed to amend the definition of domestic and family violence to better protect women experiencing coercive control. They are hopeful that the changes will be passed in state parliament by September 2023 in time for Hannah’s heavenly birthday.

T he Clarkes, through their Small Steps for Hannah Foundation, donated $25,000 to Protea Place Warwick as support for vulnerable women on the Southern Downs. Scope Allora donated

$5,000 after already donating an initial $3,000 in November 2022. And Warwick RSL donated a further $500, provided two multidraw prizes and offered ongoing venue support for fundraising for Protea Place. Protea Place Inc. was formed by a proactive group of Toowoomba women who were passionate about creating tangible change for women in need and in Warwick there is a team of change-makers who want the same for women on the Southern Downs. The intention is to make this a reality by mid 2023. Protea Place currently receives no government funding and is made possible by community financial donations, sponsorship, community grants and active fundraising. A volunteer team in Warwick consists of Sue Campbell, Ansie Liebenberg, Kathy Payne, Ian Darnell, Jill Bockman, Julie Gliori and Sue Harris. This women’s day refuge/ service which will be

based in Warwick to help the many women at risk in our community – the ones’ who can’t access services in Toowoomba due to transport issues or find the phone services don’t meet the requirements of regional women. It was identified that the Southern Downs needs a door so the Warwick

Uniting Church is undertaking to complete a makeover of a suitable building in Guy Street. This is being done through volunteers and with donations from the community. The journey has only just begun for Protea Place Warwick.

Veterans deadline approaching

On Thursday afternoon, March 23, Sarah Jowit from Defence & Veterans Legal Service came to speak with veterans and explain in detail about the service currently available to veterans.

The service offers a free legal service for veterans and Defence members has marked its first anniversary by boosting the assistance it provides to them. In the past year more than 1,000 people have been helped across Australia by the Defence and Veterans Legal Service (DAVLS).

This service provides free, confidential and independent legal support to people who want to share their story with the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.

Key dates

Submissions to the Royal Commission must be received by October 13 of this year. But if you want to have a private one-on-one session with a Royal Commissioner, you must submit your request by April 28 of this year.

DAVLS also helps with issues relating to veterans’ entitlements and other legal problems commonly experienced by current and former ADF members.

“In response to high levels of demand, we are increasing the

support we provide to current and former ADF members –and their families,” said Jasmine Stanton, a former Navy officer and Army Reservist who is now the Director of DAVLS.

“Our legal help is free and confidential – and it’s completely independent. We don’t work for the Royal Commission, or the Defence Department, or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

“We help people share their story with the Royal Commission in an informed and safe way that

Immerse Yourself In Peace & Tranquility

‘Big Hill’ - Pratten Qld

protects their rights and ensures their voice is heard.

“Real change can happen when people are empowered to speak up.”

DAVLS provides tailored legal advice about issues including:

■ Making a submission

■ The rights and obligations of people who make a submission

■ Privacy, confidentiality, and defamation

■ National security laws, and confidentiality provisions in ADF employment contracts

■ Legal protections for people who make a submission.

Please remember if you want to have a private one-on-one session with a Royal Commissioner, you must submit your request by April 28 of this year.

2023 ROUND 4 - OVERVIEW

Who knew that the first ever meeting between the Dolphins and Broncos would come with both sides looking to go 4-0 to start the year.

That’s the situation we’re faced with after the dream run of the Dolphins continued with another inspiring win, this time on the road to Newcastle, giving them victory in their first away match.

They had to do it tough with the Knights not making it easy for them and again spending time with a player in the sin bin, but to their credit they showed enough grit.

As for the Broncos, they came home with a wet sail against the Dragons, scoring four tries in the last 10 minutes to completely blow St George Illawarra out of the water in quick and dominant fashion.

Reece Walsh was again incredible at fullback, Ezra Mam added a spark in the halves, Payne Haas’ late offloading was brilliant and the glue that keeps it all together, Adam Reynolds, continued his great start to the season.

A full house is almost guaranteed on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium to continue the great crowds we’ve been seeing in 2023.

Speaking of big attendances, almost 40,000 were on show to witness the game’s oldest rivalry, the Roosters and Rabbitohs last Friday night.

It was the Roosters that came away with the points against a pretty disappointing South Sydney side who let a 10-point lead slip from their grasp.

They weren’t the only side that was disappointing at the weekend, with the Cowboys copping a hefty loss at home to the Warriors despite being very warm favourites.

Luckily for supporters of the Queensland teams, the Gold Coast looked much better than the week prior in taking down a depleted Melbourne side.

It wasn’t their start that was poor, with the visitors finishing too strong and leaving the home side with no answers in Townsville.

In tragic news to start the week, the rugby league world was left in mourning following the tragic passing of legend John Sattler.

Regarded as one of the toughest to ever lace up the boots, most will remember his act of courage in the 1970 grand final for South Sydney, breaking his jaw early in the game before going on to play out the rest and help his side get over the top of Manly. Ironically the two teams will clash this Saturday night.

Not Necessarily the News...

Following our reinstatement of this popular column, The Small Newspaper Company continues to present a fresh view, or more, of what we come across in our reporting travels.

What was going on with the phone on the newsdesk?

I'm all for news readers being up-to-date and ten points for Joe O'Brien of the ABC

who handles a device magnificently as he goes to air and juggles a number of screens on live television but I have to admit to a double take on the same broadcaster on Sunday night March 19 when the newsreader had what looked like, her (pink) mobile phone at arm's reach. I wondered if she was expecting an urgent text? Needed to call for help? Or, worse still, was it a prop? Didn't think it such an appropriate look... and guess what, about two minutes later, after the cut to the next story's visuals, the phone had gone? Maybe the producer thought otherwise too. (Selina V.)

Scams: Are you wary?

It's become a regular occurrence unfortunately to receive scam-like emails, texts and calls, and odder still if they involve sums of money.

I received two last week, via email and in reasonably quick succession, claiming transactions with the ATO (Australian Tax Office). They even look dodgy, don't you think (see these screenshots)? I wondered who would spell "honor" like that, or attempt something so half-baked?

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) put out an alert recently for "Telstra impersonation emails".

They asked: "Have you received an unexpected email from Telstra asking you to complete a form to avoid disruption or cancellation of your service?" advising to, "Be wary ... If you’ve received this email do not download or open the attachment or any links in the message."

If you believe you are

victim of a cybercrime, go to ReportCyber at cyber. gov.au Learn more about how to protect yourself from phone scams on the ACMA website and make a report to Scamwatch.

While this is the reality of the current day, it also isn't Necessarily the News if we treat it with the disregard we should. with heightened awareness for what could happen if we "click" for more details.

Harmony, numeracy and good vibes: OK with that?

There seems to be a day for just about everythingInternational Happiness Day was marked on Monday 20 March within a week dedicated to “harmony” and International Mathematics Day, apparently was on March 14. Did you happen to do more or less numeracy last week? NAPLAN had some ticking those boxes.

A day that is very much worth

marking on the calendar is the annual “RU OK?” Day, this year set for September 14.

In a climate where we hear more about the stresses of daily living - the cost of rentals, if you happen to have one, rising mortgages and the general lament of all expenses on the up and up, this “national day of action” where we are reminded to check in with each other, is valuable.

The question is though, “Are we really at a place as a nation where we need to be reminded to check in with those around us?” And again?

It seems that promoters

believe we are as they spruik the importance of starting “a meaningful conversation” with someone who “might be struggling with life”.

It’s good advice, even if we are being told again to check in

with each other although I like to suggest that the conversation is not only “started” but also followed up, often.

“Those who are exposed to the R U OK?Day campaign are up to six times more likely to reach out to someone who might be experiencing personal difficulties compared to those not exposed to the campaign,” promoters flag, to give us the move-along.

Free resources are available for anyone wanting to prepare early or indeed, ask the question any day of the year.

There are “tailored resources for more vulnerable communi-

ties such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and LGBTIQ+ communities”. Specifically, the resources are said to be from:

Community ambassadors from around Australia who share their lived experience

Experts and health professionals

Celebrity ambassadors R U OK? spokespeople relevevant to targeted workplace, education and community settings

Feeling more harmonious this week?

Two days ago was Harmony Day, within an ideally more harmonious week and the message from the Palaszczuk Government was that they are “committed to acting against racism”.

Described as a “uniquely Australian celebration which promotes harmony and unity among all cultures”, the March 21 celebration was marked around the state with the government said to have provided

financial support of the events.

“Harmony Day is a time for everyone to celebrate the enormous benefits of multiculturalism,” the Minister for Multicultural Affairs Leanne Linard said.

“The message behind Harmony Week is ‘everyone belongs’ and Queensland is a place where everyone should feel a sense of belonging.

“Harmony Week is reminder for us to continue finding common ground and to recognise the shared values we can all connect over and celebrate.”

The Minister also took the opportunity to flag the upcom-

ing Multicultural Queensland Awards.

“(This week is) also an opportunity to recognise outstanding Queenslanders who contribute to an inclusive society and one way you can do that is by nominating them (for the awards),” she said.

“With less than two weeks left until nominations close on 5 April, I’d like to encourage you to consider the Queenslanders who help others find belonging, or those exceptional multicultural sector efforts that are innovative and intercultural.

“As Queenslanders, I’m sure we can all agree – we are at our

best when we are inclusive, when we respect each other, and when we celebrate our unity.”

Following is where readers can find out more: https://www.cyjma.qld.gov. au/multicultural-affairs/events/ event-calendar and https://www.qld.gov.au/ about/events-awards-honours/ awards/queensland-multicultural-awards

In Rose City Shoppingworld in Warwick this week, shoppers said this about the initiative:

“I didn’t know it was Harmony Day or a week for harmony, but it’s good,” Betty said.

“I’ve heard of the awards, yes, I think I could nominate someone,” Michelle said.

“Don’t know anything about it,” Bob said.

“The thing about anything in the lead up to Easter is that it somehow gets lost in all the busyness that people have. I hope people can have the chance to think about this Harmony Day idea. Everyone just seems so rushed and there is always a day for this and that. Sometimes I think we’ve all gone a bit mad trying to highlight so many causes with all these different days on the calendar,” Charlene said.

Rocky Horror in Stanthorpe: Time to dress up

Contributed

On Friday March 24, the Stanthorpe Film Society will show the iconic movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show at The Arcadia Theatre at 6.30pm. This musical/comedy/horror film, made in 1975 and based on the stage show of the same name, is widely described as a tribute to science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the early ‘60s.

Along with Tim Currie and Susan Sarandon the film features recently deceased singer/ songwriter Meatloaf, and launched a legion of dedicated fans around the world.

The initial reception for the film in 1975 was extremely negative, but it soon became a hit as a midnight movie when audiences began participating with the film through song and dance and dressing up in character.

Guests attending the Stanthorpe showing at The Arcadia will also be encouraged to dress in their favourite

character. Who will you dress as? Frank-N-Furter; Janet or Brad; or Riff Raff; or Magenta? Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed and maybe the best dancer.

Memorable songs such as Time Warp and Sweet Transvestite have become well known and the film continue to have an international cult following.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show remains the longest-running theatrical release in film history. In many cities, live amateur shadow-casts act out the film as it is being shown.

Remarkably, this was the first film which celebrated diversity and gave a voice to drag and transvestite performers. If you have not seen this much-loved film before, now is the time.

Supper is included in the ticket price and drinks are available for purchase. Tickets are still available at Trybooking: https:// www.trybooking.com/ events/landing/1006733

New role for Allora local

Sharon Hannah of QCWA Allora Branch (pictured) is the new QCWA Border Division President following the retirement of Irene Peachey of Stanthorpe.

"I look forward to being part of the next century of QCWA and the new challenges of changing times," Mrs Hannah said of the appointment.

She "grew up in the west" and attended school in Charters Towers, after living in Brisbane, Gladstone, Launceston, and Newcastle, moving to the local area "as her family had a long history around Sandy Creek".

The new President's QCWA interests go back to when her paternal grandmother was a member of

the QCWA Boulia Branch. She recalls conversations with her grandmother on the occasion when she received a visit from the founder of QCWA, Ruth Fairfax when she was moving their sheep to the Northern Territory in the 1920’s drought.

Upon retirement, Mrs Hannah joined the QCWA Allora Branch where she became the Branch President and "enjoyed the involvement with the Allora community". She "enjoys all types of handcraft" and became the Division Handcraft Committee Chairman and has earned her Handcraft Teacher Badge.

As Division President she will attend Branch functions and meetings, Chair monthly QCWA Border Division meetings, attend QCWA State Council meetings in

Brisbane and Toowoomba, Region meetings and the annual QCWA State Conferences.

The QCWA 2023 State Conference will be held again in Toowoomba this year as they continue to mark its centenary.

"Of interest, is that Sharon’s Branch, Allora, was the second Branch formed 100 years ago just after the Toowoomba Branch," QCWA's Penny Campbell-Wilson said.

The QCWA Border Division’s Headquarters are situated in Fitzroy Street, Warwick with 16 Branches at Allora, Clifton, Victoria Hill, Leyburn, Cunningham, Condamine Valley/ Warwick, Hermitage/ Yangan, Emu Vale, Killarney, Mt Colliery, Dalveen, Broadwater, Granite Belt Weekenders, Glen Aplin, Wallangarra and Texas.

Wednesday March 15 saw 19 of our players head out to Clifton to their Annual Open Day. It was so great to see our Club so well represented in the first of the Open Days of the year. Congratulations to Judy Lester on winning the Division 1 Stableford with 38 points, and to Narelle who won the Veterans Event. Marg Adcock, Anna Cox, Janet Davis and Liz Cockram were other prize winners on the day. Many of our other ladies brought home raffle prizes.

At home a contingent of ladies played in a 9 hole competition. Tub Ingall took line honours with 15 points, Followed by Ann Tomkins with 14, Lyn Lane 12 C/B, Lois Wilson 12, Jan Aspinall 11, Annice Payne 9 and Gill Young 8.

Well done ladies, I know you had to juggle your timeslots, with the men’s shootout taking care of the course for many hours.

Saturday March 18 saw a good field of mixed teams battle it out for the top 8 positions to advance to the Matchplay component of the Annual Lane Cup. Jay Roberts and Mother Trish, combined well to take the prize of the day with an awesome 58 nett.

Thank you to Brown Nolan and Watt Accountants for their great sponsorship of the day, it is so very much appreciated. Jay and Trish made it to the finals last year, so no doubt will be a force to be reckoned with this year as well.

Liz and Eamon Cockram teamed well to be runner up with 61 nett,

on a countback from Molly & Shane Scotney also with 61 nett. Charlie and Kath Morrison were next with 62, Michelle Wright and Rod Hansen 64, Michael Banks and Helen Olsen 64, Tony & Majella Kahler 64, Di Johnston and Wayne Wells 65, Slim Eldridge and Danielle Seibel 65, Margaret and Gary Adcock 66, Geoff Lee and Carole Brandon 67, Roslyn Darton and Josh Manwaring 67, Ted King and Joely Singleton 68, Yvonne Pinington and Don Stewart 69, Mark Paroz & Lyn McKillop 69, Peter Gribbon and Mary Young 69, Ian & Janine

Stanthorpe golfers completed their third round for the Pike Trophy last Saturday 18 March. A good field turned out, some with expectation of a great round to help their score.

Nat Marano already had two rounds which gave him a convincing lead into the final round. His third round score was not needed and he was a comfortable winner of the men's Pike Trophy and getting his name engraved onto the plaque for 2023. The ladies event was much closer than the men's with

the eventual winner coming from behind to claim the event. Christine Hood knew she needed a good round to claim the trophy and she managed this to take the ladies' trophy by a narrow margin.

The stroke event on the day was also played for the Nuffield Cup, another of the club’s trophies played for each year. Junior golfer, Hamish Adam, continued to show his potential returning a nett 69 for the day to claim the Cup and first place prize. Runner up went to Darryl Boekholt with nett 70. The ladies event resulted another win for Christine Hood after she returned nett 76, two shots ahead of runner up, Fiona Kelly, on nett 78.

Men’s pin shots were claimed by Richard Reardon at 3, Nathan Stibbard at 12 and Doug Henderson at 17.

Filomena Silver held the ladies’ pin at 3, Helen Jones at 12 and Christine Hood at 17. Propins went to Rob Thompson (visiting from Ipswich G C) with an eagle at the

1/10 hole, Scott Constable at 5/14 and Matt Burgess at 9/18. The birdies nest at hole no. 3 was claimed by Darryla Boekholt, In the run down, a ball to scores of nett 71 going to Rob Thompson, Scott Constable, Matt Burgess, David Burgess and Alan Kerr.

Next Saturday, being the last Saturday of the month of March, a 4BBB stableford is on offer, the day to be sponsored by club members, John Green and Brendan McMillan. The day will be a shot gun start at 12noon with registration to be completed by 11.30am giving the starter plenty of time to organise starting tee allocation.

Stewart 71, Vicki & Terry Bennett 73.

How wonderful is it to see so many couples out on the course together. It was a great day, but so were the scores. The top 8 qualifying couples will now go through to the next round and battle it out with the Matchplay format, playing off the Match Index. Lowest marker to go to scratch, and the difference in handicaps to work out the remaining shots given to the other 3 players. EG lowest markers handicap is 13, and the highest is 33, then the player on 33 plays off the handicap of 20 for the day, and of course the match index is used. Men off the blue markers and Women off the Red. The draw will be on the board, and please check the dates that each round is to be completed by.

On Saturday 25 March the Field will be playing in President's Day. So please come along and support our hard working Presidents Scott McLennan, and Margaret Adcock.

Wednesday 29 March will be the Monthly Warwick Sandstone 9/18 hole Single Stableford. Thankyou to Wayne and Wendy

for your continued sponsorship, another one of our popular days.

Just to take note ladies, the Gertrude McLeod qualifying commences on the 1st of March, and the Qld Brooch is the 11th and the 22 nd of March.

Well there rounds up our golfing week, congratulations to all the winners, and well done to all who participated in our competitions. For without a field of competitors, the winners just wouldn’t be.

Beautiful conditions recently following the recent rain. A single stableford event was played today, March 15 and the

winner was Lorraine Evans. Lorraine played beautifully and also demonstrated her skills on the 12th and the 17th holes where she claimed the pin shots. Filomena Silver is on her way to lowering her handicap and was very encouraging for her to win runner up on a count back from Lynette Ludlow. Lynette won the pin shot on the 5/14th.

Battle for the Barrett Shield

One of the Southern Downs mighty rugby league traditions gets underway this Saturday evening, March 25 with the annual Barrett Family Shield clash between the Warwick Cowboys and the Wattles Warriors.

The two teams will launch the 2023 and 104th Toowoomba Rugby League season in earnest at Warwick league headquarters Father Ranger Oval with the Shield A Grade contest underway at 6.30 pm.

The Cowboys have already taken to the turf this season with pre-season trials against Marist Brothers at Father Ranger Oval followed by a trip to Kyogle to take on local club the Turkeys.

For reigning TRL first grade premiers Wattles the Barrett Shield will be their initial on field venture this season.

The Warriors secured a tough fought 24 – 12 Shield win this time last season, the prestigious 30th Anniversary Shield, presented by Barrett family members Dom Barrett, Cowboys President Dayne Barrett and Glen Hamblin.

Wattles also snared the reserve grade honours 32 – 4 while Warwick opened the program with a 40 – 6 demolition of Wattles in the Under 19 match.

The Barrett Family Shield was inspired by a family who have made amazing contributions to rugby league, especially on the Southern Downs, the Barrett name synonymous with the

Warwick Cowboys Club, as is the Hamblin name with the Wattles Warriors.

Just over 31 years back, the concept of a trophy as a prize for the annual Warwick versus Wattles pre-season trial had been suggested resulting in Wattles President Mary Hamblin (nee Barrett) offering the Shield in the Barrett family’s name.

At the time it wasn’t likely realised that the decision would go on to write a lengthy chapter in local rugby league history.

Such a simple beginning for a tradition that is as sought after and popular as when the initial game kicked off back in 1993.

The Barrett brothers, Tom, Leo, Ron and John played with the famous Collegians Rugby League Club of Warwick prior to the formation of the Cowboys.

Tom, who sadly passed away in 1996, also played a season with Wattles in 1968.

Barrett family sisters Mary Hamblin and Joan Bourke have been great supporters of league, Mary making an immense contribution and becoming the first ever female TRL club President with Wattles.

The Barrett family’s influence within the game on the Southern Downs continues, with ongoing generations joining with fellow players in continuing the journey of an admired sporting institution.

Warwick Cowboys current President Dayne Barrett played in the history making initial Shield match.

The Warwick “Cowboys” won that classic clash 14- 12 in a cracker of a game. Wattles scored a

converted try in the dying minutes to have the score at 12 all as full time was signalled. The crowd got right behind their teams for the five minutes extra time, the Warwick side adding a penalty goal to win the match.

Dayne has no doubt Saturday evening’s game will be every bit the fierce competition that the pre-season tradition has become.

The Cowboys can boast seventeen Shield successes with Wattles laying claim to twelve, the match in 2000 resulting in a draw.

Wattles President Amanda O’Halloran rates the Barrett Shield as a much-anticipated highlight of their club annual program, “it brings out a very competitive spirit in both teams that has existed over three decades.”

The player of the match in top grade will receive the Terry Doyle

Memorial Medalion, which has been presented in honour of the former Wattles President since 2011.

Warwick utility player Ben Sullivan has shown his outstanding ability in winning three Doyle medallions (2018, 2020, 2021).

Sullivan rates Shield matches as ideal season preparations, “the match is a great start to the year with its own brand of fierce rivalry, players on either side leave nothing in the tank.”

It could be said the Barrett Shield trials showed their resilience in 2020, the Cowboys nailing a 20 – 14 Shield win days prior to the Toowoomba Rugby League season being cancelled due to COVID-19.

Wattles ongoing link with the Barrett Shield on Saturday is Under 19 coach Cameron

The Warwick Cowboys and

Warriors fierce competitiveness will be on show again in Saturday’s 31st Barrett Family Shield trials at Father Ranger Oval. (Image contributed)

Hamblin, son of trophy proposer Mary.

Cameron is yet another of many Barrett family members to have run on in either Wattles or Cowboys colours to battle out what is considered among the toughest contests annually in the TRL.

In pleasant conditions on Wednesday (15/3), four games of Social Bowls were played and in the first of four games, Helen Jones, Toby Robinson and Gazza Trevena had a convincing win over Margaret Harvey, Barry Murphy and Brian Brown defeating them by 22 shots to 11.

In the second game, Robyn Smith, Bruno Stefanon and Peter Smith had a narrow win

over Noela Trollip, Basil Trollip and David Draper by 18 shots to 14.. In one of two games of pairs, Tammy Robinson and Greg Hammond went down to Amanda Jeffrey and David Rose 14 shots to 27 and in the final game of the day, Caroline Draper and Polly Lay had a big win over Colin Denning and Jack Bell 28 shots to seven.

The 35-degree heat on Saturday (18/3) kept most of our Social Bowlers indoors with only one game of Bowls played. In a game of Pairs, Greg Hammond and Jack Bell had a narrow win over Colin Denning and Rocky Thompson winning

by 23 shots to 21. A small group of visitors also braved the heat and had a roll up on Saturday. Another good crowd of 28 Bowlers attended “Twilight Bowls” on Thursday (16/3) and the results are as follows: Peter Smith’s team had a good win over Brian Browns team 17 shots to 9. Rocky Thompson’s team defeated Gazza Trevena’s team 16 shots to 12. Jack Bell’s team went down to Len Girgenti’s team 15 shots to 19. Polly Lay’s team were too strong for Robyn Smith’s team defeating them by 22 shots to seven and in the final game in the continuing duel between the 6 golf-

ers, President Len Leigh’s team prevailed over Santo Cavallaro’s team 15 shots to 13.

With the cooler weather fast approaching, “Twilight Bowls” will go into recess until later this year. With only two more nights left before season’s end, a big night of fun and entertainment is planned for the final night on Thursday March 30 so please watch this space for more details.

Just a reminder that novice Bowlers as well as regular Bowlers are most welcome to attend and you can register your name/s on the day by calling the Stanthorpe Bowls Club on 4681 1276 between 5.30 and 6pm or

be at the Club by 6pm so you can be slotted into a team. Bowls can be provided and please wear flat sole shoes. Bar will be operating and music will hit the airwaves during the evening so don’t miss out and come along and join in the fun. Please call Len on 0477 500 402 or Jack on 0400 412 631 for further information.

This year's self selected Club Pairs' Championship will take place on Saturday April 1 and Sunday April 2. Entries close on Wednesday March 29 and the entry form is up on the club noticeboard.
