The accessibility of Southern Downs public pool facilities was brought into question

following discussion about the operation of the district’s pools by leases.

Allora’s Connecting With Council session last week saw passions run high with questions on the state of the pools in the Southern Downs.

2023 ROUND 1 - OVERVIEW

One local at the meeting, who has previously been the president of a district swimming club, asked the Councillors in attendance why there aren’t following the strategic plan and encouraging physical activity, community involvement and all-accessibility.

After what has felt like an eternity, we are finally back in action with the NRL getting underway this weekend.

And it couldn't come soon enough!

Round one kicks off on Thursday night (2nd March) with 17 teams in the competition thanks to the addition of the Dolphins, and it sets up a number of questions to be answered over the next seven months.

Kim Hanson-Ross kimberley.hansonross@icloud.com

They then proceeded to ask the Councillors when Allora’s pool is likely to see an upgrade to allow wheelchair access either through a ramp or via a lifter.

Southern Downs Mayor, Vic Pennisi responded by saying that if there is a request from the

community, consideration will follow in Council deliberations.

This response garnered anger from many in attendance who felt that all-inclusivity should be a given considering it is in Council’s strategic plan.

How will the Dolphins fare in their first season?

Staff Reports

Led by one of the greatest coaches of all time in Wayne Bennett, their pre-season form has been just fare to put it nicely. With a roster that is missing star power, will they be able to bring enough week in, week out, to compete with some of the competition's heavyweight teams, or are they certainties to claim the wooden spoon in year one?

If not Penrith, who? We've touched on the Panthers being very vulnerable this year, and if they are, who will be the club to knock them off the perch for the first time since 2020?

‘New’ old mower for fish stocking

Southern Downs Regional Councillor,

Andrew Gale has used his position of power to ‘move along’ a decision on the maintenance of Boat Ramp Road by the Warwick Fish Stocking Association.

Councillor Gale introduced a motion to yesterday’s Ordinary Council Meeting to provide the fish stocking association with access to a used/

replaced council mower in order to maintain the area around the Leslie Dam boat ramp into the future.

The Councillor said in a Facebook post that the area is used by hundreds of residents and visitors each and every weekend.

“Whilst I had confidence that this matter would eventually come to Council for a decision, O decided to take this step to ‘move it along’ a bit faster,” Cr Gale said.

“Especially considering the current hire arrangement the Fish Stocking Association had with Council was about to

expire,” Cr Gale said.

The motion to Council noted the lease be extended “at a rate and with conditions negotiated by the CEO, being cognisant of the community service role that the Warwick Fish Stocking Association performs in mowing Council land at Leslie Dam”.

“Hopefully this motion is supported by my colleagues … so that Bob and Bill and the rest of the Warwick Fish Stockers can keep up the good work,” Cr Gale said.

Allora Library - moving not a simple option

The future of Allora’s library and the Senior Citizens’ Centre is not clear-cut, despite public opinion to save the building.

The Allora community were told at the Connecting with Council meeting last week that relocating the existing library to the Senior Citizens’ Centre could cost upwards of $20,000.

Southern Downs Regional Council Director for Customer and Organisation Services, Leon Love said even though Council own the site Herbert Street site, it is held in a trustee with restrictions on its use.

“The use of the site is constrained by the purpose of the trustee, for future use of the site, Council has to be that it is meeting the purposes of that trustee,” Mr Love said.

“Council owns the site for a body that no longer operates essentially,” Mr Love said.

“The Allora and District Committee for the Aging was established in 1979 … over that time the organisation wasn’t incorporated into our Senior Citizens’ Club… and part of that constitution sets out the purpose of what it can be used for,” Mr Love said.

The Director noted that Council is bound by the Trusts Act 1973 as they entered into a charity trust, and has obligations to act, within the act.

In order to overcome this,

Council will need to engage in legal proceedings to change the purpose of the trustee, which will cost upwards of $20,000.

Southern Downs Mayor, Vic Pennisi told the Town and Country Journal that the Attorney General is in support of changing the purpose of the trustee, allowing for the library to be relocated to the Senior Citizens’ building.

“At the moment, we have to make sure that the title of the

land that it sits on conforms with what we’re trying to do,” Cr Pennisi said.

“If you go to the hospital, that land is zoned to build a hospital there so you couldn’t go and put up a retail shop… unless you change the tenure of the land,” Cr Pennisi said.

“The tenure of land for the Senior Citizens’ building is for the community and seniors… how do you put a library in there? That’s where the Attorney

General comes in,” Cr Pennisi said.

The Mayor stressed that the Attorney General is happy to proceed with the change of purpose of the trustee, but needed to measure community sentiment on the idea.

“A decision could happen before the budget process… there’s a process to follow and in the meantime, I’m booking an appointment with the Attorney General,” Cr Pennisi said.

Allora Senior Citizens’ Centre, proposed site of the relocated library

A message for you, Lochie

Here’s a scenario you may find familiar. In your local supermarket line, queuing to use the lone remaining check out operated by a human, your eyes fall on the trolley in front. The trolley’s owner (let’s call him Lochie) has pulled bags of fruit and vegetables onto the conveyor, all swathed in hygienic polyethylene, many on a foam tray. There’s even a bunch of bananas in a plastic bag. Seriously, he’s going to peel them anyway, right? Ditto for the onions, potatoes, oranges, kiwifruit and mangoes. The check out attendee asks Lochie if he needs bags - yes, of course he does - and the plastic-covered fruit and vege are stuffed into bigger, thicker plastic bags.

Lochie probably has a cupboard full of plastic bags at home, and he’s storing them until

the defunct Redcycle scheme restarts, which will be never because it officially went into liquidation. Or, maybe, he’s a tidy freak, so his plastic bags have been binned, destined to end up in landfill where they will take a few hundred years to break down into tiny pieces of plastic which become embedded in the ecosystem. Then, perhaps, they will migrate to the ocean, joining 8 million tonnes of discarded plastic. There they will congregate in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch where they will choke turtles and seabirds, before disintegrating into microplastics and being absorbed into plankton, accumulating up the food chain into the fish that we eat, finally completing a karmic cycle of death and rebirth.

It’s hard not to be gloomy when you consider The Second Law of Ecology, which says Everything Must Go Somewhere, and plastic is Everywhere. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that the demand for plastic has nearly doubled

since 2000, growing faster than any other bulk material. In the next 20 years its use is expected to double again. The IEA also states that, although efforts to recycle have been strengthened and campaigns waged to curb single-use plastics, these efforts will be far outweighed by developing economies increasing their plastic consumption and the subsequent disposal.

There’s more: 99 per cent of plastic comes from oil and gas. The very process of oil and gas extraction, plastic production, transport both in and out of the manufacturing plant and recycling of plastics creates billions of tonnes of greenhouse gases which exacerbate global warming. If our plastic is not recycled, and, let’s be clear, only 12 per cent is, then most finds its way to landfill, where it can take centuries to break down and, in the process, as it is exposed to heat and sunlight, releases methane and ethylene. Remember, methane is a potent greenhouse gas, about 80 times more potent than

carbon dioxide over the short term. Thus, a perfect feedback loop is created, where plastic production and decomposition create not only a severe environmental crisis but also aid and abet a global warming nightmare.

Plastic is ubiquitous - found everywhere from the Mariana trench at 11 km below sea level to the summits of our highest mountains. It finds its way into the stomachs of migratory birds and marine life, into the air we breathe and into the placentas of unborn human babies. But maybe, as we scramble to cope with this plastic deluge, we are looking at the problem from the wrong end by focusing on the end product. The slogan ReduceReuse-Recycle is said in that order for a reason: the priority is reduce, but we’re not doing that. In fact, often, we’re not even trying.

Back to Lochie; it’s not all his fault. He has probably watched his parents shop this way and assumes a bunch of bananas must be wrapped in plastic. It’s

habit that drives his behaviour. So, Lochie, if you are listening, here it is:

Please reuse your fruit and veg bags, or put them through loose, particularly if you are going to peel them. Consider a paper bag if buying small fruits like cherries. If the packaging doesn’t break down into something totally benign, then avoid it.

Please use a refillable water bottle. If you don’t like the taste of tap water then filter it. Say no to those disposable coffee cups. Bring your own, and if they refuse to refill it go somewhere where they will.

Keep your shopping bags in your car and remember to take them with you into the shop.

Don’t buy anything with microbeads - they are one step closer to becoming part of the ecosystem.

And, Lochie, know that no effort is wasted. By avoiding plastic in the first place you might have saved a life.

Best of luck.

EVERYONE’S ENTITLED with Andrew Gale

Iwas listening to the news on the radio last week when an interesting story caught my attention. You may have heard it too. It was all about a recent study commissioned by the AMP by an expert in demographics, Bernard Salt. All about shifts in the ages of common groups of us Aussies. You know, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and so on. A lot of it related to how different ages manage finances but the social aspects of it are what really caught my interest.

What is probably the most interesting finding of this study, if you choose to believe it, is that adolescence now ends (therefore adulthood begins) at the ripe old age of 28. Yes 28. A full 10 years after one legally becomes a fullyfledged, bona-fide, legal adult.

Reasons given for that included changing ages when people marry as well as increased years in study and preparing for careers. We also live a lot longer on average. The old 3 score and 10, 70 years life expectancy, is now an average 4 score and 5, an 85-year life expectancy in Australia.

The report makes comparisons to similar studies made in 1950, where adulthood began at the very young age of 13, and 1990 when it was 18. With life expectancies of 69 and 77 respectively.

I suppose many of us are nodding our heads right now if you’ve read this far. My late father certainly would be. I can hear him now telling me how he left school at 14 and worked 6 days a week, bought a block of land at 15 and built a house on it soon after. My dad would also regularly comment about modern young adults. Along the lines of, “They’d never defend Australia against the Japanese” like his dad did. “They’re too soft,” “overentitled” and so on. You get the drift.

Do I agree with dad? Yes, I suppose I do. But does this alleged greater length of adolescence bother me? No, not at all. Far from it, actually.

I’m glad that the world has changed and if this study is correct, these ages along with it. I’m glad my children can be adolescents longer. I’m happy that they don’t have to be grownups when they are young teenagers. I’m glad they don’t have to work six days a week like my dad did (unless they want to).

I’m glad my kids can lie around all day playing games on the internet using my wifi……. Hang on – back up a bit, no I’m not.

I’m super happy and proud to live in a country where the majority of our young people have the luxury of not being pressured by the same circumstances my dad’s generation had to deal with. If dad was still here, I’m sure he’d grumblingly see my point of view as well and know that he worked hard to make things easier for his descendants.

Oh, there’s some better news from that study I forgot to mention. It also says that “old age” now begins at 77. That’s a good thing as that about aligns with my current 12-year-old turning 28. When I can finally put my feet up.

They say the first casualty of war is the truth, but I think truth kind of died years ago. I’ve just started teaching a postgraduate research course, and one of the first surprising lessons I teach students is to stop using words like “proof” (except if they are studying mathematics) or anything that suggests their mind is made up, and they’ve reached their final research destination. At first they find that puzzling, saying the point of research is to find the truth. I reply that the point of everything we do in life is to pursue the truth…but to think we’ve found it is overreach. In fact I learnt a lot about research work and how to do it from my years in journalism. In an odd twist of fate, I finished my PhD around the time I started the Free Times, and never did a spot of research work that academics would recognise as research… instead discovering a very different approach to getting to the bottom of things in the world of country journalism. What I learnt in journalism is the importance of measuring the quality of sources, and then triangulating information between one source and an other—in other words, checking what he said against what she said. I was sued twice and threatened a few times about things I wrote in the paper, but oddly enough I was sued and threatened less because I got things wrong than because I got things right. Sometimes I got things horribly wrong, the person rang up, I apologised, and we printed a correction… and moved on. And in fact that was an important lesson. There is nothing wrong with being wrong. Finding out you are wrong is an important step on the path to the truth (not that you will ever reach the capital of Truth). It’s when you are certain you are right that you are almost certainly wrong. These thoughts come to my mind almost every morning as

I read the news, trying to work out ‘the truth’ about events that I will never personally interact with. How can I tell what’s really happening in Ukraine, whether the coronavirus escaped from a lab or from a wild meat market in Wuhan or…? I can’t answer those questions by going to Ukraine, or pottering around Wuhan like Sherlock Holmes. I can only judge by the quality of the sources, and triangulating the sources, same as I used to do on the Free Times beat. And on the Free Times beat I learnt the high price of being wrong, so I also learnt techniques to ensure I as much less often ‘wrong’ than ‘right’.

I teach my students that one way you can tell a good quality source from a bad quality source is by the uncertainty. Judge a newspaper by how much it has to lose; judge a newspaper by how often it prints retractions; judge a newspaper by its willingness to run two sides of a story, if a story legitimately has two sides.

Take the “failing” New York Times as Donald Trump liked to call it: it regularly reports on the losses and setbacks of the Ukrainians. And the Russians. It may not be ‘balanced’, but it hedges its bets, because it is worth $2.31 billion, which means, unlike a Youtube channel or a blog, it’s got a lot to lose. It’s very vulnerable to being sued, because if you sue the NYT and they lose, you get paid, but if you sue (let’s say) the Daily Journal and you win, well, we’re not made of money, so you’ll lose anyway… And finally the NYT has full time staff devoted to fact checking, and prints corrections every time it gets something demonstrably wrong. Journalists are not well paid as professionals…but the one thing that gets them up in the morning isn’t a breakfast fry-up but the worry that they could end the day with egg on their face.

“Double whammy” for SRAG and Borderline

Eclectically interesting was the Friday night vibe in the Stanthorpe Civic Centre when the local gallery (SRAG) and Borderline Regional Arts Association opened their latest offering among 34 artistic contributors from Tenterfield to Liston, “and everywhere in between”.

Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery Director Mary Findlay said supporters had gathered on March 3 “to celebrate this amazing exhibition” from those who contributed “generosity and tenacity for an exquisite and eclectic exhibition”.

Her words had followed the welcome by Towncrier Bob Townshend and the acoustic

spoils of Belinda Lister and Esther Plath. Ms Findlay’s “eclectic mix” tag was well placed among such a variety of works and mediums

- from paintings, to pottery and clothing by Dr Denise Rall, who also was present to promote her book, “Fashion, Women and Power: The Politics of Dress.”

Articulate and engaging, Dr Rall had the audience captured, first described by Borderline’s Liz Powell as a “fashionista, costumier, academic and author”.

“Tonight you have a double whammy,” the Borderline President said. “This exhibition is an example of depth and breadth of Borderline membership … from Glen Innes to Liston to Stanthorpe and many points in between. Tonight is

‘two for the price of one’ – a book launch as well as opening … it’s a very open-ended evening.”

Major sponsors, the Southern Downs Regional Council, were acknowledged, as were the “change over team” and all who had contributed.

See The Record tomorrow for Dr Rall’s insights on living on The Granite Belt and contributing to the exhibition.

Busking their hearts out

Staff Reports

editor@thedailyjournal.ink

Anyone who was at the Railway Shed, in Davadi Street, Stanthorpe on Saturday March 4, would have enjoyed the crowd who’d stayed around to hear “Vix” take out the South East Queensland Finals of the National Australian Busking Championships on the Granite Belt.

Not only did Stanthorpe hosts get a great wrap, so did the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival organisers, headed by President Russell Wantling, and the volunteers who assisted at various intervals.

First time judges, Nine Year Sister said they were “honoured” to join the judging panel.

“The festival has always been such a highlight of our year, so it was really surreal to have the opportunity to be such a big part of the festival and take on a

judging role,” the ladies agreed. “The other judges and festival organisers were wonderful and we felt like we were part of a really special team.

“The talent did not disappoint and it was such a treat to see so many buskers bringing the town of Stanthorpe to life with music.”

Of the winner, Nine Year Sister said: “Vix had an incredibly powerful voice and was such a confident performer. She seemed to be a real crowd favourite too.”

President of the Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce, Graham Parker also applauded organisers, participants and volunteers, saying in an email to members that the “talent on show was exceptional”. “Many businesses not in the central town area also had busy days,” Mr Parker wrote. “We are hearing that many businesses are returning to the previous seasonal tourism trends and events like the busking and rodeo are vital to bringing tourists that have discovered our region during COVID, back for another visit. My thanks to the many

“Vix” (in red) who is a Bluesinger, at the March 4 final of busking in Stanthorpe with other performers on the street including members of St Joseph’s School.

people that give of their time to make these things happen.”

Here’s that people on the street said:

“Kids from Joey’s were great. Very enthusiastic,” Margie said.

“The feel of the town was fun. It was a great vibe for a Saturday,” Dan said.

“People having a go at the busking is what it is all about. Good on them,” Trevor said.

Salute to a fallen samaritan

It was heartening to see and hear the widow of Alan Dare come forward to receive the Queensland Police Bravery Medal at a ceremony in Chinchilla last weekend. On the same day and equally heartening, Stanthorpe’s Matt Shield, who won the local busking competition in 2022, played live, his “Fallen Angels” song, in response to the killing of Constables Rachel McCrow and Mathew Arnold in Wieambilla last December.

“Shieldsy” told our newspapers that the track was his way of processing the events.

“Writing ‘Fallen Angels’ was very difficult and emotional, and only couple of nights after it happened,” he said. “I was home alone with all the news stories and my thoughts. I thought a good way to process it, as a musician, was to pick up the guitar and write it down.

“The words took much longer to write than my comedy words. I was deliberating for twenty minutes over one line, for example. It was the longest time but it really was only over two hours. And that raw version got thousands of views and shares.

“Police media have been given copy and have been using it. They used it on an Instagram post and they used it at a memorial concert... (and) they might

use it on remembrance days in the future.

“It’s more empowering and inspiring than tear-jerking.”

On the weekend, Matt was also behind the microphone as MC at the South East Queensland Finals of the National Australian Busking Championships (with more in this edition).

Of the award to Alan Dare’s wife, Commissioner of the

Queensland Police Service (QPS), Katarina O’Carroll said, “The medal acknowledges (Mr Dare’s) valiant actions ... when he moved toward danger in a desire to help others.”

“In posthumously awarding this medal, his legacy becomes intrinsically linked with our fallen officers ... (and) we stand shoulder to shoulder with Mr Dare’s family, especially Kerry, (stepson) Corey, (stepdaughter)

Renee and the grandchildren as they face this profound grief and bereavement.”

On this week of marking the role of women in society and International Women’s Day on March 8, readers might appreciate the acknowledgement of Commissioner O’Carroll as the first female commissioner of QPS.

Pool accessibility questioned

Continued from page 1...

“Your strategic plan is about being all-inclusive and improving health… it should be something that is on your list of jobs to do,” the attendee who wishes to not be named said.

To-ing and fro-ing then proceeded between Mayor Pennisi and the attendee.

“I give you the freedom the speak, and when I have the floor, I hope you respect the fact that I

need to speak as well instead of interrupting,” Cr Pennisi said.

Glenn Miller, a Southern Downs man living with a disability and who is in a wheelchair, said WIRAC is a fabulous pool and swimming was in fact sometimes the only exercise he got during the week but highlighted disability access to the main pool was still an issue.

“I go to the WIRAC pool every day, and as much as I can’t swim, I actually walk in the pool,”

Mr Miller said. “WIRAC is a fabulous pool, I really like going there, it’s just the access to the main pool,” Mr Miller said.

Director for Customer and Organisation Services at Southern Downs Regional Council, Leon Love said the Warwick Swim Club had received funding to install a new lifter for disability access into the main pool.

Southern Downs Council

CEO, Dave Burges told the Town and Country Journal, that he took the suggestion and discussion in the community meeting as a formal request for Council to look at the accessibility of the region’s pool, but was disappointed with the community expectation that certain items of infrastructure should be provided without having to be asked.

“I really struggle with that because should we just go and provide a squillion services to all

sorts of things? We have to prioritise, we have to juggle and some things don’t happen,” Mr Burges said.

“So where is the community drive? That then gives us the impetus to say, well, this is important to the community, but should we just go and do one hundred things hoping that that’s what they want? The community does have a role to play in driving those agendas,” Mr Burges said.

QCWA BURSARY WINNERS ANNOUNCED

“High calibre”: Penny Campbell-Wilson

Continued from page 1...

Miss Douglas’s sister, Ellie Douglas, said at the event, “One behalf of my little sister Indie, I would just like to say thank you so much, to you wonderful ladies and all the work you do.”

SOTE Principal Shane Power wished their winning former student “all the best in her endeavours” for her studies in fashion art and design at Melbourne RMIT.

“It is a very difficult course to get into so it is a huge credit to her do you have done so,” Mr Power said.

The Bursaries amounted to between $1500 to $2000 “due to the cost of living.”

Stanthorpe State High School has had another two former students successfully receive the Bursary this year as well, with Joshua Paech and Allegra Daveson taking out the honour.

Mr Paech was also unable to make it to the ceremony on Monday, but he had commented previously that he was “speechless”.

He is studying a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) at Gatton College.

Miss Daveson, who was present in Warwick on March 6, said the Bursary will assist in her studies of Mathematics and Commerce at the Queensland University.

She was “grateful to these lovely ladies for all the work they put in”

“It’s a nice booster to start college. It’s very nice to be here in person and meet the people who support the local community,” Miss Daveson said.

Bursary Organiser and President of the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA), Condamine Valley/ Warwick branch, Penny Campbell-Wilson commented on the winners, saying, “They’re

amazing. It’s great that we have people of this calibre in our area, and they’ll do well.”

“We are very proud of our successful tertiary students as their parents, family, school and the community are, and we wish Allegra, Joshua and Indigo every success in their future endeavours,” the local leader said.

QCWA raise funds for these bursaries through the sandwiches they sell at their café on 76 Grafton St.

The Country Journal was also informed on the day, that the QCWA has taken in new volunteers, and filled all their available positions, following our newspaper reports requesting assistance.

NRL review

It’s only been one weekend and perhaps we’ve seen the biggest upset of 2023 already. The Dolphins came in as massive underdogs in their rst ever NRL game against the Sydney Roosters at the weekend, but de ed the odds and put on a memorable display to cause the boilover of the century.

In front of a packed Suncorp Stadium they got the job done over one of the league’s favourites to win it all, with their defence hitting hard and everything sticking in attack. It was the dream start and has ensured a sold out crowd already for their round two clash in Redcli e this weekend.

It proved to be the highlight of a bumper weekend for Queensland teams, with all four sides winning. While the Dolphins provided the glitz and glamour, the Broncos did it the old fashioned way, holding the attacking juggernaut that is the Panthers at bay to grind out a tough one-point win.

That was the same margin the Cowboys were able to overcome a brave Canberra up in Townsville, before the Gold Coast rounded out the weekend in style by knocking o the Tigers in front of a massive crowd at Leichhardt Oval.

Now it’s time to see what this weekend will bring with a couple of ripping clashes, and a few headaches coming up for tipsters.

It all starts on Thursday with a rematch of last year’s preliminary nal between Penrith and South Sydney in what should be a very intense clash as the two develop quite the rivalry.

Then on Friday it’s the clash that will have the whole of Queensland tuned in as the Broncos host the Cowboys on the big stage of Suncorp in what should be a packed house.

They sit seventh and eighth on the standings after round one, and with the history these clubs have whenever they face o , who’s to say golden point is out of the question. Both halfbacks in Adam Reynolds and Chad Townsend slotted eld goals to win last week and there’s every chance their boots could be called on again to split the di erence.

Then on Saturday, we nd out if the Dolphins rst up success was a ash in the pan or if they are the real deal when the Raiders come up to visit. Somewhat surprisingly they will come into the match as outsiders, but a similar showing will see them hopefully advance to 2-0.

Dog park call

Southern Downs Regional Council are asking if locals “want to have a say on the location of Warwick’s new off-leash dog park?”

Locals can review their proposed plan and provide important feedback “so the project can be realised”.

Following multiple flood events in 2021/22 that had far reaching impacts on infrastructure across the region, Warwick’s only fenced Dog Off-Leash Area (DOLA) near the Condamine River was not spared, with the last flood causing irreparable damage.

Council has heard the community’s support and sentiment to open another park at a flood resilient location and officers are now undertaking the required process to investigate and propose viable alternative locations.

Council is now calling on the community and dog owners to share their thoughts on proposed elements for a new dog park through Council’s engagement ‘drop-in’ hubs where a team will be ready to discuss a consistent and sustainable approach to rebuilding Warwick’s DOLA:

Wednesday 15 March 2023, 7am-8.30am, Victoria Park, corner of Pratten and William Streets

Friday 17 March 2023, 7am-8.30am, Victoria Park, corner of Pratten and William Streets

Council’s Manager for Parks and Gardens Chris Collingwood said Council was committed to providing a safe, pet- friendly

space for Warwick’s dogs to run, exercise, train, play and socialise with other dogs and dog park visitors.

“We appreciate that Warwick dog lovers are desperate to have a local park formalised as a space for their furry friends to run free,” Mr Collingwood said.

“It was certainly a blow to the dog owning community when consecutive flood events last year destroyed Warwick’s offleash dog park and we have

since been working on identifying an alternative site.

“Community member will appreciate that Council must follow due process to finalise insurance claims, concept designs and scoping work for flood resilient locations, however the process is at the stage where Council wants to hear from the community.

“There are several factors to take into account when considering a new and viable location,

such as proximity to the town centre, distance from residential properties.

“Council encourages the community can get involved in this project by visiting the hubs to learn more about the proposed options, share ideas and provide feedback.

“Dog owners in particular are encouraged to come along and discuss the plans so we can deliver a park they can enjoy with their pooches.”

Council’s Parks & Gardens team is leading the development of a new dog park in Warwick and capitalising on the opportunity to develop a new generic design and development guideline that could act as a blue print for the region’s future needs. The new off-leash dog park is expected to be funded through insurance following the floods as well as external funding opportunities.

The Long Paddock with Gerard Walsh

On Sunday, my wife Margaret and I went to the Dolphins first game in the NRL.

We drove to Goodna and caught a train to Suncorp Stadium. There was then a 20-minute walk to the stadium.

I walked past the Dolphins staff giving out phins to support the team and interestingly some people went home with 10 phins.

After the win, I had a look for staff giving out phins but it was too late, me being the old horder.

If you get there early, you can see the players warming up before the game and the warmups are full on.

A front rower might only play 40 minutes of a game but you can add another 10 minutes for the warm up.

We had the Roosters warning up at our end, I noticed players like Victor Radley and Luke

Sam’s father Ben also played NRL and was originally from the Toowoomba area and went to school at St Mary’s in Toowoomba along with his brothers Shane and Chris who also played NRL.

It was a bit of a worry when the Roosters scored the first try but soon after the Dolphins scored.

They talk about the Dolphins not having a marquee player, what about hooker Jeremy Marshall-King and fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow who combined for the first try.

In comments after the game, coach Wayne Bennett compared the first Broncos game in the NRL in 1988 and the first Dolphins game on Sunday.

The Dolphins had 32,000 at the game on Sunday and the Broncos 17,000 in 1988.

That could be a lot to do with the greater promotion of the game now.

I read over the weekend that a decision was made not to include Redcliffe in the name of the Dolphins team.

The reasoning is that they want to spread their supporter’s wings wider than the Redcliffe area.

Spoke to a family on the train from the Ipswich line and they were supporting the new team Dolphins rather than the closer team, the Broncos.

There was another family at the game who came from Mango Hill, a suburb on the highway west of Redcliffe.

They had never been to a game before but now had an NRL team.

Warwick Sporter’s Golf writes...

The postponed AGM seen the Sporters Golf era come to an end as a result of decisions made by the Australian Tax Office and the Department of Fair Trading.

For 40 plus years the Sporters had collected in excess of $400,000 all of which had been

channeld back to the Parent Club to help cover the cost of new machinery and course improvements.

There has been far too many committee volunteers to name individually but these people know who they are and I would like to thank them for their many years of tireless work.

Back to the golf, last Wednesday (1/3) seen the Parent Club take over the running of the mid week game which will continue to be called the Sporters Competition.

There was 70 players for the nett game which was sponsored by the Pro Shop and coming out on top was Mark Paroz with a nett 65.

The runner spot was decided by a count back with Scott Mills on 66 taking that spot, thus relagating David Gengos to a ball in the run down.

Others to share in the run down spoils were, Cec Watts and Greg Carey on 67, Ron Simon and Paul “The Cattle Baron” Dautzenberg 68,

Dan Bowles, Troy Alsford, Eddie “Big Cods”Kemp, and James Bradshaw all on 69 and Garry Hanson 70 on a countback.

The Pro Pin 13th had Mick Banks putting $25 into his Autumn Punting Kitty, Keith Clarke $20, and Cec Watts $15.

Nearest the pins Dan Bowles 5th, Shaun Campbell 7th, Wayne Wells 9th, Danny Lyons 11th Neil Moore 16th.

Just a reminder that the Shoot Out calcutta is on Sunday March 12 after the Club Championship

presentations, so save up some money, come along and buy your favourite player and enjoy what is always a good night with auctioneers Garry Adcock and Stuart Wade injecting a lot of humour and drama into a fun night.

In closing I would like to thank Danny Lyons for his continued generous support of supplying the shirts this year and over many years in the past, thanks Danny it is greatly appreciated.

Seven sixes to Cleary

If there was any doubt Warwick Hotel Colts could score 137 runs to win the Warwick reserve-grade cricket grand final, John Cleary made it certain with a better than a run a ball 62.

He hit seven sixes and three fours in 62 off 39 balls at Queens Park. Cleary hit the winning runs with a four.

Batting first, Wheatvale made 136 in 38.3 overs with Tom Doherty again the best batsman with 39 off 74 balls, including three fours.

The best bowlers for Colts

were off-spinner and captain Alastair Costello who took 3-21 off six overs and Lachlan Collins with 3-24 off 3.3 overs.

Colts won the game with 5-140 in 29 overs.

Maugan Benn and Jack Ragh added 49 for the second wicket

for Colts before Cleary came to the wicket and added 45 with 17-year-old Jesse Bohm.

Tom Doherty took 2-27 off

eight overs for Wheatvale. Costello said keeping batsman Tom Doherty quiet in the Wheatvale innings was a major factor in the win.

“Tom made 39 but didn’t really get away from us. Another key factor in the win was Lachlan Collins bowling Wheatvale opener Chris Cantwell cheaply,” he said.

“Lachlan Gross took a good catch behind the stumps diving towards first slip off the bowling of left-arm paceman Jack Ragh.

“We hope to have a similar team with a few more young fellows coming through next season and want to quality for the A-grade finals.”

Stanthorpe Golf’s latest

Contributed

It was monthly medal time for Stanthorpe golfers, the first Saturday of March and the chance to qualfy for the Medal of Medallists later in he year. In addition, the day was also the first round for the club’s Pike Trophy. This event is played over three stroke rounds with the best two rounds to be in contention. Previous years competitions for this event have

shown that a good round initially is very productive. The club thanks the sponsor for the day, Tod Beckett, for supplying the prizes on the day.

For the medal round, Nat Marano had one of his best rounds since becoming a member, returning a score of 91 for a nett score of 66 to claim the win on the day. He had a very steady 18 holes, 45 strokes out and 46 back home for the day. Richard Reardon also had a very good round and his nett 68 would have been good enough to win on other days. He settled

for runner up. Best gross score honours went to Matt Waterworth with an excellent 74 for the round. Putting honours went to the day’s runner up, Richard Reardon who needed 24 putts for the round.

The ladies medal day was claimed again by Christine Hood, not only taking the nett event with 72 but also the gross with a score of 88. Runner up to Nikki Waterworth, two shots back on nett 74. Ladies putting honours claimed also by Nikki, 30 for the round.

Pin shots were shared around with Santo Cavallaro, Keith Jones, Alan Kerr, Christine Hood and Linda Kelly picking up vouchers for NTP’s. Pro-pins claimed by Matt aterworth at 1/10, Scott Constable at 5/14 and Darryl Boekholt at 9/18. Birdies nest at No. 1 was not claimed.

In the run down, score of nett 73 and better for the men and nett 83 and better for the ladies ere paid out.

Upcoming events at the club include Builders Day this Friday March 10, so the course will not

be available for social play. On Sunday 12 March, Sporters are holding the Maureen Bates Memorial Day, a 2 person ambrose event. The day is open to all players, handicaps will be determined where needed and intending players are asked to use the time sheet on display at the club.

Next Saturday March 11, another stroke event, the second round for the Pike Trophy. The day will be sponsored by Steve and Sandy Kay. Time sheet for the day is also on the board at the club.

Rohan Brady scored 56 and took four wickets as RSL scored a narrow victory against Wanderers in Stanthorpe cricket on Saturday March 4.

Batting first, RSL hit 122 off 34.2 overs.

Brady had best support from captain Duane Lihou with an innings of 32.

Barry Bulow was the best of the Wanderers bowlers with 4-24 off eight overs.

Wanderers played one man short which could have cost them as they finished on 9-118 after 34.3 overs.

Captain Brendon Barker was best with the bat hitting 51 off 64 balls with four fours and two sixes.

Brady was a matchwinner with both his wickets and economy with a return of 4-22 off eight overs for RSL.

In the other game, Jordan Lanza and Zechariah Kalo Shem were the stars as leaders Souths beat Valleys.

Batting first, Valleys made 7-94 in 31.2 overs with Adrian Spies top scoring with 21.

Shem took the bowling honours with 4-14 off eight overs.

Chasing 95, Souths made short work of the target winning without the loss of a wicket.

Lanza hit 65 off 41 balls, including eight fours, and Lachlan Pill made 28 in 32 balls with three fours.

The weekend of cricket was the second last of the fixture season.

End of season positions have already been determined with RSL to play Wanderers in the March 17 semi final and then the winner to play Souths in the March 24 grand final.

& Cowboys romp home in opener

Sam Ramuti came up from the under-19 grade to impress in A grade in the Warwick Cowboys 48-4 win against Lismore Marists at Father Ranger Oval on Saturday. Ramuti, who played U19s last season, was one of the best of the forwards alongside Dan Conn.

Half Mitch Wilson, hooker

Ben Sullivan and former Cairns winger Lachlan Ghee all impressed.

Coach Col Speed said it was good to see Joe Fuimaono back on the field at left centre in A grade.

Hooker Damien Beresford and Dylan Lippi in the halves were two of the best in a reserve grade 16-10 win against Marists.

Warwick made it three wins for the day in the first rugby league of the season with a 56-26 win in the under-19 grade.

Speed said Warwick had good

numbers across the board.

“There were some players at the footy thinking of returning to the field with the Cowboys,” he said.

Warwick will play Kyogle on Saturday in A grade and U19 at Kyogle.

Junior Rugby League star: Henry from Allora

Contributed

Allora’s Henry Macmillan is surging forward as a junior rugby league force to be reckoned with. Henry joined Warwick’s Collegians team to compete at the Adrian Vowles Cup in Charleville. After Man of the Match performances in the teams wins against Bedemere Saints and Valleys, Henry went on to be selected into the “AV Dream

Team” alongside teammate Innes Nowlan of Warwick.

Henry is 13 years-old and is a Wattles Warrior through and through, having played all of his junior Rugby League with the Warriors. He is a front row player and was named the Best and Fairest for his Wattles side last year playing in Under 13s. After an outstanding season, Henry was invited to train with the Canterbury Bulldogs Western Mustangs Development Squad.

Henry has rugby league running deep in his genes, as a third gener-

ation Rugby League star, with his maternal grandfather Graham “Butch” Smith a former TRL Player of the Year in 1984 and Toowoomba Souths Team of the Century recipient. Henry’s father, Allora local Glen Macmillan, was named in the Qld U16 Merit Team as a junior player. He went on to win a FOGS Cup A grade premiership playing with Wests in Brisbane and another playing with

Wattles in 2015.

Henry has another strength in Track and Field, particularly enjoying the throws disciplines. He competed at state level last season and placed fourth in the 13 years boy’s discus. Henry will be pushing to improve both this and his rugby league performances this season in search of achieving goals at higher levels.

Seeing red at Condamine Cup

The Warwick Redbacks have won their first A-grade premiership in Warwick Condamine Cup cricket after an eight-wicket win against Maryvale Colts at Slade Park on Saturday March 4.

Redbacks all rounder Samson Lowney put the win down to the excellent bowling and fielding of his side.

“Our bowling and fielding was the

best all season which restricted Maryvale to a chaseable total. Pat and Kieran Bourke were batting well and were looking dangerous when we got them out,” he said.

While games during the season are 40 overs a side, the number of overs for finals is 50 and Maryvale scored 7-162 after batting first.

After being 2-22, Michael and Pat Bourke added 39 before Michael was dismissed.

Kieran Bourke and his uncle Paul Bourke then combined to add 59.

Kieran top scored with 40 off 66 balls, including one four.

Restricting the top scorer to one four is evidence of the accuracy of the Redbacks bowling.

Paul Bourke was second top score with 28 off 54 balls.

Opening bowler Alex Dwan took 2-42 off 10 overs and captain Steve Grogan 2-22 off 10 overs for Redbacks.

Lowrey finished with 1-21 off 10 overs. Dave Drewery was also economical with 0-9 off three overs.

After his performances with bat and ball, Lowney won the Tom and Margaret Walsh Medal for player of the final.

Last Thursday we held our monthly mixed triples competition, in which the winners were Johnno Johnson, Geoff Davis and Darryl Busch. The runners-up were Danny Hughes, Matt Shepherd and Lyn Collie.

On Saturday we held our AGM, with a good roll-up of members. The main office-bearers are: Board Chairman Peter Collis, Secretary Gloria Brady, Treasurer Ed Diery, Greens Director Johnno Johnson, Providore Marlene Hall, Bowls

Committee Chair Margaret Wright and Games Director Steve Ford.

As we are holding our annual March carnival on Sunday March 13, there will be no social bowls this Saturday. Instead there will be a working bee, starting at 8.30am to get everything ready for the carnival. We would appreciate as much help as pos-

sible. Social bowls will resume on Saturday March 18, returning to our usual time of 1pm start.

Finally, entries for our open singles competition on March 25 close on Monday March 20.

To nominate or for further information, contact Margaret Wright on 4661 9331 or Steve Ford on 0403 991 301.
